Okay so first off THANK YOU so much for over 100k views on this video!!! This one was a solo endeavor from me (Charlie) that I had been putting together in my spare time for fun and I never expected it to explode the way it did!
I figured I'd write a quick FAQ because whilst I usually try and respond to all comments, this video has gone too far beyond me having the time unfortunately! I'm extremely thankful for the comments all the same and will try answer the most frequent questions I've seen but I can't get to them all!
I'll preface by saying that almost EVERYTHING in this series is contradicted at some point or another and this is no right answer to basically any of it. It's not a series that was designed to be mapped out which is what makes the exercise so fun! It allows for creative liberties and gives you the ability to weigh up evidence for and against something and ultimately make a decision!
One persons interpretation is as valid as another and this was the version that made the most sense to me!
Polite debate is very much welcome but I strongly discourage being needlessly rude to others in the comments section because they disagree with how a very loosely established fictional planet should be mapped out, it's just a bit of fun guys!(: No need to insult each other!
Q: What about Evershade Valley, Last resort, Wario Land 3 etc. etc.?
A: If ANY specific game/location isn't mentioned, its simply because there wasn't enough evidence to draw a conclusion worth mapping out. Wario Land 3 takes place in a music box for example, Master of disguise in Wario's TV. There's nothing that suggests WHERE those things are so mapping it would be a complete shot in the dark and not worth doing imo!
I do mention "the Luigi's mansion titles" collectively in the Darkland segment which is why 2/3's locations aren't mentioned specifically.
Q: Doesn't Throwback galaxy mean 64's painting worlds are real?
A: Very possible! Imo not enough when faced with the 3 official sources that suggest the painting worlds aren't real.
In the same way the SM64DS changed level designs aren't canon because it is a reimagining, I don't think this differently designed whomps fortress (less pushing blocks, no canons etc.) that doesn't even share the same name is absolutely the same place. It's in a completely different galaxy, it's not too much of a stretch to imagine it's just similar or with a name like "throwback galaxy", maybe the galaxy itself somehow cosmically constructs it's own image after an observers memories! That's kind of fun!
Either way, the evidence against them being real out rules the evidence for in this case imo!
Q: Isn't subcon real because of BS Super Mario USA?
A: Maybe yeah! Like I said earlier, this franchise contradicts itself a LOT. I overlooked this in my research so I'll happily hold the L on that one!
In subcon's case, I chose to go with the original SMB2 canon that shows Mario waking from a dream and since we haven't seen subcon or wart since, I believe it was probably just a regular dream but there is absolutely evidence to support otherwise! This is entirely up to your interpretation!
Q: Shouldn't Hyrule/Metroid/Sonic etc. be canon because of cameo's and spinoffs?
A: I believe cameos are just that. At some point you have to draw a line and say "Okay Link's in Mario Kart" but that doesn't make zelda canon to Mario because he originates from another non-canon franchise unlike Banjo and Conker and if he does exist, he'd be a complete idiot for sticking to horses when hover cars and spaceships exist!
As far as Sonic goes, he's only ever met Mario at real life locations so even if you do chose to believe the olympic games are canon, they definitely don't belong on a map of Mario's planet!
Lastly, I've seen a lot of people ask for a PNG of the map so here's that! imgur.com/a/ENJThJu

    • @DaNintendude
      @DaNintendude 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

First off, SMB2's original manual makes it clear that Subcon is a dream world. It's not just BS SMUSA that shows that. It's stated that Mario cannot wake up due to the curse Wart has placed upon the land. This is why he was still dreaming even after he woke up the first time.
I think it's reductive to deflect points with "the series contradicts itself all the time!" -cause it really doesn't, at least in terms of lore.
Given this video is about maps, I think it's a valid comeback for map placement though. The games do indeed change maps up a lot, and it only makes sense. A game is only gonna show the areas you're visiting, so their relation to areas from past games isn't usually addressed.

there is actual canonicity in thinking that bowser's kingdom is in mushroom kingdom, in bowser's inside story, peach is holding a meeting over an illness that had plagued the kingdom, and when she asks why bowser came, he says, and i quote "Guess what? I live here, your Royal genius!"

A few things I'd like to point out:
    1. The Yoshi's Island in SMW is likely not the same island as in the Yoshi's Island game, as they have different names in Japan. Instead, the island that's part of Dinosaur Land is actually the same one as Yo'ster Island from SMRPG, as well as the one from Partners in Time, whereas the large one seen in every other game (with the blue central mountains) is the actual "Yoshi's Island", which btw definitely still exists in the modern day as seen in Yoshi Topsy Turvy and MK8D, so it didn't erode or anything.
    2. Subcon is in fact a real location in an alternate dimension that is merely accessed via dreaming. This is proven by SMB2's obscure Satellaview sequel where Wart and his minions escape Subcon and invade Mario's world in retaliation for their previous defeat. That game also confirms that there are 3 Birdos (Pink, Red, and Green) within the ranks of the 8 Bits, as opposed to it being a single one who changes color throughout the games, so that's neat.
    3. Near the end of 3D World, you travel to space from the Sprixie Kingdom and run into Rosalina and her Comet Observatory, meaning that the Sprixie Kingdom is, at the very least, in the same dimension as the Mushroom Kingdom. At most, maybe the Sprixie Kingdom and Lake Lapcat are on a different planet, but although there was almost certainly some kind of spatial magic at work during that initial trip through the clear pipe, we can be sure it wasn't a warp to another dimension entirely.
    4. Speaking of Rosalina, at the end of Galaxy 1, the entire universe explodes and gets recreated, and Rosalina states that things might be different. In other words, it's one big get-out-of-jail-free-card that can explain why any pre-Galaxy geography doesn't match the post-Galaxy geography. For example, why Isle Delfino is directly on the equator in Sunshine, but seemingly further South in that Odyssey artwork.

