  • Mubin Shaikh was “bit by the jihadi bug” when he was 19. Born and raised in Canada, he traveled to Pakistan to study Islam - and there found himself captivated by a group of extremists who encouraged him to embrace a violent and skewed interpretation of the religion. In his talk, Shaikh shares the story of how he was de-radicalized, and eventually became an undercover counterterrorism operative for the CIA.

@Mohammad Faizan ok ; then worry about people who pick up weapons in the name of jihad while quran clearly states that jihad is the battle with your inner shaitan. Worry about the people who misinterpret the sayings of prophet mohammed(pbuh).
Vedas never prohibited idol worship !!!!! although it is the lowest form of worship.
We never took rama or krishna as gods they are "avatars" that's why vaishnavaism(worshippers of lord vishnu) and rudraism(worshippers of lord shiva) exist as supreme sects. The holy trinity is the greatest and symbolises the entities(in space) which led to formation of the earth.
Yes we worship a human ,human like me, human like you, HUMAN LIKE PROPHET MOHAMMED(pbuh)
You would have known that there's nothing wrong in polythiesm if you would have realised that we worship books, nature ,animals etc.(we happen to give them names) each of whom have more contribution towards our existence than your prophet mohammed(pbuh) or my ram.
What would your god do if I don't believe in Islam ??send me to hell?? I am ready but would not accept Islam.
What happens to you if you don't belive in my god?? Nothing , just keep doing good deeds and good karma.

I like how this man literally said that a sheikh explaining the verses is what got him out of extremism. Just as those new members like him, without any further research, read those verses, got told what it meant and formed their opinions based on just that, you guys are doing the same. It's really ironic.
What is often ignored is that those verses talk about wars, wars which were way more justified than our "morally good countries" fight today, like the enemies breaking of the constitution of Medina(A document which you can look up, notice how nice it is to non-muslims btw.). Ontop of that, 8:61 says: "If the enemies is inclined towards peace, make peace with that.". Something which countries of today don't do. You can see in the letters of Muhammad(Which you can look up) that he stayed true to this historically (Submitting in the letter of Heraclius meant to god btw, not to Muhammad.). Ontop of that, in verses like 4:89, which, once again, was revealed during war, you can see just how many conditions had to be met before the killing. Something which countries of today don't do.
Please don't take what you read and hear for granted, it divides us much more than it needs to, there are nearly 2 billion muslims, we need to get to know one another.
As for homosexuality, nowhere in the quran does it tell us how to, or even if we should punish it. It does condemn it. The reason the west accepted it is because "Well, it does not seem to harm others.", but we don't know if it does. For example, this *may* be how it can harm others: Sexual orientation in identical twins can differ, so sexual orientation can be influenced. By accepting and promoting homosexuality we might influence the sexual orientation of other people. We also know that STDs are more common in homosexuals, likely due to anal sex(which is forbidden even for straight people in Islam). If these diseases do enough harm, it could outweigh the happiness people get from homosexual sex. And that is just 1 way it *could* cause more suffering than happiness. So we can't say that Islam is wrong for condemning it. (I'm not saying that we know condemning it is right either btw.)
Once again, please don't take what you read and hear for granted. Just because politics says something is good, doesn't mean that we're certain that it is good at all.Something which countries of today don't do.

I respect that you showed up and speak about your story, The extremists doesn’t know that they harm the Islamic religion by their acts and tarnish its reputation. God, who we believe that he is the most merciful and the most compassionate, does not accept that we acts and do actions in his name and we think that we are doing it for God’s sake, while that actions in the same time its make others scare , feel uncomfortable or guides them to hate Islam,
And please you have to stop gathering in groups and shouting Takbeeer takbeeer WTH is going on?! . Who told you that Muslims have to gather and shout takbeer takbeer using God’s name to prove something or get self benefits ? If you want to say god is the greatest You can say Allahw akbar in your heart or in your normal sound ! why you are shouting and bothering others?! . There is no need for these scenes that make People hate us and hate hearing allah Akbar , especially People of the book. Actually I do not live in a European or any western country, but I have all respect for them, so you have to respect that they welcome you and their countries was for you the Safe place and became home so keep it safe and please do not be Parrots, stop repeating of what you have been taught and indoctrinated keep researching and don’t accept to be forced to do things.
This is from Quran and God saying to prophet Mohammed that do not join any groups and do not do ones and you don’t belong to them , Muslims have to be normal don’t make groups .
Indeed, those who have divided their religion and become sects - you, [O Muḥammad], are not [associated] with them in anything. Their affair is only [left] to Allah; then He will inform them about what they used to do.

