      I agree! Like I said, it's gonna take awhile, but you can just work on another printer instead of risk the mess and spill. Worth it to me for sure once I start getting involved in the bigger printing again.

      I’m currently 3D printing peristaltic pumps for a different project but I guess I can make one more. Another idea that came to mind was to make an automatic vat refill system with an arduino.

    Ah yes this is a genius idea, I don't print resin for months at a time and just had to empty the Mega 8K's almost FULL vat yesterday. Gonna source one right now lol

      Isn't that the way it goes? Fill the vat with real optimism and then... failure that requires you empty a vat with 1L of resin @.@ Hope this helps! Might have better luck with a bigger pump to help suction faster.

    I think you're missing the bigger use of these pumps, for the reverse! FILLing your vats with resin especially coupled with a smart switch (just on/off) or with an Arduino for large format you'd never have to worry about an empty vat mid print!

      There might be a mechanical solution like the archimedian principle where it will autofill by pressure difference by itself.

    This is an absolute game changer!!! I have a very small workspace set up in my laundry room for better ventilation, and having a pump to minimize the mess when cleaning up between prints will be awesome! Thank you for this!

    Peristaltic pumps are incredibly useful. I used to use them in graduate school to make Percoll gradients. Fantastic suggestion for use.

    Strange, I see peristaltic pumps almost every day at work and yet I'd never considered this. Thanks for the tip.
    As for something to hold the tube, consider a swing out clip mounted to the hold down clamps.

      This is EXACTLY how I felt when Grant suggested the idea casually on that Twitter thread! It was really cool to try it and see it work on something other than clear solution in a lab or something.

      Pick up a box of bulldog clips from the office supply store for a couple bucks. They hold securely and you can slip the tubing through the handles to hold it in your funnel.

      I tried looking up the Arduino kits you mentioned and they were almost all more expensive (or just cheaper). That's actually why I tried the more expensive one first!

    I wonder if you could design a tray that has a resin return that you could attach to the pump's hose.
    For that matter, add a float switch and have it automatically refill if it gets low, like the stuff from FormLabs.

      I came here to say this^^ you could have with a sensor to check the amount of resin remaining in the vat between layers and a sensor at the top of the tray to make sure any resin doesn't overflow when the print goes back in displacing more resin there could also be a a way have motorized lift in a corner opposite to the return pump tube that lifts the tray just enough to allow most of the resin to flow towards the mouth of the pump tube....

      I just ordered my first 3d printer 3 days ago, will have to cnc some hose connector in the tray, I also have a peristatic pump laying around... Will mount the pump inside the enclosure. I'll have to look up "capacitive sensors", there should be something around (and second mod on the tray needed). An ESP32 for driving the pump back and forth, the sensor, and BT or wifi access...
      Just need to tilt the whole printer slightly, will call it my "Pisa Tower printer".
      BTW: why wasn't that invented before?

    I got one of those a month ago for my printer. I’ve used types that let you use one solid hose, so I can have one for resin, one for water, one for IPA, but I still prefer it.

    Looks great. On a side note, I use masking tape on my vats to mask as many surfaces as possible. Makes clean up really easy. I also put masking tape on the edge and to of my build plate.

    Danny, This is a great idea that has spawned possibly an even greater idea. I hate removing or adding as well. So my background is in mechanical engineering. and you messing with this pumping system has got me thinking.
    I will often leave my resin in the vat for days. or even when you have long prints. I notice the resin really likes to separate, and settle. This pump system could be done as a full time recirculation pump. always keeping the resin in the vat in a better mix. you could add an inline filter to the lines, and constantly remove possible particulate. the filter would work as a mixer as well. You could also add a second line to the input side, with valve to add resin as well as valves on the output side to empty. the hoses could be mounted into the vat on either side to create the flow, just would need some 3D printed clips. or for those with some machining abilities. threaded pipe nipples. I think you would want to get the hoses as low in the vat as possible....
    Heck, some very cleaver Electrical Engineering guys could even make this type of system with a level sensor and solenoid valve system that would pull resin directly from a bottle and maintain a constant level of resin in a vat. A little more electrical knowledge and that could add a flow meter to the output and tell you when the filter is plugged, level is too low, etc.
    Dual purpose system ,recirculation, empty fill.

