I spent a lot of time playing Super Mario Kart as a child. And I think a lot of other people did too! I hope this video brings back some warm, nostalgic memories. If you enjoyed this documentary or learned something new, please give it a like or a share!
I just cried my eyes out... I'm almost 40 and and I remember going to Kmart and my dad buying this for me with the Super Nintendo... We didn't have a lot of money and he said the mom would be mad, but he did it anyway... My dad was Mexican and a field worker so I just think of all the hard work he did just to make me happy... These memories just rushed into me as I watched your video... It may sound so silly but thank you.
I hear you, when i watched the one about Super Mario World the same thing happened, i was hit with a bunch of memories of my older brother playing and me just hanging out with him in his room when i was little. i haven't thought about that IN YEARS!
I don't usually comment on these, but this one really hit me in the feels. I played Super Mario Kart with my Dad alot growing up, and even Mario Kart 8 with Him a few years ago. My Dad passed away this year from cancer, and watching this brought back all those fond memories of us playing this for hours on end back in the 90s. Excellent video as always Gaming Historian, and Thankyou.
My dad wasnt a gamer. But i used to leave my gameboy by the toilet. My best memories are of my father yelling from the bathroom asking me where to find certain items or how to beat a dungeon boss.
It's interesting that Miyamoto himself said he had little involvement in the development of the game and yet his suggestions ended up becoming key staples of both the series and the kart racing genre as a whole. The man truly is a visionary.
He really is. God given talent plus studying and working to improve his talent, he is literally a game design genius. He created so many features of video games that are so common place now. Love Miyamoto.
that's usually how it is, idea guys don't necessarily get too dirty, but they aren't just sitting back to be lazy. They're watching, observing, and while everyone else uses physically and a good bit of brain power to work on their sections, they see the big picture as it developes. What separates the good ones from the great ones is exactly what miyamoto shows, he doesn't constantly overseer or care about the non important (to him) smaller details. But the general ideas, and the small and miniscule details that DO matter, he sees, and he implements great things there. it's like a work of art in and of itself watching game development videos and seeing how shapes it like clay
When you are a specialist you try to defend every little step that you have taken. Sometimes the best directors of any type of projects are the ones that can tell when something that was achieved through hard work isn't enough or when something has to go to make the final product better, making their emotions about the effort aside for the better good
The quality of each episode of Gaming Historian has no comparison on TH-cam. Everything is of incredible quality: footage, material, narration. Gets me excited every time I see a notification
Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord. Come to Jesus Christ today Jesus Christ is only way to heaven Repent and follow him today seek his heart Jesus Christ can fill the emptiness he can fill the void Heaven and hell is real cone to the loving savior today Today is the day of salvation tomorrow might be to late come to the loving savior today John 3:16-21 16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God. Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus
I wish i could say the same. I started off with mario kart 64 then double dash, and didn’t get to try super mario kart until after mario kart wii came out. It just wasn’t fun for me. It felt like i was playing a flash version of the mario kart i knew lol.
Netflix should have a series dedicated to video game history done by TH-cam content creators. I know they did one that was 8 episodes but it only covers certain things about the industry.
I think this is the most well researched, choreographed, highest production value and most entertaining gaming show I’ve watched. Every episode you produce is a 10/10 quality. Though some subjects are more interesting than others you always put %110 into each episode and it shows.
Not to discredit the gaming historian, he is FANTASTIC and one of the best! But if you are interested in Sega Saturn at all you need to check out Pandamonium’s Saturn videos, especially his newer ones like NBA Jam. His videos are top notch, including interviews with developers, even on games that weren’t that popular.
This was a welcome episode for sure. I also actually like the obscure ones very much as well. Many subjects we already know so much about. But I love learning new details about stuff that I’ll never learn anywhere else.
I second that! This so so fun to watch, and what a trip down memory lane. I still have my SNES Mario Kart cartridge working and have Mario Kart Wii played to death. I love MK8 on Switch, the game just keeps getting better!
I love the production on these videos. The little figures posed at the end is fantastic. And the recaps on what people are doing with their lives really gives it that 80's era movie feel. One of these days I'm going to have to play Mario Kart.
Please do not ever stop making these videos. I cannot begin to express how wonderful they are and how much it makes me light up like a christmas tree when you release them. The research is always top notch and all the wonderful information you share with us is sure teach me so much that I had no idea about regarding some of my favorite games of all time! I sincerely thank you sir!
My mom and I used to play Super Mario Kart a lot back in the early '90s when she still played video games. Sadly she passed away in 2019, but memories of us playing this together are some of my fondest childhood memories of her.
I am such a huge fan of your channel. These videos combine two of my favorite childhood memories. Video games, and watching Documentaries with my late father. I especially like how you have a seperate VO for quotes then list who said them, something about your specific delivery is very nostalgic to me. Please accept my sincere and heartfelt thank you for what you do. I look forward to the next video.
I turned 12 years old the year that this game was released. My friends' and I spent many of hours playing it. Fast forward to today, I am currently 42 years old and play the newer versions of this classic franchise with my kids. 30 years and still going strong! Nintendo still has it's magic...
One of just a few channels that I will not only drop everything to watch the first time, but rewatch a few times. The quality of these documentaries are just unmatched.
