It's been awhile since the video, but I believe it was a 1 ounce (30 ml) or a 2 ounce (60 ml). Please double check in the video because I specified the ounce amount. :-)
Thank you, Heidi, for the beautiful presentation. May I ask what size of the spray bottle you used in this video? 1 oz.? I enjoyed your teaching very much! Mei
Hello. Very good video. I am thinking of using this blend of essential oils in homemade beard wax. You talked about making a stock blend in the video. Can I make one (only using the essential oils) by using the ratio you use in this video to fill a 10ml och 20ml glass bottle, and then use that in the beard wax? And how many drops of the blend would you use in a can with 60ml beard wax?
Yes, you can do this with your stock blend. For 60 ml, I suggest starting with a 1% dilution, since it's so close to the nose. That would be 12 drops of the blend. Then you can adjust for more, if you feel like you need to. :-)
Hi Heidi! First time trying to make all natural mens cologne. Do you have other substitutes for Exactohol? It’s a little over my price range. I was hoping for a smaller bottle. Theres just way to many different variations on line thats confusing. Thank you! 😊
I love how you explain everything. I have a question, i have 1 0z of this oil mixture that smells amazing. I also have some perfume alcohol. How much perfume alcohol would I add to 30mls or 1 oz of oil? This is essentially a roll on oil cologne so its safe for skin, if that helps. Thank you in advance.
Thank you so much! I'm honestly not that familiar with perfume alcohol, so do some research on this, but it's likely you'd use the same dilution percentage as you would with high proof grain alcohol (195 proof), as I understand.
@HeidiVillegas yeah the perfumers alcohol I got is 200 proof so pretty much the same proof as you everclear. I've been trying to look around and I can't get a definitive answer. Everything is scattered. I appreciate the reply back.
This was an amazing video. I want to make a solid cologne with beezwax and coconut oil base. Would the same proportions of the top, middle, and base notes be suitable for this?
Hi Heidi, I loved your video it was the first one that popped up and I don’t even need to search for another. I did hear of others using 90 proof or 100 proof rum as their alcohol but does that fall under the same category as the vodka and Witch Hazel? Also I was thinking of making a blend for myself that was more on the fresh and airy side so what do you think of these oils I’m planning to use: Lime Lemongrass Vetiver Patchouli Frankincense Thanks again!
Hi, and thank you so much! Yes, the lower proof alcohols will fall under the same categories as vodka and W.H. You really do need the high proof alcohol. And, I just love the choices you've got there! Play around with the amounts---you'll know when you have a winner!
Love, love, love this video. Also see how passionate you are about it. My question to you is about Oakmoss. It is so honey like and I’m wondering how to correctly extract it because when I do, since it is so thick, I can’t tell how much I’m using while making my cologne. It seems like one drop is like 5 drops of a regular oil that isn’t so honey like. Does this make sense? For instance I want to make it a base note but I can’t accurately know if I’m putting 5 drops or not since it’s so thick. Any input would be great. Sorry for the run on here lol😂
Since it sounds like you're extracting your own (which is awesome), I suggest starting with very small amounts then adding more as needed. Let the combinations sit for several hours so you can get a sense of the final scent. :-) Good luck with that!
@@HeidiVillegas thank you so much for responding. One more question. How can I find black currant essential oil? I can only find fragrance oil which isn’t to make cologne correct?
Excellent video! How do I make a small business out of this fantastic idea? I am thinking "Farmer's Market". Also, what other "Recipes" for colognes-for-men are you willing to share? Marketing to women, they WILL want a selection to choose from!! I KNOW how expensive some of these Essential Oils can get! For the small spray-bottle shown & recipe shared, what would YOU sell this bottle for, for profit, of course?
Thank you, T! I think sprays like this would be GREAT at Farmer's markets and also online. I mainly make up the blends for family, friends, and clients, but I suppose I could make some more videos! As far as figuring out the cost, you'd need to figure out the per drop cost of the oils, then do the figuring from there. Then I suggest taking your total cost (including the bottle and the label) and doubling or tripling that amount so you make a little profit. :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Please! More recipes! You may not need a video; just how many drops of which oils! As sated, I think many of these oils will prove pricey! Experimenting could mean lots of (unavailable) dollars!
