Tom Petty said that while they were recording the album, at Dave Stewart's house by the way, "we all kept walking around the house telling each other, We're in a band with Roy Freaking Orbison"
They all had pseudonyms, Roy was Lefty Wilburry, the drummer was Buster Sidebury aka Jim Keltner, George was Nelson, Jeff was Otis, Tom was Charlie T. Wilburry Jr, and Bob was Lucky
Here's what Dylan had to say about Orbison in his autobiography: “I was always fishing for something on the radio. Just like trains and bells, it was part of the soundtrack of my life. I moved the dial up and down and Roy Orbison's voice came blasting out of the small speakers. His new song, "Running Scared," exploded into the room. Orbison, though, transcended all the genres - folk, country, rock and roll or just about anything. His stuff mixed all the styles and some that hadn't even been invented yet. He could sound mean and nasty on one line and then sing in a falsetto voice like Frankie Valli in the next. With Roy, you didn't know if you were listening to mariachi or opera. He kept you on your toes. With him, it was all about fat and blood. He sounded like he was singing from an Olympian mountaintop and he meant business. One of his previous songs, "Ooby Dooby" was deceptively simple, but Roy had progressed. He was now singing his compositions in three or four octaves that made you want to drive your car over a cliff. He sang like a professional criminal. Typically, he'd start out in some low, barely audible range, stay there a while and then astonishingly slip into histrionics. His voice could jar a corpse, always leave you muttring to yourself something like, "Man, I don't believe it." His songs had songs within songs. They shifted from major to minor key without any logic. Orbison was deadly serious - no pollywog and no fledgling juvenile. There wasn't anything else on the radio like him.”
I know right !! It was so great for Roy Im so glad he had those moments. He died before this was completed, He had a major come back thanks to Jeff Lynn
@@joleerinehardt2676 Roy didn't die before this was completed. The album, Volume 1, was released on 25 October 1988, and Handle with Care and the album were high in the charts when Roy passed on 6 December. Many of his last interviews had him expressing his joy at how well the Wilburys were being received.
Check out "Not Alone Anymore" from the Traveling Wilburys. Roy Orbison sings the lead vocal on the entire song and his voice soars on that one. The type of song that gives you goosebumps when you hear it!
The way Jeff Lynne tells it is that he and George Harrison had just had dinner at George's and were sitting around when George said 'we should start a group'. Jeff, thinking it was a bit of light hearted fun said OK who would you like to have in it, so they started throwing names around. To Jeff's astonishment the following day George said he had phoned them and they all said they were up for it. The Traveling Wilburys were born.
The songwriting process for this one began with the boys sitting around a room with some boxes on the side and one had “Handle With Care” on it. I think it was George who thought maybe he could work with that. Guys like that could write a song about just about anything ! My favorite TW song is “End of the Line” with it’s fine official video. They had so much fun working together !
This album always brings happy tears to my eyes. My dad was a huge huge Roy Orbison fan. He was a child of the depression, so he was never a follower of the other four artists. It made me happy when he discovered the Traveling Wilburys through his love of Roy Orbison’s music. He then allowed himself to open up to Misters Dylan, Harrison, Petty, and Lynne. My dad died 24 years ago. I always think of him whenever I hear the Wilburys
End of the line video always makes me tear up when they show an empty chair for Roy who passed away before the video could be made 💔 😢 Rip Roy , George, and Tom 🙏♥️
Definitely the whole album! You won't regret it. So many great songs come from The Traveling Wilbury's! How could they not, just look who's doing it, some of the best music icons EVER!
The respect these men had for each other shows in their performance. None are hogging the limelight. Knowing that the ins and outs will compliment each other.
They created a whole backstory for these characters that is funny and consistent. They are the five sons, by different mothers, of Charlie Wilbury, the original "traveling" Wilbury.
Yes it's Jim Keltner on drums... Top session musician and friend of George, John and Ringo...George and Roy took the lyrics and then they all piled in on harmonies. I promise you will like all the tracks on the album... Keep on Rocking.
