    I wanted this to succeed so badly but ... the GX 550 just made this thing superfluous. If the Ineos was closer to $50k than $80k it might be an option.

    • @randallsmith7885

      Totally agree. Just saw my first one on the road today. Very cool looking, but compared to the GX, with a Toyota six cylinder for $20-30k cheaper, I can deal with the GX. And then we also have to see what the new Land Cruiser can do.

    • @marcochavanne
      @marcochavanne 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Their target market is really the people who would be buying a Defender moreso than someone considering a baby Land Cruiser or the GX550.
      Side note, its a bummer for larger adventurous families because neither the Grenadier or OverTrail GX trims offer a 3rd row.
      Which leaves the TRD Pro Sequoia which shares the same chassis as the 300 series Land Cruiser if you need more than 5 seats and some off-road capability. That presents its own issues though. The Sequoia is around 8" longer than the LX600 and 4" longer than the GX550 with poopier approach, break-over, and departure angles.

      They are two different vehicles for two different people. I don't think there's going to be much cross shopping beyond the general "person who has $80k and wants 4WD" demographic.
      As far as success, unless you can find an order rejection at a dealer you're not going to find one for another 6-12 months. I'm concerned long term, as anyone should be, but there are plenty of people who are interested in this type of thing that aren't exactly in the GX demo.

    • @PeakDecline
      @PeakDecline 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      @@marcochavanne The GX is far more off-road focused than the current Defender. Land Rover changed that model into something no serious off-roader would ever buy. The GX, Sequoia and possibly the Lexus LX are the closest competition to the Grenadier in price and purpose in the US market. Globally this competes mainly against the Land Cruiser 70 Series and Land Cruiser 300, of course.

    I have an early build Grenadier in the UK and I have now done over 16,000 miles. Mine is a basic diesel station wagon in Britannia Blue with a white roof with a few options; unlike you I have the extended electrics, the safari roof, tow gear and the first aid kit in the door. I don't have the lockers or the electric safety gear. It is not a mass market car, so was almost guaranteed to be expensive, as they don't have the economies of scale of Toyota, Mercedes, Jeep or Ford.
    I love it; it replaced an old Defender and is much improved and works well for me. I don't do luxury, but my family prefer it. It had some teething issues when released but these have been fixed by the dealer. My dealer has mainly agricultural franchises and a Korean vehicle franchise.

    • @GallatinMan

Ok, it is a bit quirky, I expected that as a new vehicle... Fantastic engine; it was too big to fit in a carpark initially, but I love it!! As my son pointed out having panels that can be removed easily was a plus. The lack of a speed or tach readout behind the wheel bugs me. It also bugged me on the Mini too. If you opt for the BFGs the tire is 31.7" tall (according to BFG). The salesman showed a picture from one of his customers that already mounted 35s with no lift. It looked really good, and he's had no issues with rubbing.

    To Alex and his point about having the unlockable center diff in 4-low. This means you can use low range for backing up trailers in tight situations on pavement. One of the vehicles I learned to drive in was a 1989 F-150 regular cab short bed 4x4 5-speed manual transmission & 300c.i. I-6 engine with manual locking hubs. We left the hubs unlocked unless it was snowing or we were driving up a fire road. But, we used low range all the time for maneuvering trailers and being able to leave the front hubs unlocked made it perfect.

Of course what it should have is a clutch and a manual shifter and a six speed gearbox….but we live in a world of lazy drivers. How is an automatic transmission vehicle going to know you want to hold third gear to the bottom of the hill then swing left and power up the next one…only the driver has eyes and a brain to establish that plan of action.

It is very useful in Europe, where they have permanent cameras on the side of the roads that take a picture of the license plate every time you exceed the speed limit. The ticket is then mailed to your house. In your commute, you would know where they are, but if you drive itineraries occasionally, you can be caught by surprise.

    Wow! Great review guys! I really feel like I know the Ineos Grenadier a lot better now.
    First of all, kudos to Sir Ratcliffe on throwing caution to the wind and building something an enthusiast would want. I think as regular people (without billions in cash 😂) usually say "If I were to build an off-roader, I would give it this and that" he actually did it, so that is really cool.
    As far as the pricing, I think there is something that sets the Grenadier behind the competition immediately, and that is Chicken tax. From my understanding, this vehicle is a ladder frame vehicle produced not within North America (France) and that would subject it to a 25% import tariff, am I correct in thinking that? That must get passed along to the consumer if a business were to remain profitable. Does this vehicle seem like it should be more of like a $55-$60K vehicle? That would make sense to me.
    The Ineos Grenadier is unique in that it is sort of it's own thing. Most similar to a Wrangler, but living well above the price range. It's almost in that premium off-roader segment, such as a Land Rover, but the fit and finish is not there. It's unique. I like it. $80K without heated or power seats is just a head scratcher. But there again, maybe that was influenced by Chicken tax. I think this is a really good effort from a startup company. Good job guys, can't wait to see you guys take it to Moab.

      The lack of memory seats is because of wading height, the seats need to be able to survive being underwater. Far as I know Wrangler only added this as an option to the Rubicon last year (they also explained it was a wading issue). I wonder if Recaro simply refused to warranty the seat for being underwater, and Ineos decided the cost of developing their own submersible memory seat would have been prohibitive. That would explain the cutouts for controls being on the seat but unused.
