Funny story years ago I was picking up my daughter Kennedy at the daycare. One of the ladies asked me if I like Eric Clapton’s music and I answered yes, then asked her how she knew. She said the babies were about to go to sleep and the song Layla came on . My daughter jumped up and said ‘ that’s daddy’s song by Eric Slow Hand ‘..lol. She was like 27 months old and I was so proud.
Definitely one of the best songs ever written, IMO. I loved learning it from the unplugged performance; every other version is equally beautiful. We wrote another verse to extend the tune after the first solo - nothing detracting just substituted “I can see your face” for “I can hear your voice”. The song was always over too soon for us (me, lol) otherwise. Mr. C, we play a lot of your songs (I insist when they make me - the drummer - sing). We often play the ending of the original Layla to end the night (we’re just a three piece and do it with just keys, bass and drums). You should come to the Dusk til Dawn Blues Festival at the Oklahoma Blues Hall of Fame in Rentiesville, OK. You’d love it - lots of great blues players and bands from all over the country and the world. Labor Day weekend.

He is no Paul Rodgers or Freddie Mercury, but he sings like he means his lyrics, and he rarely sings out of tune live.

That keyboard solo really encapsulates the feeling of a broken love. The panging, raw and confused emotions of a relationship gone too soon. Mixed and odd, unfamiliar before building into a brilliant and defiant flame, angered even that one had not seen old love as an opportunity to move on. I'm 22 but wish I'd found this golden music earlier

Saw him in the Macon Coliseum (Ga.)he had broke his leg and he played the night sitting on a stool,played a great concert, we left the concert and turned on the radio headed back home to learned that the Lynyrd Skynyrd band's plane crashed,bummed out a great night with EC.
The first 6 minutes of this video is perhaps the finest example of heart tugging guitar coupled with a vocal track that is gut wrenching. It lays bare the hurt and mixed feelings that a love gone wrong can do to a person. You can't go back and fix things. All you can do is try to continue to make one day after another...I think this may be the best playing and singing i've ever heard...

I miss SRV these guys kind of fill that gap for me. I feel like Mayer is the only modern player that gets blues playing like Clapton and SRV did. His renditions of classic Hendrix songs are so awesome. Mayer and Clapton are the best.

In Clapton's solo Gadd (drummer) is so intense!!! omfg, when he does his thing on the snare drum at 6:50 I jumped outa my seat. These guys completely immerse themselves into the music and drag you with them.

I have heard on good authority Eric just sends the music to Steve and he simply rocks up and blows Eric away, every time. he's up there with the best, along with the likes of Jeff Porcaro - both of which are session players for Steely Dan. It doesn't take a magician to realise why. Gadd remains my favourite though, there is just something special about him.
This is why I love drummers like Steve Gadd, Jeff Porcaro or the ever-underrated Ringo Starr - they play for the music, not to show off how fast or complex their drumming is.
As a modern member of the more technical guitar playing community I have to tip my hat to the sheer passion of that solo. Mr Slowhand I bow to your excellence.
No offense, and I have great respect for Eric Clapton, but I think that Carlos Santana has better guitar solos (absolutely amazing ones, like in his Mexico City concert on TH-cam).
Just discovered this, through a reaction video of all things. My gosh, this is why I have loved Eric Clapton since I first heard him when I was 17 in 1970. The feeling in this solo is spell binding. His solos are always so melodic and he is able to wring true beauty out of that guitar. Clapton will always be my first choice of guitar players to listen to.
Tim Carmon is great and you can tell Eric appreciates his talent too. Eric is great and he picks great people to play with him. As I've said before I'm 72 and Eric Clapton has given me a new reason to live. He's still going at my age and doing a great job, too. Just love the guy. Wish I could tell him so he knew how much he means to so many people.

blues guitar players and singer have something that is irritating after some hour of listening to them but eric has the magic of not repeating himself or getting bored. he doesnt play the exact same and he feels it every time. his improvisation is out of this world!!

Randomly met this gorgeous girl and we started talking about music...dug into my Clapton memories went through the list of every thing. Then this beautiful soul took me by the hand isolated us and showed me this version of Old Love...When I say I've never been the same since I mean it, had the best time of my life leading up to that and afterwards. Wake the next morning to never see this girl again and that's when this song hit me...hit me real hard.

Simply the best all around guitar player of all time. GOAT!! Who else plays this clean and clear at almost any kind of music. He does it all with perfection. Get rid of those cheating whammy bars and synthetic static sounding guitar and guitar players all together. Just give me the sound of a plain electric guitar. BB King wasn't lying.
This song reminds me of how when you completely move on from a woman and find one you want to marry and suddenly the woman who cut you off because she only saw you as a “friend” wants to pop back in your life and text you when her dream guy dumped her. You know you moved on but the pain and everything Eric sang still fucks with your mind. You block her phone and “coincidentally” run into her. Women make everything harder than it needs to be... Men aren’t toys to be dropped and picked up. We aren’t allowed to have emotions but it hurts the same.
Some random thoughts after watching this video all day: 1) God that solo is amazing. Especially ~6:15. Just no words 2) Love the reaction of the band when keyboards begin solo, like "wtf this tone", but with time it becomes such an amazing solo 3) Whenever I see this drummer I always feel like he is going to die at the stage performing lol 4) This tune is amazing, found this out only yesterday and been replaying on repeat since then 5) Love that the band is genuinely happy while performing, look at everyone during keyboard solo, they seem happy.

blues guitar players and singer have something that is irritating after some hour of listening to them but eric has the magic of not repeating himself or getting bored. he doesnt play the exact same and he feels it every time. his improvisation is out of this world!!

Randomly met this gorgeous girl and we started talking about music...dug into my Clapton memories went through the list of every thing. Then this beautiful soul took me by the hand isolated us and showed me this version of Old Love...When I say I've never been the same since I mean it, had the best time of my life leading up to that and afterwards. Wake the next morning to never see this girl again and that's when this song hit me...hit me real hard.
Eric Clapton is and will always be a legend and an inspiration not just to guitarists but to humanity as well. Man I love Eric Clapton.

This song reminds me of how when you completely move on from a woman and find one you want to marry and suddenly the woman who cut you off because she only saw you as a “friend” wants to pop back in your life and text you when her dream guy dumped her. You know you moved on but the pain and everything Eric sang still fucks with your mind. You block her phone and “coincidentally” run into her. Women make everything harder than it needs to be... Men aren’t toys to be dropped and picked up. We aren’t allowed to have emotions but it hurts the same.

Some random thoughts after watching this video all day:
1) God that solo is amazing. Especially ~6:15. Just no words
2) Love the reaction of the band when keyboards begin solo, like "wtf this tone", but with time it becomes such an amazing solo
3) Whenever I see this drummer I always feel like he is going to die at the stage performing lol
4) This tune is amazing, found this out only yesterday and been replaying on repeat since then
5) Love that the band is genuinely happy while performing, look at everyone during keyboard solo, they seem happy.

That clean solo at the beginning is the most amazing guitar play I ever heard in my life...
I’m 59, I’ve been listening to him since his Cream Days. I lost the love of my life. My wife 6 years ago. The words of this song for me. Express what I’ve gone through, and my utter frustration. His voice the tight tight band. And when is the last time you saw a man getting a standing ovation in the middle of his solo. Then Tim Common just kills that electric piano.
