- So, my puppy - Akumu - just over a year old, has taken a liking to my quilts, LOL! No puppies were harmed - and he's still a part of our family...but, we'll be working with him to teach him to stop grazing on my quilts. In today's video - I'm sharing how I've patched the hole he left in the quilt.

I tore a hole in the middle of a quilt I was quilting on my embroidery machine…I was able to slip a piece of fabric between the top and batting layers, remove the backing and embroider a butterfly over the hole. I gave the quilt to a friend and she loved it, especially the butterfly!
A timely video for me. I’m in the midst of repairing an old quilt and picked up some valuable tips. Many thanks!
Oh no! I do have a tip, don’t know if it will work for you, but when we first got a puppy for our kids when they were young, she seemed to like slippers. So I went to K-Mart (before closed) and bought a pair of slip-on for $2. Everytime she tried to chew on any of our slippers, I took it away from her and gave her HER slip-on. It didn’t take her long to realize hers were to play/chew as i didn’t take it away. one she chewed on, the other one we played “fetch” with. It worked for us. Good Luck!!
That’s a lovely idea!
What I didn’t tell you - my husband and I went up into the back woods of Maine to visit his father and we took TJ (our border collie) with us. To our surprise, TJ came running from down the hall with a slipper in her mouth - by coincidence Tom’s step mom had a pair of slippers the same exact style at TJ’s “chew toy”. So BEWARE! HAHAHA
Excellent idea!👍
our last puppy wanted something soft while teething, we bought fleece fabric to put on top of her bed and that became her lifelong “nook” and quilts were never damaged…just had to replace the fleece as holes in it increased;)
I would match up the pieces on the front and back with a pin, sort of like matching points while paper piecing, and then use glue to baste the patch in place before I sew it down.
That’s a great idea!
Oh no! I have a quilt I made for my son that his dog ate but only in the panel part none in the pieced area that I could replace. I was thinking of appliquéing a dragon silhouette over the big holes.
Great repair job... Here is another idea you could put a makers label (on the front and or the back)along with the patch, on this patch could be the history of this quilt. That you designed and made the quilt and there is a sister quilt made by your friend and any thing else about the quilt. Cheers
When my dogs were chewing everything. We got them hooves. (Like cow hooves) It was a game changer!
Thanks so much for this Becca! I have been avoiding repairing a quilt my grandmother made and you've given me a great idea for fixing it. Blessings to you!
Hey, Becca!
It’s a really good thing that we love our pets! I love that pattern as well. I still have to quilt mine from our zoom retreat. It would be a great choice to make in a twin size for my local hospice.
Clever repair. I wouldn’t have thought of that. I’d have taken a lazier route-needle turned appliqué (using wonder under) a fussy-cut butterfly fabric to match the front, inlaa piece of batting from the back (allowing for an overlap it with the existing batting), appliqué a patch on that back & hand quilt. I LOVE the label idea! 🤣It will certainly bring a huge smile to anyone who sees it in the future.
Thanks, and stay well!

I'd have to make a patch and find a memory saying and aplique on it that makes it a memory forever of that adorable baby chewing it.
I used bitter apple for my blankets when my dog was constantly chewing them. I don’t know if it will stain but he got the hint. The stuff tastes terrible so make sure you wash your hands a lot if you use it.Grannick’s - Bitter Apple Taste Deterrent
Nice repair and fun memory of your quilt! Tell Mary she needs to add a patch to her sister quilt - lol! ❤
I will!
This video is perfect. My Mom gave me a quilt to fix that my brother had made for her. Apparently, there was a mouse in the house. It’s a tshirt quilt
Oh no! Hopefully you can repair the quilt!!
I've mended a few like that Becca, and it works great. ❤
You're so funny! What a great start to the video.
Try the spray that’s called bitter apple
Glad you were able to save and have many more years of puppy use
...or many more puppy meals, LOL
Becca, One thing I did to stop our dog from chewing ,I put Hot sauce on the things she would chew on. The next time she started chewing It didn't take her long to leave it alone. Yes she did have a hot mouth but it didn't last long. problem solved. Blessings Carol
Any of your slow stitchers😄 would find this a treasure! What fun to mend.
Love the label idea! Thanks for showing us a new way to patch a beloved quilt.
This is so helpful - thanks Becca!
Nice decision on how to repair a quilt! Thanks Becca! 😊
Thanks for this Becca! I recently had a friend ask me to patch a quilt, but I didn’t know where to start. I will glue the patch on the back down to hold it in place while I sew through all the layers.
You could make a cute paw print applique and put it over the hole! 😊
Great idea!!
My son’s pup ate a hole in my first quilt. Being lazy, I made a quilt label that read “Lexi ate here” and sewed equal patches to the front and the back.
I have some of these….can’t wait to see the fix!
Great repair. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
I'm new have have watched you and Tiffany. From Ontario Canada. Thanks for the excellent job I have one too fix. Samething dog chewed it.
Whew pretty quilt glad you were able to save it for many more years of enjoyment
Me too! Now to patch two others, lol!
Love you hair cut!
Thank you!
Try spraying lightly with Bitter Apple. I never had it stain, but most dogs hate the taste and quickly learn not to chew these things.