Would the ratio's of essential oils be the same if I'm making a solid cologne? I just made my first and I'm not super happy with it, I'm not really surprised though because I don't really know what I'm doing yet. I used beeswax and coconut oil as the base and added Douglas Fir, Cedarwood, Peppermint, Lemongrass, and Rosemary. It doesn't smell bad, it's just not what I was trying to go for
What is the total percentage of the combined essential oils for your 1 oz combination? Is it at 3%? I'm also wondering if the Cardamom Essential oil is like the Clove one as if so, it shouldn't be more than 0.5% of the total dilution of your 1 oz bottle. If so, how many drops would be allowed. Three drops just seemed to be a bit high for me but I could be mistaken.
It's been awhile since I made this video, but I might have figured for a 2 ounce bottle, then split into 1 ounces? I'll have to watch it again. But for colognes, I usually do a 2% to 3% dilution....never higher.
You could use witch hazel/water combination, but the essential oils won't be dispersed, and also it won't be preserved. To offset this, you could use a solubilizer (you can buy these commercially) and a preservative. :-)
Most of the chemical, bergapten, and other furanocoumarins are too heavy to be vaporized in the steam like other terpene molecules. So, to a great extent the phototoxicity is greatly reduced or completed gone with steam distillation.
Hey thanks for this video, i have a few questions, i don’t have cardamom and sandalwood can i replace cardamom with basil essential oil and sandalwood for cedar wood. Also i’m using a brand called PURA D’OR have you heard of it and is it good? Thanks a bunch again!
I haven't heard of Pura d'or. You can really substitute all kinds of essential oils. You'll just want to check that you enjoy the scent---so start with small amounts.
What a great video! Thank you so much Heidi! I’d also like to try this mix of scents on my wool balls that go in the dryer, without the Everclear, lol. Can I ask what size spray bottle did you use?
I'm so glad! That's great! You can find everclear in liquor stores and if your state doesn't allow the selling of 190 proof, you can buy it online. I usually suggest Organic Alcohol and Extractahol as I've heard good things about them.
I want to make my own Cologne collection and this is a good start thank you. My question about this is how many hours does it last and how far is the smell bubble so others can smell the sent
Good questions! I use a higher dilution than most colognes, and I'm going to guess the scent may last an hour or more-- this would also depend on the person using it, as some people retain scent better than others. The scent bubble will depend on how much is used---but you don't want people more than a foot or so away smelling it, really. :-)
I love your channel and have just recently seen it and subscribed. Can you confirm that the amber bottle you are using is a 2 oz bottle? It looks like it in the video. Thanks
Thank you, and welcome to the community! I made the video recipe for 2 ounces, but then ended up using a one ounce bottle for my dad. :-) You can adjust it for strength of scent to an extent. Just be careful of maximum dilution amounts for the specific essential oils. For example, a highly phototoxic oil like bergamot shouldn't be used at greater than 0.4% in a preparation. Just check all the safety for each EO, if you want different sizes. I hope this helps!
Hello Heidi, I've been planning to make my very first essential oil cologne, and I was just wondering whether its ok to just use one top note oil, one middle not oil, and one low note oil (like sweet orange, ylang ylang, and frankincense for example)
Thank you for this wonderful and comprehensive video. :) I'm new to this and I was wondering about adding other things. Would some carrier oil be beneficial? Wouldn't that improve the "staying power?" I suppose the addition of any water or witch hazel would defeat the purpose of using 95% alcohol. Thank you
There are several ways to make perfumes....you can certainly make a roller bottle or solid perfume style with the lipid oils. You could also make up the stock blend and use it at a 1% dilution in body lotion for layering, too.
Hi, Frank! Thank you! I purchase my oils from Starwest Botanicals, Aromatics International, Rocky Mountain Oils, Plant Therapy, Amrita Aromatherapy, Florihana, Pranayom, and Mountain Rose Herbs. I can definitely vouch for those companies.
Thank you for this information this is super helpful. Is it possible to make these perfumes using oils. I do not use or put any type of alcohols on my skin. Can I make this using an olive oil or grapeseed oil. Perhaps a roll-on perfume. Any suggestions would be wonderful thank you.
