  • This week on EV Rider we’ve got a long-term road test of the 2021 Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon 4xe, which is Jeep’s first plug-in hybrid here in the U.S. The Jeep we're profiling has more than 21,000 miles on it.

The 10k difference in price is valid enough, but don't forget the $7500 federal tax break. If you can use it all, then you're only talking $2,500 difference. 2500 is pretty cheap for another 100HP and the ability to drive 20 miles without gas.

The cost vs the 3.6 or 2.0T need to factor in the 470 torque, there is a lot of added value beyond just the EV range

Agreed. There are a variety of reasons the Wrangler PHEV is selling so well and in some ways is superior to ICE Wranglers but that doesn't invalidate the point that Jake was making that from a financial standpoint alone, the economic return of the PHEV vs. ICE doesn't pencil out in terms of fuel cost savings when buying a new one new.

I also got the 7500 tax credit making this about the same price as the regular Wrangler. And you are absolutely correct about the 470# torque vs. 260#; there is no comparison.

I enjoy the instant heat during the winter with the heat pump. Also with the electric motors being on the front of the engine and in the transmission you are able to install a lift and other accessories like you would with any other Wrangler JL.

0.7 kwh/mi is pretty low. I am getting about 2.4 on my Lightning and 4.2 on my Leaf.
The problem with hybrids is complexity. Dealers love your repair bills. That's why they have been fighting EVs since the EV1 (see "Who Killed The Electric Car?"). Hopefully this one won't have as many problems as most Stellantis vehicles.

Our family has owned 2 PHEVs and 1 hybrid over the years from GM, Ford & Toyota. All were very reliable cars, although the Prius's battery went bad at 140k miles and the ELR & C-Max Energi were both showing signs of battery degradation (reduced EV range) by the time we sold them. So at least for us, it was the batteries as opposed to ICE componants that were the weak spot in those vehicles. We never replaced or had trouble with things like belts, valves, sparkplugs, etc.

Who cares! Bought my 2024 Rubicon with the sky one touch roof and have no regrets - in fact I’d buy a second one. It’s my first Jeep and I could have bought anything. It’s not suppose to be an EV reliant vehicle.

21 miles per charge? Seems a little... low? lol

The grid will do just fine in developed, progressive parts of the world. In fact, you'll see EVs helping the grid thanks to some current and more future models being able to serve as back-up power supplies that will be able to reduce stress on the grid during peak periods. The Ford F-150 Lightning is one current example. It can power a house for days, including running air conditioning and refrigerator. As for your other comment, I can't speak for other parts of the world, but slavery has been outlawed in the U.S. since 1865. Slavery is immoral and should be condemmed by all. If you have evidence of lithium being mined with slave labor I would urge you to share it with the proper authorities.

@@EVRider maybe someone dirty deleted a comment? Cause I'm not anti EV, at all. I was just goofing on the mileage.

@@monkeysuncle2816 I haven't deleted any comments so I'm assuming the writer deleted the original comment that I responded to in which the writer implied battery mining was done by slave labor and grids couldn't handle EVs. I do my best to debunk misinformation while remaining polite when time allows.
