Warning: Don't Buy a Porsche 911 Carrera Until You Watch This! Prices are Still Dropping

  • Porsche 911 prices are still decreasing. After a strong run, depreciation is back. Prices for all generation are dropping with exception of the ones for the 996 Carrera. However, there is no reason to panic.

There are three things you must know before buying a Porsche 911 Carrera in 2020.
    1. Prices are still decreased. Prices are pointing down for the majority of the generations. The depreciation rates are the largest in the 992 Carrera segment. This is understandable since it is the newest car.
    2. Prices for the 996 Carrera are relatively stable. Also in the this segment, prices softened. Yet, the decrease is not as strong as in the 997, 991, and 992 segment. The decrease of only 0.4% in the 996.1 market is likely to be the result of chance.
    3. There is no reason to panic. During 2021 and the first half of 2022, prices surged. This trend turned in the summer of 2022 and currently we are seeing that cars start to follow their normal depreciation pattern. Price trends are decreasing linearly and, as of now, there is no indication that the depreciation rate will increase in the short-term.

@@dabrula there are decent private dealers out there. Yes there are shady ones too. The disadvantage you have on BAT is ordering a PPI on the car unless the seller is willing to allow you to do it. People that are willing to just pay for the car will overpay with no guarantee the car is sound. The advantage of a mom and pop is you have the time to inspect the car. Yes they are usually more expensive than a private seller and BAT or other online auction but you can walk away from a sale. BAT and Pcarmarket you cannot. You’re committed to buying the car. That’s a big gamble to take on a car you’ve never driven much less inspected. You’re basically looking at pictures and what the seller posted. Great for less expensive cars, but not for cars in the 6 figure range which is most mid to high range 911s.

Thanks for your analysis. Wouldn't the main reason for the price drops across the models is that the cost of financing/borrowing is so high? Interest rates just keep going up so overall price of the product should come down just to sell it. I am just assuming that even the customers who are in the market for a $50-100k used 911 would need to finance some portion of it.

Just bought a 2021 992, and it felt like a good deal. Below retail value based on CARFAX pricing and had everything I needed / wanted from exterior design. If you’re in the market and see something you can afford, a CPO is not a bad idea now. Dealers are still marking a premium on new 2023 models, and 2024 will be marked up by $8k in the US.

The comments on the 997.2 GTS are too broad because a clear distinction needs to be made between PDK and manual transmission models. The total number of manual transmission GTS models delivered in the US was less than 300 cars and cabriolets are even more rare. Supply and demand…try finding any with low miles and see if what they cost.

    • @NateGrede
      @NateGrede ปีที่แล้ว

Agree. The sold cars he's using for this analysis are PDK based on his references. Still it's boggling how much better the 991.1 GTS held its value compared to the 997 GTS. All that said, good luck finding a no-stories 6MT 997 GTS with under 50k miles for anything under 80k.

    • @fourwheeltrader

What numbers are you based of? It's so complicated to put everything in numbers since we don't know the true prices are the cars sold, condition of the cars, options of the cars. I just find it hard to believe how the graphs are generated...

      Exactly.
You can't discuss 997 gen 1 or 2 without taking into account numbers of Manual Vs Automatic. What about mileage? What about options? What about fluctuations in Trade vs Private sellers? What about when a couple of desperate sellers enter? Or a few ropey example enter cheap? Or that car sales tend to be stronger going into Spring + Summer, especially with Cabs?
I mean, really, this can't be taken very seriously. It's literally Autotrader and a spare lazy 10 min.
Better to have simply originally taken 5 cars from each model and then every 3/6 months compare with cars with pretty much the exact same specs and mileage and seller type. Like for like. Instead of plotting scatter graphs.
I bought a c4s 997 with 38k miles in 11/21 sold it with 45k miles in 1/23 for the same amount.

99 996's are beautiful, unique, and designed by the old guard, almost no options, only sub 3000lb/300hp 911, more engaging, headlights look lovely in my garage. 997's too many buttons, cheap materials trying to fake people into thinking quality. Later models bigger/heavier = Panamera coupe, no thx.

No car is an investment... I can however tell you that the 911 Carrera, of any model designation, us the best bang for buck car you will ever own... Resale value does not matter because I will NEVER sell it...

I don’t buy them because I’m worried about depreciation
I buy them to drive the crap out of them, I figure 1 dollar per mile in additional depreciation for my adventures

Why have you not addressed the Porsche decision for a Stop Sale on the 991 and 991.2 with the Sport Chrono option, and how it is impacting the Porsche 911 used car market and pricing?

The prices were falling, but they seem to be inching back up. There is resistance.