One of my favorite Traveling Wilburys' songs, my next favorites is "End of The Line" recorded after the death of Roy Orbison as a tribute to him. There is a cameo of Roy in the video, see if you pick up on it. Thanks for the reaction to a band made up of rock/folk legends, amazing!
It should be noted, the song End Of The Line was recorded in the studio with Orbison, however the video wasn't recorded until after 'Lefty's' untimely passing. I'm sure that's what you meant, just wanted to clarify. Also: Nelson Wilbury (George Harrison) Otis Wilbury (Jeff Lynne) Lefty Wilbury (Roy Orbison) Charlie T. Wilbury, Jr. (Tom Petty) Lucky Wilbury (Bob Dylan) Greatest supergroup of all time, hands down!
Beautiful song. Right in the middle I was struck with a searing note of sadness, for the knowledge we've already lost 3 of these 5. These 5 literally represent the music of my life. Roy Orbison began making it big while I was a toddler, Harrison with the Beatles came across the Atlantic when I was 6, Bob Dylan is the poet of the sub-generation ahead of me, so all three of them have been around my whole life. Then, when I was in high school and the Beatles had broken up, Jeff Lynne and the Electric Light Orchestra burst onto the scene, and a few years later when I was managing a head shop/record store at age 19 this new album came out by a group called Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers that blew disco off the top of the album charts. Music of my life, man. Thanks again.
YES! Do the whole album! Promise….You will love every song!!!!! However I agree that “End of the Line”… the official video as a tribute to Roy….. you just have to see it and hear it!!! Please!!!! You will be blown away….
The Traveling Wilburys was such a nice surprise and a gift. We got to see a great conglomeration of old and newer voices come together and jam. Yes, Roy's beautiful vocals are so recognizable, and the cherry on top of the sundae. What a treat!
Do the WHOLE THING! All the tracks may not achieve what this one does but when you're comparing diamonds w diamonds....the genius just shows!! You'll get what you'd expect from these guys!!❤❤❤
The contrasting vocals of each singer blend in perfectly. George is great understated lead, Roy’s on another level with his melodic voice, Tom & Bob’s ragged vocals are a perfect foil and Jeff’s high backing singing make them a super singing group.
Roy’s last album, Mystery Girl, (released posthumously) was produced by Jeff Lynne and included contributions by Petty (and the other Heartbreakers) as well as Harrison and even Bono and The Edge wrote one of the songs. It’s a brilliant, gorgeous album.
Jim Keltner on drums aka Buster Sidebury. One of the best in rock history and played with many of the greats including all of the Beatles except Paul..
Roy and George go way back. I saw them on the same bill in 1963 in England. In those days there were things called package tours where a number of acts would play a short 20 minute to half hour set. Roy Orbison was headlining because he was the bigger star but halfway through the tour, 'Beatlemania' took off and they had to switch to the Beatles topping the bill. As far as I recall ( it was sixty years ago ! ) Roy was fine with that.
There is a documentary on the making of.. Tom was to solo after Roy and was like, oh great - will anyone sound good going after Roy! They all were like Roy was a monster to follow, so the duet of Tom and Bob came in! LOL. Great reaction. ❤
The whole album is stellar and alot of fun. Used it in the car with my kids for road trips to the mountains, lakes coast, camping. Brings good memories to me.
RIP, George Harrison, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison. Through writing and performing, often about personal hardship, you made everyone else's life a little brighter.
I saw either a documentary about making the album, or a behind-the-scenes video of these guys practicing and getting their harmonies right, etc. At one point they were trying to get Bob Dylan to sound like he used to. Jeff Lynne actually started to impersonate the "old" Dylan to try and show Bob how they wanted him to sound. It was funny.
5 guys getting together and enjoying themselves, all talented in their own right, sometimes called THE supergroup which I agree , they just wanted to play music together, no egos.
Hate that three of these guys are gone but yeah, this was special. Have their CD box set, lots of more to their music and they have some fun videos to go along with them.
The Traveling Wilburys is a rock supergroup from 1988, made up of Roy Orbison, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, & Jeff Lynne. They had a lot of great songs such as "End Of The Line", "Heading For The Light", "Inside Out", "Tweeter & The Monkey Man", "Dirty World", "Last Night", "She's My Baby", "Rattled", "Nobody's Child", "Congratulations" etc. Sadly only 2 guys are now left from this group (Bob Dylan & Jeff Lynne).
