  • Motoring journalist and TV presenter Jonny Smith buys a 1989 Mini 30 edition from its original owner as a 15,000 original mile garaged survivor. In this part 2, he drives the car for the first time and takes it for its MoT test (which is a mandatory health check in the UK for all cars older than 3 and younger than 40 years old).
If you haven''t seen the first part - the 'will it start?' bit - please watch that first to make sense of this vid.
Subscribe to Carpervert and you can expect a broadchurch of Jonny's car projects, exploring other folk's interesting/mad machines, barn/field finds, drive-buy roulette roadtrips and tests of new cars... with a twist. Most of all thanks for watching.

I owned a 1975 Clubman auto for many years and I was impressed by the gearbox. Very clever engineering.
Be careful not to hit the sump - there's not a lot of ground clearance!

Reminds me of my mint mk1 Mini Minor I had some 18 years ago. Blokes at work would ask to sit in it & smell the interior. It got so much attention wherever we went. Proper Mini's always bring out the best in people.

Yeah, the poor old auto power-plant used in this Mini, and also in the auto versions of the Allegro and the popular 1100/1300 cars is shat on really more then it deserves. I have driven an auto one of these, and they are easily as much fun as the manuals. They are a good auto for the platform. I guess cos of the complexity of these vs manual boxes, they were not that popular with people cos if they broke down, you needed specialist service to fix them. That equals $$$, but that is true even today with a modern auto, although modern autos are much more reliable then the older ones used to be. Nothing's perfect. ;)

Congrats on the MoT pass. I used to have a 1978 Mini 850 back in 1993. Cheap to run and the most fun you can have on 4 wheels. I'd have another one in a heartbeat if the price is right.

Great Mini Jonny, got one exactly the same (except manual and maroon) year and a half ago!, same issue with gaiter split on MOT, very easy to DIY, excellent cars to learn mechanics on, like you I love taking it for a spin, wanted to keep it original, only changes - Maniflow exhaust (not the loud one) and speakers needed, new battery, new starter, changed the cones all round, apart from that "Dobbin" is solid and runs like a dream! as i'm a bit of a British motor fan, just bought a mint Metro GTA 1991 to add to my collection, totally original, 41k, what a laugh, and really nippy..! would be seen dead 20 years ago in one, but now absolutely love them... appreciate the engineering.

I've loved every Mini I've ever owned or driven! My mum owned three consecutively back in the day. An 850, a 1000 and a Mini Clubman 1000, with the squared off front. None of them were fast, until you got to a corner.

My first car 16 years ago was on the surface an immaculate Mini 30..... Unfortunately 17 year old me didn't know what they were looking for. It was absolutely rotten. A year later I had to sell it as it needed essentially a new shell.... I was gutted but it was a lovely introduction which led to a modified 1293 mini city... Absolutely love these cars!

Had one bought from the original owner after 3 months. They cost £5,500 new and I always knew they would be a ' classic ' , by far , in my opinion , the most ' classy and elegant ' special edition of the lot. They also came with a leather bound book, ' Mini - 30 years on ' with a slip of paper saying ' Enjoy Your New Car ' ! .Regretfully , now both sold but having owned several 'proper Minis ' , now know it is my favourite car of all time. The modern BMW pastiche may be a good car, but it cannot hold a candle to the original ' BMC ' masterpiece in terms of style and aesthetics - and it is NOT a Mini -it looks as if it has been on steroids !.Will have another before I'm done, preferably an early Mk 1 !.

Nice car man that's a great find, I've always wanted a mini but the rust issues used to scare me off, now it's just the insane prices! I agree on your point about simplicity, it's the main reason I love old cars, modern cars feel too sterile and just don't have the same appeal as the sounds, smells and feel of older ones, unfortunately the fact of the matter is that the average joe 'motorist' wants a mobile sofa, not an oily, noisy, tin can on wheels.

The Mini auto box is quite strange. It uses nested differentials, rather than epicyclic gears and there is an oil-pump on the output shaft, so in theory, you could bump start them and tow them unlimited distances. However, the pump isn't connected (it might have been in early examples) as the gearbox runs off engine oil pressure. The pump remained because it forms part of the speedo drive

My first car, in 1991, was a 1977 Mini Clubman 1100. Bought from a trader for £175 as it was running like shite and overheating. It turned out the timing was badly out. A quick twist or two of the dissy had it running lovely again.

You had better explain "choke" for anyone under 35. And get a load of that AP auto box with four gears in 1965. You say that the auto was not a popular option but for many, many years it was the only small car auto option, so for the motability scheme the auto box mini was the only option and sold well.
