A ton of melee tutorials, even ones labeled beginner, feel like they're made for players with years of experience already, which I understand because of how much depth the game has, but still find frustrating. This is an awesome tutorial that presents concepts in a way I can grasp as a complete noob, really appreciate it!
I understand that a bunch of viewers have been asking for an “Are You a Mewtwo Main?” and we definitely aren’t trying to ignore you guys. Kira and Kellen, the ones who are in charge of this video series, have been really busy. I promise that it’ll be done eventually, but in the meantime, my main focus is to teach and discuss Melee topics that I feel knowledgeable about. I want to put out good content, so I hope you’ll be understanding when new videos are released and they aren’t on topics that you were hoping for. -- CDK
@SSBM Tutorials you guys are doing a great job. There is absolutely no way you can make everyone happy, especially in a game like this where there is a huge learning curve. Don't let the haters get you down!
I'm planning on getting into the melee tourneys at my local game shop, but I've never played Melee other than watching a few tourneys. but this intro was a good start, really insightful and concise.
If we're talking basic ledge options, I gotta say Marth has one of the better get up attack animations because of the way it con push spacies off the ledge when they choose to land on stage.
Ledge Attack under 100% has more ledge occupancy than Ledge Roll under 100% for EVERY character (~ 5 frames). Here is a summary: docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/18gzqbrl-CeQ3aNBmb45gK_Q8G459V8jAqbtI6E_RyLM/edit?usp=sharing The reverse is true for over 100%, however.
Ironically I feel Bowser's below 100% attack is easily the best. It covers so much area, has a massive hitbox which can even be used to knock people back off the stage and had crazy invincibility and hogs the ledge. The only downside is that it's so good that people spam it and others can just use shield to stop it easily, which can still be countered by other advanced ledge options like Koopa klaw
Can you make a guide for adaption? Like a flowchart of what options beat what other options. I know that this is really hard to do, since there are so many options; but maybe you can boil it down to general things that all characters can do, like grab, wavedash back, oos stuff, shield, etc.
Puffs ledge jump is probably the best option especially considering it's on puff. Other characters have great ledge jumps like dk and others, but puffs in combination with her crazy mobility, jumps, and insane aerial mobility make her ledge jump super strong. Samus's normal getup is pretty OK too because it's animation is a little longer and is confusing when her invincibility wears off, which can result in a poorly timed punish of the getup, where samus can then get a punish. Kinda gimmicky tho
at 5:00 ledge attack holds the ledge for the longest, not roll (under 100%, above roll is actually the longest) and this is true for every character. I just uploaded a short video about this.
I am of the opinion that the spacies ledge-dash is probably the best off of ledge option in the game. Falcon drop jump knee or up air would probably be number 2
That's so weird how long the animation lasts when you roll onto the sage from the ledge. Based off some clips it seems as if a player should grab the ledge when the other player is rolling onto the stage and is not even holding the ledge! I heard some payers don't like the edgehogging method but I feel it should be tweaked a little bit so you don't spam but can instead hog the edge with skill and precise timing. Cant wait to see next week's video, wonder if you'll talk about pushing back and falling off the ledge and jumping onto the stage as an advance technique?!
so, here's a thought, say for the next Smash game, Salty Fries decides that he'll return the ledge properties back to Melee's. However he changes it and adds something called Grip. >100 = 11 seconds on ledge
MH| PinkSquidz Grip seems like a difficult concept to signal to players. It sounds like the swimming mechanic in Brawl: you could only stay on the surface of water for so long, depending on your percentage, but you could never be sure of exactly how long you had before you had to get out of the water. I really like what Project M does -- you can only get ledge-intangibility five times before you touch the ground. This still lets you refresh intangibility for less abusive purposes (edgehogging, mixing up how to return from ledge) but still prohibits stalling.
Intangible. I've been playing Smash Brothers and traditional FG's since 2006 and never have heard anyone say Intangible when talking about fighting games. Invincibility. That's the correct term.
Garrett DeCrosta intangible is when you hit someone and it has no effect whatsoever, while invincible means no damage is taken but there is still hit lag
In general, invincible is a good catch all term across fighting games, but Melee actually has three distinct states of vulnerability, Normal, Intangible (no damage or hit lag), and Invincible (no damage, but causes hit lag). Thus, only using the term invincible does not unambiguously define the state the character is in. Invincible is a good enough word for most conversations, but when you're talking at the level of frame data, and trying to be precise as to what the exact state of a character is, intangible is a necessary term to distinguish between these two states. And it just so happens that all ledge options have only intangibility frames, no invincibility frames, making it seem like the term is entirely absent from the game.
Captain Viable I disagree, going offstage in Smash 4 is usually the difference between a win and a loss. It's all about knowing what to do and how it will affect your positional advantage in the long-run. Going offstage in Melee is usually either an unavoidable Bair or an edgehog, unless you're like me and you play Link. Then you get the fancy offstage stuff. It feels very linear and boring to me.
Captain Viable Smash 4's mechanics fit Smash 4 better, and Melee's fit Melee better. Melee has more stocks, so stocks are taken faster, with things like ledgehogging adding to that. If Smash 4 had ledge hogging, matches wouldn't last longer than a minute, which would be very boring. I understand why someone who doesn't play Melee wouldn't like it's ledge mechanics honestly. I don't really especially like ledge hogging, but it's not a bad mechanic.

