Hey I used that UPOL blend #9 on the sail panel of my 1970 Charger RT as I did some body repair and then blend job on the upper sail panel of the car. I used some of this video as inspiration and partial guide when completing my repair. I had never done a blend job before but It worked out really nice! Thanks!
When I burn the clear, I put reducer in the clear. So the clear on the edges melts in and I like to sand it with 1500 grit sand paper. Buff the panel, for a better result. I mask the bumper does not matter how small the spot job is.
Great video Chris with some really helpful advice for us DIY painters, this type of repair won't last as long as a bumper off and a full repaint but they are a good alternative and as you said it will last a good while👏👍John UK
That will be great Chris, I'll be looking forward to seeing them, I'm still going through all your back catalogue of videos, wow mate there is so much good info there👌👍
I’ve used the Spray Max Glamour 2K clear in a pinch a few times. You can swipe nozzles off of lots of other spray cans and see what works for a different spray pattern. I’ve found some narrow “bird shot”, and I’ve found the wide “shotgun spray” and that is key. But that Spray Max has serious longevity. I did my drivers side quarter panel, and it has withstood the gas spill test, sunshine test, the lot. Passes with flying colors. And it is hard. Not an easy scratch. The only problem is that while it last out glossy as can be and you can watch it melt into the previous stoke or coat, when it dries it’s gonna have some orange peel. Just spray several coats. I keep one of those infrared heaters about two feet away from the panel just as it’s finishing flashing off. Also a key factor. It also helps reduce orange peel. But it cuts out fine. For what it is, it’s incredible. You just can’t really prevent the orange peel.
Great video Chris!. Thanks. Question regarding the settings. What is general rule of adjusting these small touchup guns? What pressure should we keep for base and clear ? 20-30 or 10-15 ? How much fluid ? 1-2 turns out ? What typical distance -? Thanks 😊
Seriously I realy couldn't tell you. I go by the sound and I apologize I should have put it in the video. I will say for this touch up as low as you can get the psi and still get good paint atomization. I'll revisit this in another video. Appreciate your question.
@@GarageNoise thank you!). Since i am kinda new and just learning your video helping understand more how to fix issues i am running into during a painting. Lol i put on my touch up gun 30, then 25, then 20. After 5th time start using around 15. (Touchup gun from HF, silver one. Looks like a normal hvlp just smaller ) , next time will try 10 🤷🏻♂️ . Also, i noticed all my touchup guns (2from HF) and One R100 dont open wide fan. (Small but wide). They are more like from rattle can
I used DA one day and burned thru clear coat (just a thin layer). Now it looks like I have a slightly of color dot on my paint that you can only see during a sunshine. What can you suggest? I’m also from Oklahoma
Sorry may be a silly question, is hobby airbrush possible to be used on this spot repair? What make me think using airbrush is hobby airbrush will spray more fine and suitable this area?
I painted a guitar with 2k acrylic, and then 2k clear. I sanded through the clear on the very edge, 90 degree edge, just into the color base. I did this before polishing with a 1200 grit paper. I'm curious how I can apply your method to avoid having to sand and respray the entire guitar. Is there a reason I shouldn't tape off anything beyond 1in of the small edge sand through? I was thinking I can spray more clear and then the UPOL blender and follow the rest of your guidance from this vid. Is it critical to spray more color or can I get away with just clear and blender?
If it was me, I would sand it all down with 600. Blow a little color on it and then re clear the entire guitar, but if you wanted to just spot in that area you wanna wet sand with 1500 around the area where you'll apply the clear coat, blow in a little color on that burn through and then Blend and the clear like I did in the video. Then you gotta wash it in with a little reducer then you need to wet sand lightly and buff it out, but being that a guitar is not very big. I would just reclear the whole thing, it's gonna make it a lot easier.
That bumper needed a full respray but guess the owner only wanted to pay so much.i can understand that it was the daily drive car seen many miles on the road.Im sure if it was a new car hole bumper would have been done still a good job for what u needed to do in the end will only last so long.Great clip.
Yeah, it needed a respray. He asked me to brush touch it. He's a valued customer so I figured I'd do a video on a smart blend since I never have to opertunity to do them.
@@GarageNoise love your work it helps us DIY so much I'm in Australia Name is Phil help so much cheers these videos are great and the work u put into it thank you so much.
From my experience the overall is a bit slower drying which makes sense since it's for an overall paint job. I wouldn't use them together unless you speak with a SW paint rep they my have more detailed information.
@@GarageNoise I’m trying to reduce my inventory of products so I’ll stick with 710 after I finish using up 720. Thanks for the reply. I really enjoy your posts. Hope you had a good vacation!
@@GarageNoise would you be able to do a video of how to set up this spray gun? I used it for clear coat (Speedokote 2k clear), but it came out very dry or orange peeled.
Chris can you please help me I have a ford focus mk3 titanium x iam putting a new bumper on the front comes already primed and I have primed the bonnet or hood as you say can I put one coat off base coat paint on and then another coat and a blend over the top and another coat of base coat paint and clear coat paint and the same Chris with the bumper so its matches the car somebody said just base coat it and then clear coat it
Good video Chris. I might be answering my own question here. I have an 29 year old Toy Truck and the paint/clear has deteriorated on the roof and hood. I want to paint both panels for now to clean up the truck. On the roof the paint is rough in a 12" patch but ok going down the sides. It seems I can use this blend technique with 2000 grit then polish with the existing paint that is in decent shape. Is this correct? Thanks
I really think on a roof you'd be better off paint and blending the spot but clearing the roof completely. It wouldn't make sense to blend like this. I not really that much more work or materials and then it would last and look better than a blend.
In preparing to blend clearcoat, 2000 grit is too fine and 800 grit too rough, a 1000 or1200 grit scotch grey pad or some 3M buff paste would make the blend invisible if done correctly.
In any regard this is a dumb comment. He clearly stated he this was free fix to get rid of an eyesore, which he obviously did, without respraying the whole bumper cover.
I've been looking for a good diy spot fix. I have a few small circular spots on the roof and hood, I don't feel like repainting the whole top for a few small spots.
Glad I ran into this channel.. started my body tech journey in 2021 and I just got my first dealership job. Very helpful tips I’ll be using