Both Yoshi's Islands are the same, they just have 2 names.
Yo'ster Isle is possibly what the Yoshis call the island, while Yoshi's Island is a more generic title.
The only thing we know the universe reset did in Galaxy 1 is that the events of the game never happened. Galaxy 2 shows us what happened at the Star Festival post-reset. I find it unlikely that it just randomly changed a bunch of geography and virtually nothing else

    • @Eris1987

      It's also canon because.....
The Manual and in game info mentions the dream stuff and Mario telling his friends about it, but there's more.
There is a follow up called BSSMUSA which has Mario and Friends get called back by the King of Subcon to stop King Wart. It's also stated Mario and Friends don't know if SMB2USA was a dream or not.
Note Dream Realms aren't uncommon see Dream Team and the Dream Depot for examples. However, there is more.
Birdo in SMRPG remembers Mario, and their only previous encounter was in SMB2USA.
Birdo in a Paper game recalls the events of SMB2USA.
A Toad remembers the events of SMB2USA referring to it as a strange dream.
The Shy Guys of SuperStar Baseball are stated to be the ones that used to work for King Wart.

    • @Luigifan305
      @Luigifan305 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +69

They're absolutely not the same island. In fact, I was being generous with Yo'ster Island being a single island itself because it technically has a different appearance and location in every game that it's in. In SMW, it's part of Dinosaur Land, close enough to literally bridge over to Donut Plains, in SMRPG, it's a tiny, isolated island with nothing on it but a small racetrack, and in PiT, it's right off the coast of the Mushroom Kingdom itself.
If anything, these might be three separate Yo'ster Islands, but they're definitely still not THE Yoshi's Island, which has maintained its design in all appearances, as well as it's location far removed from any other land as far as the eye can see.
There's also the matter of size, as all three Yo'ster Islands are small enough to cross in minutes at most, whereas Yoshi's Island is so massive that across all of it's appearances it contains over 170 full levels, plus things like racetracks and golf courses.
It also doesn't line up lore-wise for them to be the same island, because the Yoshi tribe in PiT doesn't recognize Baby Mario. The tribe on THE Yoshi's Island are who helped him before, not the ones we see in PiT. This is further supported by the fact that we KNOW there are in fact multiple tribes of Yoshis across different islands in the world.
Also, if SMW Yo'ster Island is indeed the same as SMRPG Yo'ster Island, it would explain why Yoshi (as in, THE Yoshi, the main green one) is still there before later permanently moving to live in the Mushroom Kingdom. He was born on Yoshi's Island after YIDS (likely as the same one in Yoshi's Story), then as an adult he stopped Bowser in Topsy Turvy before leaving home and moving to the Yo'ster Island seen in SMW/SMRPG, then to the Mushroom Kingdom after that.

      @Luigifan305 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +21

@@Eris1987 Yes I know, BSSMBUSA is the aforementioned obscure Satellaview sequel I was referring to.
That said, Birdo does NOT recognize Mario in SMRPG, in fact she explicitly introduces herself in a typical first meeting manner, saying "Hello♡! I'm Birdo.". This actually lines up with the theory that SMRPG actually comes before SMB2 in the timeline, in spite of release order. Going into detail about the timeline however is a whole other can of worms.

Daisy not normally tagging along due to distance, yet tagging along during the events of Wonder, *CAN* actually fit into this idea just fine.
Bowser basically just decided to strike during a diplomatic meeting of some kind; If events were to occur while the mushroom kingdom's and sarasaland's leadership are both meeting with the flower kingdom's leadership for discussions, then of course Daisy would get involved, *she's already there.*

I think people misunderstood what Miyamoto was saying when he said all the Marios are the same Mario. In the context of the interview he was just saying that in the mainline Mario games it’s always the same Mario, as opposed to Zelda where almost every mainline game has a new Link, Zelda, and Ganon.
Honestly never thought of Wario as being from Sarassaland, but yeah that makes total sense.

    • @Eris1987
      @Eris1987 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +136

      I still think that's a misunderstanding.
Miyamoto has often been taken out of context if not misunderstood when he says things.
For example, people have claimed Miyamoto said the Mario cast are actors when did not say this. What he did say was "it's more LIKE they're one big family, or maybe a troupe of actors." A simile as in they are like that.
In addition to this not everything Miyamoto says is gospel, and people only treat what Miyamoto says as such when it comes to Mario.
While when it comes to Zelda people get on him for saying incorrect things about the lore. (I think he does this on purposes and does the same for Mario lore.)
People have also misinterpreted things he's said such as jokes he's made.(Which are the Mangle's Gender is Yes levels of jokes.)For example his Bowser Junior's mother joke, his Dr. Mario jokes, and his Mario Mario Link Link joke.
People also forget there are many people working on the games, and that the games are more the result of collaborative story telling rather than the words of one man.
This should be further evident by the facts while Miyamoto does have a hand in the Mario games, he has mostly been hands off and let's the dev teams do there own thing while checking in on them.(Part of the reason Sticker Star had such bad gameplay. Miyamoto said that it was bad and not fun and Intelligent Systems refused to change it.)
Here's how I believe people should prioritize information.
      1. If it's not done in the form of a joke, given that's one of the most obvious.
      2. If there was nothing in game to go off of, and in addition to being repeated elsewhere that further cements it's validity. Like with Donkey Kong for example.
      3. If it is meant to clarify something like with Captain Toad not being the Main Toad.
      4. If it's something that would have obviously been retconned.
      5. If it is backed up by the games and manuals like with Waluigi or the Bowser Kingdom.
      6. If it doesn't contradict the games and manuals like with Yoshi being called a turtle/Koopa by Tezuka(No I'm not referring to development but a separate interview.)
      7. If it's not a quote mine.(This happens a lot)
      8. Priority for lore should be in-game dialogue and descriptions, then the Japanese manuals, then the manuals, then website information, then developer interviews, and then stuff Miyamoto says.
      9. In addition to that last one, if only one source claims it and everything else contradicts that one source then the single source is wrong. Case in point, a DK64 blunder about Cranky.
As for it being the same or main line claim. There is a problem there because typical what is regarded as main line is the 2D and 3D games but people even still fight on what to include, thus making it really subjective. From here people use this to say everything else is not canon.
From there it begs the question of what about games like Donkey Kong which SMO acknowledges as canon for example.
In addition the same Mario is further confirmed by the threads that connect games together and even can be acknowledged as canon by Nintendo.
The About section on the Nintendo website says "You may know him as a famous plumber, but he’s also a kart racer, sports star, caped hero, and more! "
The character profile for Mario on the Nintendo website says "Mario excels at sports including tennis, golf, baseball, soccer, and even kart racing. He's good at all of them! He's a plumber by profession but is really a jack of all trades."
Peach's says "Princess Peach is always game for a variety of sports, and also enjoys baking and cooking."
Meanwhile games like Mario + Rabbids are outright stated to not be canon at all.
      As for paper Mario.......
There are 2 Paper Mario's one who got pulled into the main world during Paper Jam and had not been through the events of Inside Story or Sticker Star.
The other being the Main Mario who can take on a Paper form like he does with a pixel form.
This is why characters like King Goomboss whose existence relies on on the events of PM64 having happened shows up.
Alongside other characters like the Star Spirits, the Koopatrol, and Whackas also showing up.
The Blocks of Nostalgia which are blocks from Mario's past adventures has a Paper Block from PM64 among them.