you guys really seem like you play for fun and your own personal feelings. Great video
Doctor Mario would be a good one to do as well!!!
Okay
SSBM Tutorials what about your low tier list? arent you gonna make it?
do more falco tutorials
@SSBM Tutorials you guys are doing a great job. There is absolutely no way you can make everyone happy, especially in a game like this where there is a huge learning curve. Don't let the haters get you down!

Thank the lord you guys are uploading again
Please finish your tier list. That's all I want. Thanks.
A skilled Roy can hold the ledge for 12 seconds
Ledgedash Out-Of-Shield
How the fuck
off randle
Bowsers get up attack is amazing
Excited for the next part! I love these videos; please keep 'em comin'! : D
If we're talking basic ledge options, I gotta say Marth has one of the better get up attack animations because of the way it con push spacies off the ledge when they choose to land on stage.

oh
That's why you see the pros do that and not roll
Where's the last part of the tier list??? I've been dying to see this for months
Not sure if it's the best, but Bowser's ledge attack is super good!
Bowser's U100 attack is amazing. Best is game by far!
Yoshis run off edge and up b is pretty good.
Please do a complete guide on Sheik's needles!!!
Your tutorials are super useful, thank you very much!!
I NEED THIS VIDEO SO BAD! I always ledge dash and just get hit off, or do regular getup/roll, and eat a smash attack.
Ironically I feel Bowser's below 100% attack is easily the best. It covers so much area, has a massive hitbox which can even be used to knock people back off the stage and had crazy invincibility and hogs the ledge.

I'm personally fine with edge hogging because Melee itself acknowledges it with the "Edge Hog" bonus.
Until you play falcon, and you just want to recover once

Seems like a good exercise to do yourself... I play Peach so I think I might do this vs the top 8 for her.
Bowser's ledge attack before 100 is good and on Yoshi's his ledge jump lands u right on the platform which is useful
Bowser's ledge attack is pretty nice.
Puffs ledge jump is probably the best option especially considering it's on puff. I was so curious to see what your low tier list would be
Bowser below 100% ledge attack is probably the best. Great range and hitboxes. It can be punished though, if you don't get hit by it.
Will you do a How to practice Pikachu eventually ? I want to pick up Pikachu as my Main.
I am of the opinion that the spacies ledge-dash is probably the best off of ledge option in the game. Falcon drop jump knee or up air would probably be number 2
@Julián Tricánico I like it. Looking FWD to the more advanced stuff.
hmm standard getup can be used when edge guarding sheik, but i guess i'll be expecting that in the next video?
What about letting go of the ledge (away or down on the control stick)?
can u please make a video on the fox marth matchup due to so much controversy on it?
what about ledgedrop? ie drop, jump waveland jab
so im a brand new player, and you didnt cover how to actually grab onto the ledge
Falco cash register @ 4:40
Let Hax$ TELL YOU about the ledge.

