Switching to 32" 4K QD-OLED Monitor from the LG C2 42 OLED TV | Alienware AW3225QF

- The Alienware AW3225QF is my new favorite OLED monitor to use for both gaming and productivity. Finally replacing the long standing LG OLED TVs (C2 42, CX 48) as my main computer setup display.
BUT... LG, MSI, ASUS, HP, will also be launching models later this year, which may be better options depending on the features you want.

*Correction. It's 140 PPI. Ughh... YouTubing is hard... lol. I'll see you next year!*
*Update:* I Returned It. Taking my own advice to just wait and see what's to come.
Why next year?
@@suryavirkapur His videos are so good and inspired many to get the C2 yet he just uploads once a year.
Come on David
Just trying to recollect the old David Zhang for a moment.
Double ugh. It should be emphasized anyway. Happy accident.
Great video, have a great year
those scratches are absolutely INSANE, can't believe you were cool with that on a brand new product
Insane right
black colors look purple on the qd oled
@xxx333mmm_dreamstreamx3m yep, in every scenario but a dim or black room.
Had the G8 OLED and it was ridiculous how bad the black levels were in an average lit room. Went WLOED & haven't looked back.
@@OC.TINYYYYes. Pretty much in dim room qd oled beates woled with wider color gamut, better color accuracy and is more bright. In bright room on other hand qd oled black levels take a hit and basicly probably woled looks better.
I just got this and I have a fairly well-lit room (natural light from windows) and honestly the purple effect and black lift is barely or not even noticeable. It’s a major upgrade from my TN(?) though so maybe if you’re used to OLEDs you’d notice it more than I do.
See the Blacks not being that inky Black you come to expect from Oleds is a Deal Breaker for me. Thank you for this informative video.
yeah thats whats sucks about QD-OLED.
Bro this is only in a very lid room, using this in a controlled lighting it will even look more black than WOLED, what's Hardware unboxed for more information about this topic between WOLED and QD-OLEDs
@@Knox420 So what? Is there any QD-OLED without purple blacks out there???
If you buy LG you dont need to worry about purple. It always shows you blacks as black in any condition
@@tughantr06both have the same blacks, qd - oleds have raised black levels in a lit room like in this video
Zhang finally recovered his gmallll
it's good to see you back! as always, the video quality is amazing, super informative and your voice is just so calm
Awesome laid back and chilled review! I liked ALL the little details you mentioned, especially related to the text fringing.
All that I am happy about is that David is back with a video!
You are the reason I purchased C2 42" to use it as a monitor. Thanks for all your hardwork and knowledge that you share. :)
me too. And I still using C2 as my perfect gaming and productivity
i bought the 48" LG oled tv, after watching your first setup review and i'm more than happy with it, also i created a fancyzone that divides my screen in 96 parts, and now i can choose the resolution without needing a small monitor.
Just a comment, i still didn't get a burned led, but also i'm not using a wallpaper, i understood that by not using the whole screen every minute i'm also saving its lifetime, and i don't see myself changing to a small monitor ever again
Your videos are awesome!
Can u link video to do that? I got a 48 inch and idk how to do it
Glad to see a new video from you! I'm waiting on the gigabyte version of this monitor for the newer display port
That macro pad is amazing, love to see a video on that, thanks for the gist!
I think he already reviewed it. It's probably hand-built
I enjoyed your video, love your setup, advices and experiences.
Really happy to see a new upload from you :)
so good to see you back man
Honey wake up, the ultimate productivity desk setup guy has awoken too!
Another long awaited video!
My guy made his own custom rgb on the back end of the monitor arm. Nice!
Very interesting. I’m looking into replacing my venerable PG279Q with an OLED this year and have been most concerned about color fringing on text & burnin. Good to hear you like the text quality on this monitor! Makes sense though because I feel like the pixel density is pretty high on the 32” 4K (IPS) monitor I also have.
As usual, Thanks your videos are so helpful and pleasant
I have this monitor its beautiful. Im very pleased with it!