One of my favorite all time video games. I still remember the Christmas that I got that game, my younger brother and I played it all day, completely forgot about our other Christmas gifts. We played that game for years and years, had some epic races and battles against each other. We're both in our 40's and still occasionally bring up that game in conversation. Good times.
In my opinion her work on SimCity for SNES is the most genius soundtrack work in video game history. It's just five simple songs but you have to and can easily listen to them over and over again for hours. It should drive a person mad but you just don't even think about it and just enjoy the pleasant tunes.
I didn't know the same person did Pilotwings, SimCity, and Mario Kart. Just as impressive as the quality is the diversity. They don't sound similar at all.
Unfortunately, many composers' work for video games are overshadowed, which probably led to many leaving the industry and doing their own thing. Not only did Soyo Oka do this, but many others like Daniel Masson (Donald Duck Goin Quackers PC version) did the same. So i don't think Soyo Oka will ever go back to Nintendo sadly.
It wasn't just families this game brought together. My freshman year of college, I brought it with me and it became an instant hit where our entire floor would get together in my room to play SMK tournaments and what not. This video brought back some very good memories and filled in a lot of things I didn't know.. Thanks!
The closest we have to an actually hard Rainbow Road is Mario Kart Wii in 2nd and ironically enough Super Circuit (those damned thunderclouds and bounce pads...)in 3rd. Super Mario Kart will always have the hardest Rainbow Road.
I still have ptsd from that Rainbow Road. I don't know how many times I've had all the lives, in 1st place, 150cc class, only to lose every single one. You had to be almost perfect. And a little bit lucky.
I'm glad you covered the music, it's one of the most memorable things about SMK imo. Nintendo has always been strong on the musical front. Many talented composers.
Not to mention the sound & music technology of the Super Famicom / Super NES was an undeniable leap ahead of the previous Nintendo console gen AND everything the competition had @ the time. Even tho Genesis titles like Sonic & Streets Of Rage were beautiful examples of how far talented music composers & skilled programmers could push "chip tune" (synth-based) hardware, the newer audio tech inside the Super Nintendo consoles was like an entire symphonic orchestra / rock ensemble packed into the system, just begging for game devs to unleash & take full advantage of. For comparison, try listening to the music soundtracks of late-1980s / 1990s PC games running on systems equipped w/ Adlib, Soundblaster Pro or Soundblaster 16 audio cards ... then contrast that to the music capability of wavetable (sample-based) sound cards such as the Soundblaster AWE32/64 or the Roland series (among various others, of course). Even to the untrained ear, the difference between the prev "chip tune" gen & the wavetable- / soundfont-style next-gen music tech is IMO as clear as night & day ... which only further cemented the Super Nintendo consoles as a new, market-dominant platform for the home gaming scene.
My parents bought me and brother this game when we were children. My Father played with us on this game for hours. We got more than our money’s worth and the memories are absolutely priceless. My Father passed away over a year ago and this video brought it all back for me, our time with him. Thank you for this video.
They did sabotage close to all my post in 4 years in a row by swapping it out with something without any effect and by mixing everything with antiandrogen and often with trans medicine and anti psychotic medicine. if my post never was sabotaged and i i never went to mental asylum and i already made about 97-99% of music in the radio in denmark in 2019, 2020, 2021 & 2022 and even all songs in 2019 would been the only very good songs with singing and rapping in 2019 and i would already been 1050-1800 times better than 100% of all singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2019 and i would always used 5.5-15 hours per day with making songs & rapping and singing & i never had any days off without practicing and since i would been famous in 2019 and i could had used 100 more memory and brain supplements and without all of it was with antiandrogen, trans medicine and anti psychotic medicine and without it would be swapped out with supplements without any effect for the memory and the brain and i could also used 30 more drugs for singing and rapping and i would only got super much more catchy with singing and rapping for every single week / per week for over 30 years in the future and I WOULD Only got super much better in 100s of different ways with singing and rapping for every single week / per week over 30 years in a row and i never had any days off because i only have all those breaks because my post was sabotaged and i have no money only because my post always was sabotaged and i would by 100%guarantee already been 5000 to 8200 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2020 and over 45000 times better rapper than 100% of all other rappers from 100% of countries in the world combined in the end of 2020 & i would by 100 guarantee already have 50-108 more listenings to singing songs in 2020 more than justin Biebers music have in total and 50-88 more listenings to my rap songs in 2020 more than eminems music have in total and i would earn 55-200 billion danish kroner per month since 2021 and i would had made 30-65 albums per month since 2021 and today i would been about 128000 times better rapper than 100% of all countries in the world combined and today i would been about 17500 times better than 100% of all other singers in the world combined at making music/songs by singing and i would by 100 guarantee get 44000-54500more listenings to my music in 1 year in the future more than justin Biebers Music have in total and 87000-107000more listenings to my music in 2 years more than justin Biebers music have in total and my rap songs would been 1 octillion 35 octillion times better than 99,99994% of all others rap songs in the world and all singing songs would been 1 octillion to35 octillion times better than 99,999% of all others singing songs in the world. If they didnt put me to mental asylum in december in 2021 and i made 25-35 music videos per month in 2022 and i would already been more or close to as famous as Lukas Graham in January in 2022 and i used many hours per day with singing and rapping in all of 2022 and i would already made 97-99% of music in the radio in Denmark in 8-9 months in a row and i would already had earned 28 billion to 79 billion Danish kroner and i would made 20-40 songs per day the last 3-4 months in a row and all my songs in 2022 would been the only very good songs in the world and about everyone would agree and everyone would know in 2022 why all other singers and