Bangladesh - Dawn of Islamism | DW Documentary

  • In Bangladesh headlines are dominated by violence: Secular bloggers murdered by islamic extremists, government opponents disappear, the Hindu minority is under attack.
The country that wants to reconcile democracy and Islam appears to be finding it harder and harder to strike a balance between the two. Bangladesh was born in blood. The Bangladeshi government claims some three million people were killed during the 1971 war of liberation, though independent figures vary greatly. While Pakistan has remained an Islamic republic, Bangladesh made secularism a founding principle in the republic’s constitution. But conflict between Islamist and secular forces has plagued the country since its formation - and has a major impact on how it is perceived abroad. Annual economic growth has been at well over five percent for a decade; inward investment is flowing. Bangladesh is one of the world’s leading producers of garments and textiles. The government in Dhaka is keen to attract foreign cash. That fixation with inward investment also helps explain the refusal on the part of the political elite to recognize the growth of violent Islamism in the country. In 2016, Bangladesh experienced its worst terrorist attack to date. In Dhaka in the heart of the capital’s diplomatic quarter, terrorists murdered 20 people they’d taken hostage in a popular café, among them 18 foreigners. So-called Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack in Dhaka, but the Bangladeshi government continues to deny that there are IS or Al-Qaeda cells in the country. The political landscape of the country is currently shaped by the personal animosity between the two most powerful women in Bangladesh: Sheikh Hasina, who heads the Awami League, and Khaleda Zia from the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. When one of them holds the reins of power, the other regularly does all she can to bring government grinding to a halt by having the opposition dig in its heels. In a further twist to this tale Khaleda Zia was sentenced to five years in jail early February 2018, charged with misusing charitable funds. Khaleda Zia is also currently barred from taking part in parliamentary polls. The daughter of the country’s founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina has led the Bangladeshi government since 2009. She views herself as a mediator between secular and Islamist forces. But the brutal murder of bloggers critical of religion and the continuing restriction of democratic freedoms show how this balancing act is teetering - and could soon tip into disaster.

This reminds me of a quote that "When Muslims are minority they demand rights but when they're majority there isn't any minority rights."
Edit: Alright, that's enough. Nobody deserves hatred like this regardless of your faith. There's obviously good and bad both sides exist with us and no matter where you live, or what you believe, if you're a minority then you'll be treated harshly by the majority. That's the harsh reality. May peace prevails in every part of the duniya. My apologies for the misunderstanding in the previous comment.

I am from West Bengal, India. My ancestors were from Bangladesh. We came to India as refugees during 60's because of religious extremism. I heard so many stories about radicalism towards hindus. Before Indian independence there were about 30-40% hindu population but now it became 8%. This things are poisonous for the society, it takes a country towards backwardness. I hope one day Bangladesh will be free from this types of radicalsm. But one thing always hurts me that religion devides Old Bengal provinces into two countries. In 1905 we fought for the united Bengal against British colonialist, we own eventually but religion broke us.

