I might have to try this fabric! My husband and I are full time caregivers to my father who lives with us. Having something that could be wiped clean that isn’t cheap looking would be awesome and maybe save some of my table cloths!
@@sewbecca that’s awesome!!! You will have to do a tutorial on that one! I’ll bet there are a few of us out here in TH-cam Land that would be excited for it!!! 🥰
It would be! When I put this together, I was worried about quilting the laminated cotton - so I didn't add batting. But, after having put this together, I think I woul dbe ok (loosely) quilting with this fabric!
I purchased several 1 yarn cuts of Splash Fabric and have made car trash bags and cosmetics bags using the fabric to line the bags also. I absolutely love it. The fabrics are so beautiful and the line has corrordinating fabric. ❤
Great tutorial, but I like the cotton quilted place mats. I would go to dollar tree and buy vinyl placemats to eat on. Keep my pretty ones on the table. 💕
Loved this tutorial. Purchased some Splash fabric when Sew Yeah had a sale. Wasn’t sure what I was going to do with it. Thought market bags, but placemats might be a good thing. Thanks for this idea.
Well, this was a nice surprise! Great test of the Splash Fabric! Bonus that it’s that wide. I had heard of it but thought it was likely 42” or 45”. I I’ve heard Washi tape can be adhered to the bottom of the presser foot to help it glide over vinyl. I have some of the iron-on vinyl that I’m e had for a few years. I was planning on eventually using it on the inside of a shower tote for camping, but I’ve been hesitant to do so. I’ll save that vinyl for small projects and put Splash Fabric on my wish list. Stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
Really happy to see you sewing with this fabric. I love my quilted placemats and am fine just throwing them in the wash. But, I have a class at Sew Yeah on Saturday and already had plans to buy (invest) in a yard of it to make elastic bowl covers that I can reuse.
Would this fabric make a good, working, hooded, rain cape, poncho, or coat? A light color could protect someone from being hit by an auto. Would it leak ran around the seams?
Iron test: I did dry, no steam! As for patchworking the piece of fabric, I think you might be able to...but, I'd be worried about adding too many holes in the lamination part. If you want it water tight - I wouldn't patchwork with it.
I have some splash fabric and was going to make a small knapsack. Trying to decide if I should make one outside of the laminated and a lining of the same fabric OR make outside laminated and inside regular cotton. Thoughts?
Normally, yes - but in this case - they work just fine without the batting! There's enough substance with the lamination taht I didn't feel like it was needed. Also, had I put the batting in - I would ahve felt like I should quilt it...and I wasn't sure I wanted to put that many extra holes in the fabric. :)
@@sewbeccaThat's very interesting. I've actually never heard of this product, so you're bringing it to my attention. I have to try something like this. Be pretty cool. Make a nice tablecloth out of it.
Thanks, Becca! Excellent project for testing. I’d not yet heard of Splash Fabric yet so will be checking them out as soon as I have funds. Do you think using rubbing alcohol on the needle to clear any laminate that decides to go for a ride vs staying on the fabric would work? I bought a crapton of needles from Wawak one time on sale and am not keen to buy nonstick needles unless I must. Do you have any of Sew Be It Quilts True Lock squaring tools? I’m definitely intrigued. I don’t have the Block Locs or Clearly Perfect Slotted Trimmers so now I don’t know what to get. I have been using a 5x15 ruler or a 12-1/2” square ruler but they are both bulky for the smaller HSTs.
Didn't try it - actually, never have. With scotchguard, don't you still have to wash the fabric? With the laminated cotton - I can just wipe it away. :)
@@sewbecca It’s been years since using it. I believe it can handle a wipe. It waterproofs the fabric, water resistant. If it loses its magic just give it another spray. Seems cheaper and more available than specialty fabric.

Spoiler alert: I fully intend to use some of this fabric to make my Mother-in-law an adult bib!

@@sewbeccaPlease do a tutorial on the adult bib. My mom just moved into assisted living and I’d love to send her one.
This would be a great picnic quilt , thank you

Thank you for this! Didn't know about laminated cotton....and you did awesome explaining and showing it all! Well done!
Glad it was helpful!
Very thorough tutorial and great review of the splash fabric!
Thanks so much!
Ooooh this would be great fabric for making a lunch bag! 🤩
I think so too!

Car trash bags would be AWESOME! Thanks for the idea!
Becca would you consider doing a tutorial of teacup quilt blocks ???

You’re welcome 😊

Market bags would be great! Also, a toiletry bag, snack bag, apron...I can think of several projects!!
Scotch guard spray works it's awesome.
That's one option!
Nice fabrics. ❤️🇦🇺
Yes they are!
Yeah! Fixing a problem! 😊
Words cannot express how nice this fabric looks and feels! If you're looking for food safe laminated fabric - I highly recommend Splash Fabric!
I agree!
That looked much better than using vinal. Glad you told us about it.

I put batting in placemats as it helps absorb spills. Love your channel!❤
Great tip!

I think so, yes! I don't know if it would leak around the seams - but I should test that and it put it out there!
Great tutorial!❤
The iron test-- dry or steam? Can you patchwork piece the fabric? Or does it make too many holes so liquids can soak through the needle holes?

I’d do both laminated! That’s what I’m doing with my bag!!!
Hi, I have to ask why you stitch right off fabric on corners , is there some benefit to this , and do you do this in all your sewing
No real benefit other than I don’t have to measure where I stop and pivot. I mix it up - solely based on my preference at the time!
Great tutorial
Thank you!
What is the cutting tool that you're using?
What size of needle???
Thanks for a great video @SewBecca
I use an 80/12 on most everything! Including the laminated cotton!
Hope to see you at Quiltcon!
Cool!
@Becca How far is quilt con from the airport, do you guys know
I'm not familiar with Raleigh, but I heard 20 minutes.
Twenty minutes may not allow for traffic, depending on time of day.
Hi Becca. Great tutorial on this laminated fabric. Wouldn't you normally add batting to the inside of your placemats ?
Normally, yes - but in this case - they work just fine without the batting! There's enough substance with the lamination taht I didn't feel like it was needed. Also, had I put the batting in - I would ahve felt like I should quilt it...and I wasn't sure I wanted to put that many extra holes in the fabric. :)
I love your tutorial but I have a question. Can you throw them in the washer or dryer or do they just wipe clean? Replacements look great!
They just wipe clean! But, they can be washed (per Splash Fabric themselves!)

Maybe! Though, I'll be honest with the bit of sewing that I did, I didn't notice any gunk or build up!
Did Scotchgard not work for you?
Didn't try it - actually, never have. With scotchguard, don't you still have to wash the fabric? With the laminated cotton - I can just wipe it away. :)

Can you add batting and quilt the fabric?
Yes, of course! For these, I didn’t want the extra weight - and didn’t want to quilt it, so I left the batting out. :)
How many placemats could you get out of a half yard cut?
2, if you want them double sided. 4, if you don’t care about having them double sided.
@@sewbecca thank you! Good thing I asked. I wouldn’t have ordered enough.
Did I miss something? Did you text the fabric for spills?
It's laminated fabric - the liquid just wipes off. :)
Can you use pins on it.
I'm sure you could, but I would recommend clips just because once you puncture the laminate, you've kind of got a hole in the laminated portion!
“Words are hard today man”, 😂.
well, they are! LOL
Hey❤
What does the company say about ironing?
It’s safe to iron - they say just to keep the iron moving!
That’s why I don’t use placemats… I need them to be farmer proof!!
Hahaha! These might be farmer proof!
