I can see that happening, or at least being hit in the face. When you’re holding your ear against the screw driver, your eyes aren’t looking at where the other in is and you can move it to the wrong spot and “bam!”
The best way seemed to remove the belt and spin by hand. Nice work!!
For sure that is one of the best and most effective ways to find the issue

Cut a 1 gallon jug in half and stick the handle of the screw driver in the top part of the jug. It works great

That belt alignment tool could work to align a motorcycle drive chain too I bet. Pretty slick.
