  • This video shows you how to repair a blown relay for an Automatic Volvo 240, and probably other 7 and 9 Series Volvo's with the 3 Speed plus Overdrive Automatic transmission. If your car drops out of over drive and the switch on the gear selector doesn't do anything, check out the relay behind the glove box first. I have no idea if this is how all of these relays fail, but the fault I found on this one was at a very weak point in the circuit so I'm assuming so. I initially approached this as a band-aid fix until I could get a new relay shipped, but I think this fix might actually be more solid than how the units come from the factory.
I added a photo at the end showing the detail of the burnt circuit and a diagram on what I did to repair it in case you can't see it well enough in the video.

you saved my solenoid from bypass! I saw your video just before starting work on the solenoid. luckily I was missing a key and I couldn't take it apart. So I wanted to try to temporarily bypass the relay with a wire and electrical tape. I've tried. So I've immediately understand that my problem was the fault of the relay and not the solenoid. At this point I believe many have made changes to the solenoid for nothing.
    Thankyou!!!

Hi . Great video. Do you know the solenoid operating voltage? I want to know if i can put 12v direct to the solenoid . Perhaps uses less volts

Did you check the wires going to the solenoid? They could have shorted there and caused a large current draw, burning that trace off of the PCB.

You're 100% correct. Once I repaired the relay I started popping a fuse. Turns out the wire going from the solenoid on the gearbox to the shifter console had like 90% of it's insulation burned off, so whenever it would bump on the tranny it would short. The wire was so amazingly fried I had to take a picture.

yootoob78 Oh wow! Also some model years of these Volvos they used biodegradable wiring, I'm sure that didn't help much! I'm trying to diagnose this myself. Did relay and kickdown cable. The solenoid is next. :)

Maciej Rejewski should be the same on all years with the white relay behind the glovebox. this is a 1990 245 with lh2.4

Not entirely sure what youre after but maybe search ipdusa.com for "relay" and see all the pics and descriptions and that will help identify the part?

What does the tan relay go to?

There's at least 20 relays in a car. All kinds of Colors. You're going to need to be more specific.

yootoob78 i finally check this relay, and it's fine. Where can i find 2nd relay?

    • @yootoob78

Not sure about a second relay. Check the fuse, and the wire (pull up the shifter console, it goes from the OD button on the shifter to the solenoid on the tranny. If the wire is bad you'll know it by looking at it. If none of the above, the solenoid could be bad?
