I found this episode very interesting: My mother had beautiful skin up to her 80’s. When I grew up, she never had disposable income to spend on expensive skin care. Our family doctor advised to do use glycerin instead. This was in the early 50s, and she did so all her life on face and hands. Some years ago, I bought some glycerin at CVS but it was not like it. It was very thick and syrupy and unpleasant on the skin. I discovered recently the Now brand on Amazon. It is still quite thick but I use it on my legs and arms as my skin is very dry and dehydrated. I'm not a dermatologist but I knew about 20 years ago that glycerin is a better humectant and moisturizer than hyaluronic acid based solely from my own experience
I started out with hyaluronic acid (HA) and sooo wanted it to work on my dry skin, since everyone seemed to be hyped on HA. After a few days using HA during the very dry air conditions of German winter I realized that HA is basically sucking out water from my skin, leaving it dry and flaky. I guess at least during winter time HA is just not working for me. However, glycerin works super well as a humcetant for me, I love it. On top, it's so much easier to purchase :)
You've made my life easier, and these are affordable! I live at 5000 feet, in the high desert, and HA is an invitation to dry skin. But it's hard to find products without it. So I really appreciate this video and the list.
Yes! I bought glycerin and rosewater a while back and it made such a fantastic difference on my skin. Now I just buy a bottle of glycerin and mix it with distilled water like u showed in your video, and use it to fill up a mist bottle. I love it!!! I feel like it really lasts a long time. And also I feel like like I can't over hydrate with it.
I'm not a derm, but I had 6-8 treatments over the period of 18 - 24 months w/the Gentlase by Candela when it was introduced years ago. It was life changing. All the best to you.
Thank you Dr Shereene for explaining the difference between hyaluronic acid and glycerin products for clearly and easy to understand. I’m new with using glycerin products.
I’ve mixed food grade rose water 15:1 with glycerin from the drugstore and sprayed it on my face every morning before moisturizer and then make up since 1994. A 90-year-old woman with beautiful skin told me about it back then, and I’ve used it ever since. It works.

Could you maybe do videos about an example skin care routine for all the skin types/concerns? That would be really helpful!
@@quixotic7460 Because too much glycerin makes the final product sticky, so you replace some of it with very little HA and keep it pleasant to use with same effect on the skin. Since glycerin is dirt cheap (and pretty much default ingredient), you advertise the HA on the label.

It has truly helped me in gathering data to determine what I should stay away from and the percentages of actives I should stick to for my poor dry, sensitive skin. I was hoping you could go through some suggestions for people with eczema prone skin, especially those of us that get it in our face, neck and chest area. As I've gotten older my skin has become more sensitive and it has been a challenge to find formulas that are effective for brightening and texture issues that won't cause a flare up.
La Roche-Posay has an amazing glycerin based calming serum - Toleriane Ultra Dermallegro serum. It has HA and betaine too but the star is glycerin in it high in the INCI list.
Many years ago, having read that glycerin soap was good for the skin, I bought glycerin bars to wash my hands but noticed that the skin on my hands was drier. I started thinking if something attracts water, where is it getting the water from? It seemed to be that it was from my hands, so stopped using it. However, when I see it included in products, I don't have any problems. Listening to this detailed description has taught me glycerin is not an enemy.

My son had the worst eczema and no eczema cream seemed to help. The only thing that stopped it in its tracks was glycerine. We mix it in all his cerave body cream and it works wonders in moisturizing his skin.
I was really all in on hyaluronic acid products for quite a few years, but since finding you, i've found a new appreciation of glycerin based products and my skin loves it.
Would love a video addressing dry, flaky skin on your scalp. Best way to prevent inflammation, etc. Thank you!

My son has super red dry chapped cheeks and ever since I’ve started to watch Shereene and get educated I use moisturizer Aveeno calm and restore and the la rosch posey baume B5 and his skin is finally healing. I realize that anything for him with HA in it was chapping him more despite it having other great ingredients. Thanks so much for the education.
Sheila I cannot decide between the two which one to buy? How come you use both products?
@@syloosh the baume B5 is thicker and is better for winter months and the Aveeno is gel based so better for summer. This is what works for us. You can choose based on your climate. I’m in Canada so we have very cold winters that chap the skin and humid hot summers so anything to thick just feels gross on the skin when it’s humid.
Hi Doc! I just came across your channel tonight and I have been watching your “Let’s Get Intimate” videos and I learned a lot! Now, before watching this video I honestly thought that you’re in your late 20’s. When you said you’re “nearly 40 years old” I was really shocked, you look radiant and stunning, your skin looks so healthy and flawless and you are so beautiful!
La Roche Posay’s Cicaplast hand cream (yes HAND cream) has 30% glycerin and 4% niacinamide and it works incredibly on the face!
Absolutely love you Shereene! Your bluntness and goofball side comments make all of us out here feel like we are zoom chatting with a close friend! You are a brand marketing genius!
All the Gen Z peeps freaking about Hyram's new skincare line.. and I'm here beyond excited to see Dr. Idress talking about her upcoming formulations 👁👄👁
That guy is ridiculous lol. Not even a proper dermat or an esthetician.