rappers is bad at making songs and everyone would agree that all other singers and rappers in the world is all making noise in general instead of music and i would been 2000-3000 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making music/songs by singing in 2022 on less than 1 year of singing practice and i would by 100% guarantee get 230-378 more listenings to my music in 1 to 2 years in the future more than Justin Biebers music have in total, if they didnt put me to mental asylum in 2021&2022. I never had mental illness in my life and i have to get 500-800 billion Danish kroner in compensation for being in mental asylum in 2021&2022 and i have to get 400-600 billion Danish kroner in compensation for being in mental asylum in 2019. I was about 40000 times better rapper and then they stop my constantly daydreams by 100% and with my constantly daydreams and i got super ultra mega extremely unbelievable lightning quickly better with rapping and singing aswell and then since i was about 19 years and 4 months old by often giving me anti psychotic medicine with injections while i slept over many years in a row and my daydreams was always stopped by 100% because they never stopped to keep give me anti psychotic medicine with injections while i slept. With my constantly daydreams and i got a better rapper for every minute i was awake, i also used my daydreams to always make great rhymes everytime i was walking outside and i also used my daydreams super much on same time with everytime i freestyle rap. So it was kind of what i daydreamed, that i freestyle rapped. If they didnt start to give me anti psychotic medicine and i would been 83000-93000 times better rapper than all other rappers in the world combined before i would been 20 years old and i was always going to be a singer and it was always the plan to start practice singing alot in the future, so when i would been famous with rap and i would started to practice singing alot and with my constantly daydreams and i would improve super ultra extremely unbelievable lightning quickly with singing and rapping and because of my constantly daydreams and i would used over 35 more time with singing and rapping, it was only because they stop my daydreams by often giving me anti psychotic medicine, being the reason why i didnt freestyle rap that much and i would made 97-99% of music in the radio in Denmark in 8.3-9.3 months in a row and all my songs would been the only very good songs in the history of the world and since i would been famous and i could used better weed and alot of other drugs for singing and rapping and in 2016 and i would been about 12000 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would been about 15000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2016 and i would already have 6000-10000 more listenings to my songs in 2016 more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would make high to very high % of music in the radio in Denmark in 2016 and over 36 more years in a row and high to very high % of music in the radio in all countries in the world in 2016 and over 36 more years in a row and i would have 50000-65000more listenings to my music in 2017 more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would had 123000-149000more listenings to my songs in 2018 more than justin Biebers music have in total and in 2018 and i would been about 21000 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and about 200000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2018 aswell..in 2020 and i would been about 33500 times better than all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would been about 275000-300000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2020 and i would have 370000-530000 more listenings to my music in 2020 more than justin Biebers music have in total, in 2021 and i would had 520000-750000 more listenings to my music more than justin Biebers music have in total and i would been about 41000 times better than 100% of all other singers from 100% of countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing in 2021 and about 320000-350000 times better rapper than all other rappers from all countries in the world combined in 2021 and today i would been about 350000-394000 times better rapper than 100% of all other rappers in the world combined and today i would been about 46500 times better than 100% of all other singers from all countries in the world combined at making songs/music by singing and i would by 100% guarantee get4.3-5.5 million more listenings to rap songs during my life more than Eminems music have in total and i would by 100% guarantee get 6.3 million to 8.5 million more listenings to singing songs during my life more than justin Biebers music have in total and my songs was so fantastic and famous that close to all the songs would been famous in 1000s of octillion of years in the future and almost 100% of all of my rap songs would been 1.5 octillion to 40 octillion times better than 99,99995% of all other peoples rap songs and my singing songs would been 1.5 octillion to 40 octillion times better than 99,9999% of all others singing songs. i started to smoke cigarettes again in mental asylum in 2019 & when my post wasn't sabotaged anymore / when my testosterone was high and i stop to smoke cigarettes and heal my voice chord and start to smoke cigarettes and even though they never stopped to sabotage my post and i stopped to smoke cigarettes in december in 2021 and starting with singing practice alot in january in 2022 and i would already made about 25rap music videos in january in 2022 that i recorded myself with beats i would buy online and i got my dad to video record me and by using a video camera stand and it would quickly get a me good record deal and i would already made 97-99%of music in the radio in denmark in 8-9 months in a row and i would already hyad earned30 billion to 80 billion danish kroner and i would by 100% guarantee get 230-378 more listenings to my music in 1-2 years in the future more than justin biebers music have in total
The production, research, visual and storytelling components of this video are incredible! Norm outdid himself once again. This was a treat after a long work day.
This game is my childhood. It was the first game I could beat my older sister and grew my love for gaming. I'm glad you made it a documentary on it with the amazing quality you guys put behind it.
That’s funny, this was my favorite memory with my sister too. We used to make it high-stakes and the loser would have a cup of water poured on their bed before sleeping 😅
This game was PURE CHARM and fun. At the time the graphics were amazing. Honestly I still love the jagged mode 7 sprites- they're such a vibe. The soundtrack is dripping in that weird SNES sound chip reverb and crazy synthy brass pads with cool vibrato, etc. It was all just awesome!
Thank you, Norm for bringing in some of my family’s home video footage of Super Mario Kart at 43:37 - I knew you would implement it well. Incredible work, as always man. Loved this!
