I'm sorry, but the fact that your husband sat on his phone for like 5 mins straight, and then put on one sock and continued looking at phone completely floored me.
I love it when your incredible professional work has tiny, beautiful spots of your personal life in it, it's heartwarming. And also helps me embrace that my boyfriend is not alone in putting on one sock at a time xD

Right! I was watching this as I applied my routine tanning mouse lol. Since using retinol though I haven't been applying really at all to my face, 1 because the retinol has faded my freckles and therefore my face looks LESS white (because it doesn't have the dark freckles to compare the colour to and 2 because I guess my skin cell turnover is so quick with the retinol that the fake tan just doesn't apply nice and evenly and makes my skin look uneven and patchy. But I will continue the tan all over body it makes me feel good too and I guess I'll start using the creams prior that she suggested lol😊

Meanwhile in the Philippines, we are using lots of whitening skin care products or glutathione drips to achieve whiter complexion because we are naturally brown/tanned. People with whiter complexion want our skin tone. Meanwhile, people with brown complexion want yours.
Honestly, I'm brown and i want whiter complexion. It's hard to love my natural skin tone specially with the beauty standard (milky white skin is pretty and brown chocolate skin is not) set by the people that i mostly encounter.
Sad truth is that some of us just want something we don't have and dislike something we have that other people dream about.
Tanning doesn't really apply to me but still watched because I'm a little nerd that craves extra knowledge. Thanks Dr. Idriss!

We all want what we don't have. I am spanish, most of us get a tan here and getting brown in summer is a must. We linge for ours under the sun. I am now learning to avoid it and use sunscreen daily. It is hard because I looooved my dark olive summer complexion but I have to stop it. In this area we all are covered in spots. People think it happens because you get old but it is actually because we become old after ages of unprotected sun exposure. I try to avoid dark spots, melasma and wrinkles.

    • @Sweet1ce
      @Sweet1ce 2 ปีที่แล้ว +77

Chiming in months late but I had the exact same question so I thought it would be worth adding my two cents. After watching both videos it seems like both Dr. Dray and Dr. Idriss actually agree on a lot/talk about similar things in their videos. They both recognize the potential risks when it comes to the inhalation of DHA, the fact that it does increase free radical production on the skin, etc. The main difference is that while Dr. Idriss draws the conclusion that free radicals on the skin automatically equate to increased skin aging, Dr. Dray looks at the evidence with more nuance and suggests that more research needs to be done on humans in vivo to prove that these findings do in fact translate (as she mentions, rats and clusters of cells are not the same as a human test subject). While Dr. Dray is definitely a stronger proponent of using self-tanner, in the end it seems that they both agree that a) self-tanner is a better alternative to baking in the sun/tanning booths, and b) that it can provide benefits to the user when used in moderation (like many things in life). If you're a casual self-tan user, I doubt that it will age you as much as drinking, smoking, lack of sleep, or not wearing sunscreen would, so I would focus on tackling those factors before worrying about the impacts of self-tanner. Hope that helps anyone who was also confused.

Great video! Former tanning consultant here with some sunless tips. Applying just about anything before sunless is increasing the likelihood of streaking. Tanning salons sell primers you can use before the booths, but you can also try spraying plain witch hazel on your skin first to create an even pH across your skin. You shouldn't use any leave on products after bathing beforehand. Salons also sell exfoliating scrubs to use the day before spraying and tan extenders (moisturizers) to use afterwards. We used barrier cream (oil moisturizer) before spraying on knees, elbows, ankles, etc palms of hands, in between fingers and caked on nails. We applied it like lotion to reduce absorption (elbows) or applied it thick to completely block absorption (nails, palms). If you're not using a spray, I'd consider not using a barrier cream before since it would spread to surrounding areas when you applied the self tanner. Instead I might try gently wiping knees and ankles with a baby wipe after 1-2 hrs so the areas don't overdevelop more than elsewhere. Our head trainer would apply a tan extender everywhere a couple hours after tanning thinking that made things more even but it probably just kept all of her from looking overdeveloped. 🙂

I had an epiphany a couple weeks ago. I’ve been using self tanners off and on, and realized that I was spending money on something to change the colour of my skin tone, but really for what reason? I’ve never had an insecurity of my skin tone when I was born, but it’s what society has painted certain parts of the world to overtime. “You’re so pale, or you’re so white!” As if that was a bad thing lol.
No matter where we are in the world or whatever your skin tone is, there is always a beauty standard we’re not following. Using self tanners is better than baking in the sun or worse going to a tanning bed, but we only get our skin this one time. Maybe we should just start respecting it more by protecting and refining it rather than changing it :)
Have a great day whoever is reading❤️

Most people in my family/culture have bronze skin but I just don’t spend enough time in the sun to get there. I started using self tanners a few years ago mostly in the summer but they are so much work (at least on the body). This year I started using bronzing makeup tints for my face and looking for the body. I didn’t know any of this info but I’m glad I now know and grateful you provide such informative content! Glad that I’ve been pretty moderated with self tan anyway and not using it for that many years. I’ll stick to the summer time on my legs. Will try your recommendations next time!