I've used the Alienware AW3423DW (the 34" ultrawide 1440p version), LG 45GR95QE, and recently swapped to the LG C3 42". Of all of them, the C3 is my favorite. The issues cited with the 4K 32" in this video are the reasons I sold my previous Alienware, and with the LG 45", it wasn't very bright, had poor pixel density at a 3440x1440, and awful matte coating. The LG 42" C3 however has been perfect in my use case and I feel negligible difference on 120 hz compared to 240 on an OLED. Try them all if possible at a store before deciding on one, I had to learn the hard way.
Do you use lg c2 for productivity tasks? Isnt it too much , i mean glossy, too large, cause you like staring at the lamp for several hours everyday.
@@NorthSea-xb7jk I do as I work on weekends sometimes and I haven't had any real problems with it. I work in a light controlled environment though so I can minimize the gloss. I did a lot more productivity on the Alienware QD-OLED as at that time I had a remote job, but the gloss was more semi-gloss then full on glossy.
I've been watching your videos since the first one where you gave your feedback on your TV screen. It was your tips for managing wide screens that made me buy my curved 34" ultra wide. And it's also these videos today that are going to make me switch to a TV screen (around 40/48").
And now that I'm planning to switch to a TV sceen, you're switching back to a small monitor?! Meeeh I'm lost 😂
I have switched from 32" inch to 42" and have never regreted!
Congrats on 400K Subs David!
I can't lie that the desk setup looks so much more empty now. Feels like something is missing. Anyway that's a dope monitor! I personally have the LG Ultragear 45 inch and haven't looked back, although sometimes I do wish it was 4K
You're right. It's a little too minimal now (even for me.). But that might change soon...
@@HelloDavid Maybe a 2nd monitor?
Seems like a 2 or 3 screen set up makes the most sense here versus a Goldilocks spin @@HelloDavid
I'm waiting for 45" 5k2k or at least 39" 5k2k from LG
@@hungz1241_axa 45" OLED 4k or 5k would be the ultimate monitor for me
I have this monitor and it's fantastic. I am somewhat considering MSI's version of this panel, though, since I'm not fully convinced I like the curve at this size.
Me too. Also the lower price of the cheapest version. $949 they say.
Hello there, while using HDMI connection, did you notice any flickering, did Gsync work correctly? You didn’t mention any issues with this topic but many others do. Please answer as I’m about ready to place an order
Looks like a good mid-size monitor! However the ASUS ROG Swift PG42UQ 41.5" has been on my wishlist for a while yet I'm waiting for the OLED monitors to come down more in price, I do like on the Asus how you can toggle aspect ratios from 24, 27 and 34" if at any point you find the monitor "too big" to avoid selling & buying another monitor
I'm still rocking my 43" LG 4K IPS monitor from 2017, the black levels aren't great & there's no HDR but there's really not much to complain about
Nice to see you back, you should do more impulse purchase videos!
My wallet can't handle these impulse purchases. haha. Thank!
I'm watching on my LG C2 and the shot at 4:38 had me reaching for my microfiber clothe! I thought my screen was dirty lol. The blacks are so dark it's like I'm working on a black mirror and my tabs are simply floating in the air a mere millimeter in front of that mirror.
What interesting is your video you made years ago put me into the mindset that smaller OLED high end TV's can also double as good monitors/gaming set ups.
The best review I have ever seen. Btw, can the macropad be used to adjust brightness?
No one's taking my LG CX 48" from me. It's advanced hardware based BFI is a lifesaver for a former CRT hold out. :)
I've only had it for a year. Got lucky on eBay. Thank you for the set up tips!
I do have mine farther back on a stand behind a corner desk and at 125% scaling. I don't think I could deal with a 42 or 48 inch as close as you had/have yours. Though your setup at the 2:00 mark does look really cool.
do you notice that fancy zone have one limitation , we can not set the resolution. I mean i have split the 4x4 then font are big like 720 on each area. every time i need to zoom out documents. its not easy
omg finally an upload by you again
keep up great work
To fix the 125% scaling / loss of desktop real estate vs the C2 42" issue - put the AW3225QF on a monitor arm and just bring it a few inches closer. You can always just move a smaller monitor a few inches closer to your eyes to adjust until you get that sweet spot field of view you like. The curve on the AW3225QF actually makes this an ideal monitor for using at a somewhat shorter viewing distance - whether that's using a monitor arm to bring it a few inches closer or just using it on a shallower desk.
