I live in Lafayette and get to see Sonny often. Will see him with Marcia Ball 5/19/22 at Rhythms on the River. Saw him last week at the Festival International de Louisiane here in Lafayette
Landreth is one of the most underrated guitarists of all time and deserves to be named up there among the best! Brilliant pairing on stage this Clapton loves it!
Agreed, and I'm way too late to the conversation. Clapton has the rep, but Sonny is pretty darn close in ability. Two totally different styles, but it sure works together, one of the best duets I've heard.
@@GoofyJester587 I prefer Roy Rogers at the Country End and.Sonny Landreth at the rock end Sonny has a distinctive sound & I liked him with John Hiatt back in the day.I have seen Rogers,Landreth,Trucks & Sardinas Live in Australia.
The title is "Promised Land". Sonny is the greatest modern day guitarist, IMHO. I have turned several frniends on to Sonny, ALL of them came away from the show absolutely raving about him. I will see him whenever he is in town...
Sonny is a monster with a technique that is just humbling. I found out about Sonny through an Edward Van Halen interview. He was Eddie’s favorite slide player and you can hear how Sonny influenced him on the song “Ballot or the Bullet” on the VH III album. So thank you Edward for giving that shine, just like Eric did later with his Crossroad shows. I love how Sonny brings out the fire in Eric on this particular performance. Great players tend to do that to one another and when it happens, it’s so special and rare. I love these players and will always be inspired by their God given gifts. I miss you Eddie, you were simply the GOAT and will forever be missed. 🙏 🎸
2:00 is why Clapton is a legend. It's his thought process for me. How he holds that unison bend and adds tension to his intro of his solo. I know hundreds of guitarist that could've started off with a bunch of notes but is telling a story and it comes off almost like he's speaking. It may not be one of his greatest guitar solos but he's doing what he does and he steps out to open the floor for Sonny. He's playing along with the band not trying to overplay. He gets in and out never overstaying his welcome.
One of my favourite live performances of Sonny Landreth. The drummer you see in the background is Doug Belote. He hails from New Orleans, Louisiana. This is his first really important gig. He was asked by Sonny Landreth to fill the spot and tells the story of how he was really shaking when about to play in front of 50,000 people. He says, "I'm thinking, Eric Clapton just told me to count it off with 50,000 people watching." What a great story!
I remember a few years back when Mark Knopfler had Sonny as a guest for one of his specials, and he was so impressed with his talent that he took a step back at every opportunity to allow Sonny to enjoy the spotlight...and that from a man who was treated like a red-headed stepchild by all the big dogs when he first came up. Props to Sonny, props to Mark...no comment on Slowhand.
I always reckon it's the sign of a really REALLY accomplished virtuoso musician. The difference is that, when a solo virtuoso comes on stage everyone else sounds plainer, when a true virtuoso comes on he sounds as good but everyone else also sounds better. (Moore v Gorham. No contest for most of course but, personally, I always rate Gorham higher as a band musician.) It's the 8th, 9th and 10th Buddhist Bulls in action!
I noticed that too when I saw him up close in a live performance at a small venue. Another thing I picked up on his how he uses other parts of his hands when he plays, i.e. not just the fingers. He's the real thing!
Wow. I haven't seen Clapton play like this in years. He is clearly such a fan of Sonny's - he is just watching every move Sonny makes as he shreds the stage after Clapton's solo. In-credible stuff.
I think it's one of the very finest duet as far as great guitar playing.... I could think of Mark Knopfler with Chet Atkins or Vince Gill with numerous other players... all different styles, but definitely all among the very best ones....
You need balls to share the stage with Sonny Landreth. That's why EC became legend: he always played with the best and became better. Plus a great songwriting AND a very special voice. The package made him so unique - guitar, singing, songwriting. His book of great songs is huge
Sonny isn't shy about getting it on with anyone, because he can! Can we have a little love for David Ransom? He's one of my fav bass players. He's driving it right along here but perhaps overlooked.
Clapton said he would always adapt his playing to the player. If it was old school blues he could keep it simple but he loved guitarists who pushed him. You can see it in his solo here.
Always glad to see Eric capture some of that old fire that he innovated in the Creme days. It was gone for a long time but his energy here is pretty good, especially following Sonny.
I remember when I lived in Breaux Bridge there was a club (I think it was named Mulate's) and he played there. A friend was a sound man so I knew he was playing there and I could kick my own a$% for not going to see him. My friend and his wife were going and I could well have gone!!
Two of the finest modern blues guitarists in the business right there on that one stage. And though Sonny is about six years younger than Eric, he looks about 10 years older!
I love this. Clapton and Landreth, both long-time faves of mine as they can really shine. I keep hearing a lot of Clapton's Crossroads lines from the Wheels of Fire take in here, fits the tune nicely. Thanks for the post.
I've talked to Sonny a couple of times after shows. He is one of the nicest people I've ever met. We stood around in the street and talked guitars, music, women etc until 2:30 in the morning. He is a true gentleman and a fantastic musician.

