You can see the admiration Eric has for J.J. in his facial expressions. When J.J. motioned for Eric to start singing the lead, Eric shook his head, you can almost see him saying, “Oh hell NO!” You think I’m gonna sing this in front of the man who wrote these songs? Great stuff.
"Call Me The Breeze" sounded great when JJ Cale released his "Naturally" LP in 1971 and it still sounds great in 2023. A true American classic. If you don't love this song, there is probably something wrong with you...
Eric’s humility is amazing, notice how JJ Cale indicated for Eric to come up to the front of the stage and Eric just smiled and shook his head, happy for JJ to have the spot light. He is so respectful of all his guests that way.
All the greats have humility because they already have reached the top or near it.... it is wonderful. I am a guitar player for about 45 years.... Studio One Doraville Ga..... roots. Funny story... one time a member of the Georgia Satellites walked into a club and I asked him, "hey, aren't you the guy from the Black Crowes's? (I attended the rival Lassiter HS, they were from Walton.... later I attended the same schools as Peter Buck)... he replies "NO, The GA Sattellites"... Till this day I laugh
He wanted Eric to take the mic so he could do the vocal on After Midnight...it was Eric who covered in almost 2 years before JJ released his own version. JJ once said the check he got from Eric's cover allowed him to continue his musical path when he was close to giving it up.
@@tomneff7030 JJ actually originally recorded After Midnight in 1966, a few years before Delaney turned Eric on to his music. It's an upbeat, rocking version, much like the way Eric later recorded it. th-cam.com/video/-YUhVU__uPw/w-d-xo.html
I used to play pool with Eric in Antigua I worked as a Chef at the Copper and Lumber Store. Pool was played At Dougie's place after hours. Eric had been sober for a bit. I wasn't. One of my best memories. We played 3 x. I won once. I'm sober 30 plus years now. Eric was a big influence in my early sobriety. God bless you.
Richard, a long time ago, I flew to Antigua from NYC for the "Around the Island" sailboat race; don't know if it's still going. When I boarded the plane, I saw Eric sitting in first class. I asked the stewardess if that was him, and she responded yes. I thought nothing of it and, at the time, didn't know anything about Dougie's or that Eric had a rehab facility on the island. After hearing about Dougie's and that he was a regular, I decided to visit. One evening, I walked up the stairs and saw a few pool tables off to the right. I wrote my name on the chalkboard against the back wall and waited for my turn. I didn't even notice he was in there playing pool. I ended up playing against him, and won! He was such a kind, mild mannered guy. No ego whatsoever. He introduced himself as Eric, and that was it.

King of The Tulsa Blues. Thank you Mr. J.J. Cale. Eric Clapton`s very own hero. How happy is ol` slow hand on this stage with these musical genius`s playing this perfect boogie/blues rift, just perfect for Clapton to shine. J.J. Cale brought out the best of E.C. once E.C. discovered him, and this relationship worked out to both men`s benefit and mutual respect for each other. Pure music magic of the highest order in any genre or any time.
I had the pleasure of seeing the incomparable JJ several times - always in intimate settings - and he was amazing. Best boogie shuffle grooves ever. RIP JJ, so glad I have your music to keep you alive.

JJ Cale was an American treasure that too few knew about, unfortunately. He wrote so many songs made famous by others that it's actually hard to believe. He has a serious case of "bed-head" here! No glamor issues with JJ; he was the real deal.
I so agree. I think it was Clapton's way of thanking an unsung hero. JJ Cale never wanted stardom, but it suits him nicely. My fav is the breeze song. Rolling along.