For audio it might be worth getting something like a DX3 Pro+ and running USB audio from the console into that. Then you can connect your PC to the optical or bluetooth inputs for easy input switching for your speaker setup and / or wired headphones (if you have them).
The closer your eyes have to focus the more strain your eyes will get and the less time they'll work optimally for.
Crazy you are uploading again! Yaaaaaaayyyhhhh
What is that you are using to mount that lightbulb on the backside of the monitor?
For desktop productivity work, is the AW noticeably brighter on white screens than the C2 42? I have a similar office lightning environment and prefer brighter screen when reading documents.
For me the best productivity size was in the 38" 3840x1600 monitors from a few years ago. The extra 160px height compared to the mainstream resolutions helps a lot and it's a shame they seem to have been abandoned once more. You can also use 100% scaling. In my opinion 4K+ resolutions make no sense if you need to use scaling to see anything.
Yeah same, I've been trying out this monitor and going back to 16:9 as been really tough. I like the improved text clarity and image quality, but the productivity side of it really takes a hit. Something weird that's also been happening to me, and reported by other people on Reddit, is that this QD-OLED monitor causes eye strain, which again for work staring at this for 8 hours a day at minimum just sucks.
I'm probably going to return this monitor and wait for a Mini LED UW monitor that is hopefully the right compromise on both ends for me.
That's what I'm using right now and while I enjoy it, I really miss the 2160 vertical pixels from the 42" LG C2 for video editing. Really hoping the new 5120x2160 Dell U4025QW is around $1,500 within a few months of release so I can get that back. If the Samsung 57" G9 were IPS, it'd be on my desk right now.
@@CaseyHardman 40" 5k2k 240Hz RGB OLED is the holy grail.
There are 34" and 38" 5120x2160, 240Hz OLEDs on the way either by the very end of 2024, or early 2025. I think that will be my next upgrade from an LG 48C1 - though I expect they will all be curved while I would prefer flat like my LG.
38" ultrawide is awesome. Hopefully we get an OLED one soon
Okaaaay. I would consider that as a huge downgrade.
My thoughts exactly. The LG looks better and is bigger.
PPI of 4k 32" is about right. I settled on the G9 57" as frankly I'm mostly looking for a productivity display but I would probably have preferred something 21:10 rather than 32:9
What sort of feedback do you get from the C2 when typing hard o the keyboard? It doesn’t seem like it moves at all with that monitor arm..
Do you notice c2 white color is cool white vs aw32 is greyish white in small window?
No matter how I adjusted the aw32 I can’t the white color close to c2 white color.
Does c2 slightly brighter than aw32 in hdr mode?
To me, for multitasking purposes, 32" is a drawback compared to 42 or48". Dual 32" would be a better option.
Yea exactly, I have a 48” c1 and a 34” ultrawide g8 qd-oled, best of both worlds. 16:9 32” is too small
What monitor arm are you using for the alienware? I want to get the ergon hx but im not sure the if the alienware is too light for it.
Great videos from you!
How does that monitor bar light works on curved monitors?
How does it fair when outputting the darker shades, say like when u run windows dark mode, does it show dirty gray shades like woleds? does it show black horizontal lines through the dark shades like with crt monitors but only on the darker shades?
I'm waiting for the HP Omen Transcend 32 inch. It comes with DisplayPort 2.1 and a built in KVM, and the same 3 year burn in warranty that Alienware comes with. I'm going to pull the trigger on it assuming it has good reviews and it's not insanely expensive.
After my 48 c2 i can't imagine going any smaller than the 42 version. a QD oled with 42 inch and 240hz would be perfect
Same, but with 38". Which is the sweet spot for me.
