Protests Turned Violent & Workers On Strike: Could Bangladesh Be The Next Sri Lanka? | Insight

  • For over two months, the main opposition party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has been staging protest in Dhaka, calling for the government’s resignation. They accuse the ruling Awami League of repressive tactics ahead of the next election. Meanwhile, labour disputes have led to tens of thousands of garment workers taking to the streets, as they strike for wage increases. Rising cost of living and a depreciating currency have made life hard for ordinary Bangladeshi.
In the background, the US, China, and India are tussling for influence over the nation of 170 million. Bangladesh has become a key piece in the battle between these superpowers. Yet, there are concerns that large infrastructure loans are leading the country into a debt trap. Amidst political protests, workers strikes and economic troubles, Bangladesh heads for its 12th general elections. Is it in danger of going the way of Sri Lanka and Pakistan?

The current ruling party can't differentiate between right and wrong, they are putting our beloved motherland in danger. The situation would hamper the normal people mainly. The upcoming election won't bring any change because anyhow the ruling party will come into power again by hook or by crook. 25-12-2023 Bangladesh plans to announce its application to join RCEP in 2024
Four years after India withdrew from the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), its neighbor Bangladesh is considering joining the agreement. However, many Indian media claimed on the 25th that if Bangladesh continues to plan to join RCEP, India will re-evaluate the free trade agreement negotiations with the country.
India's "Economic Times" reported that Bangladesh is already negotiating with RCEP members and plans to formally announce its plan to join RCEP after the country's general election in early January 2024.
India participated in the early stages of RCEP negotiations, but announced its withdrawal in November 2019. India has shown opposition to neighboring countries joining RCEP.

I am unfortunately sceptical about future for my home country. Sheikh Hasina and her political party is walking same path as Founding father Sheikh Mujib did. But it is no better, if people think the political culture will be more transparent and true democratic if government accepts opposition party's demand. The BNP is the other side of the coin. Needeless to say when BNP was in power, they did same thing as rolling party doing now. In a sense, Awami League is the lesser evil at least Sheikh Hasina herself is not running party for her own economic profit whereas, Taeq Zia, the opposition leader, has record of committing huge economic corruption. If you compare between 2 parties, both party leaders are more or less corrupted, prone to nepotism. New prominent leaders find it difficult to immerge, in fact almost all frontier leaders of both parties are being replaced by their father ( former MPs). The other parties, unfortunately either followed by leftists or religious extremisms which are no good in the long run. Pakistan is such an example. To me, giving the Election Commission (EC) Supreme power could create democratic environment, trust among parties which seems far cry now. Otherwise, no matter which party comes in power, will use the EC for their own purpose 😢

I think they'll be fine, another reason why I believe that (which I havn't seen mentioned in the comments) is because their inequality isn't too bad, about the same as the average of the EU countries.

As Indian is am wearing my clothes made in Bangladesh .
Root cause of all protests or unrest is lack of economic progress and inflation caused by Russia Ukraine war .
If sheikh Hasina corrects this situation opposition will crumble on its own.

Nothing like that ever happened. Most Hindus converted to Islam due to their lower social status in Hinduism. They faced discrimination and torture from upper caste Hindus. Only conversion to Abrahamic faith changed that.