Perfumers alcohol is GREAT! It's just kind of hard to get, so I just go with the Everclear. I have to get mine from friends who live out of state because I can't get it shipped here. Or...I cross state lines into Oregon.
I tried this and need some advice on what to add to this to offset the Patchouli. My daughter said it smelled like BO, (because of the Patchouli) and requested that I do not give it to my husband. I don't want to waste all these great essential oils. I sorta like the smell of Patchouli, but some obviously do not! Is there another oil that you know about that might mask the Patchouli smell? I want this essential oil project to be a success and blessing to my husband.
Oh, dear! Well, one thing to consider and probably the most important thing: What does your husband think of patchouli? He's the one who needs to enjoy it! Also, it's not super powerful in this blend, so perhaps add more of the other oils to offset the amount of patchouli.
@@HeidiVillegas That's good advice, I should let him smell it before I alter anything. If I find I need to add more of the other essential oils, are there certain oils that would be wise to try increasing first, so I don't go overboard?
Not exactly, and this is because the heat burns off the essential oils very quickly. Do a little research on scenting candles before starting, and I would use less expensive oils, too. Good luck with it! :-)
Heidi Villegas Nice video, Im curious with this blend do you have to use alcohol?, I have seen people make oil blends with just the essential oil nothing else added.
Yes, it's best if you use the alcohol because it helps disperse the essential oils properly. It also preserves the cologne for a much longer time than just with water. Water sprays really should only be used for about a week without the proper amount of alcohol.
Hiii i wanted to ask how much ml is the little bottle because i am planning to make some using the same drops and everything. Pleaseee answer and thank you so much :)
If the top and middle notes evaporate quickly, seems to me by time you get where your going all that’s really left is the base scent, seems to me it’d be better to just focus on base mixes, but I grew up in the country in Texas so I’m used to things being an hr drive away, 🤷♂️ maybe yal city folks can make better use of top note’s since everything is close to you
LOL---NO city girl here, my friend! I'm VERY far from a city. That's so funny. There's not a mall within 3 hours of me, and our nearest decent grocery is an hour and a half. We grow almost all of our veggies and many of our herbs. I also distill essential oils and hydrosols from our plants. Do some research into perfumery---maybe I didn't explain well enough. Good luck to you!
I totally just realized the whole point of putting it in a small roller bottle is to take it with you and put it on when you get where your going and not at home lol I feel dumb now 🫣
I haven't had this experience---dry skin. But we're all different. One thing you can do to offset it is to substitute a tablespoon of the water with aloe vera gel. Shake well, and that will help a lot. You can also sub 1 tsp of water for vegetable glycerine, too.
If I recall (that video is a couple years old I think, now) that may have been a one ounce bottle, although I may have made the measurements for 2 ounces....you may need to have another listen. I was probably using Boswellia sacra, although any of them would be fine to use for fragrance. I know some perfumers like B. carterii best.
You would most likely change the dilution of the essential oils to a 20% to 40% and that's REALLY high. You'd definitely need to check the safety of the maximum dilution levels of each of the components to be sure it remains in the skin safe range.
You could make a roller bottle perfume with fractionated coconut oil (which is liquid), but not a spray. The best thing to do if you're not sure about a scent if to take the lids of the essential oils and place them in your palm. Smell them together, and you'll get a sense if the combination will work. :-) Good luck!
Oh, gosh---those two would be so great all on their own, but a fixative (base) would be a good idea. This is a personal decision, but I bet patchouli would be nice, or sandalwood.
@@HeidiVillegasI meant it more as a “carrier oil” I’ve read about it on a few sites. Would you recommend using it in a spray or is it something that wouldn’t mix with the alcohol? Sorry I’m new to this.
I used to make roller perfume using fractionated coconut oil. This oil never goes bad, and works great with essential oils.I find that it works better than jojoba oil in my case and is colorless.

@HeidiVillegas yeah the perfumers alcohol I got is 200 proof so pretty much the same proof as you everclear. I've been trying to look around and I can't get a definitive answer. Everything is scattered. I appreciate the reply back.
Thank you!
