    I was dealing with bad acne around six months ago. I heard all the rage about salicylic acid and overdid it once, especially with my sensitive skin. I had chemical burns, pus-filled blisters, just destroyed my skin's barrier. Scarred me both emotionally and physically, so I now stay far away from any salicylic acid. Yes, I know it's an irrational fear lol.
    But then a few months later I started getting flaky skin and my products weren't absorbing, so I took a very cautionary step into the realm of acids once again, this time with glycolic acid. It worked well to exfoliate and reduce blackheads without turning my entire face red in 10 seconds. I've worked up to using it once a week, and my skin is so soft and my products absorb much better.
    But yes, let me be the cautionary tale. I still have a pink scar on my nose from where my skin sloughed off...not fun

    • @Jasmine215100

      Could you have been allergic to the ingredients of salicylic acid?

    • @Iflie
      @Iflie 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I don't doubt it's possible but it sounds like a big concentration. Some acid peels really do work by burning the top ;layers of skin of but I've used salicilic acid daily for years and it just helped. But it was a product for daily use.
      Puss filled blisters also sounds like it might be a massive allergic reaction.

    I do use The Ordinary Peeling Solution, but infrequently. The directions are pretty clear: Do not leave on for longer than 10 minutes. It is not recommended to use more than twice per week. Contact of the product with the skin must be of limited frequency or duration. Sadly, it is people who do not read or follow the directions who are messing up their skin 😪

    • @cmntr_
      @cmntr_ 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      It's also very personal. I can't handle 5 % glycolic acid oder 2 % salicylic acid more than once a week, and I've been using them for years and I wouldn't consider my skin sensitive. Start small, patch test and use your noggins, people ;)

    • @ItsBlackSheepVision
      @ItsBlackSheepVision 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      For beginners even less frequent. If I ever purchase it I'll only use it once in two weeks. Also like the other commenter said: patch test first inside your forearm ‼️‼️

    • @cv7958
      @cv7958 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Even twice per week is quite aggressive given it’s percentages. I think this would be best used in rotation with a more gentler exfoliation treatment e.g., 1x a week use The Ordinary AHA/BHA treatment; next week use 1x a week First Aid Beauty Radiance Pads etc.

    A few years ago I had spent the summer on my boat. When fall came I realized that my skin looked leathery, like old shoes. I was using Paula’s Choice at the time so I called them for help and they recommended their 8% AHA cream and told me it would take awhile. Sure enough within two to three months I looked like myself again. So grateful to them.

    Dr. Idriss’s advice on washing in the morning w/ just H2O is doing my skin wonders. I thought I have an oily skin but weirdly enough my skin produced lesser oil now. And exfoliants are really our bffs but dermatologist don’t trust us to DIY because we always overdo it. Lol learned my lesson once when I got my face raw and inflamed. Keep the product longer on skin DOES NOT EQUATE to faster “exfoliation” ☝🏼

    Your closet 😳 ❤😂 In my dreams! I use my acid serum 3x a week, at night after I cleanse and before my moisturizer. My daily moisturizer has a 30 spf so I’m covered the next day! Thank you again for putting this truly important information in simple, fun and easy to understand ways! You crack me up with your enthusiasm! I just wish I could afford more. Tho I am happy with my face (skin) At 60, I’m doing great. I have so few wrinkles and the few I have are so fine. I look in my early 40’s. I credit sunscreen, not smoking and genetics ❤ Tho my sister who is 2 yrs older smokes, uses tanning beds, refuse’s sunscreen and we look easily 20 years apart! She hates me and actively comes at me because of it! I’ve had to get a Restraining Order! (I’m not joking) our Mother is almost 88 and has so few wrinkles and sagging it’s crazy! She looks 70 and a healthy vibrant 70! I wish I could send my younger self flowers for using sunscreen like I did lol So I promise you younger ladies, your 60 yr old self is begging you lol wear that sunscreen! 😊

    Thank you for this. There was a woman in the “DIY skincare community” who was excessively using chemical peels & other exfoliants. She ended up looking much older instead of younger which surprised me. I thought of her as an example when you said over-exfoliating can make one look older. I too need to be careful. I use Retin-A at night & glycolic acid serum in the morning for skin rejuvenation. At times, I get pimples from doing so & now I know why. 😬

I've tried to say these things for quite a while, ever since I've noticed this idea of using efoliating acids every single day, twice a day, even in a single skincare routine, and the companies, influencers and bloggers jumped at me, saying I'm spreading fake informations. Exfoliating acids:
    Tips:
    1. Don't over exfoliate, do it on weekly basis
    2. Exfoliate at night after cleansing and before serum, moisturiser.
    3. Always follow up exfoliating acids with sunscreen the next morning.
    AHA: Need pH less than 4, concentration between 4 to 10%.
    Use 3 to 4 times a week.
    ○ Glycolic acid (Small) : It can penetrate the deepest and help with collagen production
    ○ Lactic acid (Medium) : It helps to even out skin tone. It mostly helps with brightening.
    ○ Mandelic acid (Large) : It is fat soluble and it will not go that deep.
    BHA: These are oil soluble. You can use salicylic acid Facewash once a day
    □ It has anti-inflammatory benefits

