What I don't understand is why calculate medical costs for transgender people specifically. Being transgender is not a disease. It is as if Trump is saying that transgenders need some kind of special medical care, but medical care for anyone in the military should be the same, shouldn't it? All military people should be in great physical condition regardless of their sexual identity, so why then exclude transgenders from the military? It is simply unfair to even begin such a discussion. If anyone is unfit for anything, it is Trump being the president and commander of the military.

The military is a high-impact job, usually. Men who spend a long time in high impact jobs tend to lose testosterone at greater rates than normal - enough so that erectile dysfunction is pretty common among them.

What I don't understand is why calculate medical costs for transgender people specifically. Being transgender is not a disease. It is as if Trump is saying that transgenders need some kind of special medical care, but medical care for anyone in the military should be the same, shouldn't it? All military people should be in great physical condition regardless of their sexual identity, so why then exclude transgenders from the military? It is simply unfair to even begin such a discussion. If anyone is unfit for anything, it is Trump being the president and commander of the military.
It isn't an illness - the medical costs refer to hormone therapy and other medical procedures involved in the transition. However, not all transgender people want to transition for a variety of reasons, and as Stephen pointed out, the military spends much more money on much less important things.
