Hi there! Really enjoyed the video! I just wanted to comment and provide some advice to others out there that aren’t super familiar with the Chemistry. The apparatus being used in the video is basically a more ornate-looking steam distillation set up but the principle of steam distillation remains the same. If you don’t have the money to spend on the apparatus in the video, but you’d still like to distill your own essential oil, you could look into getting lab glassware for steam distillation (e.g. condenser column, round-bottom or Erlenmeyer flask, tubing, a receiving flask, and a dean-stark trap for easier separation of the oil and hydrosol). Glassware still isn’t cheap but, overall, it’s a cheaper option than the set-up in the video and it allows for other kinds of distillation as well other than just steam distillation. Hope this is helpful!

This was so interesting! I bet your house smells amazing after your process. Thank you so much for sharing and lots of continued success in all your endeavors. Great job! 🥰
If you don't mind, I have a couple suggestions. One is an electric heating coil so you don't have to have your stovetop running for 3 hours, though you might need to figure out a setup that works for you. Another is having a large container for water (around 1-200L should be fine) with your pump at the bottom to save on water long term. My last suggestion is having a little bit of tubing going from the still outlet to your little separator there instead of it dripping out and into a funnel. Saves some splashing and costs nothing. I'd also suggest drying your herbs before extraction, you should get a little more oil out I'm fairly certain. I enjoyed the video!
@jk2782 Thank you so much for the advice! I was wondering if you had any insight into the effectiveness between air drying, dehydrating, and freeze drying? Would one produce more oil or be more beneficial than another? I am considering investing in a freeze dryer and this would be one of the potential uses but I have read some herbs are recommended to be slightly heat treated with a process like dehydrating in the oven to coax more of the properties out. Would appreciate your thoughts!
@@christinemina6449 from my experience, air drying just takes longer than dehydrating. There are some exceptions, seeds done in the dehydrator might not be viable seeds because they heat up too much for example, but for oils, much of a muchness. A freeze dryer though, I don't have because they are a bit pricey for my budget. I'm sure there's someone out there who has done the research.

Nice video. I have had a glass distiller for about a decade but this one looks a lot better to have sitting around. You can just hook your faucet to the condenser on the still, it may use less water. You may check out essential oil separators, it has a small valve at the bottom to drain the water from the oil. The oil can also be frozen and then transferred to a new bottle and any water should be left behind as ice if you are careful, if you want to remove any residual water. Hope you don't mind the suggestions. They really are a lot of fun to experiment with. There are hundreds of plants you can put in there.
@@roycropper420 The first 2 Liter was purchased from a company called heartmagic. It included good instructions and easy to understand replacement parts. Still in business, you can find the same turnkey steam distillation apparatuses on Amazon and Ebay. I still have the first one but wanted to scale it down and purchased individual parts to distill in between 25-1000ml. It can now do a full range of types of distillations depending on the configuration. Also, you can indeed buy copper mesh to come into contact with the product being distilled if so inclined. It is packed in a reflux, there may be essential oils that would benefit from it. What I know about its uses is for other types of distilling. Anyway, good luck if you give it a shot.

Just came across your video. Its amazingly well made and demonstartes perfectly. My doubt is, you said first 2or3 bottles of hydrosyl are rich in nutrients and smell. The main utensil can carry 5 ltr water. So, we end up nearly 60% as strong hydrosyl. Can we reuse the less rich hydrosyl which is about 40% of collection, during the next process of distillation, instead of discarding it?
you definitely can, but not much is left at the end, and what’s remaining in the pot doesn’t smell great, it still carrie’s benefits. So it just comes down to your preference.
I very much enjoyed your video. Technically, this operation is not distillation, it’s steam stripping. The separation of the oil and water after condensation is the natural 2 phase layers of an oil and water. The ending is a simple decant step.

lovely.. thank you.. my first video on this subject.. I'm no design expert but I would say the still has a few flaws right of the bat.. the handle burned 1. because it's wood.. I never understood using wood on things that go on flames.. it's bonkers. but 2. because the pipe coming off is too short .. that's why you had it only half on the flame and hence the handle over the flame.. so that the pipe reached out to the side.. the pipe down is too short too.. that's why you needed to prop up the oil jar.. did they expect this part to levitate.. a really bizarre construction.. and using plastic tubes on an item that sits on a naked flame is just plane dangerous.. and silly.. it looks gorgeous and yo've managed to happily navigate all the weird design flaws so well done for that.. and helped me learn what no to buy.. very exciting in general and you are a joy so thank you for sharing so generously.. ;9)