    Ooh yess! Too many online forums and 'self diagnosis'
    I ended up making my skin too sensitive and dehydrated. After a consult with an injectibles nurse who owned a 'skin aesthetics' salon, I was put on a re-set program of a calming cleanser, sensitive toner and moisturiser and a weekly mask. That was it....the toner is marketed as a ph restorer and calming. Personally I was grateful for a simple routine. My skin literally slurped up those products and I am sure I heard it sighing with relief. LOL. We get SO sucked in with marketing and end up stripping/damaging our skin. My skin is in the best condition ever. I am in my 60s . I am still using the same products and even though I sometimes try other brands I keep returning to this range.

    -oil soluble
    -for oily skin and for rosacea or acne
    3) PHA - PolyHydroxy Acid
    -family of AHA
    -water-soluble
    -transform into acid once applied on the skin
    -for sensitive skin, prone to pigmentation
    - Not all acids are exfoliants (eg. hyaluronic acid)
    Tip: Exfoliate with acids at night
    Myth debunk: If you have darker sink you CAN exfoliate. Just make sure you wear sunscreen no matter what shade you are. BHA (A.K.A. salicylic acid) (once a day)
    *АНА* (3-4 times a week)
    -make you photosensitive
    -MUST wear sunscreen the morning after for up to a week (should be wearing sunscreen anyways 😏)
    -water soluble(draw in moisture) makes your skin dewy
    -good for dry skin.
    1. Glycolic (smallest)
    -great for anti-aging and cell turnover (collagen production)
    -suitable for dry skin
    -Supports dermis (deeper layer gets plumper overtime)
    -smallest AHA, most potent and goes the deepest
    2. Lactic (middle sized)
    -helps mostly with brightening and evening out skin tone and pigmentation
    -less irritation than glycolic
    - Pregnancy safe
    3. Mandelic (biggest)
    -Both water and oil-soluble
    -Good for oilier skin and sensitive or pigment prone skin
    -anti aging benefits
    -good for post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
    -Oil Soluble
    -Goes deep into pores
    -Oily skin, acne or rosacea, keratosis pillaris
    -anti inflammatory benefits
    -derived from a willow bark (active form of aspirin)
    -Won't make you photosensitive
    -derived from willow bark, the active component of aspirin so it has anti-inflammatory properties
    PHA (3-4 times a week)
    -newest, cousin of AHA
    -water-soluble
    -sensitive skin & those prone to hyperpigmentation
    -don't make you photosensitive
    -antioxidant properties
    -antiaging
    -prevents collagen breakdown(inhibits mmps)
    -Slow release- works slowly so it doesn’t sting
    1. Glucanolactone
    2. Lactobionic
    3. Maltobionic - gentlest

    Would you please tell us how to incorporate an exfoliating acid if we’re already using a retinoid in our routine? Thank you 🙏🏻 Love love love your videos ❤️

      Only use the exfoliating acids the nights you're not using retinoids

      I use Tretinoin 6 nights a week. On Sunday night I use the Paula’s Choice AHA/BHA mask for sensitive skin. I use the mask for 10 minutes, rinse it off and follow with a moisturizing toner and my moisturizer. I haven’t had any problems and I have sensitive skin prone to dryness.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      Similar to other comments, I alternate. I use my acids 3 times a week (tuesday, thursday, saturday) and retinol the other 4 times a week (the other days), both in the evening.

      @elijahstars 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @ i do pretty much the same. 3nights retinol, 3nights aha (in my case lactic acid) and i leave 1night as "no exfoliation" night and my skin is way better than it was like a year ago. i have dry skin, by the way.

    • @lizcademy4809

      I also alternate, but between three incompatible products:
      Sat, Tues: retinoid
      Sun, Wed.: copper peptides
      Mon. Thus: acid
      Friday is a day of rest :-)
      This is working well for me. I'm using a fairly strong o-t-c retinal, with no side effects. I have 4 different acid products, from Tarte Knockout (P50 dupe) to a mandelic, and I choose based on how my skin looks and feels.