Needs clear coat. Scuff panel with grey scotchbrite, clear coat whole panel
Great demonstration but you didn't say how long it was after the last claer coat blend before you Buffered up the rest of the panel?
If you can let it sit overnight or at least 4-6 hours
More great info! Thanks
You bet!
How much time do you wait to spray on the blende and also time for polishing ? Steve
With plastic bumpers you should be using an adhesion promoter so the paint doesn't peel.
Yes, over bare plastic. You should use adhesion promoter

What you gonna do if the edges wrinkle up on ya 🤔 nice Chris👍
Paint the whole bumper🤣

So basically to make it look proper, full coat of clear ? Where does blend spray really come to proper uses ?
Short answer is never, it's not really the proper way to do it. The only time I might do it is down low on a rocker panel.
Do I need to use the blend if I’m polishing ?
I have a question when I spray the blend on how long do iI have to wait to buff it?
I'll typically buff the next day

What makes Finish 1 710 and 720. 710 being spot panel and 720 overall different? Can you use them interchangeably?

Sand smooth with 600, base coat until covered, then 2 coats of clear 10-15 minutes between coats.

no primer or adhesion promoter?
For this one no, but it would definitely be beneficial

Welcome 😊
Wow nice thanks cris

Are you trying to limit the new clear to just the area that you hit with 2000 grit? I assume you don’t want to hit any area you did not sand right?
Absolutely, yes
How many pounds of pressure on the gun?
I can't recall, but you don't need much , I think about 10-15psi
That was nice
👍
Can you buff the same day
If you can let it sit ovenight , but I did buff this the same day usually after about 4 hour

As long as the clear holds up which is 7-10 years. The blend may show before that
