Stephen Colbert took over as host of The Late Show on Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2015. They seem to think a sexual predator isn't dissuaded by rape/assault laws, but you better believe getting caught in the opposite gender's bathroom dressed as that gender will make them think twice about the rape they want to carry out....ya know, with the diligent bathroom police keeping watch and all.
+Daniel McMillen A well articulated paragraph, but I would note that the key issue still exists: how many instances are there of a public restroom being specifically monitored by the police? And if there aren't "bathroom security," then who is left there to monitor them? Generally, bathrooms are located in a non-discreet location (which, I don't understand. I hate getting stuck in a place having no idea where to go lol), so even bystanders aren't likely to just notice something odd going on.
And, the problem most dissenters make is over-complicating the entire thing. It's pretty simple: people identify what they want as, it is there business, so just call them what they want to be called. You might say you just want your children to be safe, which I totally understand and think is important, but the fact remains that a paper dragon law will not make bathrooms any safer than just allowing transgender folks to use the bathroom they prefer. A person looking to sexually abuse a child or woman could gain access to the bathroom regardless. But would they? Often times, there are other people present in the bathroom so I do have to question how unsafe they are in the first place.
I'm also not totally against co-ed bathrooms in regards to safety, tbh. Although Stephen wouldn't like the raise in bathroom traffic (nor would I for that matter), more people effectively means= more security. An abuser is not going to commit the crime in a high-risk area.
I do respect your opinion and share your concern for safety, but from a practical point of view, these laws won't solve anything in my opinion. I also apologize for my original post: re-reading it, I did not intend for it to be so inflammatory and aggressive!
+Daniel McMillen Your repeating yourself at this point. Still no substantive, structured responses to anything. I'm not sure who says its up to public opinion in the first place. This isn't about public opinion on appearance, it's about allowing people the freedom to be who they are. The judgment of appearance is exactly the issue. If these people had the choice, you would never know the difference. Like I've said, it's already possible to gain entry, it's already illegal to abuse people. I'm all for prevention, if the plan to enforce is shows solvency. This is not a call for "political correctness" but a call to not be assholes. Political correctness is simply a term developed by conservatives to blanket statement any ideal carried by liberals.

I also never suggested I wanted nor had an answer to enforcing gender specific bathrooms. That's all you again. But, generally speaking, the closest you can get to appeasing people is generally through more freedom. You saying any solution would be impossible to uphold is...my argument in the first place lol. Bathroom laws cannot enforce shit.

+Lauritz Wiesinger I've used men's bathrooms in emergencies. There is only so long my bladder will take standing in line and if I have to breeze by a bunch of men at the urinal to get some sweet relief in a stall, then so be it. Unisex bathrooms are actually much nicer than the male/female ones. The stalls give you full visual privacy because they don't have those massive gaps in between stall sides and bottom. They are also much cleaner, haven't spotted a single bloody tampon glued to the ceiling yet and people actually clean up after themselves. I think this issue can easily be fixed if they just added a unisex bathroom to every location that has a male/female one. Then people can choose their preference and you get more bathrooms for when it gets crowded. Win/win situation.

Unisex bathrooms are the norm in much of europe and on a growing number of college campuses with little to no issues on both sides because nobody has much desire to hang out in a public bathroom with shitting strangers. Unisex bathrooms are different from the standard male/female bathrooms which have gaps big enough in between doors and walls that pretty much everything is on display for a passing stranger. Personally, I much prefer unisex because you get some actual visual privacy and they are much cleaner because people clean up after themselves due to social pressure in not wanting the opposite sex to think of them as disgusting unhygienic slobs.
***** First, if you are going to pull out "facts" then link the peer reviewed studies otherwise the information is worth as much as anything typed out in youtube comments, which is nothing at all. Second, I wrote from my personal experience, as I stated, and unisex bathrooms are pretty prevalent in Europe and popping into existence on American college campuses quickly. I've heard lots about bathroom sexual assault, but never has anyone been able to point to real statistics about sexual assault in bathrooms, and more specifically sexual assault in unisex bathrooms. I have seen plenty of media outlets that promote transphobic bathroom myths by failing to fact-check unsubstantiated stories about alleged sexual assaults. I've seen lies and I've seen stories and I've seen baseless fearmongering. What I haven't seen is hard facts backed by solid evidence that makes going unisex worse than staying separated. Either way, the easiest fix for this problem is to just add a unsex bathroom to every location that houses a male/female one Then people can chose and you have extra bathrooms if things get crowded.

If you're transgender, fine, fuck it, go in the women's room if you're so inclined. But if you can go in, what exactly is the legal distinction between a transwoman, and a cisman like myself? None, because I tried out the women's bathroom at Target just to fuck with people, and guess what? Women didn't like it. Women complained. Target did nothing to stop me because it's their policy to respect my choice to say "I feel like a woman today."

No it doesn't stop them, but at least it could possibly deter them knowing that it's not accepted for them to be in there in the first place and that someone may stop them rather than just letting them go in which is the first step to getting what they want.
Just like with gun free zones. If you let everyone carry guns in a bank it won't stop a mass murderer or robber but at least there's a chance to stop them because multiple people may be armed and allowed to do so.

If the issue is men pretending to be women and sneaking into public restrooms-that's been going on since we've used clothes. There are children dying everyday of Cholera and Typhus (to name just two sewer water caused diseases) in every corner of our world because they can't get access to clean sanitation. Don't the police have other more pressing problems in North Carolina? It is similar to entrapping and arresting gay men in parks. I feel sorry for the cops have to do this.
I've seen a solution in Europe: to have individual bathrooms. Basically a big room with little rooms which one with one bathroom (including sink)... In some restaurants (very tiny ones) there's literally one bathroom for everybody and although that could be too much (because it's only one) there people definitely look at things waaaay different than in America.

We.. we do have bathroom stalls in America. The bathrooms work fine whether they're integrated or not; that has never been a problem with either system.
A lot of larger facilities to not opt for individual restrooms because they can be locked and used by drug addicts.

Everybody wants to make a big deal out of anything.
You can't do or say anything anymore, because there's always someone gonna be offended, and making a big deal out of it.
Example: Here in the Netherlands we have this annual kids holiday. It's not like someone came up with the holiday recently, it's been around for ages. But suddenly people feel the need to be offended by it and spoil it for everybody.
If we all could just mellow out. It will all be ok.

If there are enough people who find something offensive, it should be changed. That probably means there is a logical basis for their being offended as well, otherwise it wouldn't occur in groups. The only real alternatives is to either say nothing is objectively offensive, therefore nothing is offensive, or to say that offensiveness is something that can be defined objectively. The first option doesn't seem viable, at least to me. If you think you can do the latter, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

The politicians use the fear of men committing violence against women in order to get the public on their side. The real target is transgender students and questioning youth.