It's weird that people will blame a religion based on the people who fall shut and misrepresent the religion, there is nothing wrong with the religion it's the people who choose their actions. Yes the reason people don't blame the religion is because they know what is in it! They know they can only blame themselves. You'll read many wanting to say the Koran is peaceful, and it says nothing about killing anyone, and do you know what? They're absolutely correct, if you were to just pick up the Koran and read it?, then yes, they'd find, that it is peaceful, and says nothing about killing anyone. But when you read the Koran, with the Hadiths, as intended, you see a completely different perspective. They find the Koran tells them not to make friendship with the Christians, or unbelievers.
It says, to kill the disbelievers, wherever you find them, and treat them harshly, fight and slay the pagans, seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them, in every stratagem for them. The Koran demands that they fight the Christians and unbelievers, and promises them, If there are twenty amongst them, they will vanquish two hundred, if a hundred, they will vanquish a thousand of them. Allah and his messenger want them to fight the Christians and the unbelievers, until they pay the Jizya, (a penalty tax for the non-Muslims living under Islamic rules) with willing submission, and until they feel themselves subdued.
Allah and his messenger announce that it's acceptable for them (Muslims) to go back on their promises, treaties and obligations, with the pagans, and tells them to make war on them, (whenever they find themselves strong enough to do so). Their God, Allah, tells them to fight the unbelievers and he, Allah, will punish them, by their own hands and will cover them all with shame, and will help them, (the Muslims) to victory over them.
The Koran takes away the freedom of belief from all humanity. And it relegates those who disbelieve in Islam, to hell, it calls them najis (filthy, untouchable, impure), and orders his followers to fight the unbelievers until no other religion, except Islam, is left. It says that the non-believers will go to hell, and they'll be forced to drink boiling water. It tells them to slay, crucify, or cut the hands, and feet, of the unbelievers, and tells them, they must be expelled from the land with disgrace, as they shall have a great punishment in the world hereafter.
And tells them (the unbelievers), that their garments will be set on fire and shall be cut from them, and there shall be poured over their heads, boiling water, (whereby whatever is in their bowels, with their skin, shall be dissolved from them). And tells (the unbelievers), they will be punished with hooked iron rods, they will not only will have disgrace in this life, but on the day of judgment, for he, Allah, shall make them taste the penalty of burning fire. The Koran says that those who invoke a god other than Allah, not only should meet punishment in this world, but the penalty on the day of judgment, will be doubled to them, and they will dwell therein, in ignominy. For those who believe not in Allah, (Most High), and his messenger, he has prepared, for those who reject Allah, a blazing fire!.
Although they are asked to be compassionate amongst each other, they're also told they have to be harsh with their Christian, Jewish, and Atheist, colleagues. - As for him who does not believe in Islam?, the Prophet announces with a stern command: - "Seize ye him, and bind ye him, and burn ye him, in the blazing fire". Further, "make him march in a chain with a length of seventy cubits". This was he, that would not believe in Allah, (Most High), and he, who would not encourage the feeding of the indigent! So no friend hath he here, this day, nor hath he any food, except the corruption from the washing of wounds, which none do eat, but those in sin.
The Koran prohibits a Muslim from befriending a non-believer, even if that non-believer is the father or the brother of that Muslim. Their holy book tells them to be disobedient towards the disbelievers and their governments. And orders them to strive against the unbelievers with great endeavour, and be stern with them, because they belong to Hell. Their holy Prophet prescribes fighting for them, and tells them that it is good for them, even if they dislike it. He advises them to strike off the heads off the disbelievers, and after making a wide slaughter amongst them, carefully tie up the remaining captives.
Their God Allah has promised to instil terror into the hearts of the unbelievers and has ordered the Muslim to smite above their necks, and smite all their fingertips off them. He also assures them, that when they kill in his name, it is not they who slay them, but Allah, in order that he might test the believers by a gracious trial from Himself. He orders them to strike terror into the hearts of the enemies. He has made the Jihad mandatory, and warns them that unless they go forth, (for Jihad), he will punish them with a grievous penalty, and just put others in their place.
Allah speaks to their Holy Prophet and says, “O Prophet! Strive hard against the unbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern against them. Their abode is hell - an evil refuge indeed”. He promises them, that in the fight for his cause, whether they slay or are slain, they'll return to the garden of Paradise. In Paradise, he will Wed them with Houris, (celestial virgins), pure beautiful ones, and unite them with large-eyed beautiful ones, while they recline on their thrones set in lines.
There they are promised to eat and drink pleasantly for what they did. He also promises boys like hidden pearls and youth never altering in age, like scattered pearls, (for those who have paedophiliac inclinations). As you see, Allah has promised all sorts or rewards, like gluttony, and unlimited sex to Muslim men who kill unbelievers in his name. They will be admitted to Paradise, where they shall find goodly things, beautiful ones, pure ones, confined to the pavilions that man has not touched them before nor jinni.
As for women?, the book of Allah says that they are inferior to men, and their husbands have the right to scourge them if they are found disobedient. It teaches that women will go to hell if they are disobedient to their husbands. It maintains that the men have an advantage over the women. It not only denies the women’s equal rights to their inheritance, it also regards them as imbeciles, and decrees that their witness is not admissible in the courts of law. This means that a woman, who is raped, cannot accuse her rapist unless she can produce a male witness. Their Holy Prophet allows them to marry up to four wives, and he licensed them to sleep with their slave maids, and as many ‘captive’ women as they may have. Even if those women are already married. He himself did just that.
      Peaceful.