What about people with older books?
Everyone like to claim superiority in their own way. Everyone needs to evolve. And, the evolution of people as a group leads to the evolution of social paradigms and most significantly religion.
I sometimes feel pity for Muslims. I understand that it is a not a great choice of word. Perhaps most honest to my true feelings. I have been a lifelong Atheist and I have come to appreciate a lot of good people from any and all religious background. But, I think it is open truth that religion has indeed been a source of petty childish conflict. In the recent past if not much farther we have seen that a lot of violence perpetrated was in the name of Islam. While it is not ideal or any more worse than the current perspective, emergence of similar violence from other religious groups is only natural although seemingly undesirable. If they feel threatened and have started preparing or building an aggressive front, muslims will to start the talk by self contemplating on the history and present reality of Islam in India.
Preaching and practicing peace are not diametrically opposite ideas and perhaps the people of your book can start with that.

Islam should change the concepts of God, humans and heaven.
FIRST, God is not someone up there called by only one name Allah and is only for 'believers' but he is the universal, infinite soul of super-intelligent , superconsciousness everywhere within his creation from which everything emanated from billions of years ago and will one day the universe will dissolve back into this superconsciousness. Think of black holes in the universe where galaxies and stars get sucked into nothingness gradually. God is eternal. He is also within each and every one of us in the core or 'nucleus' of our individual consciousness or soul, waiting to be awakened within. God is not a wrathful, angry punisher but a pure lover who loves all his souls unconditionally. He is absolute truth and pure all-inclusive, immanent love.
SECOND, we are not this body but we are actually individual, intelligent consciousness or souls who take on different bodies to experience the temporariness of matter and ultimately realize the permanence of merging our consciousness with the superconsciousness. . We are also eternal as souls. When clothed in a material body, we have EGO which is actually an extension of matter. Matter is made of atoms and molecules that cling to each other giving rise to the 'I' ness and 'mine' ness in us. Ego produces anger, greed, lust, avariciousness, stealing, grabbing, not-sharing, hatred etc. All scriptures tell man to overcome one's ego to see the spiritual in us and around us. 'Kill the non-believer' verses should not be interpreted literally but metaphorically to mean kill your ego to see the true spiritual self and the true spiritual, universal God. Kill your ego at the 'altar of God'. We are limited by our material senses to comprehend the infinite and hence man will naturally have different concepts of the infinite. Hence it is natural to have many beliefs. We each need to seek him within to comprehend the infinite, not by killing 'non-believers' but by seeking him within each and everyone of us.
THIRD, there is no heaven or hell. There is only heavenly states or hellish states of mind. Heaven and hell are actually on earth by what we humans make of our lives and the lives of all others by loving everyone and all of his creation in sharing the abundance given by him.
Think universal. Not narrow and parochial.

First great presentation by the Ted talk speaker. Keep up the good work! As Muslims and everyone else as well we should support our governments where ever it is that we stay. Show them respect as they have given us respect to live peacefully together. Don't protest in a way to disrupt day to day activities, do it on the side peacefully without bothering others. It's not easy running a country or government so chill out and if you have an issue go get a job and pay your taxes, just look at how hard it is running a family or the place you work at. Imagine how difficult it must be for a leader and the board to get things done to keep the economy and country in a good state.

According to Muslim Canon Law the world is divided into two camps, Dar-ul-Islam (abode of Islam) and Dar- ul-Harb (abode of war). A country is Dar-ul-Islam when it is ruled by Muslims. A country is Dar-ul-Harb when Muslims only reside in it but are not rulers of it. That being the Canon Law of the Muslims, India cannot be the common motherland of the Hindus and the Musalmans. It can be the land of the Musalmans-but it cannot be the land of the ‘Hindus and the Musalmans living as equals’. Further, it can be the land of the Musalmans only when it is governed by the Muslims. The moment the land becomes subject to the authority of a non-Muslim power, it ceases to be the land of the Muslims. Instead of being Dar-ul-Islam, it becomes Dar-ul-Harb. It must not be supposed that this view is only of academic interest. For, it is capable of becoming an active force capable of influencing the conduct of the Muslims. It did greatly influence the conduct of the Muslims when the British occupied India. The British occupation raised no qualms in the minds of the Hindus. But so far as the Muslims were concerned, it at once raised the question whether India was any longer a suitable place of residence for Muslims. A discussion was started in the Muslim community, which Dr Titus says lasted for half a century, as to whether India was Dar-ul-Harb or Dar-ul-Islam. (p. 294). He then points out another injunction, Jihad (crusade), by which it becomes ‘incumbent on a Muslim ruler to extend the rule of Islam until the whole world shall have been brought under its sway’. ‘Technically, it is the duty of the Muslim ruler, who is capable of doing so, to transform Dar-ul-Harb into Dar- ul-Islam. There are instances showing that they have not hesitated to proclaim Jihad. The curious may examine the history of the Mutiny of 1857 and if he does, he will find that, in part, at any rate, it was really a Jihad proclaimed by the Muslims against the British, and that the Mutiny, so far as the Muslims were concerned, was a recrudescence of revolt which had been fostered by Sayyed Ahmad who preached to the Musalmans for several decades that owing to the occupation of India by the British the country had become a Dar-ul-Harb. The Mutiny was an attempt by the Muslims to reconvert India into a Dar-ul-Islam. Not only can they proclaim Jihad but they can call the aid of a foreign Muslim power to make Jihad a success, or if the foreign Muslim power intends to proclaim a Jihad, help that power in making its endeavour a success (pp. 295-296). He then draws attention to the third tenet ‘that Islam does not recognise territorial affinities’. This background analysis will come handy when we analyse the happenings in 2019-20. Suffice to say that hardly any Indian intellectual analysed Islam with the objectivity that Dr Ambedkar did. He was critical of Hinduism as well, but his sharpest analysis was reserved for Islam. He could see the imperialistic and irrational side of Islam without a hint of political correctness, unlike those in the Congress, including Mahatma Gandhi.

