- Sex work is a way of life for thousands of women in marginalized communities in certain parts of rural India. For many, it is the only way to make money - also due to the Indian caste system and centuries-old prejudices which make it difficult for the families to escape poverty. But winds of change are blowing.
In certain Indian villages, sex work is, in a sense, inherited. Mothers and grandmothers have already worked in the same trade. In the past, they mostly belonged to ethnic groups that worked mainly as performers. The British colonial power criminalized them, and to this day it is especially difficult for the men of these ethnic groups to find regular jobs. Therefore, the female members of the family are often the breadwinners. They are the ones who take out loans, build houses, make important decisions, which is otherwise rare in India. Our reporters Akanksha Saxena and Neerat Kaur looked around the villages - and found signs of hope: The young generation is trying to leave this sad tradition behind and fight for better education and rights.

Those who dream to live are ridiculed and shamed, those who talk openly abt living are threatened to shut up, those who actually live are isolated by society or lynched and defamed, many ppl give up in first stage after getting shamed for dreaming to live a dignitious life, and start existing with all burdens of inhuman traditions made by man, due to fear of abandonment.

This moved me. Seeing those young girls in class learning to read and write smiling and looking happy brought tears to my eyes.
Caste system is like a curse on our Indian society.It's better to get rid of this evil as soon as possible .Our govt is not doing enough for these people & as a society we have failed these
fellow citizens.
Rather than the government, its the people and society itself that should change itself for the better because after all they are the ones upholding it and keeping these discriminative traditions when it has been abolished for so many years already.

Caste was banned under Dr Ambedkar's excellent secular constitution in 1950, but as usual with the Indians they just ignore the laws that they don't like, and corruption plays its part too! It is what it is.

Even only fans, as horrible as it is, is still a “choice” for most people. These women in India don’t have a choice and for many it’s the ONLY one. That’s the difference. As she says, no one in her family had jobs and her sister “had” to get married. Why does her sister HAVE TO get married? Because of tradition and culture in this place. It's disappointing how Indian people and the government have failed to recognise the struggles and create systems for seamless integration of historically nomadic tribes of India since independence and even in modern India. They have always been an important part of Indian culture and society, but it's sad to see a day where they have to struggle to feed their families and access education due to their caste (nomadic tribes). Amazing documentary by DW! 🙌🏼
We can’t really blame government. Its these people who have failed. There are many who struggled and uplift their living from zero. These people are lazy and leech who choose to live like this and play victim and sympathy card.
Nomadic has nothing to do with caste system, firstly tribes weren’t part of caste system. They were openly welcomed if they visited any town or village. So I don’t know how we were not integrated before. Yes british pushed them in jungles even further. Read about that, when their land was commercialised and sold to outsiders.

I feel so bad for the girls born into this work. It's ridiculous that there is so much poverty tha you have to make the choice to sell your body or even be in a call center scamming for the money. I'm so glad that there are people working so hard to provide education.

I'm a Sanantani, the caste system needs to end in India now! In original vedic teachings one can move from ones caste into another profession! This caste system was imposed by foreigners, discriminating towards fellow Santanis due to their caste is not Sanantan Dharma! Great reporting! A friend of mine in Florida is a florist and works occasionally doing weddings for Indian people. You'll be surprised to hear that those wealthy Indians living in the US spend over $100,000 just in flowers. I've heard that some bills go over $250,000. I wonder if those wealthy Indians living here do some volunteer work in India to help the lower casts. That's another topic for DW to explore. Cheers.

But they (DW) won't talk about the issue in Europe because too many of the abusers and racists are immigrant Muslims while the victims are native European girls. Why are they (DW) ignoring the child sexual exploitation cases in the UK, the Netherlands, Germany, Austria, Norway, and Sweden, etc... hmmmm. The data clearly shows that immigrants are vastly overrepresented. This is why they won't investigate the problem. 89% of groomers in the Netherlands have an immigrant background, and 60% are Muslims, while most victims in the Netherlands are Dutch girls, not immigrant girls. The vast majority of victims in the UK are British girls, not immigrant girls.
That's what the Japanese had during WW2, with trafficked women, something they still don't acknowledge today to its Asian victims. "Comfort woman" aka sex slaves in the front lines.

Its actually not required by law. There are several single women who have adopted children in India, including former Miss Universe Susmita Sen and Bollywood Actress Raveena Tandon. So it's not something necessary. But only something that school made up to perpetuate prejudice, they wouldn't have any need for 'father's' name if the mother is filthy rich
That is actually Arab countries our constitution is fair
no need to mention the name of the father, also no need to mention caste, but people mention caste in school certificate because this is a document for future and there are reservation for higher studies and in getting jobs, and low caste will be eligible even though their rank and marks are low.
This happens only in a few cases.

I just came from my second trip to India. Been to New Delhi Jaipur Agra and Mumbai. Experienced the grandiosity of India too. Visited slums ! I found love for India ! I hope for those who are suffering under this tradition be free someday. We are all equal in the eyes of God.