The mastery of filling the air with as few notes as neccessary. This is the difference between running through a million notes per second and actually making good music with soul
My dad used to say of all the extra stuff, "You're just throwing darts now," whether it was playing or singing harmony. Sometimes, the dart-throwing led to some inventive (& always purely unintentional) chord progressions/ harmonies, but usually it just murkied up otherwise good music.
@@michaeloneill1763 It's definitively a quote to PAUZE and think about. I more than just admire B.B.King (and experienced him live) and I could never hold a candle to his art. BUT may I - in all modesty - suggest, that 'Notes matter' AS WELL AS 'the spaces inbetween' ? What is your opinion on this 'modulation', Mr. Michael O'Neill, and do you think Mr. B.B.King would be prepared to, let's say, not totally reject this notion ? Michael W Dell
@@michaeldell2349 If B.B. King rejected that notion he'd be out of work, but he knows where to leave the spaces in between. So many rock guitarists are praised because they can cram in as many notes as possible in one bar of music, but a real musician plays with emotional intensity and heartfelt timing. B.B. is so good at that.
The best point in this video is, the body language! The look of the human feeling of respect and appreciation between each of the musicians on stage it is fabulous for my emotion. The ground thinking of JJ, the pleasure of Eric C to share this moment with him, the smile of satisfaction of Christine looking the appreciation of his man to in the happiness, the bassman Rosenberger, quiet but him too sharing his good feeling. This is a beautyfull video of JJ Cale that I like like the live itself. This is the expression of the real sens of the live, friendship, respect and attention to the others. He just wants to be in the mix so he can hear other artists he admires shine in their own way, You can see it. Saw him with CREAM in 69. He was savagely hot. . So were Jack and Ginger

I'll be cranking him up forever. Well till hell calls me home. Pretty sure they'll let me in!! I¡ Not that cool and I've spent last 50 years busting my ass to earn my ticket.
Clapton is, in my opinion, the greatest blues guitarist there ever was. His sound, his intuition for perfect improvised solos all of which are sheer bloody poetry and on top of all that he is a beautiful human being.
Yeah, JJ Cole was a remarkable talented musician. And Clapton is such a class act by stepping back and letting him have centre stage. This is the definition of music written and performed by REAL Artists. ✨✌️💙🇺🇲

Everything JJ Cale does looks so effortless to him. So much respect for the man, I will always cherish his music. Still hard to believe he's gone but no doubt his legacy will live on,
He is best gitar and blues man In the world. I love him t.Ulla
First time I knew of him was with the song 'I'll make love to you any old time'. And from that he is my hero.
What he's gone? fu