Tried a 42-inch TV as a computer desktop display, but it was too large when sitting at an arms lenght from it. Maybe if you sit further away I guess it’s fine. :)
@@staraffinityNever use fullscreen. Use it like a digital workspace table.
@@staraffinityYou can put it further away and then benefit from less strain on your eyes. People with tiny screens generally have them closer and the closer you have to focus the more strain your eyes go through which wears them out quicker.
I bought the LG 32EP950 OLED monitor in 2021. Great monitor, no doubt, but now in 2024 I have clearly visible burn-in artifacts. Something to keep in mind...
How did you manage to use custom resolution to be able to play ultrawide? I got mine recently, I already changed the cable (hdmi, display port), formatted the pc and nothing works
How much room do you have for clearance from the back of the wall to your desk for the monitor arm?
Sure, the LG has better blacks when a lot light reflects off the screen, but it also is way more reflective and acts more like a mirror. I would find those reflections too distracting I think. In my opinion, the coating on the Alienware is a good compromise, because it maintains the image clarity of glossy panels, while cutting down significantly on mirror like reflections. For true blacks, a dark room, or ideally, a pitch black one is needed anyway. I think IPS monitors can also look great during the day in a fairly bright room. It's at night, in a dim environment, where they fall apart, while OLED shows its strength.
Hi, what monitor arm are you using?
What are you using to mount the lightbulb connected to the ergotron monitor arm?
I honestly thought your next would be that 57-59", that one looks amazing with its curve. forgot name now :(
Hi David! Great video! I'm just wondering about the burn-in situation, especially for those of us who use it 60% for productivity and 40% for gaming. Do you have any concerns about burn-in, especially with long hours having a menu toolbar on it? I'm about to buy the Asus ROG Swift PG34WQDM, and I'm worried about the burn-in situation.
I assume you are still using the ergotron LX mount, but what is that light bulb attachement? Looks awesome!
what monitor arm is that?
You said with mouse and keyboard you play games in an ultrawide windowed mode, meaning 3840x1600? How do you do that as I see a lot of people see do to DSC you can’t use custom resolutions in HDMI or DP. Thank you!
What kind of monitor arm was that, i need something like that for a dual monitor setup… any recommendations?
You can also get a USB to 3.5mm adapter for console audio.
Yeah that was my biggest concern with the 32" as well, the loss of screen real estate. From your review it seems that really is a big loss. I think the golden ticket monitor for productivity is going to be that newly announced Dell 40" ultrawide with a 5120x2160p and 120Hz IPS Black display. The previous gen of these panels that were only available in 16:9 60Hz offered double the native contrast over normal IPS panels and look absolutely fantastic. But then for media consumption these panels (or the new LG competitors to these that also feature better text clarity but also the dual-mode 480Hz stuff, better SDR performance if previous gen TV panels and announced specs are any indication and high refresh BFI) can't be beaten. I think the release of these monitors and the ultrawide is far enough spread that I could justify getting both anyway and just learn to live with a wall of screens. 😅
I agree. Those 40" ultrawides are my dream displays for productivity. Give me that in OLED and I can be done with all these upgrades. I am considering running a dual screen setup in the meanwhile though I think I'll need a bigger desk. haha
@@HelloDavid 100%, really miss my UW while trying out this monitor. I think I'll be returning the the QF and waiting for a Mini LED UW. The predator X34 v3 looks really interesting at the moment. Did you notice any eye strain with this monitor? I've been strangely getting eye fatigue and strain with this monitor which is really unfortunate because I'll be staring at this screen for 8 hours a day minimum for work.
@MrUltimateX No I haven't experienced eye strain with this.
Hey David what speakers do you have on your desk?
men of culture, we assemble again after a year for the content GOAT
Forget the monitor I'm curious about the monitor arm with the light bulb??
Can you please do a video in a bit more detail on how the macro pad works, I would love to add one of these myself! Great video though!
I have a video on Version 1 of my macropad here th-cam.com/video/DTJSREjWH7Y/w-d-xo.html I've made some modification since then but its still a work in progress for V2
I think the MSI 321URX would fix a lot of your complaints. It has headphone out, no fan, usb-c with 90W of power delivery and a built-in KVM. Really hoping that it is going to be as good as it sounds.
