  • The Hemmings ‘69 Chevelle SS 396 convertible, repowered with a new Chevrolet Performance ZZ427 crate engine and Supermatic 4L85E four-speed automatic overdrive, went out on the Hemmings Great Race last summer for its first real reliability test, completing the trip without any major incidents. But, when we got the Chevelle out of storage this spring, some of last summer’s roadside repairs were still lingering.
Shop Manager Junior Nevison and Hemmings Muscle Machines Editor-in-Chief Terry McGean pull the Chevelle into the shop and delve into getting the car sorted and properly tuned for The Great Race 2023.
Tuning the Holley carburetor led to the discovery of a couple vacuum leaks, and dialing in proper float levels, idle mixture, and ignition timing changed the engine’s temperament. A POR15 caliper paint tutorial offers steps to achieving lasting results.

Great video. Juniors uncle bought a new 1969 Chevelle with a 396-375hp 4 speed, two door hard top. The car had the chambered exhaust which didn't have mufflers just dimples in the exhaust pipe. His then 60 year old grandmother used it when she needed to drive somewhere. There were a lot of stories around the city amongst the car guys about the old lady in the blue Chevelle and what happened when they thought it would be fun to mess with her. They were rolling away from the stop light and she was already at the next one. There may have been a lot of tire smoke and tire marks on the road. It was mentioned upon occasion that shifting the car into 4th at 100 mph, the rear end of the car would weave back and forth. The trade in car was his grandma's 1965, 140hp-4 speed, triple black convertible.

In some of the quick views, it was hard to tell where the engine fan was positioned. For best efficiency the fan blade should be 1/3rd in the shroud, 2/3rd out. The fan not only pushes air backward, but it also slings it out along the radius. If the fan is fully engaged within the shroud, the shroud will block airflow along the radius in turn drawing less air through the radiator.