You're welcome!💖
This was an amazing video. I want to make a solid cologne with beezwax and coconut oil base. Would the same proportions of the top, middle, and base notes be suitable for this?
Yes, it should! And the oils will hold the scent on the skin longer, too.
Hi Heidi, I loved your video it was the first one that popped up and I don’t even need to search for another. I did hear of others using 90 proof or 100 proof rum as their alcohol but does that fall under the same category as the vodka and Witch Hazel?
Also I was thinking of making a blend for myself that was more on the fresh and airy side so what do you think of these oils I’m planning to use:
Lime
Lemongrass
Vetiver
Patchouli
Frankincense
Thanks again!
Awesome explanation, thank you.
Thank you so much! I hope you'll let me know what other videos you'd like to see!
I will try this, thank you.
Let me know how it goes! :-)
Will do
@@Love-rl9cs How'd it go?
It doesn't smell bad, it's just not what I was trying to go for
No, you can add more essential oil to a solid perfume....up to 10% dilution or so.
Thanks for the great information!
You're so welcome! I hope you enjoy this scent!
Hi Heidi! Such a lovely video with great explanation can't wait to try this, but could you suggest a carrier that's non alcoholic... Love from India!
You could use witch hazel/water combination, but the essential oils won't be dispersed, and also it won't be preserved. To offset this, you could use a solubilizer (you can buy these commercially) and a preservative. :-)
Thank you for such a wonderfully well-made video!!! :)
Thank you so much!
I read that once the essential oils are 100% pure steam distilled EOs, they are not phototoxic. What’s your feedback on this? Thank you.
Most of the chemical, bergapten, and other furanocoumarins are too heavy to be vaporized in the steam like other terpene molecules. So, to a great extent the phototoxicity is greatly reduced or completed gone with steam distillation.
Hi Heidi your my soap instructor thank you ❤😊
You are so welcome!🥰
Great information. Thank you.
Thank you so much!🥰
Hey thanks for this video, i have a few questions, i don’t have cardamom and sandalwood can i replace cardamom with basil essential oil and sandalwood for cedar wood.
Oh, boy---it's been awhile, but I think I was using a 1 ounce bottle? I think I mentioned this in the video? Hopefully someone will help answer this!
You didnt @@HeidiVillegas
Thanks for the video! Luckily I already have all the oils you used. Where do I find Everclear, please?
I'm so glad! That's great! You can find everclear in liquor stores and if your state doesn't allow the selling of 190 proof, you can buy it online. I usually suggest Organic Alcohol and Extractahol as I've heard good things about them.
🤣that look in your eyes after you sprayed and smelled your wrist!! Golden!
Why thanks! LOL I do love my smells!
Love the video. Where can I buy everclear from?
Liquor stores will carry it. Some states won't sell high proof, though, so you may need to cross state lines.
Very nice, thank you!
Thanks for the comment! I appreciate you!🥰
Brilliant video thank you.
Thank you so much!
Thanks for the info ❤
Thank you so much!
Wow I love this video! Do you know how long the scent lasts for?
It depends on how much you spray. But it's a more short-term scent. If you added a bit of light oil, it might last longer. :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Ok. Also, did you specify how many mL's of everclear you used?
Thanks, and dont mean to bother.
Hello Heidi, I've been planning to make my very first essential oil cologne, and I was just wondering whether its ok to just use one top note oil, one middle not oil, and one low note oil (like sweet orange, ylang ylang, and frankincense for example)
Yes, it sure is!
Wow!! Thanks Heidi, enjoyed your video.
G-d bless you 🙏
Thank you so much!
Hi, thanks for sharing, what size bottle did you use ( maybe I missed it in video)
If I recall (this video was done quite awhile ago), I think it was a one ounce bottle.
Thank you for the video! Where do I buy Everclear, please?
Most states have liquor laws...so just look into these. Some sell it right in grocery stores. Others have special stores.
You can also buy online (depending on the state laws). Extractohol and Organic Alcohol are both good.
I’ll have to try this!
I hope you do! It's a great blend, if I say so myself!
Thanks Heidi! Can you please share a link or the full name of the Everclear you are using? Thanks in advance!
I usually head to Utah and just get everclear 190 proof.