Can I ask where did you get a glass distiller from ? thats genius. maybe a glass and copper mix would be the perfect still if there ever was one ...
@@coreymillia cool thanks for info and reply 🇬🇧
Helpful information. Thankyou :)
Which plants/flowers give you the best yield in your distilling life ?
Hi Corey, where did you buy your glass distiller please? Thank you for your suggestions. Appreciate it.
Casey, how completely awesome! Thanks. I had no idea it was so easy to do this. I’m a zone 1 so no lavender for me. But I can do things like calendula. Thanks - I appreciate you!
I love lavender? And there’s nothing better than growing your own! I’m her to learn how to utilize it
Loved this video, very interesting. Thank you for sharing!
Aha! so now I know what to do for my lavender. I will have a garden and do this! Thanks
Very Cool 😎I really loved seeing how you distilled the oil! Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge and skills. Looking forward t o seeing what else you do.
This is the most awesome video. Thank you for sharing I'm glad I found your page.
Your video was very helpful and informative!
Thank you for such a wonderful informative video. I live in a coastal town outside Cape Town where there is so much natural vegetation called Fynbos where you get really good fragrances. I would love to start doing this process of extraction, but just starting out and have a looooonnng way to go, but thanks again for the inspiration!
Loved your video! You could use the hydrosol that you want to toss for a foot bath. I also add dried or fresh flowers for the ultimate at home spa experience ❤️
Hello my friend. This is more than just a video, you put love and passion into it. Great job! Good luck

I love essential oils. I have a ton of lavender that I would love to do this with! Your viewership is grand!I'm still struggling at 204 subscribers on my little gardening channel but I'll get there one day! Don't give up on your dreams guys! Keep grinding
Thank you so much for this video... learned a lot and now can truly appreciate lavender products/oil and why the expense. I will continue to enjoy my lavender in the garden (bees are loving it now) until I'm ready to take on such an interesting process.
Thanks for sharing 😍 lots of love from arctic Norrway 🙌🏵🌺🌹🌼🌻
Wow… that was very interesting to watch. I love lavender….
breath of fresh air in a stuffy old world ❤
Thank you for this educative video about the process onf how to make essential oils from the Garden with an At Home Distiller.. I enjoyed watching Explore your Dream Life channel recommended to me by TH-cam .I have liked and subscribed to the channel.

Glad you liked it!!
Very interesting. Learned a lot and could smell it😂😂😂 love lavender.
Neat. First time I have seen how this process works.
Thank you 🙏 so much for sharing your experience and knowledge. 🌺😎 Brilliant just brilliant 🤩.
X2 n electric and a PID or PWM controller. That’s a lot of heat your using. Could also insulate the still when using electric so it’s not erratic every time the ac cycles. Great video, always room for refinement.
Your farm looks fancy ... love it!!
Thanks for sharing. I did not know you could do this at home. Can you explain how you make use of the hydrosol water that/s collected?
Thank you for sharing I enjoyed watching
I love this video! Great job
Loved this video!
For those who do not know.
That U thing next to the still is called a Peacock.
Mostly used for liquor gravity readings while distilling
Do you think it would be better filling the bucket halfway and then adding ice as it gets warmer. I feel it would conserve water better
Glad I came here 😂 I definitely have that just laying around the house
Very interesting. I love lavender oil!
Love y/our journey xxxxxx Happy new year to all xxxx n
I don't know how l can express my joy with your video. Thanks for sharing. I also have a distillery where l do lemongrass/ citronella essential oils. I love your experience. How can l get a small distiller like yours?

Exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much for the information. You are the sweetest 💗
I hope you thank God every morning you wake up for his blessing of such a beautiful big house and garden.
Damn!! Kinda shitty! Wth are u thinkn?!?? Smh damn!
🤯☠️👹💀👺🔥😳
lovely.. thank you.. my first video on this subject..
I'm no design expert but I would say the still has a few flaws right of the bat..
the handle burned 1. because it's wood.. I never understood using wood on things that go on flames.. it's bonkers. but 2. because the pipe coming off is too short .. that's why you had it only half on the flame and hence the handle over the flame.. so that the pipe reached out to the side..
the pipe down is too short too.. that's why you needed to prop up the oil jar.. did they expect this part to levitate.. a really bizarre construction..
and using plastic tubes on an item that sits on a naked flame is just plane dangerous.. and silly..
it looks gorgeous and yo've managed to happily navigate all the weird design flaws so well done for that.. and helped me learn what no to buy..
very exciting in general and you are a joy so thank you for sharing so generously.. ;9)
Would some ice cubes added to the bucket make any sense? Might not be worth it if you have a cold water faucet right there, just pondering.
Thanks for the video.
I love flowers,I love making sage with plant/flowers
I’m a new subscriber, great job on being so creative, I’m a candle maker now and want to create my own oils too, thanks for sharing.❤
I have a balm that is conifer and Lily - of- the - Valley that works both as pain killer for sciatica pain, and as a mosquito repellent! Turns out mosquitoes hate LOTV! Rubbed in skin, under panties and shorts, walking the dog is mosquito free!!
I would like to try my hand at doing this myself, as my provider has stopped attending our farmers market.😢
That is great to know about the balm, thank you!
Gees, how did you learn all that? This is amazing!!!! God, I wish I was retired... The D@MN Lottery never comes thru for me
I enjoyed the video, I would have liked to see how, you mixed the water and or oil with the alcohol base of Everclear, to get an idea of how many drops, etc. to use? I am also curious if you have used other plants and what you are using to clean your device so as not to mix the smells.
Amazing video. Thanks so much and Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.
Casey amazing job. you inspired me to a new level now.
You should try distilling your own alcohol for your mixes.
That looks like a very fun process and unit.
Great vid! Concise yet easy going. New sub
Cheers from Buenos Aires
Thank you for sharing. I am really enjoyed watching the video. 🙂
Great video! This is badass glad it’s going well
Thanks!
I just found your channel. I always wondered how this was done. This was great, thank you!
