Very informative video! Im trying to diagnose if I have an issue with my lower drive but I can't figure this out... If you pull up on the prop, it moves up and down about an 1/8th of an inch. Is this normal? Same thing with the spline that connects to the upper unit. New to boating so now sure what to think of it or if I'm just driving myself crazy
Good morning, just poured a cup of coffee and am sitting down to answer any and all questions for the DIY community. Great question and your prop shouldn’t have that much play. Did you experience vibration or shaking when outdrive was in gear? If so, that’s due to the 1/8” movement. Please keep us posted. 😎👍
@@DIYwithMichaelBorders thank you for getting back to me! Yes there was a vibration and a slight squeel/whistle when taking off. The vibration would be even more pronounced when turning left or right. I left it to the ujoints and bearing being exposed to water being that the bellow boot was torn so I'm in the process of rebuilding that. You think it's the gears on the inside or prop shaft, etc?
@@AlBo4LiF3 Thanks for the reply, hard to say until opening it up and inspecting. Aggressive vibration due to loose or damaged internal parts is never good however if you’re faced with a lower unit rebuild…you’ll benefit greatly from it in the end. 😎👍
Thanks for the vid! Subscribed to see all the alpha one outdrive stuff) Resealed mine just yesterday, but it's better to know the whole disassembly process.
@@unisuit Thanks for watching, you will need to remove bearing carrier from lower unit to inspect gears and bearings. As far as the upper, you do have the top cap that can be removed to inspect the internal yoke shaft gear as well as the vertical gear and it’s bearing. You can do each of these while outdrive is still connected to transom. 🧰
Thanks for watching, we appreciate that. Thank YOU for sharing this. Are you referring to the wrench used to remove Pinion gear nut or tool to remove bearing carrier retainer nut? Awesome video! I'm working with the exact lower unit as the one in the video... I got the drive shaft out to swith to a shorter one... accidentally tapped the lower needle bearing and a few fell out. I don't see any other way to get them back in without pulling the prop shaft out... but at this point I can't seem to get it to actually slip passed the shifter.... any ideas? Seems like it's in neutral. But just doesn't slide out like your video... any help is appreciated

Yea I thought about pulling the shift shaft but I didn't know if it would help me... once the shaft is pulled I'm guessing that lower tab will stay in place... you think go that direction eh? I wish I could just reset the needles somehow... hands are not an option. Lol
@@victorsjakovs8596 Definitely understandable. Maybe grab a magnetic extender tool and trying to grab dropped pin. The problem you could run into is the magnetic extender accidentally pulling additional needles out of housing…🤔
