Not a complete disaster. For the cooling issues, I would give the system a thorough flush. If it's been sitting then there could be a build up of corrosion and general gunk in there. If the head gasket is blown it's a very easy job to replace.

Fix it properly though, no bodge jobs. And also a great vote of confidence in the fact you worked on my Mini and yet knew funk all about them. Cheers mate. 😂🤣
Put a new thermo in but drill a few small holes in the flat part before you fit it. If you`ve not welded before get your mate in, it`s not as easy as it looks.
Flush the rad,with hose pipe a couple of times also check core block plugs for rust as if rusty water internals are clogged body rot is normal invest in a grb shell bye bye rot

Try running it without the stat in it, if its been stood it could be stuck closed.
that's what I'm going as we speak, great minds! i have flushed the system and now going to run it tomorrow with it out! fingers crossed
