The group started as a jam session...but when musicians of this capability are involved, interesting things happen. They quickly put this song together and then had no name for it. One of them (Harrison, I think) looked at a shipping crate in the warehouse where they were set up, and the crate was stenciled "HANDLE WITH CARE"--problem solved!

The way they got started was they were all over at George Harrison house someone jokingly said lets form a band I think it was Bob who said ya we should so they wrote & recorded 2 songs in 24 HR span! They did not use there real names though but I don't remember what there aliases were! though

It was recorded at Bob Dylans studio and there was a box labeled HANDLE WITH CARE. This was originally recorded as the B-Side for George Harrisons (then) latest single but the studio thought it was too good for a B-Side and wanted it released on it's own.

The story is... George was about to release a single. The record company wanted a side "B". George approached his producer, Jeff Lynne and said, I need a side "B" song. Jeff was having a lunch date with Roy and invited George to the lunch. George at the lunch explained he needed a side "B" on his single. With one day to prepare, they contacted Bob Dylan who lived nearby and had a recording studio in his garage. Roy tagged along to watch. George had to head over to Tom Petty's house to get his guitar. Tom join them in the trip to Dylan's house. There they were attempting to come up with something for the side "B". Bob asked what the name of the song was, George had no idea, but a box in the garage had a sticker that read, "Handle with Care". That is what George replied with, the group came up with the lyrics, and George took it to the record company. They said, "This was too good for a side "B". So they went back to Bob's house and decided to make a new group called "The Travelling Wilbury's" and recorded most of the rest of the first record. The final recordings were moved to George's house in England. They only had about a week to finish it as Bob was scheduled to go on a tour. So they wrote and recorded one song each day until the album was completed. The result was "The Traveling Wilbury's Part 1". After the recording of the album, and before the release of the second video, Roy died, which is why on the second video, there was a rocking chair with Roy's guitar whenever Roy had a solo on the song. RIP Roy, George, and Tom. The greatest supergroup will be again some day soon.

A city guy asked a farmer why his cow didn't have any horns. The farmer replied that some breeds simply don't have horns also that if a cow got mean they would trim off the horns to keep from getting hurt. 'However', he said, ' the reason this particular cow doesn't have horns is that it is a horse.' ...........I'll show myself out now.......

Yep true, Bob Dylan and his harp! The sheer talent in this one song is mind blowing. I remember when this came out, it was huge and I made sure to get all the albums. 😎 Unfortunately Roy Orbison passed in the midst of their work... the video for their song End of the Line is both heartbreaking and filled with hope. You are on FIRE man! I love that you're not covering the same songs all the other reactors are jumping on. THANK YOU! 🤟🏻

Do “End of the Line” by the Travelin’ Wilburys. While they were recording, Roy Orbison died suddenly. In the video, they play his recorded voice and guitar, and the camera goes to an empty rocking chair with Orbison’s guitar on it!!

Roy died shortly AFTER the album’s full recording and release. He got to see its success and climbing of the charts before he passed.
End If The Line was the second single released. And yes, since he was no longer around to appear in the song’s video, his photo was used as a tribute.

The pin should go into Malibu, California due to they were jammin' at Bob Dylan's studio the Shangri La , when George Harrison asked the group of friends to help him write a B-side to an album he was recording at the time. Info gathered from www.travelingwilburys.com/history and googled the address for studio which is now owned by Rick Rubin.

There is an interesting story about how this song came about. Long story, shortened version: George Harrison needed a "B" side for a single that was going to be released from his album (this was in the late 1980s). Jeff Lynne was working with Harrison as producer. They met for dinner and Roy Orbison was invited along. They were discussing using Dylan's recording studio and Orbison asked if he could watch. He thought it would be interesting. Harrison suggested that Roy assist with backing vocals if he was going to watch. Orbison said "Sure; I'll need to run by Tom [Petty's] and get my guitar." They told Petty what they were doing and he insisted on tagging along. Discussing the fact that they didn't even HAVE a song to record yet, there was a box in the garage at Dylan's home that said "Handle with Care." Tom Petty suggested that would be a great name for a song. I'm sure all five of them had a hand in wring they lyrics and the music, as they were all accomplished songwriters (some of the best in Rock and Roll, in fact); but this song clearly has Tom Petty's signature all over it. They style is very much consistent with Tom Petty's writing.
The song was recorded and sent to Harrison's record company for the "B" track, but the record company rejected it. They said it was "too good" to be lost to history as a B track on a single and they wanted more like it. So, they quickly put together some other songs and released the album
When the album was released there was nothing on the album that said who the artists were, but everybody knew. Between the stylized photo on the album cover and the distinctive voices of the artists, it was clear who made the record. "Handle With Care" was the first single released by the Wilburys, and it was a hit. It made quite a splash, but it didn't sound much like a lot of the other stuff on the charts at the time. All of us "old-timers" loved it, but it was ignored by the "under-20" crowd, for the most part.

You can imagine the producers and tech guys and those who put together this sort of thing were glad to work with this group. Every one of them a top notch professional, past his wild youth and knowing in their bones how things are done. Actually when they first formed up this group they intentionally hid who was in it. I dunno, trying to see if they could make a hit of it without their reputations preceding them I think. It didn't make a hit on the new music teeny bopper music lists but the old rockers jumped on that wagon quick.

Pretty much the Mt. Rushmore of Classic Rock. They didn't last long because Orbison died the year they release their first album. Their only other album was released after his death. Petty and Harrison are of course now also gone. If you want to see something epic: Harrison's posthumous induction into the R&R Hall of Fame, featuring Petty, Lynn, Steve Winwood, and a number of other major 70's rock musicians, with Prince delivering the guitar solo.