I think I’m gonna have to argue against the idea of the Piantas being colonial invaders of Isle Delfino. The Piantas and Nokis japanese names are the Monte and the Mare, literally meaning the mountains and the sea. That also matches with where we see their traditional homelands, the Pianta Village is situated atop the islands highest mountain, while Noki Bay is hidden largely underwater. I also don’t see much merit in the idea that the Piantas set up Pinna Park given that we know the owner of the park is a Noki, and the majority of the performers and attendees at the park are also Nokis. Even the idea that the harsh sentencing that the Piantas aim at Mario is a sign of colonialism is arguably the opposite. They only respond that way to an environmental catastrophe caused by an outsider, which would be really weird if they were the outsiders exploiting the island.

Regarding the size of the Odyssey map scale, it's safe to assume that Mario's planet is bigger than Earth, given that gravity is significantly higher in most games.
So, eyeballing that the mushroom kingdom is roughly the size of France, relative to the size of the planet. And using the most reputable source after hours of research (the first result on Google), the Mario world is 73% larger than Earth. Doing a bit of math, the total area of the mushroom kingdom would be roughly 637,000 mi^2 or 1,649,000 km^2.
This would rank it (compared to our countries) at 17th place between Libya and Iran, plus this is only the main island. So, I think Mario Odyssey's map scale would work in the canon of Mario.

So as an example; I do believe the events of Thousand-year door DID happen, with non-paper versions Rogueport and it's in inhabbitants existing in the mario universe. it's just that the version we see in-game is the storybook retelling, with certain aspects of it (like for example, the curses which allow paper mario to fold) being made up for the story, and thus non-canon.

The rabbits also only appear in space based rhythm games like in marcher (takes place on a ship) and also bunny hop (the bunny is hopping into space) also this makes heaven world a cannon part of space in Mario’s world. I have to disagree with the idea that Paper Mario is not the real Mario--instead, I posit it's another Super Mario Bros. 3 situation. The Super Mario Bros. 3 we see is a play, yes, but it's a depiction of events that HAD to have happened. Not only is it the Koopalings' debut, the manual of Super Mario World confirms the sunken airship you visit before the Valley of Bowers as a crashed airship from the events of Mario 3 (somehow having ended up in Dinosaur Land). Much like how someone wrote a play version of one of Mario's adventures, Herringway wrote a book based on Mario's attempt to save Peach one time, and in TTYD, there's a minor Toad NPC in West Rogueport that does the same for THAT journey. It's important to note that the abilities to allow Mario to fold himself up like paper in TTYD are depicted as curses, the effects of magic that contort Mario's body in odd ways that normal people cannot do. As for the living office supplies in Origami King, I believe that has an in-game explanation as well, and it's ALSO magic. A technique called 'The Fold of Life' was used by Olly to bring the supplies used by his creator to life as minions, so it's not like living office supplies are a normal thing in Paper Mario.
Not to mention, the blocks in the Paper Mario games show up in Woohoo Hooniversity in Superstar Saga as one of the blocks that's in the research lab, literally called 'The Block from Paper Mario,' so they had to get that block SOMEHOW.
Quick Edit: As for how the games' locations would fit in? Surprisingly easy. Paper Mario is just a bunch of Mushroom Kingdom biomes, with Lavalava Island probably being part of Dinosaur Land because of the Yoshi and Raven presence. Rogueport, on the other hand, is a bit weirder, but I believe it's mentioned as technically being part of the Mushroom Kingdom since Peach was mentioned traveling 'on vacation in the Mushroom Kingdom' and Rogueport was meant to be a quick pit stop where her ship could refuel. I wouldn't be surprised if something like Twilight Town was actually a settlement somewhere in the Dark Lands or something.

