Thanks for doing this video, as I have been stuck with the same problem. Unfortunately I couldn’t get the round nut out as easy as you! But that’s another story. I couldn’t figure out why it happened until you mentioned the seals, I now understand the how now the next is finding the parts which are becoming rarer in Australia. Most appreciated it.
I have been assisting my neighbour with his 50 hp Mercury and when he bought the secondhand boat, the leg had been already removed. The motor was complete. He assumed that the previous owner had removed it to replace the impeller. The drive shaft and prop shaft were seized solid. I drained the leg and more water came out than gear oil! I removed the round nut which was seized by using a dremel tool to cut the ring and I’m just about to remove the prop shaft. I expect with all the water it’s probably a write off and he’ll have to buy a reconditioned leg, but I’ll get it apart anyway first. Thanks for your response, I appreciate it.
I would love to have you put my old 74 merc 650 lower unit back together. What would cause my main driveshaft that goes into powerhead not to spin. With the prop shaft and internals removed? Love your videos.
@@MerCSonL6 oh thank you. I did took it out and found out that the plastic nut is stripped so when your put in reverse. It push the nut right out so it won’t go into reverse, the spring is so stiff that it pushes right it out. Also no keys on the gear shaft. Thank you for the reply. Much appreciated
Not sure what you mean. To seal the prop shaft you need 2 seals. One to keep the oil in and 1 to keep the oil out. No, you will not be able to see the serial number if installed correctly. Son
Hi great video just a question i have a 210 Quintrex legend center console boat with a 60 hp Mercury engine i think its a bigfoot its hard to shift in to gear i have taken control cables off and it shifts smoothly so must be at the engine end any ideas i can do to make it change smoother thank you
Great video as always. There’s one thing I don’t understand however. When I try to use a puller like the one you got, I can’t seem to keep it centered on the top of the prop shaft. As soon as I start applying enough pressure and the chains get taut, the threaded puller shaft will start bending to one side and after a while it slips off the top of the prop shaft. How do you keep it straight/level while tightening it down?
@@MerCSonL6 Nah mate, it’s not that. They are the same length alright, and the puller is not leaning “left or right” but rather “backward and forwards” , ie in the two directions where the chains aren’t attached (it’s a two-armed puller).
And how far or tight should my thrust washer be on reverse gear should it be snug I'm going to go through your videos I'll be watching your play list one by one hehheeh
can you help me out Merc Force 40 go's into R but no Fwd says needs top mounts replaced? is this expensive to replace. what else can cause it not to go into FWD
I enjoy your videos. Thanks for making them. They inspired me to work on my Mercury. It's a '87, 90 HP that I got from a friend that was headed to the trash. It was seized. But compression is good. I un-seized it with Sea Foam and have been taking apart the lower unit with the intention of replacing gaskets, bearings and rings. Thanks, for your tip on removing the bearing casing. I got that off with a make-shift puller but I can't get the propeller shaft out. Any suggestions? The gears appear to be in neutral. Drive shaft and propeller shaft turn. Thrust washer seems fused to casing. I have applied heat to the outer lower unit casing but with no luck.
@@MerCSonL6 Thanks for your quick reply! I got the propeller off: no problem. Trying to get the propeller shaft out to check out gears. Basically, trying to disassemble lower unit to make sure all gears are good, nothing is damaged by rust or wear, and replace everything that requires it and lubricate everything appropriately. In your video on the three lower units, it looked liked the propeller shaft comes out relatively easily (after releasing the bearing casing). Another issue is the shifter doesn't seem to engage gears. I've taken it out but can't seem to see a problem. But I am hoping to figure out that problem once I can get the propeller shaft out. Any suggestions are appreciated with getting the propeller shaft out. Thanks.
@merCSon L6 i have an mercury 850 and it runs fine on the flusher but when you put it in gear it just bogs and dies.. I cleaned carbs and changed spark plugs at no avail. I was thinking a link and sync and a fuel pump diaphram. Your thoughts? Its the coil pack motor
Sounds like its not getting enough fuel or needs a link and sync. Make sure you do not have any air leaks from the tank to carbs. Can also try turning each carb 1/4 turn out (together) to richen up the mixture. Let me know. Son
i have a 150 optimax 1999..when i took out the bearing carrier the prop shaft stay there ,do i need to take out the shift rod to let the shaft coming out?? my shaft its bent and i need to change it,,

There can be many different reasons for your issue. We'll start with the "easy" first and work into the engine. Check the fuel lines and make sure there are no leaks. Verify that the fuel pump is working correctly. Timing will also need to be verified. Your primary pickup should be hitting the carb cam around 4-6 BTDC. Turn all 3 idle screws 1/4 turn ccw. Try and let me know if this helps. Son
Thanks for replying I found out it had a gas leak in a fuel hose now it idles just fine and doesn't shut off I did notice that it grinds when I put it into gear
Remove lower and position shift anchor by the bottom left bolt on the exhaust Baffle cover. Manually put lower in neutral (prop should spin freely). Reinstall lower. Son
Hey Bobby own a 2010 mercury 60hp just recently my wife drove in a very sholloq water which sucked in a lot of mud etc. max mph I go was 20 mph not until about 5 attempts in getting started. I was changing my water pump on a 78 35hp evinrude and the driveshaft popped out. Now I cannot completely seat it back into the gearcase.
Gearcase might be stripped. Not what you want to hear but the crown nut should tighten the carrier. Son

number 9 wrench to work gear forward or reverse. I tried metric and US wrench. none fitted. Suggestion?
Vise grips. Son
My bearing carrier won't come out at all. I did the same trick as you. Idk if because you do fresh water boats or what? I use my boat on salt water.
Salt water destroys engines. Keep pulling, it will come out. Heat may need to be applied to loosen. Son
can you help me out Merc Force 40 go's into R but no Fwd says needs top mounts replaced? is this expensive to replace. what else can cause it not to go into FWD
Who said mounts need replaced? Top mounts have nothing to do with shifting.
Does anyone know what the part # is for the bearing carrier?
My 300r is a 2022. My shaft is ceased with transmission in reverse only. It is an electronic shifter What do I need to do?
Wires are crossed. Perhaps corrosion. Identify the issue. Son
Why not replace the bearing instead of the whole carrier?
Great idea. At the time I did not have extra bearings in my inventory. Just the carrier. Son
Would you be interested in taking mine Apart...think its locked up case is banged up...bondo on side....its junk ..maybe can make video out of it..