Blessings for this brilliance !!!
JJ being backed up by Clapton. What a great style and respect for a legend.
The very best of two absolutely fantastic musicians we were lucky to grow up listening to day in and day out....RIP JJ Cale
J J Cale is rocking them in Rock & Roll Heaven and Eric is still rocking them in our world - two masters at work.
J.J.the Best man💕
Love how John Mayer is grooving to Clapton's solo at the back.
A character study. He is so transparently into the music. When he's playing. When he's listening.
The modern guitarists should take a lesson or two from these legends...optimal play is what creates the melody..not diluting the song with endless riffs....grammatically correct tones..just a piece of pure art manifesting in the form of music ❤❤
I love when JJ nods to clapton for the first solo, and clapton just denies it. He gives JJ that moment. It puts a tear in my eye to see the respect between two of my heroes. God bless you JJ
He's telling Eric to sing
sid stewart It's still a solo, it's called solo singing.
Lol JJ was just messing around... Obviously they had rehearsed this with JJ singing. He was playfully putting him on the spot.
innoutburger23 No, he's telling him to sing.
Bapalapa30 If I'd've been JJ Cale I woulda announced, "Eric Clapton, the vocal," (ala Jack Bruce) and when Eric shook his head I'd've groaned, "Aww, c'man, Slowhand." Clap woulda stepped up to the mike then or the audience woulda been on his case. Great tunes anyway!
Eric Clapton & J.J. Cale- what a gift just to be able to sit & hear them""BOTH"- I could sit & listen to both all day!!!!! Abosolutely FANTASTIC!!!🤠
I’m with you!
Yessss !! This is awesome !
No idea how often I listen to this video
It’s a phenomenon to be experienced and enjoyed , free of laborious comparisons . There never was before , and there never will be another . Enjoy him , revel in the Mastery and Creativity . Rare and Incomparable . Feel lucky you found him . Git ‘em Stevie !
All Blues Fans who know JJ Cale miss him so much. Thank you JJ for all the great music and it helps having music in these hard times!
Very true ,for me JJ not dead, his music is here
GREAT TV SPECIAL, THANK YOU GUYS. LOVED IT. DOC MAGOO PJ VIETNAM PARA/RESCUE 1969-1975,THANKS FOR A GREAT SHOW.
The smile on Eric's face at the end tells it all................He loves doing these " impromptu " concerts. Great vid.
Toujours là à écouter et regarder JJ CALE !!! Fabuleux !!!
J J Cale was one of the best country rock musicians in the world. Shame he passed away too early.
Country rock???? 😅
JJ had a wonderful understated style of singing and playing.Other artists would take his songs, jazz them up and make hits of them.Great song writer who just loved performing for the fans.He wasn’t interested in the limelight as much as just putting out good music for the fans to enjoy.
It was the same with Neil diamonds song red red wine he wrote it ub40 made it popular
It's wonderful how Eric doesn't take the lime light. There's enough admiration to be shared.
Eric really respected JJ
JJ Cale is so effortlessly cool, makes it look easy! All of that on top of being the greatest songwriter ever!
So good to see these two great musicians play together. ✌ .Thats the music i have grown up with..and ❤.. Christine looks so happy..😎 RIP JJ
The great Eric Clapton playing rhythm???? This is one fine video!!!!!!!!! Thanks
I love how happy Clapton looks knowing he's playing alongside his hero.
Makes one joyful just seeing Clapton so happy 😊
@Gary Ault 9:50 or so in the video - the love is there. peace
;)
Yip! But I wish Clapton hadn't used so much distortion. It cheapens it all.
It's like his grinning face on the cover of "Riding with the King" where he's driving a convertible with BB King in the backseat. He's thinking, "Oh my God...pinch me! I can't believe BB King agreed to make an album with me!"
JJ always made it look so easy. What a talent.
You got to love this, the two legends playing together, top stuff
Bring it on ...this makes me smile, such a classic combination❤
JJ Cale is a treasure that most people have never heard of.
1974 when i was 16 and was camping on the famous camping the Appelhof on the Island Terschelling Holland. This was a great hit of JJ Cale.
When you have Eric Clapton playing with J.J. Cale you know J.J. is special.
Most have. They just don't know it. Darn it.
I bought his very first LP and have been a fan from the start. I especially liked his song Magnolia... Greetings from Swaziland.
Love these guys. Brought tears to my eyes. Have 5 JJ Cale albums.
I love these guys so much! So great to see Eric smile! Thank you JJ Cale for all your great work... I love your voice ... and songs!
This is real music as it should be...J.J Cale and Eric Clapton together are just something else...

Pretty awesome is right!!
was blessed as a lad to hear JJ in house by now now 84 yr old dad. always one of my favorites - couldn't help but turn my HS and college pals onto him. Is there better mellow cool? and with another fixture of my music years, Clapton, on stage... wow!
Damn. It's such a joy hearing Clapper play rhythm behind J.J. Cale! Cat's got the feel for sure! It's obvious how much fun E.C. is having. I love this!
Yes. The drummer and base player. So extremely good, and tight as a rock,on the theme, less is more. Tulsa sound. Living far from Tulsa, west coast of Sweden. Bought my first JJ-Cale album 1979!
The drummer and the man on base, must be local legends. Extremely good. Not known by name, in Scandinavia.
there's something magical about JJ cale playing guitar
a grand-son of King David. He made his mind up on the Name of God. 🍷😘
Best SONG for me was on the road to Escondido maybe.
Collaboration with Cale.
SONG halfway through LP about there's nothing I haven't seen that you can show me....
Etc.
Haha
Well said! There aren't many people that realize how good a guitar player JJ Cale was . God Rest his soul
He makes it look so easy… Maybe it is 😇.
Sometimes
JJ Cale was an American treasure that too few knew about, unfortunately. He wrote so many songs made famous by others that it's actually hard to believe. He has a serious case of "bed-head" here! No glamor issues with JJ; he was the real deal.
I so agree. I think it was Clapton's way of thanking an unsung hero. JJ Cale never wanted stardom, but it suits him nicely. My fav is the breeze song. Rolling along.