Seeing that was so cool and when he mentioned how parents competed with their kids it brought a tear to my eye remembering playing this with my dad back in the day. I'll treasure that memory for the rest of my life.
I got into a biking accident and shattered by collarbone and broke my ribs and was laid up for months while I healed...I played Mario Kart 8 practically everyday and it never got tired or boring. That's really saying something about a video game! The greatest game franchise of all time in my opinion.
@@ScotsmanGamer If you like a sense of speed in your racing game then F-Zero is for you, if you like a silly, go-kart mascot racer then Mario Kart is your jam.
I totally forgot about how many hours I poured into this game and how it just let the worries of my troubled household melt away. Literally magic. May have even shed a tear or two watching this.
Everytime I watch a video of this man, I can feel his love and soul for this channel. Thank you for all the hard work and passion you put into these videos. The only major gripe I have with them.. is that they end. But everytime I see a notification from your channel it's like Christmas.
This is beautiful. It's like time traveling back to the past. I remember the commercials on tv, the hype, the magazines on store shelves, and even friends talking about it. This is so informative and it gives a broder sense and scope of what went into the development of this game. Thank you for the wonderful memories you've conjured up with this documentary. Excellent job.
It's a cold, greyish day here in Poland, could it be anything better than seeing there is a new video at the gaming historian channel? I don't think so. Thank you very much for one another wonderful piece of gaming history, I'm truly amazed by the quality of content you create. In the early 00' i used to play very heavily that game on the emulator, i loved it with my entire heart. The power of that game is in the gameplay which allows weak players win, it's not about racing skills it's about great comebacks and having fun together
The year 1992, my family got a SNES for Christmas. It obviously came with Super Mario World, but when we got home with our new system, my Dad came into the living room, turned off the system and said we were done playing Mario tonight, then he inserted a strange new cartridge into the SNES. That cartridge was Super Mario Kart. We could watch him play, but not play it ourselves that night. The next day, we were allowed to jump in to play the game. It was legendary. We would spend hours racing and battling in the game. I’ve played most, not all of the Mario Kart series. It’s a significant series to me.❤
Another brilliant documentary from the absolute goat of long-form video game docs. I love these videos so much, and this one really hit the nostalgia bone hard, even though I never owned a SNES personally and didn't play Super Mario Kart much as a kid. Getting a look at the developers and hearing their stories of how the games we know and love came to be is such a treat, and you always present it in the most entertaining way possible, while touching our hearts in the process.
This video was timed perfectly. Every year around the holidays, my family spend a ton of time playing Super Mario Kart, its basically a Holiday tradition. I wasnt even born in the era of the Super Nintendo, but that was the console I grew up playing, and as a family, we would have Mario Kart tournaments from time to time, but nowadays thats reserved for Christmas. Tl;dr Im a baby boomer thats got a lotta nostalgia with this classic.
As someone who has enjoyed the Mario Kart series since a young age, and has been inspired to make a feature-length documentary on the DS version's competitive scene, I cannot stress enough how well made this is. One of the best productions I've seen in a very, very long time. Well done @GamingHistorian.
This game is still played competitively to this day, with a world champsionship taking place each year in the Netherlands. Sami Cetin, who's been playing since the 90's won this years tournament, and it has a dedicated player base that have pushed the game to its absolute limites, including altering the hardware so they can set faster times.
This documentary hits us in very different forms. Nostalgia, memories, childhood, friends, family and a time that you never come back again. What a great piece of information, emotions and art. Thanks for that sir. Unforgettable ride indeed. Kudos!!
Couldn't imagine a better Documentary on Mario Kart than this! It's like you were born to make this Documentary, from the narration, to the Editing, down to the extra voice's helping out with dialogue. Truely an inspiring level of creativeness making this Documentary feel AAA yet retaining an Indie feel simultaneously. Bravo.
Even after 30 years it is still my favorite cart racer of all time. Even long after the N64 and Gamecube came out we still played it. It was one of only a couple games we could ever get my mom to play.
I try to spread the word about this guy best I can. I can't believe he hasn't even reached a million. Such a great story teller and the editing and the art. If you watch this guy and you've watched most of his videos spread the word. This guy deserves it
My mom and I used to play this version all the time when I was little. Then as a teenager it was quite common place to wake up to my mom and dad bickering in the living room over the wii version and hearing my dad's thunderous laugh. This game is deeply inprinted into my family and generated so many great memories. Honestly a little tear jerking. Especially because time went on, I moved out, they got divorced, my mom went down a really destructive path and my dad and I fell out. I haven't spoken much to either over the last 7 or 8 years ..though thankfully we have been working on that a little more lately. Your videos have a way of getting me emotional in the oddest of ways man. Your talented.
Norm, you've really been knocking it out of the park with these long-form documentary type videos lately. This and Super Mario World both choked me up at the end. I can't even explain why, they're just so touching. Fantastic work, man!
I have enjoyed all of your content for years now, but these long form Documentary "Story of" videos are absolutely next level. I'd love for you to do LOADS more of these. I cannot even begin to imagine how much work goes into these, so well researched and full of information. Keep up the good work sir. Your videos always put a massive smile on my face.
