Toyota Fortuner vs Ford Everest: In-Depth Comparison & Review (2016)

  • It’s hard to believe, but the previous Toyota Fortuner was launched in South Africa back in 2006. The model showed impressive stamina in the market; even towards the very end of its shelflife, it still sold very well, holding the number one spot in the segment of bakkie-based SUVs.
    However, Ford’s new Everest, which arrived late in 2015, has certainly given Toyota something to think about. With a high level of comfort and interior space, not to mention good looks, how does the latest Fortuner compare to the hugely improved Everest?
    In this video, we investigate:
    - Ride comfort on gravel and tar
    - Interior space and comfort
    - Boot space
    - 3rd row seating comfort
    - Infotainment system capability
    - Pricing

    I have my Fortuner 4x4 automatic since 2010 at almost 45k kms. now, no maintenance repair until now except for the usual change oil and change oil filter. And i just changed the brake pads few months ago. Very durable and affordable medium size suv.

      +AbuNaser ALkindi nope. The earlier models of hilux and fortuner had a narrower track front and rear. Combined with stiffer suspension and much higher speeds than previous generation hiluxes(3.0kzte) most of the rollovers were people not realizing how quick they are going. The wider track was standard after the first facelift.

      It appears I was wrong. The problem still persists!!!! Search for Hilux elk test. It's still the worst vehicle in its class for emergency avoidance. So the hilux and consequently the Fortuner will still flip! Goodness gracious.

    For me everest is better, in the top of the line is full of features which very helpful in my driving habit such as:
    1. terrain management
    2. lane departure warning
    3. pre coalition warning
    4. auto high beam lights
    5. adoptive cruise control
    If ford will put the push botton, paddles shift, and remote start this may be a very good suv

    I Had driven a Fortuner diesel model 2006. I was amazed the power of this SUV. The acceleration is quite good. We went to Zambales from Manila and the driving was so smooth. The speed was great. When I check the dipstick of the oil. Amazing the color of the oil like pouring a new oil in it. I haven't driven a Everest yet but I think it has more power than the Fortuner. I love these 2 SUVs.

    I think there is one point that u didn't mention. The Everest is much more quiet in its cabin due to the active noise cancellation technology, accompanied with its more generous third row, so the Ford provides more relaxed feeling at long distance traveling.

    Iv'e had the old model Toyota Fortuner since January 2006, 10.5 Years, nothing has ever gone wrong, nothing has ever broken, it's been totally reliable, it goes everywhere, through floods, across muddy fields, nothing has ever been too much for this car. I'm in Thailand and Toyota Service is excellent and Toyota Dealerships and service centres are everywhere.
    I like the look of the Ford, but in Thailand Ford has a very bad reputation for poor after sales service and general reliability of the cars, so as much as I like the look of the new Everest, I wouldn't risk buying one, I don't like the style of the new Fortuner but if I was getting a new SUV in Thailand, it would be a Fortuner, purely on the basis of my Toyota's bulletproof reliability.
    But I'm keeping my 2006 model, it's been too good to get rid of, and I removed the rear seats on mine shortly after I got it, they come out easily and now I have a Bulletproof 5 seater with a ton of cargo space.

    • @BabyZ0914

      same sentiments regarding both cars. and taking out the seats for more cargo is really the way to go. Happy to know that there are people there who know the real gist of cars. I guess poeple choose the ford for the looks and ride,and for those who use it for city driving.

      Zero Tolerance it's the same with the price in Jamaica too, the fortuner is actually the most expensive in its class (it's almost the same price as the Prado) and the Everest is the cheapest, although this may be attributed to the Fortuner being in the market since its first generation and this generation's Everest is the first one that is dealer sold.

    Very objective review. Keep up the good work. However i would give the win to the Everest not so much for the value but i think you get an overall better experience with it than the Fortuner. That, for me is better than saving R45,000. As for the perceived sluggishness of the engine, i think a drag race somewhere in between the review would have settled that. I feel the Everest would win; very marginally though.

    i really don't agree with ur review here.
    The ford everest is a far more advanced suv with good power, luxury and technology.
    We get wat we pay for right?
    The everest just drives so well. The kind of level its achieved in ride and handling department is outstanding for an suv of tat size. And it is also slightly bigger in size where u will end up sitting in a much wider and rommier cabin than the toyota.
    And also in other markets the everest has managed to outsell its competition and a class above i.e prado.
    thank you.

    An Everest was on fire this weekend alongside the road, so...... ford tries hard to change their brand name.
    And please, I am not a Ford hater nor a lover. Though, would like to see the Ford Raptor when it lands in SA - looks impressive.
    Was towing a 260kg trailer on Namibian beaches with my 2.4 Fortuner 4x4 recently through difficult sand, and the Fortuner had no issues in doing so. Was surprised by its capability - have to note that I have more than 20 years of 4x4 experience. I purposely did not buy the 2.8 Fortuner - too many electronics and sea salt humidity does not go along (obviously pricing was also considered - the 2.8 does not offer that much more in performance for R140 000 more - 2018 pricing). Eventually we buy these 4x4’s for its off-road functionality. Not all off-road tracks need all 4 wheels engaged. This is the option provided by Toyota. I like the reliability of the Fortuner with its solid name and history, and Toyota’s dealership network.
    There is no perfect 4x4, it is all about your specific needs and sometimes pocket. I have seen the almost R2million Mercedes G-lander in Namibia; it will not exceed the Fortuner’s capability. I will still maintain my view that the Landcruiser 79-series is the real/ideal/serious off-roader - this comes with a dent in the pocket

    I'd go for the Everest, even though the running costs might be higher.
    Why?!?
    - Better style;
    - Better comfort for driver and passenger;
    - Better ride quality;
    - Effortless traction control.

      - The Comfort is about the same
      - Better ride quality cuz you will hear the wind when the car moves faster