_" The Super Mario Bros. 3 we see is a play, yes, but it's a depiction of events that HAD to have happened."_
The nature of SMB3 is a bit weird. While Miyamoto has claimed it was a stage play, there is the thing that Miyamoto's word can't always be used for Mario lore.
There is also the thing that the games are meant to feel like you are playing an action movie adventure or in this case stage play.
A theme present in even the first game. _"The Mario inside the TV is you. Only you can bring this adventure quest (expedition) to a conclusion."_
But even if it is a stage play in universe, like you said it's probably based on real events. If anything it would be made by Broadway Musical Entertainment.
Good points but there is more.
In SMO Bowser is shown to remember the events if SMB3.
MP9 establishes the Grasslands is a thing and is the greater area of the Mushroom Kingdom.
Figure 8 Circuit is established to be located in the SMB3 area of the Grasslands.
A SMB3 Tank shows up in Tropical Freeze.
      The Airship debuted in SMB3.
SMB3 was Mario and Luigi's first usage of their modern outfits.
Similar to how the Koopalings debuted in SMB3, so to did many iconic enemies as established in the manual. _"A host of new characters have joined Bowser and his turtle tribe. With this information on these new enemies, you'll be prepared."_
And Super Mario Sunshine even has it listed off as one of the Mario's Previous Adventures.
_"somehow having ended up in Dinosaur Land"_
Since Bowser would have been on the Ship I think what happened was Bowser decided to try to conquer Dinosaur Land soon after the events of SMB3. Part of his motive might have been revenge on Yoshi for the events of Tospy Turvy.
_"It's important to note that the abilities to allow Mario to fold himself up like paper in TTYD are depicted as curses, the effects of magic that contort Mario's body in odd ways that normal people cannot do"_
Aside from the fact Mario can normally be turned in a pinball, flattened like a pancake, or roll up into a ball and use his body as an attack.
There is apparently interviews that basically say that Mario takes on a Paper Form.
That's not out of the ordinary seeing Mario has taken on a Pixel Form before multiple times, and there is the whole Culex gag.
_"As for the living office supplies in Origami King, I believe that has an in-game explanation as well, and it's ALSO magic. A technique called 'The Fold of Life' was used by Olly to bring the supplies used by his creator to life as minions, so it's not like living office supplies are a normal thing in Paper Mario."_
Plus it's not like Mario and Donkey Kong haven't fought sentient swords in this high fantasy world.
_"Not to mention, the blocks in the Paper Mario games show up in Woohoo Hooniversity in Superstar Saga as one of the blocks that's in the research lab, literally called 'The Block from Paper Mario,' so they had to get that block SOMEHOW."_
It's explicitly stated they are made of different materials and having differing effects, and that all of them are from previous Mario Adventures. The Paper Block being from Paper Mario aka Paper Mario 64. Given we see the Pixel Block too this give more credit to there being literal forms.
_"Lavalava Island probably being part of Dinosaur Land because of the Yoshi and Raven presence."_
The exact placement of Dinosaur Land, a lot of interview imply it's part of the Cascade Kingdom. If not at least separate from the Mushroom Continent. But at the same time there is the weirdness of the Yoshi's Island games.
That aside I believe there is a map showing Lavalava Island as a standalone island within lake or Inland sea to the South of the Grasslands.
I would imagine Rogueport if in the Mushroom Continent is within the Inland Sea.
      Some extra stuff
As for In the track Kalimari Desert there is a train that runs through that looks very similar to the K64. Now someone might say, well that's Kalimari Desert not Dry Dry Desert. Well...... hehehe.
Kalimari Desert is Karakara Sabaku in Japanese, meaning Dry Dry Desert. This is also the Japanese name of Dry Dry Desert. It's the same place.
We also see the Dry Dry Ruins which were raised during the events of Paper Mario 64, as tracks in Mario Kart.
In Paper Mario Sticker Star there is a desert you travel by going East called Drybake Desert. Turns out Drybake Desert is called Kara Kara Sabaku meaning Dry Dry Desert. Again this desert shows up up, and in Sticker Star we see a Yoshi Sphinx. What's notable about this is in the Mario Kart Wii of Dry Dry Ruins there is a Yoshi Sphinx.
Since this desert is to the East the it's probably part of the Desert we see in New Super Mario Bros Wii, and New Super Mario Bros DS. Both of which you travel east from the Mushroom Kingdom to get to. The greater Desert is probably called Desert Land or Desert Hills since that place is implied to be East of the Grasslands.
Shiver Mountain is Samui Samui Yama in Japanese apparently meaning Cold Cold Mountain. Cool Cool Mountain is Samui Samui Maunten in Japanese meaning Cold Cold Mountain as well.
You have characters like the Whackas, Star Spirits, Koopatrol showing up in the main world.
There is characters like King Goomboss who existence relies on the events of Paper Mario 64.

The word "prince" actually comes from the latin word "princeps" which means the highest, or the first in order, and was also the highest rank in the Senate of the Roman Republic. This is the reason why the Western Christian world got angry at the Welsh Kings for calling themselves Princes of Wales, because being a princeps would mean they outranked even Kings. As for it being called a Kingdom rather than a Principality, you can say the same about the British Empire. It wasn't ruled by an Emperor, but a King, right? Either way, that would make sense as to why there were so many toad Kings in the Mushroom Kingdom in Super Mario Bros. 3, because a princeps having Kings as vassals is a natural thing.

