Wonder is my favorite 2D Mario ever. Period. And this is coming from some one who was born in the mid 2000s and grew up playing pretty much every single 2D Mario game (Thanks in part to Virtual Console and some ports) Wonder is pretty much every thing I've wanted a 2D Mario game to be for years since the New Super Series was kinda uninspiring as much as I enjoyed those games. It's incredibly creative and wacky and each level always seems to offer something fun and unique. Plus the game is just really fun to run through and go for 100%. In fact I've currently 100% this game 5 times now since I bought it when it came out. I hope the next 2D Mario game is a sequel to Wonder or at the very least can live up to this level of excellency.
I thoroughly enjoyed my Mario Wonder playthrough, but for some reason it doesn't feel like a game I'd go back to. I don't know what is the reason, but I have no interest in replaying it unlike most mario games. It is still an excellent game though They also screwed multiplayer badly, no collision ruins the whole thing
I mean... it's good that there was such a long break between 2D games, not only "absence makes the heart grow fonder", but also they had a lot, LOT time to think about new crazy ideas for the next game. And they pulled it off, oh, they pulled it off perfectly... AS much as I loved the earlier (New) Super Mario Bros (except for the soundtrack, no more BAAS forever pls), Wonder is just perfection. Especially if you get a full crew to play with. The salt, the WTFs, the joy once you get through that five-diffculty-star course... Don't feel bad about the goombas - think about how many times you were screwed by them in the previous games. RULES OF NATURE! They are pests of the Mushroom Kingdom, you're just doing what you have to do as the apex predator (it's for the good of the ecosystem, believe me, they are like... invasive species!). Actually it is like that: if something bigger can prey on you in the wild - it will if it feels like it. It's just... animalistic instinct, you know? I mean, personally I like freeing insects and transporting snails from the pavement after the rain so they won't get stomped. But the painful truth is that sometimes us killing something is actually more humane than if it would be killed in the wild and died a gruesome death of being eaten alive or something. World is a harsh place, so maybe we shouldn't overthink too much. I agree about some concepts being underused, but at the same time... it also makes it kind of special, no? I pity the egg-heads that will have to come with the new ideas for the sequel. Eh, badges did feel a bit like an afterthought. We pretty much picked "random" and then laughed once we got screwed by getting a bad badge. They... tried and I think it is fine as it is. Making them too integral to the game would kill the game's pace in my opinion. They are really "cautious" when it comes to bosses in 2D games, aren't they? Especially with the "Wonder" theme. I mean... Broodals for the odyssey were superb. Why were you learning latin? I mean... I did too. ...I was the last year that had to do that - Medical Latin got fully replaced by English terminology nowadays. Latin declension gave me flashbacks to learning German (I mean, I like it as a language very much and everything in German sounds so much cooler, but grammar is just so different). I was bit surprised with your opinion of this game. Personally it's perhaps my favorite of the mainline series (okay, maybe bit behind the Galaxy duology). Lacklustre soundtrack would be perhaps my only gripe about it. By the way, I'm sure you know, but Xenoblade Chronicles X is getting a re-release. Darn, I feel like a dummy for buying a WiiU. It became pretty much completely obsolete. THANKS SWITCH.
I unironically love the BAAHs more than the "a capella" approach for some of the Wonder tracks... I thought maybe it would grow on me after some time but it didn't... Goombas never screwed me over because if I get defeated by a Goomba then I know it was my own fault! Being topped by such a weak creature you just have to admit that you were the one at fault for losing, instead of putting the blame onto them! Same goes for insects, unless you come from Australia, then I would kinda understand if you didn't try to be nice to some of the critters that live over there. Feels good to live in a safe country without overly dangerous insects or animals. Don't need to be worried when going camping... except for ticks. Those should be eradicated actually. You had to pick a second language to learn at the gymnasium I went to and the only choices were Latin and French. And at the time I just thought, why not go for Latin? It's way cooler than French! Luckily the next school I went to let me pick from actual things I was interested in like IT instead of a language I would have never used outside of school... My own personal favorite in the 2D games must be Yoshi's Island if it would count (I know, even if its called World 2 it's not really a Mario game) or otherwise it's Mario Bros. 3. Kinda the generic pick but playing that back then and seeing the huge difference to the first one was like, woah! for me and stuck with me, even on the Allstars version I played. I'm luckily not THAT old yet that I played the originals on the NES back then... And it sounds harsher than I meant it! I still loved it but something just felt... lacking. That's what a 11 year gap does to you I guess. Hoping for that "true" change that didn't really came with it. Doesn't have to be a super big change like any 3D Zelda game to BotW but just... something different than the typical bing bing wahoo! But I know that's on me instead of blaming the game for it. Hey, there's still tons of great games stuck on the Wii U now like... Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival! I'm happy I was never interested in a WiiU, even as a huge Nintendo fan. Only thing I am a bit sad about was missing out on the Miiverse. (Mostly thanks to Cemu being able to make me play Xenoblade X, the only game I truly really wanted to play on it). Really excited to do a replay of it again even if I already did it recently for my XBX video on its world... I will miss the old faces though...
@@Vanserchan :O I mean, a capella is bit basic, but... eh, I guess I'm just a simple man. They still are living obstacle. It's like when you're in an extreme hurry but some people just are in your way because they move all weird. Don't be a goomba apologist. I agree with ticks. They are extremely weird beings. Screw them for being a vector of boreliosis and meningitidis. Well, my fav 2D Mario (outside of Wonder, obviously) would be the original Super Mario Brothers. You say that Wonder didn't change much to the formula... but did the others do all that much? Outside of the overworld of course, that was a nice idea. ...and while I'm also not from the NES generation, bootleg NES were commonstays in the 90s Poland as they were affordable and offered a lot of quality games. I remember how shocked I was when after getting the Internet around 2004 I realized that my NES was bootleg all along. I mean... it felt like a really honest and loving try. I mean, including Daisy was nice! I would hope for Rosalina and Wario/Waluigi too, but that's rather unlikely, isn't it. Eh, WiiU is a tale nearly as sad as PS VIta.
@@Hodyna As a German I am NEVER in a hurry because I make sure to get to my destination 3 hours before I am supposed to be there! (Totally not because our trains LOVE to run late) While the DS and Wii game also didn't really change too much it just probably helped that there was that big break in between for them for me. Going from the 2D games to the new models and all was like, damn, we are finally playing another 2D Mario on the big screen, that kind of feeling. Especially with the amazing multiplayer in the Wii one. Which all stems from my nostalgic feelings I think. Going through another big break just made me long for that something special. And I know it's mostly also my own wishes, most people want Mario to be Mario, like Wonder perfectly did with all of its ideas. But to me I sometimes think, what if they really changed stuff around like Galaxy or Sunshine did? Could go totally wrong, could also be amazing though.
I really enjoyed my run through Wonder last year. Aside from the visuals, which are very gorgeous, the level design I think is the strongest point. It would kinda have to be anyway for a major Mario game, as the team knew they had to live up to all the amazing user-generated content of Maker. Finding secrets was probably the most fun part. Like finding the pipe in that one underground level that sinks you down to the Wonder event. I remember it well! In some ways, Zelda Echoes of Wisdom is the Zelda franchise's equivalent of Mario Wonder. They both pay homage to their respective series' roots yet shake things up just enough to feel new and fresh. I quite like the modern approach. Even if neither game is particularly mind-blowing. Wonder is the good 2D alternative to Odyssey in being the one with the classic flavor that manages to please the old and new school fans!
its one year old already???