Human beings of all religions, have a conscience and an ability to empathize with our fellow human beings, even when it means, going against our tribal loyalties, and caring about those who we are told should be our enemies. As A Christian I have been deeply horrified by some of things Christians have done and i could never support them. . God bless you we need more people who connect with each other as human beings first, because that's what we ultimately are. Extreme Islamist ideology can be very dangerous because it dehumanizes the "other" but this also happens just as much with racism, and extreme nationalism. All these things are evil. One humanity.

Wrong interpretation without context of quranic verses can drive u on wrong path. Example - salafists
Right interpretation with context and rightful guidance from right scholar can drive u on path of heaven.

i think, the main problem of common muslims and including most of their Quranic scholars, are too much "legalistic," (fiqh oriented), as if ayatollah (god guidance) is only one: al Quran (holy scripture). factually, God him self, in very first revelation to Muhammad, is not asking Muhammad to study (iqra) the holy Quran (cos the kitab doesn't exist at that day), instead He command Muhammad to study (iqra) other ayatullah, we called as ayat Kauniyah (universe and all of His Creations in it). That why in serious and encyclopedic Islamic traditional school, we always taught that beside al Quran, there is another god guidance (ayatullah) called ayat kauniyah (the universe and all god creation in it). and for qur'anic scholars, we also know --from al Quran it self, there are two others god guidance (ayatullah), that we as muslims should seek for God Guidances: called as ayat insaniyah (human being) and ayat tarikhiyyah (human history).
if common muslims and it scholars, uses all 4 God Guidance in balanced ways, we will not always fall into legalistic point of view when we talking or examining Islam point of view about woman/feminism, politics, evolution, LGBTQ issues, democracy, secularism, separation between religion and state. etc. for me, if sociology, political science, statistics, history on the rise and fall of civilizations/countries (as interpreters of ayat kauniyah and ayat tarikhiyyah) comes to the conclusion that democracy with separation between religion and state, is the best political system in the world for advancement human civilizations, then all Muslims should choose democracy with separation between religion and state, as preferable political system to practice in all Muslims majority countries.
also if expert on biology, doctors, psychiatry, etc (as interpreter of ayat kauniyah and ayat insaniyah) , said that beside man and woman (as gender), we also has intersex, hemaprodyte, woman with more testosterones, man with more X chromosome, etc, then all Muslims should choose to agree that god him self gave us guidance / ayat that beside man and woman as gender, there also another genders/pronouns that we should cherish, protect, and respect (cos if we don't respect others God Creations, are similarly with we don't respect our God as their Creator).
if we stubborn, only picks, one ayatullah, we called al Quran (holy scripture/ayat Qauliyah), as the one and only god guidance to follow, then muslims and it scholars, will always fall upon into legalistic point of view (fiqh oriented) when we examining what is islamic point view on everything under the sky. wahabbiyah, isis, al Qaida, etc are trapped in this narrow point of view about Islam and its believe. of course, for responsible and encyclopedic islamic teaching, all those narrow point views on Islam are wrong (at least incomplete), misguided, and disrespecting God.
umar bin khattab, as on of few sahabah (closed friend of Prophet), several times choose to disregarding some textual issues stated clearly in al Quran, and pick other decision after he choosed as Muhammad successor, as leader (khalifah/amir), if there are more fairer and more justice way (socially) on making decision as Amir/Leader, rather than choose from what already state very clear in al Quran. he always choose more fairer and more justice, even others sahabah question his decision. and as we know it, umar bin khattab is one of several sahabah (closed friend of Prophet) that guaranteed (informed) by the Prophet that he is going to heaven. his way of leadership decision, was a hard evidence that the closest friend to Muhammad, also not only consider holy scripture (ayat Qauliyah), but also social aspect, fairness, and justice (ayat kauniyah), when he making decision as a leader.
nobody in umar bin khattab time, dare to called umar bin khattab as heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel. but in modern era, several of loud muslims, loud muslim scholars, and most of jihadist will immediately call us heretic/bid'ah, kuffar, or infidel if we also uses 3 other God Guidances beside ayat Qauliyah, when we speak, analyze, examining islamic point of view on everything under the sun. how strange is it, if we following completes God Guidance's, then be called as infidel, kuffar, or bid'ah. legalistic approach (fiqh oriented) on Islam has bad impact on advancement of Islamic civilization, and has backward effect on development of its peoples: the Muslims. but yes, in Islamic jurisprudence (ushul fiqh), we also has similar concept with Umar way, but unfortunately has more narrowed approach and clearly far from sufficient to be implemented in modern era, we call them: maslahah mursalah (public good principle) and maqashid syariah (ratio legal over legal specific).