"We can assume Odyssey's globe isn't accurate, the Mushroom Kingdom cannot possibly be this small"
Have you ever considered that Mario's planet may just be really massive? Odyssey doesn't show us anything but the main tourist destinations of each kingdom. What if each of these other kingdoms really ARE that big by comparison to the Mushroom Kingdom? I am pretty sure that's supposed to be the implication that Odyssey makes-that up until this point, Mario has only been exploring a (relatively) small continent of the world and its surrounding islands, and now in Odyssey he's seeing little slices of the whole, much-larger planet.
You seem to have this perception that all the world maps in Mario have to be roughly the same scale, which I don't think is the case at all. After all, we only ever see this planet up-close in small slices, on a level-sized scale. But how big is the space in between these levels? Must two "worlds" with the same amount of stages really be the same physical size? It's not like there's any canonical answer to the question of "how much physical space is there BETWEEN levels on a Mario world map?" And so the answer very well may vary from game to game, or even from world to world. And you can absolutely have a big adventure in a relatively small place!
For example, who says that the Yoshi's Island from SMW _can't_ be the one from SMW2? Sure, the SMW one might LOOK small, but that _could_ just mean that Dinosaur Land really is that big by comparison. I mean, "Yoshi's Island only has 4 levels in SMW" does NOT mean "Yoshi's Island is only 4 levels big..." it could simply mean that Mario just didn't spend much time there. Or that we simply see less OF the time he spent there! The levels themselves aren't the only places on the island that exist, after all. Again, they're just small slices of a much bigger land and planet.
So why would the whole "island was broken up by erosion" theory be more likely? It might make sense if SMW2 took place in prehistoric times, but no, it happened while Mario was alive, and that kind of erosion does not happen in one lifetime! (Also, I am aware they have different names in Japanese, so they're probably different locations anyway, but I wanted to make my point about scale so I used this as an example.)
Now, of course, I appreciate that this is all just an opinion. And I think that in terms of positioning you make a lot of good points. I also learned a lot from this video! I wouldn't take the time to write all this out if I didn't respect the video and its maker enough to hope that he might be willing to read this.

Well, for one thing, "Yoshi's Island" from SMW1 and Yoshi's Island from SMW2 aren't the same place because they have different names in the original Japanese. The name of "Yoshi's Island" in SMW1 was originally Yo'ster Isle, while Yoshi's Island in SMW2 was literally Yoshi Island. For whatever reason, the localization teams never made this distinction, but it exists in the Japanese source material.
In light of this, the erosion theory completely... erodes. (Couldn't help it lol)
As for the "Mario's planet is actually on a far greater scale than we think" theory, given the enormous variety of biomes and climates in the Mushroom Kingdom continent alone, if the other continents depicted in Oddysey's globe map are to scale, it would have to mean the planet is absolutely MASSIVE, as in much larger than Earth. Which means gravitational force is much stronger there than on Earth.
Either this mean's the planets inhabitants are ridiculously strong by Earthen standards, and Mario and crew's feats of defying gravity are that much more gravity defying, given their floatiness... Or Oddysey's globe map is just simply not to scale at all and the video is absolutely correct about it being an abstraction.
It's hard to say which is true, because a lot of things in Mario's world makes no logical sense from our perspective. A world where mushrooms instantly multiply your body's cell count total without deadly repercussions, and flowers allow you to instantly will a spherical conflagration to be pushed and bounce from your hands while completely ignoring conservation of energy is clearly a world where our laws of physics do not apply. Considering even our planet has continental drift, for all we know, the continents in Mario's world experience some extreme form of drift and therefore the Oddysey globe map is not set in stone at all. So we're kind of back to square one...

One thing you technically left out is the dual universes.
In the end of Super Mario Galaxy 1, Bowser’s Galaxy Reactor literally destroys the universe, and all the lumas have to sacrifice themselves to make a new universe. This means that all of the areas from Galaxy 1 no longer exist (except the ones that did come back to some extent, like the 8 bit mario planet from Toy Time).
It also means that some areas described in this video could no longer exist due to the planet getting destroyed and remade, it all depends on when Galaxy happens in the timeline.

The differences could be explained by seismic activity.
In the GBA version of DKC1, we can see magma in Chimp Caverns, meaning there's definitely volcanic activity.
A massive volcano eruption could've blown up the peaks of the Volcano (Gorilla Glacier), and tremors could've caused the DK head to crumble, exposing prehistoric cliffs.
The Kremlings have likely been off doing their own thing and may return in the future. With that being said, there are Kremling ruins on DK Island in DKC1. However, just because we don't see Krenling ruins in the modern games doesn't mean they don't still exist. DKCR has a very literal depiction of the island that only shows what is relevant to gameplay. In the cutscenes, the island appears very small. The forest has a very small amount of trees, and they're all proportionally massive. Cranky's cabins across the island are also huge. We know from the levels themselves that the island is much bigger and less abstract than the map/cutscenes show.

I'd like to add a counterpoint. Around the time you stated that bowser junior's paintbrush teleports you, making it different from the paintings in mario 64 which send you to pocket dimensions. I feel as if this is contradicted by the existence of throwback galaxy in Mario Galaxy 2. I believe this means that Thwomps Fortress is a real location, but that the paintings act like warps / portals as is common to the mario series. I believe it's even plausible that a good chunk of the world's featured on planet. Falling from the Metal Cap stage brings you through the waterfall, Vanish Cap stage is under a hole in the ground, there are sky stages where if you fall, you land in the gardens in front of the castle etc

Bowser used the Power of the Stars to create the paintings and began to order the various inhabits to do his bidding. Characters like King Bob-omb, and King Whomp.
The paintings Bowser created using the Power of the Stars is not the only ones. There are ones that have been around long before the main cast more than likely made using the Power of the Stars littering Peach's Castle Grounds. They all lead to real locations so one would ask, do the paintings Bowser made lead to real locations as well? the answer is yes.
      You also have....
Bob-omb battlefield can be found on Peach's Castle Grounds as seen in Mario Golf Toadstool Tour.
Shiver Mountain is Samui Samui Yama in Japanese apparently meaning Cold Cold Mountain. Cool Cool Mountain is Samui Samui Maunten in Japanese meaning Cold Cold Mountain as well.

Since Dark Moon doesn't give us any hints at where Evershade Valley could be, the best we could theorise is that it's somewhere along the large expanse of continents shown in Mario Odyssey, maybe. The valley doesn't look like an island, so it must be on a bigger landmass. E. Gadd did say in the first Luigi's Mansion game that he travels the world in persuit of ghosts to study on. The mansions in Evershade Valley have more humanlike than Toadlike, given the human sized suits of armour in the Gloomy Manor and human shaped sarcophagus under the Old Clockworks, so possbly in the vacinity of the Metro Kingdom, but not too close.

