One of my most asked questions is "how do you blend the old clearcoat into the new". Well, I think the best way is to make a video of which i've been wanting to do for a while. This short video explains the process in detail with step by step guidance every step of the way.
Making a good transition from an original finish to blend into the new one has many benefits. The car owner can achieve a much smaller repair and if it's for a customer, it can prove a far more cost effective approach. Rather than painting a whole panel or panels! a spot repair can be an effective repair.
This process is one I use nearly every day in some form. Its made me a lot of money and save my customers thousands!
This is a method which can cause much discussion and is less utilised outside of the UK! Hopefully I have shown my method which works very well for that amazing fade out finish!

a good demonstration on smart repairs, im not sure what setup you have in that lph80, but if get a 1.2 setup for it. you can lacquer with it also i tend to use "quartz speedster" to thin it down abit and add another coat of clear. ive never seen the half polishing before, ill give that a try! also i will panel wipe with thinners to soften the old clear up abit helps with the blend area

Have you tried "3M Scotch Blue Exterior" tape? That stuff snaps off with a perfect straight edge when you give it a quick yank. It also sticks perfectly to painted panels. I found it helps me mask bits up neater. Love your vids, thanks for showing the tips and techniques.

I bought a couple of slightly damaged Kia diamond cut wheels to do training on while I am down here and watched your diamond cut videos several times each to prepare me for doing this training and feeling very confident with the course I am away to do thanks to your videos

Bro please a quick question in your other videos you do wet sand before polishing but here you are directly polishing without sanding the clear coat any reason for that?your response would be appreciated
Best video on blending on you tube mate. By FAR,. Can you tell me do you use trixac disks 2000 = 3000 on your blend areas before you polish or do you just use the polish. Cheers buddy....

As always great work. How long does your clear coat need to dry in winter? What would such a repair cost. You do this for people at home
15 mins per area at 60 degrees. Prices vary but less than a bodyshop and yes I am a mobile service
Great video. Can i just ask why are both sides polished, why polishing is needed after grey scotch. Sorry but i just can't wrap my head arround about blending and these paper tunnels. Maybe someone could explain to me what happens if greyscotched area isn't polished and if tunnels arent used!? 😔

Hi mate - looks great. What’s the method & grit paper etc to ‘sand and de-nib’? Are you doing that to the new clearcoat you applied, or the fade out area? Thanks mate
never sand the fadeout area! its 1500 grit once the clear is fully baked and cooled back down then a good polish.

To polish up a blend area you need a good heavy cut polish/compound. Finishing polishes will be useless

I always use a fast activator in colder temps
What polish where you using I have a ford focus mk3 and iam putting the original bumper on from ford it comes primed and iam doing the bonnet as well will I have to get some fade out blend

What grit did you use before applying clear? Is it finer for the fade out area? And what grit can you use to get imperfections out before buffing? Cheers
Grey scotch then polish in slightly where you want the face. I use 1500 and 2000 to de nib at the end

Lacquer do u mean? Diamond clear from express paints
What would be the procedure if your new clear coat (from aerosol can) is not perfect and you need to wet sand it down with like 3k sandpaper to remove orange peel or imperfections. How you would you go about blending it in?
Sand with 2000 grit then 3000 grit. Just go steady round fade out Arras
How come it comes out so peely out of the gun? is there a way to improve that mobile so there is less polishing after?
This was shot in 0 degree temps. A "gun finish" is more achievable once the temps get to around 8 and above imo. Uve got to respect your surroundings and the environment your working in. I tend to put the clear on a little dry to prevent runs etc. A quick flat usually sorts it.

I use 3m alot but have been using a range from Italy called paicar
No matter what I do on my Black civic the edge peels back. I've redone it 4 times. What am I doing wrong? I usually color cut the next day per the manufacturers Tech data sheet. I am in 90 temps and using a slow reducer.
It sounds like possibly just buffing/polishing too aggressively for that fresh soft edge, and maybe a pad that's too aggressive also... Also try buffing the blend with the pad spinning away from the blend edge and not spinning toward the edge so that it's not cutting into that fresh edge too harshly. I know exactly what you mean, I've had issues with black also and found this video because I'm about to do about 10 blends on a black GMC pickup truck!!

How durable are the blended areas? Whats the benefit from painting edge yo edge with clear vs a smart repair? Will they fade back over time?
They are durable. Repeated hard polishing would effect them.

What was the reason of making the tunnel on half of the polishing area?
So the spray and overspray doesn't hit a 'hard edge'
Yes I know about the edge, but as far as I know the fresh paint will peel on polished areas ,thanks for replay

Personally I think any pro range spray gun can perform how u want it when u learn to use it over time and get familiar with it. My trainer used devilbiss and iwata lph 80s so I've just stood with them. They are also very robust guns and lasted many years

Either would be a good choice mate. I suppose it depends if you want go go into the job doing smaller more smart blow ins or full panels etc. Lph is brilliant at smaller jobs

alot of guys just use thinners but i use lechler fade out blender
I use R-M UBR200 but it isn't cheap its only sold in quarts but it's well worth it

You would get such a nicer blend if you done it in 2 stages.
First stage thin your clear down 2:1 with fade out and put that towards the end of the repair area, then neat fade out so it's a much more controlled blend rather than clear to fade out. Plus a polish over once and its sorted

With a red paint wouldn't the new red still look darker after blending?
No it shouldn't do. The old paint should polish up to a shine

I used 777 aerosol fade out on 2k lacquer that was air dried for 1hr in 80°f heat and it reacted badly
Never used an aerosol one mate. Could be numerous issues without seeing it

are you going to now explain to every one how you then went back as it all pulled back due to your barely one coat of laquer you applied and the heavy flatting you done to get rid of the orange peel with your extra speed cureing lacquer
dint get me wrong good on you for makeing a channel and showing what you do but you should be at the top of your game this is below par man
and let alone you didn't even knock back after the body line so the haze is unreal if you apply a 3 quater coat the flash off then hit it with a wet coat you can get a off the gun finish and you won't have to worry about any draw back bud this will help you in the long run
Aup Terry. Thanks for your comments. I actually worked on this car again the other day (coming up to 12 months later) and everything looked fine. Happy customer and repeat business. No rip back, flaking paint, lacquer failure, gloss drop or any other issue for that matter. If there was.. id surely be out of business and or/work would dry up. Ill stick to my methods thanks mate.
Actually, funnily enough.. ive worked on this car 3 times over the last 3 years. Ive also worked on the same guys sons Audi A3 (see the blue audi arch repair video), then his work van, then his sons Audi again. He's my 2nd most regular customer over a 3 year period. So I get to inspect my work over time and none of what you said happened. Thanks for your feedback anyway tho pal 👍🏼
