Yes it has soul and depth, and it lacked all that with Clapton, good as he is. If you want to see real emotion in it, watch prince. Some songs are personal, you can't cover them without losing a lot.
To think, Clapton was already a star when Prince Rogers Nelson was still a young boy. All these years later Clapton is still out there and honouring a fellow musician.
I was a master gardener for Prince I would hear him play his concert grand piano and his guitars alot because He would have his guitars and paino hooked up to a monster of a amplifier. Amazing to see and hear a guitar legend, like Clapton, playing a song from one legend, to another. I'm sure Prince would be out of his mind with pride, and happiness to witness Eric Clapton performing one of his greatest hits. God rest ye merry soul, Prince. You left this earth with nothing less to prove. Except for an amazing library on amazing songs and music.

What a great version of the master Eric Clapton!, I still remember in my teens in the 80s, having gathered to buy the Vinyl album "Prince and the Revolution"
👍 As a 70ish y.o. Baby Boomer who grew up with Prince’s original, I thought this was a 👏 cover by Eric. It’s a big part of my youth - not only bc of Prince and this song, but SO much more music, AND the good ‘ole days’ of a 🌟 time period of life in general. The song reminds me of many other ‘classics’ - by the Stones, Procal Harem (‘Whiter Shade of Pale’), Neil Young, Dylan, and a LOT more. This is the music that withstands the test of time - generation after generation (whether the originals or more recent covers like this)! * Can’t believe I haven’t seen or heard this before today 🙃.
Thank you for this posting. It's definitely the best cover and tribute to Prince. One legend, tribute to another. At this age, Eric is still the best at singing, hitting all the notes, and blending his style into one of Prince's signature solos.
Wonderful to see eric pay tribute to prince. Its a shame prince wasnt alive to see it. Im sure he would have loved it. Knowing one of his songs is listed as one of the greatest songs ever written. And is being played with respect by one of the grestest guitarists of all time.

EC was once the guest on Desert Island Discs (a long running UK radio series) and chose this as his one record if restricted to only one to have on a desert island. He described it as "pure blues". True!
This is the greatest tribute and affirmation for Prince. ...Prince straddled many genres and so, always was considered outside the rock legends....I think this tribute from the great Eric Clapton & Gilmour et al..seals the debate on Prince's craft and genius...

Clapton selected the iconic 1983 song ‘Purple Rain’ as one of his favorite songs, describing it as a “lifesaver.”