While the painting worlds in Mario 64 are their own smaller worlds, there's several levels that are directly connected to the castle physically via magic outside of the Bowser levels.
    1. Hazy Maze Cave is accessed through the castle's catacombs through a waving pool of metallic liquid, and eventually the cave loops back around to the Cavern of the Metal Cap through the same metal pool. Should Mario exit through the waterfall, he actually ends up falling into the castle's moat and does not lose a life.
    2. Wing Mario over the Rainbow is another one of these secrets, which takes place far above Peach's Castle, and although it is accessed via a warp tunnel similar to Rainbow Ride, the connection it has to the real world can't be denied as falling from the area has Mario fall into the castle's lake.
    3. Big Boo's Haunt is the only location that is actually physically reached by Mario that isn't through teleportation magic, and seeing as it is a shrunken down mansion inside a cage leads me to believe it was once sealed away in this method by Peach and a Boo commandeered it as Bowser took over the castle.

A couple of headcannon adjustments for myself. 1. ALL the kingdoms in Odyssey are much larger than the areas we actually get to explore. That's why they look so big on the map. And the mushroom kingdom is the same size on the map as it is in game, it's just that the planet is really really big, making it look small. It still includes all those biomes. 2. The only Kong island are actually south of the Odyssey land mass, and re-oriented 180° so that the Northern Island IS still north of Doneky Kong island. I just think the current placement you have is too far north for it to be tropical. Either way great video. I love it when someome else takes these things way too serious like I do.

Regarding Paper Mario, it's likely that Mario's classic adventures happened in the Paper Mario world, or at least similar sorts of adventures that happen off-screen, as Mario, Luigi, Bowser, and Peach are all familiar with each other and the status quo by Paper Mario 64. We, the audience, take the original Mario games as context for this status quo, so it's not unreasonable to assume some version of Mario 1 took place in Paper Mario's world. So in theory, it's possible for some version of Thousand Year Door to have taken place in the flesh Mario world, just one that's less, y'know, papery.

      So....

It's honestly kinda wild how consistent Nintendo has kept Yoshis as non-native species, so far while being a very prominent character that appears in most games, as a partner character or as part of the main mario cast. They rarely appear in the Mushroom Kingdom but they always are abundant outside of it and/or in tropical settings. Isle Delfino, Yoshi's Island, Egg Island, Dinosaur land, Pi'illo island? Tropical places. Mario Galaxy 2? They're in space, so no Mushroom Kingdom. Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga? Bean bean kingdom, and they're almost like visiting rather than being locals. The only times they appear in the Mushroom Kingdom is in NSMB Wii and U, and in Odyssey and 64 where there's one single Yoshi.

I think it's funny how a lot of my critiques were instantly addressed after points were made.
For example, the Mushroom Kingdom has multiple deserts, mountainous regions, etc. We know this for a fact due to NSMBU and SMB3, which both have their own set of worlds completely separate to the usual ones we'd see. You mentioned immediately that everything probably isn't all blobbed up together like your map.
I still have some notes and critiques that I wrote down while watching:
The Koopa Kingdom (Bowser's home) is typically shown to the east of Peach's Castle, in basically every NSMB game and several RPGs. I think the only exception is Super Mario RPG, where Bowser's Castle is Northwest. Although the game also has a very abstract map that is hard to really glean anything worthwhile from. (EDIT: accidentally said Northeast at first)
While SMB3 has a stageplay as its framing device, the events of the game actually happened. Super Mario World is supposed to be a direct sequel, and the sunken ship is supposed to be an airship from SMB3. This is directly confirmed in the manual of both SMW and SMB3.
Furthermore, the "Mushroom World" (the worlds from SMB3) are shown to be on an eastern coast in Super Mario Advance 4's world map. Many of the worlds are islands in the ocean, and this includes Dark Land, meaning Dark Land likely isn't the typical Koopa Kingdom, but rather an island that Bowser owns/took over, and occupied during his takeover of the kingdoms.
My headcanon is that the Mushroom World lands are on the eastern coast of the Mushroom Kingdom, around the middle of the continent.
I think it's worth noting that WarioWare and Diamond City have loads of Japanese influence. Diamond City itself has a Japanese castle. In between Kat's home and Diamond City is a Mount Fuji lookalike. There's also Sleepytown Village in WarioWare Get it Together.
Chai is mostly Chinese themed, but irl, China and Japan are very close to each other, so perhaps Diamond City being close to Sarasaland isn't too big of a stretch. I would imagine it exists on a larger landmass than Diamond Island, though.
I also think it's important to mention that Wario himself is supposed to be from the Mushroom Kingdom-- due to the fact he was friends with Mario when they were babies. This doesn't mean Wario couldn't live in Sarasaland nowadays, but Wario had to have been acquainted with Mario long enough for them to be old friends.
Wario met Jimmy T of Diamond City when he was a kid, so he likely grew up in Diamond City. This has led some people to theorize that Diamond City is on the Mushroom Continent, outside of the Mushroom Kingdom itself (similar to the Beanbean and Flower Kingdoms). But I do still think a location near Sarasaland could be possible.
I don't think the Piantas colonized Isle Delfino. I'm not sure if there's any actual lore for this, but I'd imagine Pianta Village is their homeland, and they spread out to the rest of the island, and then the rest of the world.
I don't think the size discrepancy between Yoshi's Island in SMW vs SMW2 is too big of a deal. I'd imagine the path Mario takes through the island is just a very quick and easy one, and that he only stuck to the plains. The map in SMW would be a simplified version that only shows the areas Mario is passing through. I do think it's still smaller than the rest of Dinosaur Land though.
Also, Dinosaur Land is likely to the north. In Super Mario Advance 2's intro cutscene, Mario, Luigi, and Peach arrive to the area via hot air balloon, and they drift in from the southwest. Meaning Dinosaur Land is likely to the Northeast of the Mushroom Kingdom.
It's possible that Dinosaur Land is even part of the Cascade Kingdom, due to its similar geography of high cliffs and waterfalls, and it's _also_ to the Northeast.
Finally, Ravens also live on Lavalava Island from Paper Mario 64. However, it's likely the ravens moved there from Yoshi's island, as the leader, Raphael the Raven, is the same one that Kamek transformed back in the original. Raphael must've led a group of ravens to Lavalava, where they settled in and lived peacefully in the Jade Jungle.
I don't think Odyssey's map is really all that messed up size-wise. The Mushroom Kingdom appears small... _relatively._ But we don't know how large the kingdom is in reality. It's absolutely possible that all the mushroom Kingdom games we've played all exist on that "small" landmass. The areas we visit in Odyssey are very small portions of what are massive landmasses. This would explain why you can't see archipelagos like Dinosaur Land, the Sunshine Isles, etc etc. They're too small to be realistically seen from the world map.
And it's possible that the kingdoms don't even cover the entirety of those landmasses either. For all we know, the Sand Kingdom might just be the top left peninsula of that region, and the rest could be smaller kingdoms.
Mario stumbling upon a pipe post-Mario Bros is actually supported by an official Super Mario Maker level called "Did somebody call the plumber?"
The level begins with the bros in the city, getting a phone call. Then it goes underground to a recreation of the stage from Mario Bros. Then you explore the rest of the sewer and come across a warp pipe to the Mushroom Kingdom. This definitely implies that the bros got to the Mushroom Kingdom from following Bowser's minions in the sewers.
The Advance version of Mario Bros, found in most Mario games on the GBA, also has levels featuring Bowser, so I think it's pretty safe to say that they eventually end up in the Mushroom Kingdom. I like to headcanon that after Bowser took over in SMB1, Kamek saw the bros in his crystal ball, and Bowser sent his minions through the warp zone to stop them. Unfortunately for Bowser, those minions are exactly what led the bros to the Mushroom Kingdom to stop him.
    (continued in replies)