Wait, you're working on skincare?? You better make sure to make it available in Europe!!!
And Australia 🥰
I was excited to hear her say that. Glad I live in the US and hope it will be offered for you guys in Europe as well.
And South Africa, please

You've made my life easier, and these are affordable! I live at 5000 feet, in the high desert, and HA is an invitation to dry skin. But it's hard to find products without it. So I really appreciate this video and the list.
High desert in California?

Yes, Bio oil as well! I'm sure there are numerous others.
Wait.. what's the Egyptian healing cream? First time hearing about it as an Egyptian 😂
Please do an episode on facial hair and lasers in general 😭❤️
I think their efficiency should be questioned and talked about more often.

Would love to hear about in-office procedures like lasers and peels vs at-home products
I’ve mixed food grade rose water 15:1 with glycerin from the drugstore and sprayed it on my face every morning before moisturizer and then make up since 1994. A 90-year-old woman with beautiful skin told me about it back then, and I’ve used it ever since. It works.
Do you use it during the day? Or do you have to wash it off in the morning?
Youre probs the most entertaining but educational person here on youtube and i fuckin love you!
Omg someone finally mentions the neutrogenia Norwegian hand lotion. That stuff has saved my hands so much over the years especially during clinic with all the hand sanitizing when I was in school. Love that stuff and I always pray they don’t discontinue it.

Love the way this lady explains the Science "simply and concisely" and....with the good humour thrown in😂😂, Thankyou Dr S !!! Really enjoyed this video and I personally love when products have that tacky feeling on the skin as I know that's what is keeping the moisture locked in and I wake up hydrated!

Just came across you video while researching glycerin. I love the way you explain it all in a creative and easy to understand instead of doctor talk. You go a follower now.
I learned about glycerin in hand soap years ago and it changed my life. It’s essential
Growing up in Pakistan, our mothers and aunts used to use and rave about a homemade concoction made from Glycerin, Rose Water, and lemon juice for bringing life back to dull skin.
I just looked at the ingredient lists of my skincare products that are marketed as HA products, and they do contain HA but Glycerin is always like the second ingredient on the list..are they using the benefits of glycerin but market it as if HA is doing all the work?
also, i really love your channel! Could you maybe do videos about an example skin care routine for all the skin types/concerns? That would be really helpful!
No, they use the combined powers of both.
Glycerin is usually used in concentration 15-20%, hyaluronic acid is used at 1-2%.
@@kikiTHEalien so does it works in this proportion?
@@Alfakkin Yes, these are the active concentrations for these ingredients.
@@kikiTHEalien what is the point of adding HA if you already have so much glycerin there doing the heavy lifting?
@@quixotic7460 Because too much glycerin makes the final product sticky, so you replace some of it with very little HA and keep it pleasant to use with same effect on the skin.
Since glycerin is dirt cheap (and pretty much default ingredient), you advertise the HA on the label.
I love the Vanicream daily facial moisturizer! It's loaded with glycerin and is a fabulous affordable product.
I just purchased it a week ago.. and am impressed!
In winter my skin is super dry. My legs are the driest, they literally itch a lot and leave marks. So I have been using glycerin and water/rose water during winter since childhood and it works the best. I should consider using it in summar too hehe

I use Pears Natural Glycerin Soap to cleanse, and a glycerin moisturizer. I NEVER go in the sun, but take Vitamin D supplements instead, as we absorb it from the sun and need it for strong bones and teeth. As women, we’re prone to Osteoporosis as well. I also take prenatal vitamins and Vitamin C. I drink a lot of water as well. I’m 57 and haven’t a wrinkle or spot on my face, chest or body. She’s right about glycerin and drinking plenty of water. I’ve never had any work or injections. From one Doc to another, she knows what she’s talking about!
I absolutely adore your channel!! I share it with all my friends and family whenever they ask for my advice on skin care formulas and products. It's so important to get facts from people in the business like doctors, chemists, and aestheticians. Thank you for all the content and no-frills, honest recommendations.