Reading through the comments and wondering about the “other side of the story”.
I am South Asian with not so deep brown skin, which was a privilege while growing up that I never wanted/cared for. Back home I have seen how people worship light, pale skin. Teenage/young girls with deeper brown skin would go through a lot of inferiority complex induced by surroundings. While growing up every girl I knew would use 3-4 shade lighter foundation just to look “whiter”. Still now society thinks “lighter = beautiful”. Then I moved abroad and saw the frenzy about tanning. Embracing own-self is indeed hard.
Great informative video as always. Happy safe tanning everyone!

My experience as a tanner skin toned person was pretty different than usual. I'd say I'm a special case. I'm pretty tanned overall, but I fit most other beauty standards like having large brown eyes with big eyelashes, a straight nose, a small oval shaped face, long hair down to my waist and an athletic slim bodytype. I'm still a student, yet I've heard how much prettier I'd be if I were paler, and "tips" on how to lighten my skin. Mostly from older people tho, thankfully I've never been made fun of by my peers or people my age for my skin tone. It's annoying but nothing compared to my friends who got harassed and bullied purely for being tanner than the rest. It's ironic how our tanned skin is so appreciated in the west, when most South Asians want to get rid of it.

My sister has a very similar complexion to me but goes golden in the sun very easily where I don't and I was so envious when I was young.
One thing I struggle with as a pale person who also struggles a great deal with their weight and body image is that I feel like I look so much larger than average because of how light my complexion is? Like if I just had a slightly deeper skin tone my huge thighs wouldn't be so evident? I have also always struggled with how visible my veins are through my skin. I can definitely appreciate the beauty of other pale/fair people but I can't seem to like it on myself. Definitely don't have the energy/time for fake tan though.

I am also very pale and I have completely given up on tanning in any shape or form. When I worked as a lifeguard (and properly used sunscreen), I tanned really unevenly; my shoulders and arms were beautifully tanned and my legs that would reflect light (like the vampires in Twilight). I have learned to embrace my pale skin, and an even skin tone is game changer.
Suggestion for a future video: It appears you have covered all the major ingredients for us, non medical professionals (HA, glycerin, exfoliating acids, niacinamide...). But there is a combination of ingredients that I encountered a lot lately: Peptides + collagen (topically).
Thank you once again for your very helpful videos! :)

My arms, shoulders and back will tan but my legs are SO stubborn and remain ghostly no matter what I do, it seems. Then it just looks weird to have your upper body and lower body be two entirely different shades so I just said screw it. 🤷🏼‍♀️

I am also the palest in my family, and they’re pale too (Shereene is a tan goddess in comparison to me!). But they can burn and be fine the next day. Me, I would get sun poisoning. Was called Casper in junior high. Almost no foundation is light enough for me. I am not “Ivory Bisque” or “Porcelain Beige”, I am White AF. Self tanning lotion doesn’t work; I would be fooling no one. I spent the first 20 years of my life wanting to be tan, but hating the sun since that damned orb just wants to fry me. 🌞 🔥 😫
I’m now 49. I learned to embrace the pale. And now people envy me because I have barely aged. People are shocked when I tell them I’m 49. I’m usually mistaken for being in my early 30s. I have no wrinkles, no crow’s feet, no dark spots. I WIN!

the fact that so many people in the comments were/are insecure of their pale skin when i, as a tan/dark skinned asian was always insecure about my skin and was teased and bullied when i was young for having dark skin goes to show how beauty standards ain’t shit. we all think other people are beautiful and we aren’t but truth is, we all have something other people want and vice versa. we are all unique and beautiful in our own ways and need to realise that there’s no need to change things that we were born with like our skin colour but put in that effort into taking care of our skin, hair and body. not because we have something to fix but rather care for and respect parts of ourselves. just my two cents as someone who’s interested in learning things but has never and will never use self tanner lol.

I am paler than you by nature, but that's normal in my family. [The Ordinary's 1.1P foundation is my perfect match ... my daughter is lighter than I am.] After one summer when I was a teen deliberately trying to tan, going back to school and being called a ghost, I gave up completely. [Unlike the textbook Fitzpatrick 1, I don't burn easily. I also don't tan.] I guess that's why I have good skin in my 60s.
But my lower legs don't pick up any color at all. My thighs, knees and feet color slightly, so the contrast is weird. I also like wearing skirts ... I'll use the light Jergen's tanner about once a week to even things out.
Dr Sherene, I would love to hear how you handle the "ghost legs" problem. Even though I don't use much DHA, I'd rather not use any.

Tanning beds are indeed worse than lying in the sun. UVA rays penetrate deeper into the layers of the skin, and there is definitely a higher risk of cancer associated with acquiring a tan via tanning bed. UVA rays are also linked to higher rates of leukemia and lymphoma. Embrace, accept your own skin tone and take care of it.