if muslims also incorporate social science, biology, technology, history, political science, psychology, etc (as part of rightful interpreter all of God Guidancs/ayatullah), many problem we faced today in many part of Muslim countries, will be addressed in responsible way. Muhammad him self, in his own word (Hadits Bukhari Collection no 6015), muslims should follow person with specific expertise on handling matter, so let political scientist handle political matter, health matter should handle by doctors, etc. do not let everything under authority of quranic expert. in general, muslim should treat expert on other ayatullah (scientist as rightful interpreter whole universe and all of His Creations in it, as rightful interpreter human being behavior and it history) equal to expert on holy scripture (al quran). Furthermore, on all wide range of social issues, every new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, should supersede (abrogate) any old interpretation from holy scripture, cos all of every new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist, are also rightful interpreter of God Guidance (ayatullah). falling to do so, should be interpreted as a disqualified argument/opinion.
Many argument/opinion base on fiqh (islamic legal specific), kalam (theology) and falsafah (philosophy), factually in most areas are quite obsolete for addressing social, economic, and political problem in modern era, cos most of them are derived only from ayat Qauliyah (Quranic centric), which is an incomplete way to sorting our problem in modern era. Most of old argument/opinion already supersede/abrogated by new founding/understanding as result from responsible research by scientist. Muslims should back to the complete of God Guidance in balance way on solving problem in Muslims world, not only using holy scripture as final say. and stop kuffar/infidel calling game, cos that game from a complete, genuine, and responsible interpretation of 4 God Guidances, is simply un islamic.
and, as an open end conclusion, there is a deeper question: why common muslims and its scholars dare to disregarding 3 other God Guidances? why muslims and its scholars become legalistic (only focus on 1 ayatullah / 1 God Gudance (ayat Qauliyah) called alquran, as if salvation of a civilization fate can be and must be depend on 1 cause only? as brief answer is: corruption and abuse of power by people in high power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers. all of them, almost single handedly creates and propagate common muslims and its scholars into disregarding 3 other God Guidances.
peoples in power, it cronies, and big business that closed to muslim countries rulers push and push relentlessly to narrow interpretation on morals and public interest thru perverted interpretation on the holy scripture. even, they dare to appoint unqualified islamic scholar as qadi for them to uses as fatwa producers in favors to their vested interest. since then, islamic civilization goes down spiral into inevitable decline from it's greatness. many fatwa produced in their regime will makes serious, genuine, and responsible islamic scholar scratching their head and shocked. fatwa on mihnah policy, etc, is among of perverted interpretation on holy scripture. it lead to tradition/repetition on using narrow interpretation islamic law for beating and punishing dissent and discontent on social injustice in islamic society.
furthermore, it lead islamic society to become close minded, anti science, and trapped in textual approach tradition on just 1 god guidance called al quran (ayat Qauliyah) only, with narrow and more narrow interpretation. common muslim today and it scholar today are the real victims of their legacy. lets wake them up, by spreading the real genuine of God Guidances and it's rightful interpreters. amen.

Let me clarify what the Quran has to say (remember I am not a scholar)
there is no compulsion (force) in religion
    (Quran 2:256)
Whoever Kills one Man. Killed humanity. And whoever saved one man has saved whole mankind.
    (Surah-Al-Mayidah 32)
Spend the cause of God (charity to the poor) and do not contribute to your destruction with your own hands, but do good, for God loves those who do good (virtuous)
    (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:195)
As you see. Extremism is not Islam. Islam promotes peace. They are the misinterpretation of the Quran.

No matter what religion we subscribe to, we are all worshipping the same God. Spoiler Alert: Allah from the Quran and God from the Bible are the same Entity. Throughout history God has sent ambassadors, or prophets, in attempts to convey His teachings. Once these prophets pass away, these holy teachings are then corrupted, or hijacked, by followers who alter these truths with their own selfish ideas. Whoever believes that God will reward u for killing nonbelievers has been lied to. The meaning of life is love. God is love.