First time watching your reaction, how sweet you are, loved how you enjoyed these talented musicians! This was my time and I loved it but sad never to be created again!
It's interesting to note that the country and western answer to the Traveling Wilbury's was the Highwaymen. With Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson. Love the Highwayman song about reincarnation.
Everyone thought these were a bunch of old geezers when it came out but it was good stuff. Roy was the oldest at 52. I’m now older than that and they were NOT old! They were magnificent!
Jeff Lynne sometimes performs this song during his concerts and sometimes he's had George Harrison's son, Danny, join him on stage to play the song with him. Danny's voice sounds a lot like his father.
One of my absolute favorite groups ever, soooooo much talent - and they had so much fun just "messing about" and playing music together (for a short time). We are all blessed for it.
Great reaction Salvo! I distinctly remember when this came out, and I LOVED it! My mom was a HUGE Roy Orbison fan, I was big into The Beatles, ELO & Tom Petty...this was just THE supergroup of ALL supergroups!! This song always makes me happy! I would indeed do the entire album - 10 songs, each member is featured on two of them. Highlights: End Of The Line (video was done after Roy's passing), You're Not Alone (Roy's song!!), Last Night (Tom's song), Tweeter & The Monkey Man (Dylan's song), Rattled (Jeff Lynne)...for starters - or just do the whole thing in order - Handle With Care was track 1. Sad to think, only two Wilbury's remain...Bob & Jeff. RIP Roy, George & Tom!
People forget that George and Roy performed in 1962 when the band George was in opened for Roy's British tour. The next year Mick Jaeger and his band was Roy's opening act in Australia.
Just awesome! Do the whole album. But the video for End of the Line honors Roy Orbison. Another supergroup I don't see many people talk about is The Firm. Anyone remember them?
What a combination , how could it possibly get any better ??!!?? While listening to this song , I am smiling on the outside and crying on the inside . I can not explain why this song touches me so deeply . All I can say is that , when the song ends , I feel cleansed , and I am left drying my face .
Not interested in TV tonight, so here I am binging your channel for the past (over) three hours. It's been fun since I first tuned in a month or so ago, watching you laugh, cry, and get all excited, sharing your joy with us.
*Hell yeah Salvo, now you've stumbled upon greatness!!!!!* There have been very few real super groups in Rock over the decades for one reason....EGO. This is a prime example of what can happen when superstars band together, set aside the egos, and focus on the music. In my opinion the greatest super group since Cream and CSNY. Keep digging, this album is full of gems. My favorites being Last Night and Tweeter And The Monkeyman. ✌ Peace ✌
So much agree. I remember when all the pop stars got together for ... I don't remember the cause, off the top of my head, but I think they called it USA for Africa. Anyhow, they SAID they'd all "check their egos at the door" but that didn't always happen. These guys, though, they really did.
First time watching your videos, and let me tell you that your reaction was pretty awesome, you recognized the greatness of these men immediately after each intervention, very good taste!!! Yes, the harmonies at the beginning are from Tom and Bob, then also Jeff gets in, and the drummer is Jim Keltner, another master on his own. Videos are only 7, this one, 'End of the Line' which I would vote to be next, 'Not alone anymore', 'Runaway', 'Inside Out', 'She's my baby' and 'Wilbury Twist', anyway the two albums are quite good and worth to listen.
You do need to listen to the whole album, they each are featured. But most of all, you have to listen to "End of the Line," like right away! Just trust me. I just watched the video again just now and am bawling.
LUUUUUUV the Traveling Wilburys! It was so fun to watch these guys get together and make up this whole "persona" for their "family". ...Within the group, the other guys called Roy Orbison "The Voice".
That song is just so joyful. 5 masters, amazing. It's funny because you wouldn't think they'd gel with Roy since he's from a different era/genre but it worked so well. The damn thing makes me smile.
No, I think the best track is "End Of The Line. As it was released after Roys death but with him on it, they represented him with a chair with his guitar on.
Of course, You realize just who these people are....Epic history of rock and roll history
Tom Petty said that while they were recording the album, at Dave Stewart's house by the way, "we all kept walking around the house telling each other, We're in a band with Roy Freaking Orbison"