At 81, just celebrated 60 years marriage (same wife) music can't get any better!.
To have seen these two play is a dream that will pinch me as long as I live. I so wished JJ Cale would've stayed with us a little longer to cut more songs alone and with EC. One of the most underrated guitar players ever, few know how much John Cale's playing influenced other guitar greats.

+noobi core. that's cute..A "dream that will pinch me". I thought the expression was "pinch me to see that I'm not dreaming" some thing like that. u so funny.
A special, exciting style of playing guitar. J.J., Clapton and Knopfler play it outstandingly.
JJ Cale, not many people can say Eric Clapton gladly played rhythm guitar for them. Thanks for all the great music !!!
Pure awesome! Sometimes it takes some digging to find these types of diamonds in music. This is what it is all about. Pure joy to all!
I lived it. Just saying.
The best gift a person can give or receive, is the loyalty and affection of a lasting friendship. Here, between these two men, it is so plainly illustrated. To stand on
a stage and play music together, makes them both so happy. Hats off to J.J. Cale and to Eric Clapton. Rest in peace, J.J.
JJCale, as humble as he is, was a wonderful songwriter.
So beautiful, deep, sincere, human : pure magic ! JJClaptcale for ever !
The amount of respect Eric shows JJ on stage is so endearing. Clearly has the utmost respect and love for him. Lovey to see. ❤
John Cale is an n icon unrecognized fairly!!! I worked radio in 70s and played everything of jj's I could get by with. I have his music in my truck and my RV " at all times!" 👍🏻💥🙏🏻🧙🏻♂️

The mastery of filling the air with as few notes as neccessary. This is the difference between running through a million notes per second and actually making good music with soul
Just great!
My dad used to say of all the extra stuff, "You're just throwing darts now," whether it was playing or singing harmony. Sometimes, the dart-throwing led to some inventive (& always purely unintentional) chord progressions/ harmonies, but usually it just murkied up otherwise good music.
B.B. King said it's not the notes, it's the spaces between the notes.
BRAVO... je m'excuse pour mon anglais un peu déficient, je parle depuis ma terre francophone le Québec, Daniel de Saint-Emile de Suffolk
you got it right
You said it best!
So well said sir
As always, make peace not war people . Listen to the man upstairs 🙌! 2/17/22
Merci beau Coupe gray.
i don't think i've ever seen eric as in awe of a fellow musician, it's so nice to see him smile. jj was so amazing, he played so effortlessly it was like the guitar was just an extension of his body. it's a joy to watch. rip jj.
the most relaxing fingerpick on the guitar,,,they catch it without a drop of sweat
You can definitely feel the affection Eric has for J.J. Cale.
They both respected each other hugely
No vying for top spot - a real duo
They helped make each other rich and entertained millions of people doing it.
Oh yes for sure! I agree
Superb! Class! Pure musical genius. No gimmicks, no half naked females gyrating all over the place - just pure talent!!
I never begrudge half naked chicks.
Get a life really??? what a sad and pathetic comment. Like a fool who knows very little about music you wud be more respected if you had said nothing. Now everyone knows you know next to nothing. There are millions of no name guitarist that are miles above overrated Eric. Open up your eyes.. genius tests funny very funny lol.
No need for distractions like that. Just the real thing.
I’d take some nice chicks!
You have a problem with naked females?
Strange to think of. This humble man and his talent is a big part of my musical spectre. Here where i live in northtern nowhere Norway. The power of REAL rock and blues has no limits. RIP JJ, i’ll always miss you❤️
I'm 80 years old and I totally believe these 2 together are the best I have ever ever heard.
Listen to the hot kicks bass in back
And watch the little gal on the flat top playing rhythm guitar. Absolutely getting it. Eric turned to her and they upped the beat.
JJ has played some of the most magical riffs in history, the openers to both songs prime examples.
Soooo true. JJ Intro notes here are distinct and original. EC can BURN...anytime he wants to he's got nothing left to prove. He just wants to be in the mix so he can hear other artists he admires shine in their own way, You can see it. Saw him with CREAM in 69. He was savagely hot. . So were Jack and Ginger
Love his style seems simple yet not. Even when he go off key I don’t mind. Definitely be bumping these folks for the next 50 years or so if possible
Unlike most jam sessions this sounds like a band that has been together for ages. Clapton is so gracious - happy to lay back and play rhythm.
total professionals playing an easy sweet groove sitting down in the pocket.
Calpton refused to take credit for songs he didn't write. It was just the right thing to do. It's called morals....

