      I could see that the top of the door was a bit bluer, but that also could of been that the primer may have what we call bleed thru, giving it a lighter or bluer appearance. Basically you may not have got it covered with the color enough. It could also be that the color was not agitated good enough to. (Shake it for 5 mins)

    Finally showing the actual process instead of skipping/editing it. Because when we try at home, and we get what doesn't look to be the shiny clear mirror finish, we get discouraged. Good to see what it looks like "mid-way" to see what we have to do to get the end. Honestly, turned out A LOT better than I thought it would. This should be OK for most people who don't care for show-quality, just want the unsightly clear coat peel gone...

    Great video. A modification I would make is getting the paint code and going to a paint store where they can factory match and put in an aerosol can. The results would be about as perfect as one could expect. The one variable is this existing paint is OLD and pearls are very hard to match. Also def be aware that 2K has isotopes that will KILL you. Wear a appropriately rated respirator whenever you spray 2k paints/clears. Stuff is no joke!

    Don’t do a mist coat just to finish the can on the last coat, that’s why you got orange peel. That’s the best 2k rattle can out there. If you spray it rite, you can get no orange peel. Glad to see someone actually doing the correct steps (Sand, prime, base, & clear coat).

    • @dkindig
      @dkindig 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Ditto on actually doing the correct steps, glad to see that. I've got to repair an area that was poorly done by someone else, clear flaked right off. I suspect that they attempted to spray the clear over the original base coat and I found out that clear needs to chemically bond to the base shortly after the base is sprayed for best results. Now I know that I have to go all the way back to primer for best adhesion...

Also he was almost completely missing the end of the rear door on both the base coat and clear coat, make sure you give the edges a little extra attention or you will be buffing through! Forty-four years ago my younger brother repainted my '70 Mercury Capri using a sprayer that attached to the exhaust port of a vacuum cleaner. He worked on it in his spare time and it took five weeks. Most of the time was spent preparing the vehicle to be painted. My brother more or less made me promise to not get antsy and want to look at it before he was finished. It turned out great. We still talk about it. My brother did a great job with the body preparation. This was all done in a time when cell phone cameras didn't exist. What gives me pause now is thinking about how _no one_ even thought to take a single photograph before or after so all I have are the memories of what the vehicle looked like before the job and afterwards.

    Nice work, and I like your honest assessment of the repair at the end. You can tell there is a difference in the old and new paint, but it looks very good overall. Cartridges also must be rated for organic vapors, And if they aren't brand new they should have been stored in an airtight bag and only used for 6 to 8 hours total. If either of those conditions haven't been met then be safe and buy new cartridges.

After a few steps of trial and error and before I watched this, I did something similar. The results were equally impressive. The two steps I added were to use a polishing compound after the cutting compound and to wax as a final step. The polishing compound will give it an even better mirror like finish. And of course the wax will help protect the new paint job! Thank you for posting this Hektor!

    Best to remove the door handle and belt moldings vs. tape them off. Why? The clear/color coat will lift where the frog tape met with the molding as there is no surface prep to hold it. Otherwise, this is a great alternative to professional body shop methods which simply revert to complete paint of doors. One alternative to the rattle can color coat. Get a pint of color matched paint from a local automotive paint shop. Heavy on the clear so it doesn't do this again. Looks better than it did and thats the important part.

    This video is really useful for people looking to repair and maintain their daily old beater, a cheap second hand car or a track machine that will get scuffed all the time. At the end of the day, in many cases you only need something that is functional, protects the metal and looks quite good. If you paid little for a vehicle or it is very old you won't probably go to a body shop and spend a fortune there. Thanks! Oh, btw, please use a respirator! That clear coat is very toxic!

    Great work with spray cans. Besides a respirator, I'd say use sanding blocks or pads. Very surprised that your heavy/close spray with the 2k worked as well as it did. Looks like the magic was in your prep and post sanding. Great video!

      Likewise! I was worries about the orange peel and waited until thr and and thought "oh no, this didn't work out". @@Omarrr77There will always be orange peel with rattle cans as there is not enough pressure in the cans. The good thing is that with a little elbow grease, cut and buff, the paint will look great. I did this to my 2015 Infiniti Q50 hood, bumper and fenders. No one can believe that i used rattle cans. Even my brother who helped me with the prep work. Also had a few friends who are painters were extremely impressed. Only paid 300 for the front end instead of 2300 like i was quoted. I just bought the B-92P paint for my Honda as well. Duplicolor. I tested it on something else and held it up to the car and it was wayyy off. Really blue. What I did was I applied a basic black base for 3 coats (it was over light Grey primer) then did a final dust coat with the b92p. It was a very close match

    Awesome job on that for a DIY! I do mobile bodyshop work for a living and wanted to add two things:
    1) you can get custom matched paint cans made for you at local paint shops. I get them for about $20 each when I need a color that I can’t easily make. They spray better and match better then Duplicolor. Larger cans too.
    2). You can cut down on orange peel a huge amount amount by spraying the 2nd-last layer of clear much wetter, it’ll make the wet sand and polish process 10x easier. Most jobs don’t even need a polish when applied in that way.
    Great work and way to get out there and do stuff! Too much talk from most people.

I dry sanded up to the 1000 and wet sanded the 1500 grit. • @bm5906

    You need to learn to "walk the car." Never start, stop, or reverse direction of a spray in the middle of a panel. You should have started each pass behind the back of the rear door and gone all the way past the front end of the front door and then stopped your spray. Shake the can and start spraying on the masked off section at the front and work your way to the masked off section past the rear door, maintaining the same steady walking pace for each pass. Your color coats were too heavy and uneven. Did you let the color coat dry for at least a month before applying the 2k clear? If not, you will probably get bubbling in a few months, and certainly within a year. Right now you have wet paint encased between the metal doors and the cured 2k clear, and it does not have a chance to properly dry. For your hand sanding you should have wrapped the sandpaper around a sponge to avoid uneven pressure points from your hands. And soak wet/dry sandpaper in water for at least 5 minutes before doing wet sanding. And ALWAYS WEAR GLOVES when prepping and painting to both protect the paint area from skin oils, and your skin from paint. Ideally, you should also have a long sleeve shirt on as well, and goggles. A $15 painting gas mask from Harbor Freight will give you pretty decent protection from the paint fumes, which are toxic gases. The damage to your lungs and skin is cumulative. Worse, 2k clear can permanently destroy parts of your brain. That stuff is about as dangerous as you can buy legally. Always protect yourself.