Including Banjo and Conker definitely complicates things a lot. Aside from the fact that Banjo and Conker operate on entirely different rules of the universe, Banjo Kazooie takes place in the real world, as there is a UK flag in one of the levels. Connections to the rare games have also seemingly been retconned anyway. I think if Banjo or Conker exist in Mario's world, it's not the exact same Banjo and Conker we see in their respective games, as confusing as that might be.
Herringway implies that Paper Mario is written after a _REAL_ adventure, so it's not just a made-up story. Goomboss was created by the Star Rod in PM64, and he appears in SM64DS, meaning PM64 must've happened. Paper Jam is a bit confusing, but a lot of the dialogue in the game goes out of its way to show how identical all the characters are to one another, even calling the world inside the book a "parallel world." The takeaway here is that all the Paper Mario locations exist in the real world and vice versa. The events of the Paper Games don't happen exactly the same in the real world, but they probably still happen. Mario folding up in TTYD is explicitly due to being cursed, and the office supplies may not appear in the real world versions (except Origami King, because they are only alive because of magic).
With that being said, there actually isn't that much to even map aside from TTYD's locations. The Origami King and Sticker Star both take place in the Mushroom Kingdom. Prisma Island is likely near to the Mushroom Kingdom, considering its population is only Toads. Rogueport and the surrounding areas are potentially within the mushroom kingdom, considering Peach says they stopped there while on vacation throughout the Mushroom Kingdom. Or it could be on a nearby landmass. One theory I like is that it's near the Sand Kingdom, considering Cortez is vaguely similar to the Tostarenans. Super Paper Mario takes place in other dimensions, so it doesn't matter.
Subcon is definitely a real dream realm. The events of SMB2 have been referenced a few times, such as in Mario Superstar Baseball, where Shy Guys are said to have worked for Wart in the past. SMB2's Japan-only sequel, BS Super Mario USA, has Mario & Co return to Subcon, this time NOT while they're dreaming. Subcon is likely a dream world very similar to the dream worlds seen in Dream Team.
The extended story in the manual of Super Mario Bros 2 also helps clear this up a bit. The reason Mario "wakes up," yet is still dreaming, is because Wart placed a curse on them. They aren't able to wake up while Wart is in control, so Mario "waking up" was him merely waking into another dream. At the end of the credits, Mario opens his eyes, indicating that the curse has been broken.
I think the SM64 worlds are definitely real places. I don't really care enough to argue though. Most of the areas don't even really have any substantial lore, so it's not a big deal. However, we do see Whomp's Fortress return in Super Mario Galaxy 2, meaning that even if the painting worlds weren't real before, they were made real by being painted.
The Sprixie Kingdom is definitely on Mario's planet. The pink otherworldy realm you travel through in the beginning is potentially the warp dimension. The Green Sprixie Princess built a clear warp pipe to escape Bowser, and ended up in the Mushroom Kingdom. This is why it appears in the middle of a pipe and is straight up broken (it was built hastily). So how did Bowser get there if the warp pipe wasn't there before?
At the end of the game, the Sprixies build a rocket that takes you directly upward of World 1, into outer space. You can see the planet down below, and the Comet Observatory is up there with you. After the credits of the main game, Mario returns to the Mushroom Kingdom, and you can see the Observatory in the sky. So for the Comet Observatory to be both above the Mushroom Kingdom AND the Sprixie Kingdom, it has to be on Mario's planet.
Lake Lapcat is also on Mario's planet. We see in the credits that Bowser's troops got there via airships. Unless Bowser Jr painted massive portals for the airships to fly through, they just got there normally. The warp that Mario falls through in the beginning of the game is likely the same technique that Jr created to teleport across Isle Delfino.
to add on to the moon rabbits thing, WarioWare has a race of rabbits called Space Bunnies.
So far, Brothership seems to take place in a different world. Mario & Luigi are sucked through a portal, Connie mentions trying to help them return to their "world."
However, Bowser is also there, so it's possible he just flew there, and it's on Mario's planet as well.