@@jogabneymar4994 TRUTH ONLY. Crimes against humanity in India, today, are catastrophic. They cry, and they all lie about the people that built their country from the ground up? They say the British stole from India? Another lie, the British created India great wealth through trade. Indian traders with the British covered the world together, creating great wealth, wealth then taken by the Indian princes, and divided between those families, never shared, or used to help the population. We have all the former ledgers from the old East India company, showing us what was paid and traded?
British medical stations and supplies to India, can be said to be responsible for the survival of many minorities in India. The entire infrastructure, right across India, was not paid for by India? But by the British, much of which is still the only infrastructure found in many parts of India, (as under their own rule, those things were never seen as important, as they catered for the poor).
They all accuse the British of stealing? While the British actually build their country up from nothing but tribal people, to a united people, paid for by the British through their own financial institutes. The hypocrisy is simply something else.
During World War I, British India, quite rightly (as it was a world war, nobody exempt), contributed to the British war effort by providing men and resources. Thousands of Indian soldiers and labourers served in Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, while both the Indian administration and the princes of India sent large supplies of food, money, and ammunition. However, Bengal and Punjab, remained sources of anti-colonial activities.
Revolutionary attacks in Bengal, associated increasingly with disturbances in Punjab, were significant enough to nearly paralyse the regional administration. Of these, a pan-Indian mutiny in the British Indian Army planned for February 1915 was the most prominent amongst a number of plots formulated between 1914 and 1917 by Indian nationalists in India and in the United States and Germany.
The planned February mutiny was ultimately thwarted when British intelligence infiltrated the Ghadarite movement, arrested key figures. Mutinies in smaller units and garrisons within India were also crushed.
In the scenario of the British war effort during WW1 and the threat from the militant movement in India, the Defence of India Act 1915 was passed, limiting civil and political liberties. Michael O'Dwyer, then the Lieutenant Governor of Punjab, was one of the strongest proponents of the act, in no small part due to the Ghadarite threat in the province.
With the Germans, many Indians were part of the Hindu-German Conspiracy (look it up). That was a series of terrorist plans between 1914 and 1917 by Indian nationalist groups to attempt a Pan-Indian rebellion against the British Raj during World War I, formulated between the Indian revolutionary underground and exiled or self-exiled nationalists who formed in the United States in the Ghadar Party, and in Germany.
The Indian independence committee, in the decade preceding the Great War. Saw the conspiracy drawn up at the beginning of the war, with extensive support from the German Foreign Office, the German consulate in San Francisco, as well as some support from Ottoman Turkey, and the Irish republican movement. The most prominent plan attempted to foment unrest and trigger a "Pan-Indian" mutiny in the British Indian Army, from Punjab to Singapore.
This plot was planned to be executed in February 1915 with the aim of overthrowing British rule over the Indian subcontinent.
Other related events, include the 1915 Singapore Mutiny, the Annie Larsen arms plot, the Jugantar-German plot, the German mission to Kabul, the mutiny of the Connaught Rangers in India, as well as, by some accounts, the Black Tom explosion in 1916. Parts of the conspiracy included efforts to subvert the British Indian Army in the Middle Eastern theatre of World War I.
The Indo-Germanic alliance and the conspiracy were the target of a worldwide British intelligence effort, which was successful in preventing further attempts. American intelligence agencies arrested key figures in the aftermath of the Annie Larsen affair in 1917. The conspiracy resulted in the Lahore conspiracy case trials in India, as well as the Hindu-German Conspiracy Trial-(at the time the longest and most expensive trial ever held in the United States). This series of events was consequential to the Indian independence movement.
Though largely subdued by the end of World War I, it came to be a major factor in reforming the Raj's Indian policy. Similar efforts were made during World War II, in Germany, and in Japanese-controlled Southeast Asia, where Subhas Chandra Bose formed the Indische Legion and the Indian National Army, respectively, and in Italy, where Mohammad Iqbal Shedai formed the Battaglione Azad Hindoustan.
India is simply a nation of fools, and a nation of people who have no empathy for all those they continue to slaughter daily. Kashmiri women are amongst the worst sufferers of sexual violence in the world. Sexual violence has been routinely perpetrated on Kashmiri women, with 31.6% of respondents saying they were “victims of sexual abuse”.
Due to the impact of the conflict, a number of people in the valley suffer from various psychological problems like stress (normal or related to traumatic event), anxiety, mood, and post-traumatic disorders. At the beginning of the insurgency, there were 1200 patients in the valley's sole mental hospital. In 2016, the hospital is said to have been overcrowded, with more than 200,000 patients. A 2010 US State Department report, cited extrajudicial killings by security forces in areas of conflict, such as Kashmir, as a major human rights problem in India.
The British parliament expressed its sadness and regret over the discovery of over 6,000 unmarked mass graves in Kashmir. Something that was always prevented under British rule, for over 250 years in Kashmir, India.
Another unknown fact today? Every year since the British left India, India has killed/murdered more of its own people per year, (mostly females), than ever died in a single year under British rule. Clearly showing us that the actual Indian people themselves, were far safer under British rule, than they are even today, under their own rule.

