  • The new-generation 2023 Ford Everest has made plenty of noise since its launch last year, earning plenty of fans thanks to its rare turbo-diesel V6 engine option. But that doesn't mean the competition still isn't stiff. Enter the Isuzu MU-X and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport.
Yep, this is all about ute-based 4WDs, with the Everest based on the Ranger, the MU-X the D-Max, and the Pajero Sport the Triton. But while their LCV counterparts are literally tools of the trade, the large SUV trio is instead looking to offer buyers seven-seat practicality while still offering a high level of off-roading prowess.
So, in this expert comparison review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft pits the new Everest against the established MU-X and Pajero Sport to see if it's now the best adventure-ready ute-based SUV money can buy. His final verdict is sure to ignite plenty of debate...

I have never once wished I had 4wd mode for the road in the MUX. Towing a 3 tonne caravan, not towing, raining, none of it ever required an extra 2 driven wheels. I’m sure there are some exceptional circumstances where it might be handy, but I’ll take the fuel economy, less weight, and less complexity from not having the centre diff any day

Its unfortunate the Isuzu MU-X does not have a 4WD system that works on standard sealed roads such as the Ford & Mitsu. The Pajero Sport might be getting old but it's still a great 4WD that can be used 100% of the time on all road surfaces. The Ford is great too but is it really worth the extra $10-15K?

Isuzu has stayed true to its roots. Not trying to move to the luxury side and sticking with its original workhorse purpose. I think that's what makes it one of the best. I own a 2019 2.5l D-Max and I will say it is the best car I've owned by far. Reliable and honestly a great offroad performer. Suspension is not the most comfortable on the road but offroad is where it excels.

It would be interesting to find out over time whether the clutch packs in the Ford's transfer case eventually wear out and require replacement. The Pajero Sport and the Isuzu MU-X do not employ clutches in their transfer case, so there is no friction materials that could eventually requirement replacement.

The slow and low sound of the MU-X will make you buy it. (Ground clereance, price, raliavility and economy are secondary plusses) Then you wife will take it because is great. Then your son will borrow it to go to wilderness, then your neighbour will buy it too. It is infectious. Been there done that.

Nissan patrol is bigger but has a higher ground clearance so much so that you can literally put a 33.9 inch tyre on a stock patrol without any lift. Silly to compare everest with patrol. The top spec everest with bigger tyres can do extremely good. But not a stock one for sure. Interestingly the stock patrol has a ground clearance of 270 mm.

Never mention or include about the after sale customer support, reliability, and how prolific some car manufactures/dealers are, with throwing customers under the bus with legitimate claims. Not naming names frd, iszy, nssn😂. That should also be included!!!

Strange in some ways as have the same engine base in my 2015 D4 with the ZF8 speed and it has been very economical over 7 years at around 11l/100K overall. Maybe its tuned in a way that any off-road use spikes it dramatically.

Did you leave it locked in 1st gear only? you claim to be a driver that wants to take control ... I call BS on that Marcus, clearly you did not take control of the manual mode transmission option.

Buy the Mux - it won't break down😂
And it won't cost you $10000,s if it does
Smart electronics are the killer with the Pajero & Everest and when you need help - the sales guys fill you with 👊

The MU-X, defeated the Mitsubishi when it's pick-up counterpart sucked bigtime with CarExpert's off-road test and the Triton was the drama-free ute that time?

You said multiple times that the Ford Everest is hamstrung by its size but failed to say or show how exactly. Also its to clinical for you not for the avergar buyer who wants to take their beast straight from the showroom to the track. Your reviews shiuld be what is best for all not best for you

It’s out of date in safety by a long way and should not be compared in the current tested ancap 5 star it’s only 3-4 at best.

My Isuzu 2021 developed DPF problem and Isuzu Ute Australia did everything to refuse warranty repair. Took them 4 weeks to come up with pathetic excuse of dirt in the fuel tank. I will not buy another Isuzu.

    • @351tgv
      @351tgv ปีที่แล้ว

yep lots and lots of info about the DPF issues with the D-Max and M-UX but the automotive media are refusing to report it for fear of losing advertising money.
I know of at least 15 D-Max off the road because of th DPF issue and Isuzu refusing to fix under warranty claiming the DPF is a consumable part

I just had my isuzu mux last year. Undeniably it is more 100% reliable in terms pf durability, performance and fuel consumption. I must say Isuzu MUX is underrated but can compete to the roads impressively.

I have to agree. I have a 2015 mux lsm and have surprised myself a few times getting through some challenging terrain where other more popular/expensive brands have struggled. I am days away from getting the 2023 model. Hoping it meets/exceeds my expectations.

Driven the Everest and the MUX, onroad, there is no comparison….the Everest wins hands down. Apart from size, it wouldn’t be much difference off-road.

Agreed. Very biased review towards the Mux. Not a bad rig but the Everest eats it alive. Take the badges off each car and try again.