Born in 87. I believe I grew up throughout the course of the greatest eras of video gaming ever. 8-bit NES 16 bit super Nintendo and 64-bit N64 to cap it off. I had an incredible childhood with both Mario karts for SNES and N64. Memories I wouldn't trade for anything.
So glad that I was in just in the right spot to experience this game as one should. Thanks for letting me revisit this nice part of my childhood with this beautiful documentary.
Mario Kart DS will always hold a place in my heart as the game that I was able to enjoy with friends and classmates. I will always have respect for this game and its developers for getting things started with the Mario Kart franchise.
I think me and a friend actually spent an entire night racing each other in Super Mario Kart and only noticed how much time we'd spent doing it when the sun rose the next morning.
The main thing I love about these older games is you can just feel the love and passion that these creators had for their games, especially the older Nintendo games. Nowadays games just seem so soulless
@@maplemiles3381 seriously... They might take a lot longer than they used to, but most first party, Nintendo-developed games have all the love and care that the old software did. I can think of some things that lost their magic, like the switch in general is good but doesn't have the Nintendo charm the Wii/u did, but you can count on their games to be fun first.
I am so glad we have a historian for this media. Not just somebody calling themselves a historian but an actual vetted source we can all trust. Anyone can make a TH-cam video using regurgitated info from other videos and unconfirmed internet sources. It's good to see you cite everything that goes in writing history. It must be so useful that you read, write, and, speak many languages including Japanese. Thank you Mr. Historian
Great new video! I rented this so many times as a kid, such good memories. I know you are probably gonna have to start making shorts at some point but please don’t stop making these long form ones too. Nothing gets me more excited to see YOU talk about my childhood. Thank you friend ❤
Played the heck out of this game back in '93 and '94. Our neighbors (both their kids & adults) would frequently come over and we would all play SMK tournaments and battle mode. I can remember begging my mom to let me finish "just one more race" before bed time. This game absolutely nailed the social aspect like the designers set out to do, and it absolutely belongs in videogame history.
This video truly Pulled at my heartstrings and brought me to tears. I grew up in an abusive home with drug addicted parents, and Mario kart was an escape for me as a nine year old kid. I remember endless hours of playing with my siblings and especially by myself on Koopa Beach. The music was relaxing and the scenery on that level was the perfect getaway in my mind to escape the horrible realities at home. thank you for your incredible research an honor that you gave the developers in this video truly well done.❤
Beautiful. I never played it growing up. But just today, I work nights and my 6 year old had to stay home from school sick. I told him I needed a quick nap, and he played Mario Kart (favorite game) on Switch and let me nap for a bit. Its what we do on family night every friday.
I cannot deny that in spite of the many improvements and advancements the franchise has seen thanks mainly to online gameplay: I have such a soft spot for the original. The colorful graphics, nostalgic soundtrack and overall fun factor still hold up for me!
These videos must be a lot of hard work but it’s nice how you have fun making them! The original MarioKart is always a blast to revisit! Keep up the awesome job on these videos!! I absolutely love them! 👍
Mario games from the SNES era are one the most memorable to me, probably because of the beautiful art in the booklets and boxes. But also due to their systems and how much fun they were to play. Love these episodes!!
My best friend and I racked up god knows how many hours on this cartridge. It was always our go-to if we didn’t know what to play. We’d make up our own challenges and get after it. Learning the history of the game here - I’m thankful the team in Japan stuck with it. An iconic game that changed the future of gaming!
Few games I've been as obsessed with as with this game. I think we could feel we were playing something extraordinary back then, I definitely could, and its music, loved it to bits. This documentary brought lots of awesome memories. So glad the love for this game is so universal, and everlasting.
Your videos just give me so much comfort. Hard to explain. High quality of course but it's also the nostalgia factor. The world sucks so bad now and these videos just help me temporary escape to when live was good and there was so much optimism.
This is golden. I haven't even watched it but I know it's bound to be good. Gaming historian doesn't disappoint especially with the longer documentaries
I wish you'd make one of those for more niche, awesome games, like Contra: Hard Corps or The Adventures of Batman and Robin on the SEGA Genesis. The latter had a fascinating development, some of its artists were basically teenagers... Its music was produced by the same guy who'd go on to make the music for the Hitman trilogy... It'd make a great episode.
You're just bizarrely masterful at this medium. Even if the sort of content you're work focused on wasn't of interest to me, I would still enjoy watching it. The tone and production is just so good.
The controls for SMK are insanely good for that era and that hardware. It was so fun to play and you could actually learn technique to get better and better
Another home run Gaming Historian! Absolutely love this franchise and am happy to have lived through all of it. Thank you for bringing back some happy memories!
I absolutely love this game. The entire concept was so well put together and executed. Take racers from Nintendo IP and put them in a game. Give them different strengths and weaknesses so that no driver was too OP. You had to decide what you wanted in your driver aside from just who your favorite character was. So many amazing tracks and shortcuts to find. And Rainbow Road...
Congratulations on another amazing video. It may be months between each new release of a video, but you always go above and beyond which makes the watch after the wait that much sweeter. Can’t wait to watch what the next lesson in the history of video games from one & only Gaming Historian.
I thought we got another episode quickily after the one on Super Mario World, then I realized 6 months have passed, time sure does fly Also, nice detail that you used assets from the gigaleak again to show the development more in-depth!
I wish Nintendo saw the value in releasing old dev builds for these 30 year old games. So much about the development process of these historic games will be lost if these old builds end up forgotten about on a dusty Nintendo hard drive somewhere.