My headcanon is that all of the spinoffs are canon, and take place in a point in time where Bowser had lost so badly that there was peace for a while. Therefore, I personally think that they should count.
That being said, a lot of the locations from the spinoffs are in locations from the other games, and the ones that aren’t clearly that way could probably be stretched into either being other planets or stuff set for specifically for the events, so I don’t think it’s really a big deal to exclude them.

Mario's a popular celebrity with a ton of adventures, Mario Land is a theme park based around his adventures, not a Kingdom he "owns", at least, no more then Mickey Mouse owns Disney World. The various hyper-themed lands, all centered around a central big object, namely, a giant robotic Mario, feels very theme park esque, and we know from the Mario VS Donkey Kong games that Mario having toys of himself made is, like, a thing. I like this partly because it implies that Wario "taking over" Mario Land is actually more akin to someone renting the Cinderella Castle Suite at Disney World and then declaring they have CONQUERED DISNEYLAND FOR THEMSELVES, which...Feels kinda in-character for Wario.

It’s very likely the paintings in Peach’s castle existed prior to Bowser using the power stars to spread out and hide them inside, and paintings being portals to other real places has been doubled down on in the series.
Perhaps the paintings depict real places either ancient or far away and Bowser turned them into portals, which in turn created fake painting versions of the real places. Hence why the Big Bob-Omb seems to be different from King Bob-Omb and dies, and Big Boo (64) and King Boo have a similar thing going on.

King Bob-omb probably doesn't die, it's heavily implied by both the Paper, Sports, and Mario and Luigi games they Bob-ombs can blow up multiple times.

Could have just been made. Bowser is making an entire Galaxy. So he could have just made throwback galaxy as a literal throwback. Hence the name.
Because why is there a galaxy called throwback galaxy if it wasn’t intentional. It would be very weird if it just exists out in the ether like that with no explanation.

@@Eris1987 Odyssey paintings act entirely differently. You are traveling from one painting to another. 64 Has you going into a painting, appear from the sky, and come out of the painting after getting a star.
Hell if that's the case then Tick Tock Clock is some real life place despite it being affected by the position of the hands of the clock.
Throwback galaxy is just that. It's a literal throwback to 64 that Bowser has made.

8:54 ackschually, the story of Waluigi is, Wario didn't have a Tennis double for Mario Tennis (64), and after Yoshi laughed at him for this, he hired Jimmy Poppadopolos and gave him the attire. at first, he was just trying to fit his role, but after that first game, his whole life changed, embracing his role as Waluigi fully.
16:48 that wouldn't make much sense honestly. why would an island which mountains are in the middle of, with only beaches to connect to sea, erode into Pillars of rock keeping Dinosaur Land's ecosystems away from the sea?
26:59 him fighting office equipment could just be brushed off as whoever is writing Paper Mario starting to run out of ideas lol
like, they do add a lot in each "chapter" (to call them) so, them placing random office supplies would be like a DnD Dungeon Master making it's party fight something from their plushie collection because they need time to put something after it
27:22 most you could say about Wart is that he is part of many dreams, in many roles, since he only appeared in Subcon, Mario's Dream, and Koholint Island, The Windfish's dream.
also also Luigi's Mansions, which, to not put them way too close to each other could take after what you said, it's not necessarily a single big part of the Mushroom Kingdom that is infested with Ghosts, it could be small zones sprinkled everywhere, just to make it less obvious that Boos are involved in Luigi's problems.

I know you were joking with that first point, but to clarify-- that backstory was made up by someone on the internet. Waluigi's actual backstory was detailed on the Japanese website for Mario Tennis.
He saw Mario & Luigi rise to super stardom and said "I can do that too!"
So he trained and trained for a long period of time before he was ultimately accepted into the Mario Tennis tournament, where he teamed up with Wario.

DaNintendude addressed your first remark but I wanna mention the others.
We can't forget Mario and Donkey Kong have both fought sentient swords.
Luigi's Mansion takes place in Boo Woods and is implied to not be too far from Mario and Luigi's Home in the Grasslands as evident by the opening section of the game.
The reason it looks the way it does is because King Boo and his Boos did that to the area, and it's undone by the end of the game.

@@Eris1987 yeah, everywhere the Boo's attacked during the Mansion games (except for Dark Moon, that place was always like that) returned to normal forests, which I mentioned before, haunted areas are ghosts moving into normal ones. no ghosts? the area goes back to green.

There is a possibile easy explanation for dinosaur land. You play as Mario right? So you see the world as Mario sees it. It’s normal that as a baby your vision of the world is different than how the world is. Then after years when Mario returns finally sees the island on its original shape and dimensions.

Honestly I really like the idea that Wario comes from Sarasaland, it's a really original take and the thematic ties to Daisy's relationship to Peach solidify this one for me.
Also you're a legend for using the Brawl remix of Bramble Blast for the Kong Country transition slide.

Technically, Galaxy 1 and 2 do not exist in the exact same universe, as Galaxy 1 ends with Bowser creating a supernova that forces Rosalina to basically “big bang” the universe again.
Basically we can remove all the Galaxy 1 galaxies from our map, (keeping the observatory anyway), and use the galaxy maps from Galaxy 2

    • @Eris1987

The extent of what was changed was never explicitly stated and the most we see that was changed was the events of Galaxy and the Star Festival. In the end Rosalina said it's different but still not quite the same. This could also tie into Partner's in Time on how if you change the past you only change the present.
In addition these places are often seen again and again.