JJ is a very bluesman, capable to be dirt like dust of the road, or clean like the sky you see when you run on the road with a convertible car. JJ is a man of the road, a musician of the road - all we owe so much at JJ cale🙏

Nothing like watching the greatest people in their field do what they do best!!
One of those amazing moments where JJ upped his tempo and sounds amazing still!
No women no cy
The little gal on rythem guitar jacked it up. She's JJs side kick. Really good for him.
Yes that tempo change gives me another heartfelt insight into LIVE music 👍
Just so kool, the way he just lays down a tune and slides onto the stool, then wanders around whilst picking! I love JJ, RIP my man.
I start to listen to Erik Clapton when he was in Derek and the Dominos a very very long time ago, nobody beat him STILL❤
Hi. Johnny here,64 years young. JJ one of first rockers I REALLY got into. Had older sister so first exposed to Beatles early years. As patty got into high school I got ahold of Burden and the Animals. Starting to get interesting. Brother Joe began getting high so found Airplane, Hendrick and such. Southern rock beginning to become a thing.one of those things became my fav, JJ Cale. Remained so for life. Damn was he cool. So fing smooth. Everything he did seemed effortless. And the music so different ! I couldn't turn it off. JJ definitely in heaven. Hell couldn't let him in. He would have caused the fires to go out. He was just that damn COOL!!! Still that damn COOL!

No…he’s not..but he’s still one of the greatest

I don't know anything about drums, but those Crossroads drummers always make me smile. Pure groove and talent.
Joyous! What great singing, lyrics, guitars - all three. Wonderful!
Yeah, JJ Cole was a remarkable talented musician. And Clapton is such a class act by stepping back and letting him have centre stage.
This is the definition of music written and performed by REAL Artists. ✨✌️💙🇺🇲
CALE was always so sincere, and humble love this quality, in a person
Absolutely friend, and the fact that we are no longer there I am so sorry, he made beautiful songs!
What makes EC so great, is that he doesn't have to be the man all the time. He will play rhythm and let others solo-no ego
Dude just loves playing, don't think he cares what the specifics are
I agree so much with these comments above. Eric certainly doesn’t crave the limelight. He loves his craft not the glamour!
Sobriety, my friends. Fits him like a glove, love and tolerance of others his code.✌👁🙏
Yeah. He wasn't always that way though. In the 60s and part if the 70s. He had a legendary ego but, I guess most of us do grow up. It would sure be nice to have his talent and experiences when I grow up. I'm only 53 now so, I got a ways to go yet. Thank goodness. He always seems like a class act and a hell of a guy these days.