Incredible quality. I love that you put your talent to use making videos about the stuff of my childhood. It's not just a video, you really manage to capture even the feeling of those times.
These videos on your channel are truly incredible. Thank you for sharing with us all of your time, labor, and passion! I am in awe of the amount of effort you put into each of these.
This was fantastic, thank you GH! A near-perfect game but which still completely holds up. The N64 version is probably my favourite in the series but the handling and some of the course design in the original is unparalleled. It was really interesting seeing how the game progressed. I can’t imagine the game without items, I’m glad they took that option out. The items being the unpredictability, which is a huge part of the fun!
I was 10 years old in 1992 and this game was an absolute phenomenon and a blast to play, especially with friends. Honestly it's still fun to play, graphics have advanced since then but it's a fantastically balanced game that has just enough going on to make it interesting without being overwhelming. Pound for pound one of the greatest of all time.
Absolutely one of my favorite games of all-time!! As someone who's always had an appreciation for music in video games super Mario karts sound track was timeless and perfect!
Just wanted to finally leave a comment on one of these and tell you what an incredible job you do with these, man. I used to think Gametrailers/Easy Allies did the best retrospectives, but you've surpassed even them. I know how much work and research goes into something like this and I appreciate it; I watch them so often before bed.
If you like these kind of videos, I’d highly recommend you check out GTV Japan here on TH-cam if you haven’t already. His video game retrospectives are top notch. I’d argue just as good as Gaming Historian. I love that he includes tv show style bumpers and retro video game ads related to the topic he’s discussing.
It was so great to meet you and see a sneak peek of your research for Mario Kart at Retropalooza in Dallas! Can't wait to watch this tonight. Thank you for your amazing videos. Have a Merry Christmas, Norm!
Didn't think I'd get emotional watching a longform TH-cam documentary about Super Mario Kart, but that music really takes me back, man. Thanks for this.
As soon as this popped up on my notifications bar, I was hyped. Finally home after a dinner out with friends and can't wait to get stuck into this. My only wish is that you could put out more of these amazing documentaries at a faster rate. But I realize that quality over quantity is far better. I regularly rewatch your documentaries. Particularly when I'm feeling a bit down or fed up with other things life throws at us, your documentaries transport me to a happy place. Thanks Norman!
Looking back, I was blessed that my parents bought us a SNES in 1992, and eventually Super Mario Kart. I spent hours and hours playing this game with family and friends, so much so that the songs are ingrained into my brain. I would love to know the history behind the box art and the font design.
This game is epic. This game helped the gaming industry in such a good way. I never could play it well. It wasn't until the 64 generations of 3D games that I could get into kart racers. That being said I am happy to learn of its past.
That was an hour long documentary with research, structure and narration exceeding all game history docs I've seen on Netflix etc. 👏 I look forward to watch more of your videos with my son.
I spent a lot of time playing Super Mario Kart as a child. And I think a lot of other people did too! I hope this video brings back some warm, nostalgic memories. If you enjoyed this documentary or learned something new, please give it a like or a share!
MK is OK, but Crash Team Racing is 💪🏻🤘🏻👍🏻🔥🏎️💤
@@stuporman This video isn’t about CTR, you’re in the wrong video, watch another video on that game.
@@stuporman I prefer Mariokart.
Got to see your abridged presentation on this video at Portland Retro
I loved this game too!!
my favorite part was trying to beat the fastest time with the ghost car in time trials.
@@origintrackz5235 yeah it's crazy what is still stored in there just waiting for the proper trigger
Awesome story. ❤
I have a common reaction to a lot of these old video game documentaries.
Loving parents are great! 40 is around the corner for me too. Love that game
I'm so sorry for your loss. It's amazing that you can create so many memories with video games.
My dad wasnt a gamer. But i used to leave my gameboy by the toilet. My best memories are of my father yelling from the bathroom asking me where to find certain items or how to beat a dungeon boss.
R.I.P Dad. I'm sorry for your loss.
R.I.P sorry for your loss
I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my father unexpectedly four months ago. I feel you.
Sometimes the best directors of any type of projects are the ones that can tell when something that was achieved through hard work isn't enough or when something has to go to make the final product better, making their emotions about the effort aside for the better good
Nobody does a better job than Gaming Historian. Congrats on another fantastic documentary!
You are too kind, thank you for the support!
The quality of each episode of Gaming Historian has no comparison on TH-cam. Everything is of incredible quality: footage, material, narration. Gets me excited every time I see a notification
Gaming historian and GTV is the best game history channels 👍
Agreed, the quality is top notch!
All the custom footage and research is really crazy when I sit and take in how much there is even in a few seconds. Next level content for real

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

I wish i could say the same. I started off with mario kart 64 then double dash, and didn’t get to try super mario kart until after mario kart wii came out. It just wasn’t fun for me. It felt like i was playing a flash version of the mario kart i knew lol.
If old school / quality History Channel was still a thing, you'd deserve your own show. Every documentary you do hits me right in the nostalgia feels.
Netflix should have a series dedicated to video game history done by TH-cam content creators. I know they did one that was 8 episodes but it only covers certain things about the industry.
@@sidearmsalpha Not Netflix; Hulu, MAX or Disney + Since they did to be next to the shows form The Hisorty Channel, Nat Geo, or The Dioscvery Channel.