I’m olive skin toned and have gotten lighter and lighter each year because of my sunscreen and skincare obsession and am self conscious of this. I’m from a Mexican family and there’s always discussions on whose the palest/darkest in the family and I’m self conscious of not being brown enough. I just applied a self tanning lotion for the first time and then watched this video. If I would’ve seen this video before, I would not have applied the lotion! Honestly I just gotta accept I’m not going to be super tan ever again and that’s okay!

Im a pale Polish/German/Irish gal, I bought self tanner for my wedding because people were pressuring me, "dont you want to look nice and tan for your wedding?" but I have only used self tanner a couple times in high school nearly 18 years ago because people said I looked ugly pale. Well, many years later I learned that most people are rude and stupid. I know very well now that there is NOTHING wrong with being pale. Anyway, I decided against using it for my wedding, being pale is very ME. & I love me. & What I think about myself is the only persons opinion that matters... Literally.

Ok I have some questions: if the Maillard reaction is in and of itself oxidization, wouldn’t application of an antioxidant reduce the efficacy of a self-tanner? Or wouldn’t the self-tanner just laugh at that little bit of ubiquionol and go about it’s merry way caramelizing the skin?
    And
Vitamin C oxidizes to this exact same chemical, right? So I’ve heard people say that when Vitamin c oxidizes on the skin and gives you that unfortunate orangey glow, it’s actually fine and it causes absolutely no damage to the skin. Sounds like you’re saying that’s false?
And of that IS the case, the need for super fresh, super stable vitamin c becomes all the more imperative so I often wonder if it’s just better to get our topical antioxidants from other sources that are more stable.
    Thanks Dr Idriss!

I have SOO many questions that I’d love to hear your take on, but top on my list is this… in my mid-30s I’m noticeably aging (obvi) and feeling like ur advice has given me a good handle on how to care for my skin and get results, BUT WHAT ABOUT MY AGING LIPS? Is there a non-invasive way to help turn back time on them (thinning and fine lines primary concerns)?? I’m Hoping to avoid fillers and temporary bee-sting type plumpers that give me red clown lips 🤡! Any advice?!! And if the answer is really some sort of fillers or injections, can you advise on what and where and how and why?? ♥️♥️♥️
Okay ONE more burning question… Bakuchiol vs/plus retinol… yes? No? Better for rosacea?? Total nonsense??

Try being in Australia where we have the highest rates of skin cancer in the world and (thankfully) excellent efficacious sunscreens AND equally large sections of self tanners in EVERY drugstore (chemists here). When you have a tan people always say how healthy one looks. In my age group especially (late 40’s-early 50’s)-the generation that was the last to be outside without sunscreen, hats, shirts, sunglasses as children. We cover our kids in sun protection but not ourselves???? I have friends who post before tanning and after tanning photos of their legs proudly online. How do we change this culture? Advertising depicts Australians as beachy people with tans…still. I was just talking to someone about self tanning last night. As summer comes on I am putting Bondi Sands tanning lotion on my legs instead of my whole body like previous seasons. I am grateful for the information Dr Idriss. What about gradual tanners? Dove is very popular here.

Family and friends would always tell me „oh you look so pale“ „are you sick“ „you should go out and have fun“. I always felt uncomfortable by these sentences because how so I change my skin color 😖. I was even told „everyone looks better with a dark tan“ I am thankful I never listened to them because now I don’t have any sun damage. But I could easily see others being „forced“ into sun bathing. For me it never worked even tho my mother tried to force me to sun bathe with her because I hate the heat and direct sun. Now I embrace my skin tone and don’t even fake tan. I tried it once sears ago because so many influencers advertised this one self tanner that supposedly isn’t turning you orange. Boo was I orange 🍊😂. I now also don’t see a reason to change my skin color anymore because of some dumb beauty standards. Like how the hell can a skin tone be a beauty standard. That’s dumb af

    • @AbstractMindsThinkAlike
      @AbstractMindsThinkAlike 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Wow, you are right. I was kind of "forced" myself. It was my mom that told me how sick and pale I looked and who basically told me to use my hard earned money at 16 to get an annual tanning salon membership. I baked and burned my skin severely at times just to get tan enough for her. I would tan at the beach all day long, then spend 20 minutes on the highest setting in a tanning bed. We also didn't have a car and had to walk and/or take the bus everywhere throughout our childhood and yup, no sunscreen. I so wish that my mother would have told me to love and preserve my pale skin and that I was beautiful just the way God made me.
I didn't start wearing sunscreen on my face until 35, and 37 is when I started using it daily. I can see my skin aging and there are days I'm so hurt at the lines and sunspots on my chest and hands, but I have to remind myself that I still need to be grateful (like the bible says, be joyful in all circumstances). I have a beautiful family and I can teach my children better--I've already started.
