    I have the same catch can on my 2012 3.5 ecoboost with 194,000 miles. Truck runs awesome and strong. So to the people who say these engines don’t last they just need to know how to take care of them. Catch can, full synthetic oil and change plugs every 60k miles.

    I have a 2011 1st gen 3.5 ecoboost with 311,000 miles on it, 100% original except a K&N drop in air filter and 3” exhaust with magnaflow muffler, I tow 20’-30’ boats & yachts, palomino cab over camper with towing my striper, no catch can, no cold air intake, stock intercooler….

    • @nateg08

      I think ecoboost got a bad rap from a couple of their problem engines like the 2.0. I've got an 15 3.5 lariat that I absolutely love. Tow regularly and it's torque is ridiculous. About 100k so far but hope to have it for a long time to come. Oil changes every 5k or less depending on how much I tow. I think the engines got a bad reputation from non maintenance. They definitely aren't as forgiving as older na motors when it comes to neglecting maintenance.

  • @dasschnellsten
    @dasschnellsten 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Guys the Oil Catch and Intercooler are musts!!!! There are TSBs out there that include issues fixed by these. You can't use engine or fuel injector cleaners because of the turbo fans, so you need that Oil Catch. That build-up will flake off the intake valves and damage the turbo blade if you use cleaner - there's no approved way by Ford to clean that grime. The intercooler with a drain plug will save you from those misfires in humid conditions. Otherwise, you'll have to drill a hole in your factory intercooler to drain it.
    I wish TH-cam's search algorithm showed me this guide when I first bought my 2015 F150 with the 3.5L Ecoboost. Instead, I got people suggesting lift kits... Not anything functional.

    Where exhaust is concerned, you just need something that will move exhaust away from the turbocharger faster or in greater quantities. That's where you get performance from an ecoboost, otherwise it's just noise, and there's nothing wrong with that. I have an Eco-Boost, my third turbocharged car. The exhaust that comes with it isn't exactly bad, but a little more performance is always there to be milked.

    I don't want to be negative and I understand the displacement difference, but I had a 2003 Lightning, when stock, made slightly better dyno numbers than the 3.5 tuned. 363whp and 430lbs.
    I am currently in the market for a 2021 and will be buying the 3.5 Hybrid with the 7.2kW.
    I am curious if there are mods for those...perhaps software that will allow overvolting the electric assist.
    Have you guys tested nitrous kits?
    Auxiliary fuel tanks for E85 and tunes?
    Where are the first weak links in the strength of the driveline?
    Thanks guys.

      No, the 2018 2nd generation 2.7 and 3.5 both have Direct fuel injection and Port fuel injection with computer programming; the direct injectors spraying only on cold startup and under hard acceleration. The 2nd generation engines does not need a oil catch can separator.

      Higher octane doesn't add power. Octane is used to counter deto from adding more power. The tuner advances several things that make detonation a thing. Running higher octane counters that in more aggressive tunes. The engines own computer and sensors will likely correct for not running 93 but the results would likely be subpar. Dunno just a random on the internet.

      So apparently. The original ecoboost had single injection engines which was causing some of the issues with oil and carbon build up (not creating enough heat to burn them off) as of 2019 Ford is saying that they solved this known issue with dual injection, allowing for more control and higher temps.

      I currently have a 2015 F-150 3.5 non ecoboost. Shortly before getting this truck I bought a 2012 F150 with ecoboost 3.5 from a dealership that neglected to tell me about an accident it was in and I had body issues with doors jarring around when hitting any kind of bumps on the road. Truck came with clean car fax and something was shady about the deal and I wasn’t going to leave it be spending 15 grand for a used truck that was becoming a headache. They were great about refunding me towards another truck they had. I bought a UPR catch can for that truck a week before retuning it and I couldn’t return the catch can so I installed it on the non ecoboost. I catch oil and moisture in my can . So I’d say get you one, UPR large can being the better choice. $400

I'm not 100% positive but I would definitely research more before adding 1 . That was the case for adding a programmer that saved the off setting for start/stop tech. They said dealership can detect certain ones and there is only 1 brand that makes a undetectable 1 that dealership cant tell was used .

    Justin, I’m curious. I just bought my first F150 and it has the 3.5 ecoboost. You said you’re a big proponent of tuning the 3.5’s. I’m curious what if any tunes you’re aware of that won’t effect a new truck warranty. I bought the extended warranty too since it’s my first ever turbocharged car/truck. So I don’t want to chance losing coverage. I’m not looking to do a heavy mod so a mild tune would be fine by me. Thanks in advance.

    • @americantrucks
      @americantrucks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Tuning is sort of an all or nothing approach when it comes to the topic you are concerned about. One tuning option wont' affect your warranty more or less than another tuning option. My suggestion, if you're that concerned about it, skip the tune for now or grab a pedal commander or throttle device that doesn't physically alter your trucks calibration. -Justin