But I love learning new details about stuff that I’ll never learn anywhere else.
oh stop you creepy little simp
I second that! This so so fun to watch, and what a trip down memory lane. I still have my SNES Mario Kart cartridge working and have Mario Kart Wii played to death. I love MK8 on Switch, the game just keeps getting better!
Just a shame his voice is so bland
I love the production on these videos. The little figures posed at the end is fantastic. And the recaps on what people are doing with their lives really gives it that 80's era movie feel. One of these days I'm going to have to play Mario Kart.
Thank you! I always like a good recap at the end of movies / documentaries
Shits the tits! 🙌🏻
What? You've never played Mario kart? You apparently had the boringest childhood ever
Yeah I love the "what are they up to now?" sections. It's just something unique that most other videos doing retrospectives or documentaries don't do.

I turned 12 years old the year that this game was released. My friends' and I spent many of hours playing it. Fast forward to today, I am currently 42 years old and play the newer versions of this classic franchise with my kids. 30 years and still going strong! Nintendo still has it's magic...
Me and my boys play MK8 on switch weekly. Hits biggest with them when I say I will after work 😆
They never expect it

One of my favorite all time video games. I still remember the Christmas that I got that game, my younger brother and I played it all day, completely forgot about our other Christmas gifts. We played that game for years and years, had some epic races and battles against each other. We're both in our 40's and still occasionally bring up that game in conversation. Good times.
One of my biggest video game wishes was that Soyo Oka had continued writing music. She's such an underrated composer.
I don’t think she retired. Nintendo needs to bring her back for a project.
YOU'RE an underrated composer...
Thanks!
To this day, my favourite game in the series. The different character specs, the skill ceiling and the most sadistic Rainbow Road ever.
W
The closest we have to an actually hard Rainbow Road is Mario Kart Wii in 2nd and ironically enough Super Circuit (those damned thunderclouds and bounce pads...)in 3rd. Super Mario Kart will always have the hardest Rainbow Road.
@@MC-bo6ql Always loved the super circuit rainbow road, maybe my favorite one
I still have ptsd from that Rainbow Road. I don't know how many times I've had all the lives, in 1st place, 150cc class, only to lose every single one. You had to be almost perfect. And a little bit lucky.
One of my top 3 games of all time. I was obsessed by SMK.
I'm glad you covered the music, it's one of the most memorable things about SMK imo. Nintendo has always been strong on the musical front. Many talented composers.
Koopa Beach!
Speaking of which, that very end music at the end of the video, it is on the tip of my memory, but where is it from?
8-bit stereo warps. Nothing like it.
My parents bought me and brother this game when we were children. My Father played with us on this game for hours. We got more than our money’s worth and the memories are absolutely priceless. My Father passed away over a year ago and this video brought it all back for me, our time with him.
Thank you for this video.

Same situation but with my older brother, he hated that I could beat him. That music also brings back some feels
Appreciate the Soyo Oka love. Her contribution was huge.
She gets a kiss
Makes sense that she did Pilot Wings and Sim City, also excellent soundtracks. She was simply amazing at her work.
She's awesome
Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication. It really comes through in the high quality of your videos!
Thank you very much! I know they take some time, but I always think it is worth it.
Big fan of your stuff, Tyler!
@@ViolentDetour my dad and I played hours of battle mode :)
I got into a biking accident and shattered by collarbone and broke my ribs and was laid up for months while I healed...I played Mario Kart 8 practically everyday and it never got tired or boring. That's really saying something about a video game! The greatest game franchise of all time in my opinion.
i agree
Agreed
For over 30 years, this is the best SNES racing game that was ahead of its time. Amazing Documentary Norman.
Not F-Zero?
@@MrRedFoxorMrelzorrorojo If F-Zreo was bland in comparison
One of the best racing games. Skill matters, but.. 🍀
@@ScotsmanGamer If you like a sense of speed in your racing game then F-Zero is for you, if you like a silly, go-kart mascot racer then Mario Kart is your jam.
As someone who didn't grow up with either F-Zero or Super Mario Kart, I think F-Zero holds up better. Super Mario Kart is still fun though.
It’s difficult to overstate how high quality your videos are
Gaming Historian strikes again. Always top-notch research, production value, presentation and charm. And always above and beyond…. thank you Norm!
This feels like the Avengers of "I love all your work!!" commenter one-liners
@@lrgogo1517 thanks lol
It’s a significant series to me.❤
That’s so wholesome. I can only imagine gaming experiences like that
Another brilliant documentary from the absolute goat of long-form video game docs.
I can't stop crying. This game had such a big impact on my family playing together.
Name of the game?

Over a game?! You need to re-evaluate your life.
@@dennisneo1608 It was the only game my parents played and my mom just passed away
I asked my Discord server for Super Mario Kart stories and I got many similar to yours. It really is a special game that brought people together!
If you weren't born during this era, you wouldn't be a baby boomer. You'd either be a millenial or gen z.

@@JoshuaJacobs83 GenX (barely) here - Loved this game as a teen myself. :D
It's been great watching you become a full fledged documentarian. Your style of story telling is truly transfixing. Can't wait for the next one.
Always a nice surprise when I get the notification of a new Gaming Historian episode. These belong on PBS.
