3 quarts in 1300 miles is actually a lot of oil consumption, even for a 1959 (65 years old). Cars from the 50's did tend to burn (and leak) more oil than cars from the 70's and newer - but we are talking typically less than 1 quart per 1000 miles range, not 2.5 quarts per 1000 miles. I do agree, if it was mine, other than checking the ignition timing, fixing easy to fix oil leaks, and checking whatever it has for a crankcase ventilation (PCVs were just starting to be used in '59), I would just drive it and regularly check and add oil...
It wasn't until Toyota hit the USA that car companies were forced to use good metal in the engines. American cars were designed to wear out before 100,000. And frames were made of soft metal to ride quiet, and rarely lasted more than 10 years on road salt areas or seaside.
My old 03 WRX went through fluids. Every time I filled the gas I would dump in a quart of oil, 1/2 gallon of coolant, and check the power steering level. At least the brakes didn't leak!
The push button transmission selector is vacuum operated. If you have a slight vacuum leak, reving the engine will generate a spike in manifold vacuum enabling the shift. If it’s only on that selection, then the selector is obviously the issue.
Engine vacuum is higher at idle, so this isn't likely. Also, A quick google shows a shift linkage available for purchase. I can't find anything indicating it's operated by vacuum.
The push buttons are cable actuated. These need to be adjusted where the cable goes into trans. Need to drop the trans oil pan for that on the earlier ones, later ones got an adjustment wheel. These torqueflites are pretty good
Dude who rebuilds tractors and whatnot seems like a wholesome dude needs to take care of himself, man is shaking at every word when he was explaining what he did on the tractor
My grandfather had a push-button Chrysler product and left my sister in the car while he went inside a store. She was very young at the time, and plucked all the transmission buttons out of the dash while he was inside.
Whoever said the stock camshaft is on backorder doesn't have any business looking up parts. There are 34 of them in the parts depot as of right now. They're never on backorder, and Hellcats rarely have this problem unless they're abused. It's far less of a problem than what the 5.7l trucks have.

19:05 ish "It does a pretty great job of stopping the car". NOOO. It does a pretty great job of holding the car in place AFTER you've come to a complete stop where you want to park it, shifted into Neutral, and shut everything down so you can get out of it without it rolling away because there's no such thing as a Park position in this one. Anyway, the car still has conventional drum brakes at each corner that are 100% responsible for doing a so-so job of stopping the car. And why did this "wizard" not only NOT correct him, but he actually doubled down on it??? There were a couple more things that were iffy at best, but I ain't watchin' it again to try to find them. Others have mentioned it already, but I feel like a little doubling down on this one, so here it is... Please no more Christine references. They were stale 30 years ago.
My grandmother had a 56 Plymouth with the push button power flight transmission. It worked 25% of the time. Usually it was the passenger job to jump out and rock it back and forward while the drive pushed between buttons hoping it would engage. Good times
I honestly believe that a good machine shop / fabricator can get the tractor rear hydraulics working but there will be just basic tractor pulling things apart to get those things. Tractor shops do this all the time.
You are one of the few. I fast forwarded it away from the stupid ass choking, and immediately got hit with a fake hood slam. Gave up. Too stupid for me.
My 59 Plymouth Savoy had a push button shift. It would do 65 in low, but topped out at 90. It was just a 2 speed. I seem to remember it was called a Powerflite. But that was 57 years ago, might be my memory😜. My brother had an auto shop and we had to put a reverse band in it when I first got it.
Glad you guys had fun with that! And just noticed for the first time that Hoovie Looks a tiny bit like Owen Wilson. So now we know what hed look like in the remake!
STOP putting it in Neutral between Reverse and Drive. Just push the button of the gear you want, and go. Stop putting it in Neutral unless you're Parking it.
Those push button transmissions are vacuum operated. If you watch Christine, Arnie had to rev the engine up to get Christine into Darnell's shop. It was a common issue with those push button transmissions but nothing to worry about.

My dad bought a new 1959 Plymouth in mid August of the year. The solid MOPAR 318 V8 and automatic 3 speed push button transmission was just about bullet proof . Sadly by 1965 the front quarter panels and fenders were rusted and rotted out.
Out of all Hoovie’s purchases the Fury is the absolute best! For what you paid you could easily afford to spend a few K and still come out on top. Cheaper than a full restoration and you’ve got a superb car. The Christine jokes are getting a bit tired. 👍🏻🙂

if they change the oil that might reduce consumption. Old oil burns no matter how much new oil you add.
*vw has entered the chat*
...and I thought he said 3/4 of a quart over 1300 miles.
It wasn't until Toyota hit the USA that car companies were forced to use good metal in the engines. American cars were designed to wear out before 100,000. And frames were made of soft metal to ride quiet, and rarely lasted more than 10 years on road salt areas or seaside.

That spits in your ‘59 Fury as well.
@RobinDale50 you beat me to it
Wizards labor is CHEAP
My favorite was the time he was looking at a Rolex online when Hoovie walked in. Wizard is mercilessly funny.
The flaw in the Christine gags is the car itself would make all the repairs and there would be no need for the Car Wizard whatsoever.
The push button transmission selector is vacuum operated. If you have a slight vacuum leak, reving the engine will generate a spike in manifold vacuum enabling the shift.
If it’s only on that selection, then the selector is obviously the issue.
I believe this one is cable acutated the Edsel was electric.
Engine vacuum is higher at idle, so this isn't likely. Also, A quick google shows a shift linkage available for purchase. I can't find anything indicating it's operated by vacuum.
I wonder if lubing up the linkage would help. Revving the engine causes a small amount of vibration that allows the linkage to slip into place.
The push buttons are cable actuated. These need to be adjusted where the cable goes into trans. Need to drop the trans oil pan for that on the earlier ones, later ones got an adjustment wheel. These torqueflites are pretty good
I was thinking the same thing with the vacuum I would have never guessed the buttons would be cable operated
I admire Wizard's commitment to the bit.
