  • Welcome to Season 4 of The Fabrication Series!
We got our hands on a 2014 F-150 3.5 Ecoboost and we decided that, before building it, we'd give these so called "free mods" a shot since the requests were rather overwhelming.
So here they are! How "free mods" for the F-150 actually work along with the factory stuff and even some ridiculously detailed jargon in fine TFS fashion.

With the blow off cap aren’t there two turbos on the 3.5 eco boost. If there are two would you cap both. I saw a pretty nice intake from afe that had each turbo intake tube separated to eliminate the turbulence issue in the stock intake.

When I had a 14 F150 ecoboost. I made a larger intake area in the dirty side (bottom) of airbox, enlargened the intake hole towards the front of truck for cold air. Then I removed the factory boat anchor muffler and resonator and replaced it with a performance flowmaster style chambered muffler. Truck dyno'd at 392 hp and 428 torque at the rear wheels. I was very happy with those simple budget mods. I now have a 2020 ecoboost F150 which I will do the same mods to and see if it is better than the 2014 was back then.

Informal fuel economy test with the vortex tornado thingy's in the intake:
    2014 F-150 w/ 3.5 eco.
Drove about 500 miles / 7 hrs. with them in one way on a road trip. Then removed them before returning home. According to the truck I averaged 18.4 mpg with them in. 18.7 mpg after "delete." No info as far as power but throttle response does seem to improve, but just barely and only based on my opinion. Also definitely can hear the turbos better, but again, only slightly. Hope someone else finds this interesting / informative!
    Thanks for the great video.

Idk why, but my 14 eco boost f150 only gets about 14 if I stay out the throttle, however it is 4x4 so idk if thsts got anything to do with mileage, never really pay attention to the mileage till I'm on a road trip but it's also got a 36 gallon fuel tank on it

    • @CodyTres7
      @CodyTres7 ปีที่แล้ว

@@insertnamehere4143 I think we have the same setup! I did the same trip recently and only averaged 16 miles per. Driving conditions are a huge variable. Anytime you're in boost your millage will take a hit. (Not as fun to drive a boosted engine w/o boost tho!) Things like traffic, hills, big wheels, definitely affect millage. Maybe worth it to make sure your rotors aren't warped as well, those suckers get hot. That being said, there doesn't seem to be consistent reasons why the mpg's vary so much from truck to truck. There's quite the rabbit hole to go down looking for answers haha. Recently I've been debating removing the intake and cleaning the valves. Thanks for the reply!

Why did you have to replace the throttle body?

So any ordinary person who is an engineer who understands fluid Dynamics understands that in some case those things in the pipes are essentially vortex generators, allowing the air to flow less encumbered. Same concept as sandpaper shark shin allowing them to have lower drag whilst swimming through the water.

Lost most ordinary people at: “Any ordinary person who is an engineer” so you mean a unicorn? Yeah they don’t exist.

Would anyone have any info on how to clean the intake and turbo on a 2015 eco boost?

I removed my rings, drove for a few weeks and ended up getting a check engine light. " low turbo boost pressure" left and right. Re- installed the rings... no other issues. I believe the ford engineers know what they are doing when designing the intake system.

I know guys that have had the same issue and others still no issue for a year . It's odd how the truck react differently.

That has nothing to do with boost pressure fyi

I had the low boost code setting quite a bit... Tried injector cleaners... Fuel treatments etc...Nothing... Codes still set...Then Removed the intake rings... Codes have not been set since... 2015 Lincoln Navigator 3.5 EcoBoost...

My 18 3.5 has the silencer rings removed since I bought it new and no problems, just more whistle.

That’s the system not meeting “factory performance” If tunes properly it wouldn’t be the issue cause the engine is taught to work that way.