Right between This Old House and Antiques Roadshow
I try to spread the word about this guy best I can. I can't believe he hasn't even reached a million. Such a great story teller and the editing and the art. If you watch this guy and you've watched most of his videos spread the word. This guy deserves it
it's growing organically, it'll get there. :)
not everybody is a nerd like you
Ive known him for a few years. Love his work.
Fr he puts so much work and effort in these videos
He doesn't deserve a million views on this video. All he and DYKG ever talks about is nintendo games.
Me also my friend 😊🤗 Dec 12th 1987 and I love this game and many others on the SNES
Same. Also spending Friday nights at the arcade in the mall with my older brother. Best times of my childhood.
Especially due to online and local multiplayer. It was the first time i experienced that on a mark kart game.
Thank you so much for allowing me to contribute to this project! I am absolutely thrilled with how this video turned out! 💚

I think me and a friend actually spent an entire night racing each other in Super Mario Kart and only noticed how much time we'd spent doing it when the sun rose the next morning.
Gamers!
That sounds like a lovely memory..
The main thing I love about these older games is you can just feel the love and passion that these creators had for their games, especially the older Nintendo games. Nowadays games just seem so soulless
I know where your coming from. Try The Last Of Us Part 1 if you can. You can feel the passion from the creators of that game from the first second.
Nintendo games now a days are not soulless splatoon 3 ring a bell
@@maplemiles3381 seriously... They might take a lot longer than they used to, but most first party, Nintendo-developed games have all the love and care that the old software did. I can think of some things that lost their magic, like the switch in general is good but doesn't have the Nintendo charm the Wii/u did, but you can count on their games to be fun first.
Mario Odyssey is full of soul. It's just some games are forgettable these days.
Thankfully that passion is still felt in a lot of modern Nintendo games. The indie market as well. It is rare otherwise...
I didn't think you could spread this much quality across an hour long video but you did it!
I still have my copy of Mario Kart from when I was a kid. I can't even come close as an adult to beating my time trials now.

Beautiful. I never played it growing up. But just today, I work nights and my 6 year old had to stay home from school sick. I told him I needed a quick nap, and he played Mario Kart (favorite game) on Switch and let me nap for a bit. Its what we do on family night every friday.
I'm sorry you had to go through this at such a young age!
My childhood memories with this remarkable game and its N64 sequel are irreplaceable
I cannot deny that in spite of the many improvements and advancements the franchise has seen thanks mainly to online gameplay: I have such a soft spot for the original.
The colorful graphics, nostalgic soundtrack and overall fun factor still hold up for me!
It is still very fun! I had a blast capturing footage. It's also way more difficult than I remember.
SMK still has the best, tightest controls of any game in the series
These videos must be a lot of hard work but it’s nice how you have fun making them!
The original MarioKart is always a blast to revisit!
Keep up the awesome job on these videos!! I absolutely love them! 👍
The original is the best - the controls, the lack of chaotic visual clutter.
Mario games from the SNES era are one the most memorable to me, probably because of the beautiful art in the booklets and boxes. But also due to their systems and how much fun they were to play.
Love these episodes!!
I love hearing these stories of how Nintendo games were developed. I'm always blown away by how smart and thoughtful these guys were
I've only recently come across your channel. This video and the several others that I've seen, so far, are brilliant. Thank you for making them!

I used to love Rainbow Road, it was my favorite stage.
Every video is premium content on this channel! 👍🏻🇺🇲
lol how does he get all this info/footage? Awesome channel for when I'm in the mood.
It'd make a great episode.
hell yeah, B&R had insane graphics for an "old 16-bit machine". Genesis had it's own bag of tricks to stand up to SNES.
I mean, he did one for Rystar. He definitely does niche stuff.
Not saying it couldn't happen but does seem to lean more towards nintendo. I know both my nintendos and segas got a lot of use growing up.
I think this is his only job so he needs to make stuff people will watch like Mario kart or sonic
I'm open to covering just about any topic! Thanks for the suggestions
That F zero segment brought back so many memories. We had a good childhood in the 90s.
Congratulations on another amazing video. It may be months between each new release of a video, but you always go above and beyond which makes the watch after the wait that much sweeter. Can’t wait to watch what the next lesson in the history of video games from one & only Gaming Historian.
I thought we got another episode quickily after the one on Super Mario World, then I realized 6 months have passed, time sure does fly
Also, nice detail that you used assets from the gigaleak again to show the development more in-depth!
I appreciate that, it's definitely the vibe I aim for!

Particularly when I'm feeling a bit down or fed up with other things life throws at us, your documentaries transport me to a happy place. Thanks Norman!
I have so many fond memories of playing this game. It's still one of the best racing games I've come across.
Looking back, I was blessed that my parents bought us a SNES in 1992, and eventually Super Mario Kart. I spent hours and hours playing this game with family and friends, so much so that the songs are ingrained into my brain. I would love to know the history behind the box art and the font design.
What an amazing story! Very well done and I think we all have a place in our hearts for Mario Kart! Thank you!
How do you keep creating content at this level of quality? It's unbelievable.
As always, your work is flawless. No words are enough to describe how amazing your videos are. Congratulations man, you truly deserve!
This game is epic. This game helped the gaming industry in such a good way.
I never could play it well. It wasn't until the 64 generations of 3D games that I could get into kart racers. That being said I am happy to learn of its past.