Bitter orange isn't the same thing at all. Has to be Bitter Apple named brand (generics don't work). A trainer that showed his dogs at the AKC competitions taught me about Bitter Apple.
Yes bitter apple works good.
Great tip. I’ll pick some up!!
@@sewbeccayour pup may taste the quilt once it's lightly sprayed w bitter apple but she should back off immediately. Tastes nasty but is non- toxic. I even used the gel form if it on our new redwood deck (my dog thought the posts were giant chew sticks - the Bitter Apple gel rubbed on them cured that very quickly).
Oh man! I just raised a chewing puppy who is much better, but still chews on some items. Her favorites are the top of Dad’s baseball cap and my shoes on inside…yes the no doubt stinky parts! lol. I can laugh about it later. It used to be outside of shoes, furniture, etc. We reinforce with “no” and sub in a chew toy. We give it to her often and play with her. We have made progress but still a journey! 😳
Thank you
Good save
I think so, too!
Great save😊
Thanks 😁
Oh nooo, my dog does the same thing. When he was a puppy, I came home to find my queen sized bed comforter ripped apart with the stuffing all over the place. And 16 years later, I still find my blanket or comforter in his mouth, no lie. So I hope you have better luck than I did.
I'll be honest: I don't know if we'll ever break Akumu of this habit...but I'm going to try! In the mean time, he's not allowed to be alone with any of my quilts!
This is great, my pups have chewed the corners off of a quilt and pillow I quilted.
Glad I’m not the only one that’s struggled with this!
Thank you! Such a practical and useful video!❤❤❤
Thank you!!
Cute little puppy
Hahaha, it's a good thing he's cute!
Awww. Lol…my pup chews hers too…hahahaha it was one of my coverlet quilts that I gave he when i got her, now it’s a dog approved snuggle
Dog approved, I love that!
Love your videos!! I am curious to know if heat & bond lite adhered to your fabric pieces would have been an easy solution. It stops frayed edges and would not have needed two pieces of fabric and likely caused less bulk?
Thank you for this. I have a WIP quilt that got a rats nest during quilting and as I tried to pick it out it got a similar size hole. The position is a bit weird for the label but I think this might work!
Wonderful!
You could also match up the design over the butterfly pattern then hand stitch on and it will be nearly invisible.
Yes! The beauty of this patch is it's easy to take out and I can do a cleaner repair later if I desire. But for now, it's at least able to be washed!
this is an awesome tip - gracias
Glad it was helpful!
perfect
good job
Thanks
omg, this would be a great feature to intentionally put into a Very Hungry Caterpillar quilt - if you placed nibble holes within a panel, it would be awesome!!
That's a great idea!
I was going to say the same thing on the patch that you just said....LOL....
LOL! Next one - I could put "Akumu ate this quilt" and another could be "Akumu rated this meal 10/10, would dine again" LOL - I could have some fun with those patches
TRY Bully sticks with a bully stick holder for easier grip and safety. You have to find the right balance between an odor level you can handle and how much he loves it! You can also freeze them for teething help... worked for me... but caution on the stinkiest bullys!😂🤢 but they do love the the stinkiest the most!
Hi Becca
We used lots of frozen treats chews with yogurt or applesauce in it for the teething. Ya never know what the next item will be.
when that happens l make an applique of the hungry catapillar lol
oh, I love that idea!
Oh no Becca! Sorry I have no advice. As long as I block Ferris off from entering my craft room I'm all good. He thinks my garbage can is a good place for snacks to be found.
This is ANOTHER reason why the pups can’t be in the quilting room!
Try spraying on like some cayenne peppers water. Something spicy that he won't like and that should stop. You may not like it either for a while but at least it will wash out.
Hey, that's an awesome idea! I'll have to try it!
Good luck
Spray Bitter Apple on it, it is a dog freindly spray.
Thanks!
Appliqué, appliqué, appliqué!
Sorry you are having a hard time with your new puppy chewing your quilts, try giving him a water bottle to chew on or a dmall card board box n let him chew on it. Or make him his own quilt 😊
We've done that...he chews through *everything*. He's a 10 pound dog (a little Shih Tzu) and an *agressive* chewer. We keep VERY large bones in the home that he works through in literally NO TIME. We're trying to redirect him when ew see him going after fabric, taking the fabric way and replacing it with a toy/treat that he CAN gnaw on!
OH NO! That little stinker wanted a taste of a quilt. He probably want one of his own!
Hahaha! He could have just asked!
@@sewbecca Be careful when he has some stingy poop! LOL!
His mouth slipped
Hahaha
On no! Bad puppy! Someone needs a time out!!😖😫😩
Haha, he’s just being a puppy! 🐶 we’ve invested I. Some better toys and am working harder to redirect his chewing behavior!
@@sewbecca - It’s a good thing those darn puppies are always so stinkin’ adorable! So, that way you can’t be too mad at them!!! 😂😂😂
(Jayne) grandsons dog ate a few large holes in his quilt. I'm trying to fix it but I may have to down size it cause a 110lb dog makes bigger holes! Lol
Ooof, I can only imagine how big those holes are!
Yikes. Puppies do that.
Spray eucalyptus spray on it. Smells good to us, dogs don’t like it.
I have one that the patch is my favorite thing on it. Isn't that funny..
Sometimes, it's teh story of the quilt that makes it special to us!