"It will be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God." (Mat 19:24)

Russia has never won wars because they have the most skilled fighters, have the most brilliant commanders or the most efficient supply lines. Closer to the opposite is the norm for them. They've always benefited massively from having a huge land mass with brutal weather that they can keep retreating back into when an invader win battles, they had a huge population that could always absorb loss after loss and keep coming back with more troops and they have a population that knows nothing but suffering and is prepared to endure more of it. These have always been the keys to Russian victory.
Now things are different. Russia still has the large land mass, but this does not help them in offensive wars. The Russian population is half of what it used to be, and really much less than that since Russian women barely have kids anymore. Losses by the military are not easily replaced like they used to be, and the loss of an only child is felt much more severely by Russian families. The people are not as willing to endure endless hardship as their grandfathers and great-grandfathers used to be. If you read quran you will see it is indeed a peaceful religion.if Muslims don't follow Islam properly its their fault we shouldn't blame religion for that.

I don't know where you heard that from but Islam dosen't say that, In the Holy book of Islam (Al-Quran), there's an entire inscription about disbelievers (non-Muslims) but nothing is said about forcing someone to be a Muslim, even in the whole book, nothing is said about forcing someone to be a Muslim. And, if you don't believe me, you can google it.
Islamic law prohibits forced conversion, following the Quranic principle that there is "no compulsion in religion" (Quran 2:256)
      This is what google says.
And, if you still don't believe that Islam dosen't allow forced conversion, you can read the Quran and know more about Islam before you JUDGE it.

I would support CAA if it also allowed persecuted liberal bloggers. Talking about LGBT rights in Bangladesh can get you killed. Where will those writers go if not India? But CAA doesn't recognize LGBT people and claims to be pro persecuted minorities? This shows that it is not pro persecuted minorities. It is simply anti muslim, anti Assamese.

BTW opposing CAA n NRC in their current form isnt really leftist!! Its simply humanist!!
Now coming back to topic, the original commenter hasnt at all mentioned about CAA, NRC, UCC..he only said that people expect secularism from only india in response to religion driven atrocities carried out in another country!! Its logically imperative to then understand for anyone with any analytical abilities that he wants people to ignore atrocities committed on minorities in india via hindu majoritarianism..that only means that he would like the same treatment metted out to indian hindu fundamentalists as that done by bangladeshi govt to islamic fundamentalists, i.e. providing a blanket protective layer to the fundamentalists!! That then amounts to him wanting india going the same way as other islamic countries where relogious fundamentalism holds sway without any accountability for the violence and oppression they cause!!

Did our women folks not cover up with their own cultural attires like the sari, ... etc. regardless of what religion they belonged to? I think of myself as a Bengali first. My relationship with the Devine does not need to be defined by a religion. I never saw my grand parents but i found a proxy, a Hindu sister and brother who were about their age had they lived. They were from Kolkata but formerly from Bangladesh pre partition. They were love personified. I find these arguments about religion so silly because we fail to see the humans people are. Islamophobia is valid and very reasonable. Islam is a very real threat to those outside of it.