    Great idea. Will try it. Thoughts on possible improvement: Instead of having the resin pass the pump, I would try to use it to underpressurize the target container and sucking the resin in there („suction trap“). By having one dedicated, short hose (at least for the most often used resins) for that, one might not have to clean as much for the next resin, and thus less resin would have to be wasted.

    On the topic of resin printing, maybe you could make a video on your resin printing workflow. The precautions you take to keep things clean and keep resin from getting everywhere. As well as what tools you have on hand for normal use and emergency situations.

    I think it could come in handy for emptying the cleaning tank back in to bottles as well, but i would want a float switch that prevents over filling because i know i couldn't pay attention for that long. I guess it might work to clamp the hose so it doesn't go to deep in the tank as well.

    for small vats I recommend 100ml syringe to hand pump the resin. No dangly bits of tubes and wires on the table.

    Use some milliput around the tubing close to the end - you could easily mold it around the tube and push it into the screw on the vat (just get the imprint, don't cement it to your screw)- the weight would hold down the tubing, and it could rest on the screw to stabilize. A wad around the other end could easily have a paperclip inserted in as well, to hang on to your funnel.

    I was skeptical about the use of this pump when I first got it, at first all it did was add extra steps and cleanup. However, I found the perfect use for it when I filter alcohol. It's great at decanting the alcohol while leaving the nasty gunk I'm trying to filter at the bottom.

    Ahhh we in the aquarium industry use these as dosing pumps for slowly auto dosing supplements into our tanks over time to maintain the water / nutrient chemistry in them for plants and corals. Cool!!

    Got my first resin printer on order. I wonder if someone could scan the vat then modify it to have a threaded hole in one of the lower corners that you could fit a small needle valve into. You could design the opening of the hole so that it looks like a funnel that tapers towards the fep. Then just squeegee towards that corner to get most out. TH-cam what say you? Oh and then print the new ported vat on the same printer? Would it fit? 🤔 depending on the Thickness of the vat , you might be able to curve part of the hole down below the surface of the fep for a lil gravity feed action. .. OK I'm feeling a new project coming on.

      That is exactly how the thread started with @Uncle Jessy and @3DMusketeers. I said “Man, I WISH I had something that did this!” (It was the reverse of an automatic re-filling VAT like some of the bigger resin printers have). Sure enough, Grant said: “That sounds like a peristaltic pump could do that!” Bingo - he was right. :)

    The amount of resin you had in the vat is not what I would normally have left after a print has completed, I usually only have a few mm depth of resin left after a print and pouring it into a filter+ funnel is not a problem as everything is contained within a deep tray to contain any spills, which are rare, my biggest problem is forgetting I have gloves on that have resin on the fingers and then go and touch things and mark them with resin

    I use a cheap rigid cookie sheet from Walmart lined with blue shop paper towels to transfer from printer to wash station. I'd say I'm 98% successful not getting drips everywhere. This pump idea is intriguing.

    i think the trick would be to have it attached to the vat. cycling and moving the resin i think would be good but i dont know. scrapers and tilting beds are a thing so i figure it might be good. but you could also use this to run the resin through a heating loop. some resins need to be heated to print well so that would be super beneficial. a couple of valves could easily let you set the pump to "drain" instead of loop.

    Tank Inkjet Printers have an inline peristaltic pump to dump the waste paint into the waste container. You can reuse those by trilling a few holes and adding a DC motor directly to the gears

    You need a tip like that steam cleaners use to draw up a wider area of resin rather than needing to grab you scrapper. It should be wide like 2 scraper blades with a narrow slit between them and tapering to the hose.

    Can I add on here some of this can be automated with a jig pushing the vat to one side and you could totally put an in line filter on there not to mention there's already designs out there to print peristaltic pumps then all you need to buy is the hardware for that a few screws and a motor that would also solve the speed problem too

    The benefit of curing that first layer is not having to work bits off the fep

    It's funny how we tend to think in terms of modeling and printing a jig to hold it in place when a simpler solution would be to use something like a clothespin or binder clip. Lol

    Can you tilt the whole printer a bit, (with wedges for example) so the resin flows in one corner where it can be conveniently collected? This way you don't need to take out the vat - or do you need to recalibrate the printer after you move it?

    Have a small cup of IPA nearby to flush out the tubing when you’re finished. Then flush it again with some distilled water. Won’t have to worry about cross contamination if you’re using different resins.