Though this was recorded at Dylan's garage studio before the album sessions.

Next should be “End of the Line.” The video was shot after Roy Orbison’s passing. The way they acknowledge and honor him is sweet and classy.
I still cry every time I see that video
made me cry but I loved it / love Roy Orbison
Totally agree.
Man, that moment when Roy's voice comes in for the first time. Bliss.
AGREE

They were in a garage according to some videos Ive got about Roy Orbison , They would rehearse at Pettys and Harrisons homes . Also Bob Dylans
I love The Wilburys!! A perfect supergroup.
I could not agree more!!! 💯💯🎤🎧📻🪗🎸🎹🎻🎙🎶🎵🎼
A beyond super legendgroup even.
@@0okamino true!!
Most supergroups breakup because of ego. This group came about because of no ego but good people enjoying making music together.
The ultimate 'super-group'. Never another one like it. God rest Tom, George and Roy 💔 💔 💔

I love George Harrison. Btw, in his childhood photo that's shown, he is holding his first guitar.

Showing my age a bit here, I remember when this hit MTV. Great song.
I’ll do you six or seven better, I bought Roy’s album ‘In Dreams’ when it came out in the 60’s.
Tom and Bob did indeed harmonize beautifully. Not such a surprise. Even in their solo careers, Tom often sounds like he's singing like Bob.
Ive always thought that 😃
They clearly had so much fun making this record. It comes through in every track.
Have to do End Of The Line by them.
Roy’s last album, Mystery Girl, (released posthumously) was produced by Jeff Lynne and included contributions by Petty (and the other Heartbreakers) as well as Harrison and even Bono and The Edge wrote one of the songs. It’s a brilliant, gorgeous album.
Loved it . Mystery Girl the song written by Bono and sung by Roy Orbison featured in AQUA MAN so good
I love the baby pictures!
They all look so happy. Just having a great time playing together with no pressure or egos.
A great song from great musicians. I really love this.!

Sweet!!!
So much emotion in Roy's voice, none left for his expression.
ICONS ! SOME OF THE GREATEST EVER

It's said thathe Beatles hated it, imagine having to follw Roy
I remember well....Odeon Manchester 1963 ....my spaceship must have gone into overdrive !!!
It blows my mind that the Wilburys even exist. They're all legends in the truest sense of the word.
There is a documentary on the making of.. Tom was to solo after Roy and was like, oh great - will anyone sound good going after Roy! They all were like Roy was a monster to follow, so the duet of Tom and Bob came in! LOL. Great reaction. ❤
Roy's smile when they say "the sweet smell of success"... amazing!!
End of the line should be the next song from these guys.
“End of the Line”
Tweeter and The Monkey Man is my favorite song.
Volume I was excellent; 5 extremely talented artists together it doesn’t get much better
All of them!
Jeff Lynne played the drums on that one track. Jim Keltner on the rest of them. Jim is also the one who appears in the video.

The drummer, Buster Sidebury, is legendary Jim Keltner.
All of them. 😅😅

It's interesting to note that the country and western answer to the Traveling Wilbury's was the Highwaymen. With Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Willie Nelson. Love the Highwayman song about reincarnation.
Jim Keltner on drums
Is it not funny that the Beatles opened for Roy Orbison when he was touring England in the early 60s! Iconic group!!
Everyone thought these were a bunch of old geezers when it came out but it was good stuff. Roy was the oldest at 52. I’m now older than that and they were NOT old! They were magnificent!
Classic album.
A true super group
This was done by a Beatle for a Beatle.
It's like George as a musical van Gogh painting a picture with these voices.
Jeff Lynne sometimes performs this song during his concerts and sometimes he's had George Harrison's son, Danny, join him on stage to play the song with him. Danny's voice sounds a lot like his father.
Thank you for this one. I love love LOVE the Traveling Wilburys. Deeply. Madly. Truly.
A bunch of classic singers
Absolutely love Harrison's slide guitar pieces!
Roy is built different ? - wait until you hear him sing 'Not alone any more' with the Wilburys. Stunning.
One of my absolute favorite groups ever, soooooo much talent - and they had so much fun just "messing about" and playing music together (for a short time). We are all blessed for it.
End of the Line and
Congratulations

Last Night
Do the whole thing
Was the best times of my life!!!! I used to love The Traveling Wilburys❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
RIP George, Roy, and Tom😢😢😢😢
End of the line , fantastic music ❤
End of the line is a good one. RIP to Tom, Roy and George total legends
He has a very smooth voice
Great reaction Salvo! I distinctly remember when this came out, and I LOVED it! My mom was a HUGE Roy Orbison fan, I was big into The Beatles, ELO & Tom Petty...this was just THE supergroup of ALL supergroups!!

Sad to think, only two Wilbury's remain...Bob & Jeff. RIP Roy, George & Tom!
My favorite super group. That Harrison pace and that slide is magical.
End of the Line is another Traveling Wilbur’s good song. There are a lot of behind the scene’s home videos of the Traveling Wilbur’s.
This is the definition for Supergroup!!
A supergroup born out the real love of music of 5 legends just wanting to get together and jam.
What a combination , how could it possibly get any better ??!!?? While listening to this song , I am smiling on the outside and crying on the inside . I can not explain why this song touches me so deeply . All I can say is that , when the song ends , I feel cleansed , and I am left drying my face .

End of the Line was a hit
The entire album is excellent! "End of the line" Official video would be a good choice for your second listen.
Roy Orbison had the most beautiful voice.............it was such a tragedy that he passed so soon after this..........

One of my fave songs of all time. So glad you found this one.
"End of the Line" is a banger from the Wilburys
I know exactly what you mean about Roy's voice hitting differently. Gives me chills and makes my heart swell.
No, I think the best track is "End Of The Line. As it was released after Roys death but with him on it, they represented him with a chair with his guitar on.
Great tune an band that just don't ever get old.👍🏻
