  • Is the so-called "Islamic State" aiming to use the Philippines as its bridgehead in Asia? IS took control of the predominantly Muslim city of Marawi in 2017, and it took the Philippine army five months to take it back.
We report from a country that the so-called "Islamic State" apparently wants to use as a bridgehead to spread its ideology in Asia. Marawi's total destruction made the Philippine state look weak and incapable of defending its own territory. The IS fighters may have been defeated, but the grueling house-to-house fighting against a well-equipped army supported by the USA was a propaganda coup for the Caliphate. Martial law still applies on Mindanao, the second largest island in the south of the Philippines where Marawi is located. More than 60,000 of the city’s inhabitants are still living in refugee camps or other emergency shelters, and reconstruction could take years. The terrorist group’s capture of Marawi was the climax to an old, religiously charged conflict that IS did not cause but was able to exploit. A feud between local Muslim inhabitants and Christian colonial rulers and settlers from the north of the archipelago has been smoldering in the south of the Philippines for more than 400 years. Many Muslims still complain about the discrimination they face from a mainly Catholic society, which is an ideal environment for the recruitment of new fighters for jihad. The fact that the Islamists' black flag flew over Marawi for 154 days could boost radical forces throughout the entire region. IS terrorists are also targeting neighboring Indonesia. And Rodrigo Duterte, a president better known for his toughness than his talent for peace making, is pouring fuel on the flames.

The Philippines has 98 million christians and around 5 to 6 million muslims, the religious conflicts are situated only in Mindanao (South) and not in the central (Visayas) and northern regions (Luzon) of the country, What I cant understand is the current administrations support of creating an autonomous muslim region (Bangsamoro) in Mindanao, We already have a Muslim Autonomous Region which has failed and now they want to create Bangsamoro with more autonomy, I mean even some muslim majority areas voted against being part of Bangsamoro. The Government is just appeasing a faction (Moro Separatists) of the muslim community, not all muslims in mindanao support Bangsamoro.

And many people also from other parts of the Philippines belive that the whole Mindanao is under the newly formed Bangsamoro Autonimous Region in Muslim Mindanao, but in reality its only the parts of former ARMM and other provinces and Barangays that joins the plebecite that forms the new BARMM.

The current situation in Mindanao is so complicated. First of all, the war in Marawi is not a battle between the religion. It is just a war between Philippine republic and the muslim-radicals who wants to establish an "Islamic State" here in the Southeast asia. And then you have this problem of extreme poverty, that's why some locals are getting recruited by this extremists.

It's the wahhabi fanatics that give mindanao a bad name. The muslims in mindanao are just as friendly as other filipino ethnic or tribal groups. It's the toxic wahhabism who are politicizing islam the problem not islam itself. The muslims in the philippines have followed sufism for hundreds of years and they've lived with the animists and other non-muslims in mindanao in harmony for hundreds of years. And majority of the muslims in the philippines today are sunni ashairah. They are quite moderate and tolerant. It's the wahhabists the real problem there because they want to shove islam on everyone's throats.

"The Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), under the leadership of Nur Misuari, started the contemporary Moro rebellion in the 1970s. In its fight against the Philippine state, the group’s early supporter was an external actor, namely, Malaysia. As the Philippine sources reported, Malaysia supplied the Moro fighters with weapons and ammunition to fight the Philippine army.1 There was also evidence that Moro fighters were trained by the Malaysians in Pulau Pangkor and Sabah.2 In addition, Malaysia became the initial conduit for internationalizing the plight of the Moro people and the struggle of the MNLF. In 1972, Tunku Abdul Rahman, then Malaysian Prime Minister and Secretary-General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), raised the Moro case to the OIC members and convinced them to support it.3Likewise, Tun Abdul Razak bin Hussein, another Prime Minister of Malaysia, called for the same appeal during the Islamic Summit Conference in Pakistan in 1974. He stated, “We seek to give our Muslim brothers a rightful place in a peaceful world.”4 In the same way, the Moros saw the Malaysians as their natural allies, a perception based on their common ethnic ties.5 Their shared religion served as another factor in establishing close relations.6Accordingly, their bond served the MNLF in their battle against the Philippine state since it provided international support and legitimacy to the group."

DW: " We asked ourselves, who does the land really belonged to. To the Muslims whose ancestors civiled in Mindanao in the 13th century? Or to the Christians who came much later but now account to the majority of the island's population?"
STUPID QUESTION! The Mindanao has been populated already by their ancestors even before Islam and Christianity came to the island. Their ancestors were already there. Islam and Christianity as religions don't inhabit a land. It is the people who inhabit the land and their ancestors are those people. Regardless of which religion the ancestors converted to, the land belongs to them and their descendants, not to the Muslims and not to the Christians.
The Muslim's logic that "Islam was first there before Christianity therefore Mindanao must belong to the Muslims" is not just a fallacy but also a dangerously unjust fallacy. In fact, what those leaders of the rebels and the few corrupt influential families in Mindanao really want is to claim the whole land for themselves, like Kings. The Philippine constitution is the only thing that preventing them from doing so.

The Government does not negotiate with terrorist because theres no point of doing so. If you threaten the national security of the country you only have two choices surrender or die, there's no such thing as negotiation. When you said we will burn marawi if you don't get what you want, Duterte replied go ahead burn it, his statement does not mean burn it I don't care about the people there. He is implying two things, what he basically means you will not get what you want no matter what and 2nd you if you do that we will show you what the government can do to you.

Exactly as was said by the enemy they wear no uniforms and this makes it difficult to distinguish them, the enemy! Obviously this is troubling as the media sadly easily distorts these enemy fatalities as non fighters. It is this same problem in all war zones throughout the world.

DW, do proper research. The conflict in Southern Philippines is not between the Christian majority and the Muslim minority. It's between a minority of Muslims and the government. Christians and Muslims mixed and lived together in relative peace and harmony for centuries. Moreover, the conflict did not start because of religion. It is about land.

Well, "pinpointed" using decades-old propeller planes & dumb/unguided bombs. Unfortunately, even army units fell to friendly fire due to that, causing a pause in the air-raids until investigations & improvements could be made.
Also, majority of the Armed Forces of the Philippines' training & experience was destroying terrorists & Maoist-militia members in jungles. Urban warfare is a significantly difficult ball game.
Personally, I have much respect for these troops defeating Islamic State despite the mitigating factors while the terrorists attempted to make Marawi the new capital of the "province" of the Philippines, global Islamic State.

What's the point in targeting empty buildings, wasting munitions and destroying people's property... Does not make any military/common sense.

@@N192K001 Equipment age has nothing to do with Fratricide. It is just another inevitable event in war. During Desert Storm, two British warrior combat vehicles were repeatedly attacked by US A10s, and another being US AH-64 Apache attacking US soldiers, killing two and 6 wounded comes to mind.
A more recent report from the US Army on fratricide incidents says that from 2001 to 2008, there were 55 incidents of US ARMY fratricides resulting in 30 US Army personnel killed. That's US Army assets attacking other US Army assets.

They do the old religion magic way. So No even before colonialism there are still Muslim minorities.
Magic is still being practiced until now actually, in my city in front of our 400 year old church the vendors still sell ingredients for rituals along with their rosaries.