    I like this idea. The one downside is the slow speed. 10 minutes for a Saturn means 15-20 for a Mega? There’s a whole variety of these pumps used for Aaquarium dosing and many are controllable with variable speed so do some research to find the fastest pump.
    To avoid the fire-hose issue, maybe design and 3d print a clip to hold the hose on the vat and another to hold it one the bottle - you could even incorporate something into a funeral to hold the hose. Again look into Aquarium equipment - there’s loads of clips and holders out there for dosing tubes and pumps.

    OK, my first printer, a resin printer, should be here in a few months and I am BRAND new to the hobby. This video makes me more than a bit nervous as I never realized this step existed. I have never seen a video of anyone that goes into what to do for clean up after a print. Made me realize there is an awful lot I do not know just getting started. Danny, do you have a video or series of vids for the complete beginner to resin printing (or any 3d printing for that matter) on how to setup to use their new resin printer for the first time, what all the steps are and what extra equipment I should have on hand before I start?

      uncle jessy might, orjust search. you NEED a respirator, nitrile gloves, paper towels, alchohol in a little spray bottle is very useful too, its a messy hobby. so waste disposal is big thing. and space. clear working space

    Could you use a silicone spatula as apossed to plastic scraper so you won't have to worry about scratching ptf film? I know people use silicone mats in resin printing. I just got a rresin 3D printer but haven't gotten any resin yet to start printing. Anyhow love you videos been watching since I got an ender 3 from watching your videos also still have it in the box lol big time procrastinating, lol any how thank for your videos gl.

    Look up fishtank suction cups. They might be able to hold the hose in place for you.

    I don't know the dimensions of the tubes, but I did a quick and VERY rough remix from a (longer 30) pour spout as a proof of concept up on tinkercad.

    Sound great! I'm a bit worried about the inner part of the hose. I imagine that those sticky resins (like Creality) will stay inside and get mixed with the next (transparent) resin. Do you have to clean it? That would create extra steps and maybe reduce the benefit of an easier handling.

      Cycling some isopropyl once you're done cleaning the vat should be a decent way to dilute and remove any problematic resin in the tubing. That being the case it would still be wise to change out the tubes every so often.
      In any case, I can't wait to give this a shot! I've had some peristaltic motors on hand for a few years with nothing to do until now!

    Maybe a titling table surface that tilts the whole printer slightly to a corner of the vat. Then clip the hose (3d filament printed of course) to the low corner.

    This can be actually resin auto-refill tool aswell? It can add always "fresh" stirred resin, plus heated pump would be convenient for cold days/garage environment.

      Someone suggested it combined with an Arduino. It's honestly a phenomenal idea IMO, I just don't have the tools to make it at the moment.

    That's a great idea.
    Especialy with the Mars 3 Vat being so terrible at pouring!
    But how do you clean the machine itself? don't you have a mess of sticky resin in the subes or the machine?
    Do you have it suck up some Ipa then water to clean it up?

    How do you prevent the resin from curing in the hose/pump? Completely cleaning it with IPA after each use seems to me more messy than cleaning vats the usual way.

      if you put the pump and tubes in a box or something then the resin will never cure. the only thing that cures resin is UV light. most modern windows block most UV light already, but putting it in a box is even better.

    I don't even have the resin printer yet, but if you are still using the peristaltic pump, just put something under one rear leg so the vat is tilted towards, say front left corner and print the tubing holder to install on the vat corner, so you don't have to move the resin around with spatula. This way you only have to wipe the vat after it's totally drained. Although I'd go with really big syringe, as used for horses, wrapped in black foil or shrink wrap black tubing, suck all the resin in one stroke and keep it there instead of bottle. Oops, I just saw your other thumbnail with syringe. But I'll leave the comment just in case..

    Could be used to auto clean Isopropyl alcool, siphoning the tub and passing it in a filter in the corner, as a fish tank cleaner.

      Cycle out some isopropyl alcohol through it all ya need to do. I filter between a dirty and clean Tupperware, but only when I'm done using it. Left it between days and no issues so far.

    What tubing do you use with it? I used the tubing that came with the pump and it is garbage. Hardly sucks any volume.

    Another thing to add would be some way to heat the resin to temperature. Resin is sensitive to temperature and print quality will depend on it.

    I have had this as a built in autofill feature for my slash printers for years. As amazing DIY is it has its blind spots. :P

      Not a problem just didn't know it was considered new?

    it was a bust but i think i got a bad pump, runs backwards from what it shows in the listing and and painfully slow... but love the idea! the wheels on the brain go round and round!