It's trash tbh ... it has a problem with the red color, probably due the stupid coating. Those youtubers talks a bit about that into the reviews but it's way worse than they say, trust me. It may work ok for gaming but for desktop the only usable profile is sRGB. Also their OSD (profile, settings and stuffs) is closed beta stage...
Wait for different models, aim for a glossy coating not that semi-matte ...
Re Split screen, have you tried Microsoft Edge spit screen feature?...avoids needing as much screen manipulation
Is qd oled safe to do work on? Is it true you shouldn't keeps static images on these qd oled because it can cause burn in?
Do you have the link for that macro pad? Great vid. Thank you!
4:00 omg please what is the system support for that bulb behind the monitor ?!
i clearly want the same !
Does anybody know what lamp socket David uses on the monitor arm @ 3:55 ? That’s such a great idea for a backlight!
It's an Ikea cord set attached with 3d printed mount. I just uploaded it here if you're curious. makerworld.com/en/models/159193#profileId-174740
3:54 this fan might be an issue, please give us update later if it's annoying or not. For me it might be deal breaker. And also, what do you think about multi monitor setup with this one? I mean two of them side by side?
what monitor arm can hold ur lg 48"? thank you
For size, this 38" 4K PG38UQ should fit the use case
I'm waiting on a monitor with improved brightness and black levels (probably need a glossy coating for that). Got a stopgap a few months ago since I figured we're a bit away from that.
David, for your 48" or 42" OLED, after 4 yr., do you have any burn in?
Which Monitor Arm do you use? Is it with a light bulb?
Wait. That light bulb mount on the back of your Ergotron arm. Is there a file for that?!? I have the same arm and an extra bulb sitting around
YOU'RE BACK OMG!!!
i'm thinking about the same upgrade.. currently using an LG C2 42". My main reason to upgrade is SDR brightness, the LG C2 can be a little bit dim during daytime. The QD-OLED is supposed to be brighter on SDR.. ~250-300 nits (i guess depending on the manufacturer and if they use a heatsink or not) which is a little better than the ~150-190 nits of the LG C2.
I love the colors in QD-OLED but i'm wondering if the LG 32" OLED monitor coming with MLA panel will be even better brighter in SDR content.. I'm used to 500/600 nits of full screen brightness like the apple studio display.
If the LG reaches 500 nits full screen brightness i think i would prefer it over a QD-OLED that only gets to 250-300 nits.
It was a hard choice but i finally chose LG C3 42" over the Alienware.. the complete package for me will be 42" with blacks of an Oled & 240hz 4K + top notch HDR quality.. and yes perfect text clarity.. curved or not i dk lol
is there an oled monitor has the same blacks as c2 on the market?
What monitor arm do you use?
Where can one get the macro pad shown in this video?
what speakers do you use?
OH MY GOD ! A david zhang videoooooooooo dude post more videos
Just got the 27" AW2725DF... It's like a dream come true!
Could you do a video about how you have this AW3225QF setup settings wise? Are you using Smart HDR? Desktop in SDR then manually enabling HDR for gaming? Some other option?

I’m still a huge fan of my AW34 OLED
That's a shame about the blacks appearing grey. I feel that negates one of the OLED features that I desire: perfect blacks. I'll wait a bit to see if anything changes or how other models fare. Thanks for the review.
Where did you buy your monitor arm?
I've got to say, those lifted magenta looking blacks completely kill the vibe for me. I asking myself - what is the point of having a theoretical infinite contrast ratio if the black levels are just going to be so grey in anything but a pitch black room?
What monitor arm is that? Anyone has any clue?
I would consider returning it if I saw those micro scratches tbh. my 34 inch Alienware ultrawide oled was pristine out of the box.
Welcome back!
Which wood is your desk?
but rtings said qd oled is more susceptible to woled
and the magenta tint when there is ambient light is bad
because i usually use dark mode for some webpage and some apps, includin windows
Any flickering when using any kind of VRR?
oh wow you're back. welcome back
