I had similar issue befor on my cressida 1990 which uses a 5m engine. A43d gearbox. this is exactly the same gearbox installed at this volvo. I had similar issue where the gearbox won't shift to forth gear. I made a hole at the solinoid itself , then it worked. thanks a lot .

Successfully installed this on my 1987 Dodge Raider (also known as Mitsubishi Montero/Mitsubishi Shogun/Mitsubishi Pajero). The transmission in my car is the KM148/03-72, which is also known as the A44D transmission. The A44D trans is mechanically similar to the A43D transmission, which is non-electric. The A44D transmission is also the same as the A44DL trans, which is the lockup variant. The A44DL trans is equal to the Volvo AW72 trans. I attempted it only because of this video, so, big thanks to the uploader for allowing me to have my 4th gear back. I went from 50mph @ 3k RPM to 70mph @ 2.8k RPM.
Doing this Tomorrow! Hopefully it will fix it! Only difference is that I'm planning on cutting a notch connecting with a dremel tool on the current OD Solenoid instead of ordering the part. Fingers crossed that everything goes well! I'm so sick of high rev driving on the highway! Thanks for the great clear and concise video BTW! excellent camera work as usual!
In the middle of doing another 240 restoration, and the stupid solenoid is malfunctioning on this one. I bought an AW bypass plate, haven’t installed it yet, but quite by accident found your video here just now. Glad to see it’s about as easy an install as I expected!

I followed your instructions bought the solenoid delete part online, replaced the solenoid on the weekend, works great, like magic, I now have a 4th gear thank you so much , took a little while to get the bolts out, but well worth it . Next will be the shifter bushings ...
Because then it doesnt have to rely on the crappy old wires volvo has and relays that tend to fail. This bypass doesnt send signals to the relay to lock out of 4th gear so it basically never uses overdrive since most owners never tow with their volvo its almost a useless option. Still cool tho
Have just done this. Excellent video - thanks. A couple of comments - the underside of the car / transmission is obviously quite dirty so do clean it first then maybe compressed air across the area from the front. The mirror is a good idea. Notice the two o-rings! I missed the little one first time. The two 12mm bolt heads were quite stuck, so I made sure the ring end of the spanner was properly on the bolt...then linked the open end to another open ended spanner and hit the back of the second spanner with a rubber mallet. No bloodied knuckles!. Slot to the front or flat edge outwards. The top of my OD solenoid was disintergrating.
my Pajero has an identical overdrive solenoid, and will it fix my shifting issues? my car would only upshift 2 times @ 20 and 40. my speed is only at 60kph @ 2500rpm, depressing the accelerator pedal will only increase the rpm but the speed is still constant at 60-80kph depending on the terrain.
Hey mine is a 86 740 GLE but I don't see overdrive bottom on my shifter or close to How can I know if mine has the overdrive solenoid because is hunting from 2 to third gear and then hesitate to 4th Please someone help me out

I am writing this comment for people who may have the same model Volvo as I have. Last month, Feb. 2019, after viewing your video, I was inspired to try the OD bypass kit, on my 1990 Volvo 760 GLE with the V6 engine and the AISIN AW CO LTD Model# 03-71 transmission. However after installation and test drive, the car just did not drive right, poor throttle response, lack of power. This just did not seem to make sense, I only made one change; installing the OD bypass kit. In frustration I put the old OD solenoid back in and the car runs normal again. I might also mention that the "O" ring supplied in the kit is too thin which resulted in transmission fluid leakage. I found a thicker "O" ring at Home Depot "#17 made by Danco", which solved the leak. Maybe IPDusa never tested the kit for the model I have. However in fairness to them, they did give me a refund.
@@volvosweden To follow up on this problem, I have concluded that I had bad/ failing in-tank fuel pump. I first had a mechanic replace the main pump under the car, and the same symptoms showed up. Then I had the in-tank pump replaced, (on the 760GLE this is very difficult to do, not as easy as on the 240. One mechanic failed to do this correctly and I had to send it to another mechanic, who said he had to partially drop the gas tank). Anyway now the car runs good. When the weather warms up I will re-install the OD bypass kit.
My Mitsubishi pajero 1991 can only go up to 60kph @ 2500 rpm. and it does not sound right, i presume that my gear does not shift up to 4th gear, does replacing the od solenoid will fix it?
Michael Valeriano it turns out that the OD solenoid is indeed busted, i have it checked at a shop near me and the mechanic gave me 2 options, a new one or hack the solenoid by grinding out a channel between the two holes, i’ve chosen the latter cause it’s cheaper. Now it’s engaging no problem. This is probably the fix for the Gen 2 1991 - 1993 4D56 models

Hi i did the same mod on a 940 turbo n I'm at 3 grand on tach at 75 mph isn't that to high?
30 years ago I used to do that at the solenoid by itself. Fixed a ton of poor man toyotas and volvos with that trick.