DAMN!!!!! Sonny Landreth IS EASILY in the top10 guitarist of today and I have never read about him in guitar world or anything!?!? Thats nuts, he has to be the best slide player down to him or Derek and I think Derek would tip his hat to Sonny and you hear about Trucks in every guitar magazine......no Sonny? This is THE dude when it comes to slide, and on a Strat, that thing sounds so amazing. His tone is amazing, is he playing a Dumble?
My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting Sonny in new hope PA after his show at Havana's a couple of years ago. He was great and very nice and humble gentleman.Such an underated player. His albums are fantastic. No- he did not play thru his Dumble amp. He had his Demeter and a 4-12 cabinet on the road. It appears he's p;laying his Dumble here though. Eric should tour with Sonny's band. Much hotter show!
I never thought any living guitarist could blow Clapton off the stage until I saw this video. Landreth is just blistering, smoking hot and on fire in his playing. I lost my breath watching him. Clapton seems to be enjoying watching him as well. 😜😜
I saw them in 1971 at the college dance hall that was just down the road from my house. That same year I saw, at the same venue: Chicago, J Geils Band, BTO and Poco. I was 8. The shows were free. I just wandered down there anytime I heard music and just walked in. How things have changed!!!
It's like Clapton sees the 2nd coming of Duanne Allman..Just saw Sonny last week with John Hiatt. if anything he's even better now. Excellent, thanks for the post!
Brilliant playing by everyone involved. Sonny is a force of nature. And Eric...what more can you say...he's the man! Love this video. How the hell could anyone dislike this video? jeez

Eric pushed him a little..then just let him go...Landreth has a VERY unique style...plays lead licks with his first three fingers and slide with the fourth....at the same damn time..he's an ugly genius.
I've heard of Sonny but this is first time I've ever seen him. He's shockingly good. I really dig his voice. His singing kinda reminds me of 80's/90's Alex Chilton. I'm a new fan!
james crowe Actually James I never seen him on his show on TV, but in movies; all in fun! So let me say it properly Dave Ranson holding down the bass like nobody's business! @sevenstringsamurai And, all though Clapton's "lead ",is really the response to Sonny's lead "call" - Eric's rhythm playing phrasing ,& intensity is unmistakable with it's signature.
Hot Damn ! Sonny got the usually stoic Eric to put some body English on his licks.
And a smile after they nailed it.
I love that Clapton watches Sonny's solo with absolute admiration in his eyes. And rightfully so!
I really love seeing them hug at the end.
Vince Gill said watching Sonny was like algebra. He just couldn’t understand it.
I live in Lafayette and get to see Sonny often. Will see him with Marcia Ball 5/19/22 at Rhythms on the River. Saw him last week at the Festival International de Louisiane here in Lafayette
Nonsense. You're ascribing some human virtues to Clapton. The guy is a money grubbing, self promoting turd of a man.
Clapton said that Sonny was 50 years ahead any guitarist in the world. He IS impressed.
Zwei der größten Guitar-Heros zusammen auf der Bühne, ein Traum.
Gavin Clelland never too late! Agree with your comment. Different styles but sonny is a master at what he does. Effortless.
Underrated? By who? Only fools can ignore him!
Sonny is one of Derek Trucks' only peers imo.

Clapton is really cool about letting other people shine.
That's class
It also sounds good.
Sonny is the one of the best slide players in the world and when you add that to Clapton letting others shine it makes amazing music.
He did the same with John Mayer..Clapton is one amazing human being.

There is some wicked good chemistry there. To be followed up , I hope.
Sonny plays behind the slide with his others fingers. An incredible technique.

I wondered who the bass player and drummer were!

Clapton has always found the best cats to jam with!
Most of us in awe of these two guitar legends, but gotta give props to the rhythm section here. In the pocket and tight af.

Never been that impressed by Clapton. Seems over-hyped to me. Love Sonny Landreth. One of my favorite musicians of all time.