Why isn't dropping from the edge one of the basic options? You can pair that up with another recovery move or a regular jump to get back on.
You can get punished from any option.
what about your tier list ? :c you still have to do the low tiers
Hey guys, is there a colour overlay for intangibility/invincibility in 20xx 4.07? If so, how do I get it? Thanks!
I think its right on the d pad while holding y? Cant remember for sure just mess around with d pad directions while holding jump buttons or triggers
Thanks!
Pls bottom tiers for tier list!!!!!

However he changes it and adds something called Grip.
>100 = 11 seconds on ledge
Eh, I want smash 4's once you grab the ledge once you lose invicibility but I want ledge hogging to return.
MH| PinkSquidz
Grip seems like a difficult concept to signal to players. It sounds like the swimming mechanic in Brawl: you could only stay on the surface of water for so long, depending on your percentage, but you could never be sure of exactly how long you had before you had to get out of the water.

How do you shoot yourself to edge like that. Ive seen absolutely no one simply cover that.
Best ledge attack is probably Bowser and best tournament winner is probably Ganondorf
Idk if im wrong or i dont know how to do it, but i cant seem to be able to grab on to the ledge for whatever reason, this kinda ruins my experience.
Cdk the legend
bowser has the best ledge attack
Everything you need to know: Stay on the ledge.
Pikachu's get up attack is pretty decent against a recovering marth and seeing as marth is pretty common i'd say its most likely to be the best.
Are you a pichu main? Has he done that yet?
Thanks so much
Do a vid on young link ft. Axe
Donkey kongs ledge attack is the best basic, he throws out a hit box and you go to like the center of the stage
Bowser does the same but retreats afterwards, it's objectively superior
@MH| PinkSquidz I like it. I also like Salty Fries lol
Are you a DK main?
I second this
you know him well
He’s finally back
Low tier list?
Is it ok to play melee with switch pro controller with dolphin? im not gonna buy gamecube controller cuz i just got switch pro controller.
StarRunner I have to say no. Wait until you can buy a GCC for $30
Ok, i mean i can buy GCc but im not sure is it worth it to start melee 2017.
StarRunner melee isn't going anywhere anytime soon, and it'll be popular no matter what happens in the future. There's no reason to not play it now.
StarRunner It is
Just ordered used official controller for 15$€ + adapter for 14$. I kinda dont care is it good or not. i just wanna get started for now :)
You forgot to mention, you cant grab the ledge if you're holding up, either that or ive been having a glitch occur every time
Lmao "the space animals"
Can you make 'Are you a Yoshi player?' please
I do not play video games at all. Yet I have been charged 2 times for $19.95. Why or how is it that I'm being charged?
I don't know Roberta.
After 11 seconds when under 100%, huh? Ok melee, i see you...
i love edging in melee
Pichu has best ledge option
ledge guard is so beautifull damn
For part 2 they are inviting m2k
Intangible. I've been playing Smash Brothers and traditional FG's since 2006 and never have heard anyone say Intangible when talking about fighting games. Invincibility. That's the correct term.
Garrett DeCrosta intangible is correct
Garrett DeCrosta intangible is when you hit someone and it has no effect whatsoever, while invincible means no damage is taken but there is still hit lag
Not at all true. Both are correct, but no one says intangible when discussing fighting games. lol

theres definitely no hit lag in the invincibility you get from spawn and ledge.
Are you a Mewtwo Player?
Mewtwo is your main if:
1. You are a taj fan
2. You are into alien hentai/futa
3. You hate dash dancing
Finish the stuff you've left unfinished >.>
not trying to be ledgy but this was basic af
HUGS69
But isnt ledge dashing a basic tech. *kappa*

Play Smash 4, the ledge mechanics don't suck in that gameq
Imagine actually believing this.
Matthew Juliana
Eh. Which ledge mechanics are better is just preference.
(I'm a Sm4sh player BTW)

hussein335 He just said basic stuff tho, wtf
Are you new here?
I thought I already knew but it was not, in fact, Kira.