Def going to subscribe. Hiedi where do you buy your oils from. Id love to try this . Plz lmk
Hi, Frank!
Absolutely! Just be sure to figure the dilution rate to 2% to 3% dilution for perfumes. This scent would be lovely that way!
Hello! Where did you purchase your Everclear from? Is Perfumers Alcohol just as good? Thank you for the video!
Perfumers alcohol is GREAT! It's just kind of hard to get, so I just go with the Everclear. I have to get mine from friends who live out of state because I can't get it shipped here. Or...I cross state lines into Oregon.
@@HeidiVillegas oh, do you mean the actual alcohol Everclear?
How long does the parfume last?
What percentage of Everclear do you use to essential oils?
I can’t wait to try this!
Let me know how it goes, Karen!
Thank you so much for the information. I plan to make beeswax candles and hope to use essential oils. Do the same rules apply for cologne and candles?
Not exactly, and this is because the heat burns off the essential oils very quickly. Do a little research on scenting candles before starting, and I would use less expensive oils, too. Good luck with it! :-)
@@HeidiVillegas Thank you. I did buy less expensive oils, fortunately!
Hello, great video! I have a question, i want to make men after shave cologne, this recipe is good for this?
I would cut the dilution back to 1% to start. :-)
@@HeidiVillegasdilution of What?
Heidi Villegas Nice video, Im curious with this blend do you have to use alcohol?, I have seen people make oil blends with just the essential oil nothing else added.
Yes, it's best if you use the alcohol because it helps disperse the essential oils properly. It also preserves the cologne for a much longer time than just with water. Water sprays really should only be used for about a week without the proper amount of alcohol.
Hiii i wanted to ask how much ml is the little bottle because i am planning to make some using the same drops and everything. Pleaseee answer and thank you so much :)
I believe the small bottle was one ounce.
I totally just realized the whole point of putting it in a small roller bottle is to take it with you and put it on when you get where your going and not at home lol I feel dumb now 🫣
I appreciate this video. I have 1 question 🙋🏾♀️ what does the alcohol do to the skin? Does it dry the skin out? Any info is greatly appreciated.
I haven't had this experience---dry skin. But we're all different. One thing you can do to offset it is to substitute a tablespoon of the water with aloe vera gel. Shake well, and that will help a lot. You can also sub 1 tsp of water for vegetable glycerine, too.
@@HeidiVillegas ahhh the Aloe will help. Thank you, your the plug thank you!
why dont you use a carrier oil, just curious because other recipes use carrier oils such as almond oil.😁
This isn't an oil-based cologne. It's based in alcohol---like the kind you'd purchase in a beauty place--except I'm using high proof EC.
@@HeidiVillegas ok. But how do they do it with the perfumes we buy from the store.
Quick questions, is that a 2 oz bottle, and which frankincense oil are you using? I have the serrata, frereana and carteri.
Thank you.
What is the special carrier and where can I find it
Love this what if i want it to be extrait de perfum level?
You would most likely change the dilution of the essential oils to a 20% to 40% and that's REALLY high. You'd definitely need to check the safety of the maximum dilution levels of each of the components to be sure it remains in the skin safe range.
When you used ever clear was it 190 proof? And can I use fractionated coconut oil instead of ever clear if I don’t have it available
Yes, I used everclear. FCO is totally different from the everclear---
Will it make a good perfume if just mix Lime, Cardamom and Sandalwood?
And can I use coconut oil as solvent instead of Alcohol?
You could make a roller bottle perfume with fractionated coconut oil (which is liquid), but not a spray. The best thing to do if you're not sure about a scent if to take the lids of the essential oils and place them in your palm. Smell them together, and you'll get a sense if the combination will work. :-) Good luck!
What base note would you recommend for a bergamot and juniper fragrance? Or can I just add bergamot and juniper?
Oh, gosh---those two would be so great all on their own, but a fixative (base) would be a good idea. This is a personal decision, but I bet patchouli would be nice, or sandalwood.
@@HeidiVillegas ah great thanks
Do you recommend using any jojoba oil to help the longevity of the scent? If so, about how much?
I would say try making a solid perfume. Here's a formula you could tweak with this blend: th-cam.com/video/p8cLrjklxWc/w-d-xo.html
