  • These shoulder strengthening exercises with a resistive band are a great way to strengthen your shoulder after an injury or surgery. Read Doctor Jo’s blog post about this video at www.askdoctorjo.com/content/sh...
A great way to rehab your shoulder is to do exercises with a resistive band. They come in many different colors so make sure the one you have is the right resistance for you. They can be used if you have been diagnosed with shoulder tendonitis, bursitis, adhesive capsulitis, frozen shoulder, shoulder impingement, or if you are recovering from a surgery.
The first exercise is going to be rows or scapular retraction. You can use your feet as an anchor. You want to keep your elbows in close to your body and make a rowing motion. Try to squeeze your shoulder blades together when you pull back. Make sure you are using a slow controlled motion.
The next exercise is going to be punches or scapular protraction. Wrap the band around you, and keep your arms straight in front of you. Punch forward, but try not to bend your elbows.
Now you are going to hold the band in front of you and put your thumbs up on top. Keep your elbows bent by your sides. This exercise is external rotation. Pull your hands apart, but try not to pull your elbows away from your sides.
The final exercises are going to be performed standing. Try to keep your arm straight the whole time and don't bend your elbows. Your thumb is going to be pointed upwards. You are going do put your arm out at a 45 degree angle which we call scaption. Then you are going to do abduction which is out to the side.
The last two are front and back which are flexion and extension. You don't need to raise the band way above your head. You can bring it to a 90 degree angle which is where your arm is parallel to the floor.

You're welcome!! Sounds like you might have an impingement. Usually the referred pain is down the side of the arm. If you are getting better, keep it up! Sometimes it takes a long time to heal. The reason for not going above 90 degrees is to avoid more irritation into the impingement area. Good luck!!

Hi there, thank you sooo much! I had a AC separation (fell off a bike pretty violently, my collarbone dislocated and went up about an inch). Had a surgery (with tightrope) and now I'm in rehabilitation phase. I'm gonna do exactly these exercises beside ROM ones when home. Very detailed, down to earth, concise and helpful video. Keep on the goob job and cheerz from Croatia! :)

Thanks Dr Jo for the suggested views. I have been working on strengthening my shoulder with all these exercises except the modified push up. Sadly, I fear I may be looking at surgery soon! The exercises hurt still, but when relaxed my arm pulls out of the socket. PT has had me working through the pain to get stronger. I am getting stronger for daily activities, but just sitting gravity pulls my arm out of place. Sleeping is hard because I feel it pull forward or backwards depending how I'm laying. Very frustrating! It has been almost 4 months. Thank you for any suggestions! And thank you for your videos!! Julie

You're welcome! Unfortunately, sometimes you just have to have surgery :-( I had shoulder surgery about 3 years ago. It was an injury I had been dealing with for a decade trying to "fix it." I got my shoulder as strong as I could right before the surgery, and my recovery went very well. As soon as I woke up from the surgery, I felt better than I had in years. The stronger and more flexible you can be before, the better it will be afterwards. Good luck with everything!

Hi Dr Jo! Well, it is 11 weeks after I had my shoulder surgery (rotator cuff & multi-directional instability). Surgery was successful! I just have the frustration of rehab. I do all my exercises and do feel a little stronger, but my flexibility is a problem. I'm told it is because the Dr had to tighten up my ligaments to correct the instability. Do you have any suggestion for improving flexibility? I stretch with the door frame and bands right now. I'm also told my shoulder is not tracking correctly. What am I able to do to correct this issue? Thank you for any suggestions!! Julie

Are you in therapy right now? Do you know your motion numbers?

I am in PT now. I do not know my motion numbers, but I will ask tomorrow
if my PT is not canceled. I'm from Miami and we are preparing for a
hurricane/tropical storm to hit us. I will get back to you about my
      numbers. Thank you!!