    First off, thank you for the information! I have been using a toner for months and now know that I have been using it incorrectly. I picked up a Glycolic Acid (AHA) exfoliate toner, which I was using everyday or every other day after showering (for the past 4 months or so). After letting this sink in, I was using a Hyaluronic + Vitamin B5 serum, followed by a light weight moisturizer. I know... YIKES. These are products and actions of my routine I was following before I found your channel.... However, I haven't noticed anything poor or drastic changes to my skin. It's hydrated, not irritated and I don't think I have damaged my barrier as I wear Clarin's 50+ SPF UBV + UVA sunscreen EVERY Day without fail (it hydrates my face, no white cast, and absorbs well/goes on smooth). I am going to switch out my serum, but wondering if I should continue to use the toner as I have been? Or is it smart to dial it down... FYI I am in my early 20's. (Thank you for all of your advice, I am so glad I found your channel!)

    Thank you for everything you do, knowledge is power. The amount of misinformation out there is crazy.
    I went to get a Biologique Recherche facial yesterday. Told the esthetician I use CF Ferulic along with prescription azelaic acid to treat my rosacea. I told her at night I use tret 2-3 times per week and exfoliate 1-2 times per week with lactic acid. She went on to tell me I am overdoing it with too many different acids, and that she would suggest I stop using all that and instead use the p50 lotion daily morning and night because my skin is too dehydrated.....

    Can you advise on a useful schedule that includes both tretinoin and AHA? If I use tret 5 days a week, I don't have 3 to 4 open spots for AHA left, so which one should take a step back? Thank you!

    • @catia_dias
      @catia_dias 3 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      Not sure if this will help, but the general advice that I hear from all the dermatologists I watch on youtube is: to use retinoids 5 times a week and exfoliating acids once a week. So, for example, I use retinoids Mon-Sat and ahas on Sundays. All applied in my night time routine of course. Hope this makes sense and it helps you somehow.

    • @cv7958
      @cv7958 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Retinoids trump AHAs in terms of skincare benefits. Sunscreen and retinoids are the best. In your case, I would do 5x/week with a retinoid and 1 day with an exfoliant (AHA/BHA etc.) and 1 day of rest.

    Thanks for this video! Hoping for a video/deepdive that tackles what serums can be used at the same time within a day. Basically serums that work well together and what doesn't (and what you can use after exfoliating!)
    Or maybe something related to warts/milia? 😊 I know the best option is going to the clinic but it would be nice to know what else can help (aside from exfoliating)

    If consumers would read the directions on the Ordinary's peeling solution it states to use up to 2 times a week for no more than 10 minutes. Some creators just overdo things to get more followers.

      I think the acids are overused to rush the process. People think the more they use them the quicker the results, unfortunately using acids like these comes with negative results of irritation, inflammation, weak skin barrier. I've learned to use actives with caution and in moderation.

    • @Maialeen

      I've never once had an issue with that peeling solution. Went through 3 bottles. Tired of platforms like tiktok that encourage content so short that there's no other choice than to cover topics in a shallow way and try to attention grab with ridiculousness. I never found it to be some nuclear strength product. All it takes is reading instructions and having at least half a brain. And the fact that adults still need to be told that up to 10 minutes doesn't mean 10 minutes. If you feel like 3 is enough, DO 3.

      Which goes hand in hand with blindly hopping on bandwagon trends without paying attention to details. People are often in a rush to mimic trends because they need to feel relevant, which is a whole different problem, but kind of becomes a safety issue because that peel can hurt even if you do use it correctly and carefully.

    I really hope you see this because I ABSOLUTELY LOVE your approach, and your personality and the passion and knowledge you have for skin is just infectious! I have recently made the choice to swap out most of the skincare products you are recommending for hormone health as lots of the chemicals disrupt your endocrine system. Have you considered more natural alternatives, and would you be open to creating videos providing effective science backed alternatives - there are so many brands out there taking advantage of women that want a natural option who don’t understand the science terms and you could be so amazing at bridging that gap ❤️ I love you work thank you!

      Are derms/estheticians that expensive where you live? They zap it away in a second while at home stuff may or may not work, take a lot of time and financial investment in products. Anyways since milia is a keratin buildup on the skin I would expect that keeping the area clean, regular exfoliation and not using heavy creams on the area to be of benefit. Probay retinoids too.

    I hear this a lot and I try to use them as less as possible but I use them about 5-6 times a week… I been using the Glow Recipe PHA-BHA ( I know, fragrance) that’s the only one I use and only in the mornings, after just splashing my face. I’m very prone to black heads and this product helps on keeping them under control. My morning and night routine are pretty hydrating. Still no irritation so far been doing this for a while. I’ve tried doing it just twice a week and it’s not effective. (Yes I’ve used Paula’s choice, these two are my top BHAs :) (adapalene at night)
    Great video like always!!
    I been wanting to try a PHA-AHA-BHA product, if they were separate I’d gave a hard time alternating… just easier having all three in one…

    I do use The Ordinary glycolic acid toner on my arms, it's great 😃
