I feel like Westballz utilizes edge cancels the best however I would say jigglypuff benefits the most from them by far. it's almost effortless for her to edge cancel anywhere on any stage, and gives her even more crazy aerial options. Falco has has awesome side b options on to battlefield and such, and Marth and captain falcon have the right jump height/speed for easy cancels on yoshis, but these options are extremely predictable and easy to punish. It's basically up to hungrybox to put options in to the jigglypuff meta but dair>ledgecanceled uptilt> rest is such a good platform and recovery option I'm surprised it isn't used more often. So yeah, chalk one up for the jiggs
1. N0ne definitely utilizes platforms to the fullest imo (not just edgecancels tho) 2. Spacies usually get the most out of it just because of their side b. Probably falco a little more than fox cuz you can extend combos on some stages with his meteor hitbox like you said westballz in this video.
1. Westballz or n0ne 2. Probably Spacies, more specifically Falco. Edge-Cancelling seems to be more versatile for fast-fallers. +Alek Vuksinic mentions that Ganon possibly benefits the most from Edge-Cancelling as it removes much of the lag that Ganon has in his aerials, which I can agree. ---#AskSSBMT--- Kira, when it comes down to using X or Y for jumping, do you think they each have a specific advantage/disadvantage that goes beyond just preference? I've found that Zain, the sick Marth main has utilised ledge cancelling the most in competitive play. His Marth combos using moves like forward and down air have been incredible in terms of usefulness and style. I also think jigs can use edge cancelling well. Its very easy to execute with her amazing aerial drift.
N0ne has some of the craziest edge cancels. His recovery with side b and up b always utilizes a crazy edge cancel and he has some really tricky hax dashes when he recovers as well.
1. n0ne, Zain, Westballz 2. Ganon (He has a lot of land lag on his moves so cancelling it spruces up his movement big time, and edgecancelling up b is crucial to survive edgeguards)
V-canceling is when you press l or r when you are in certain states. It mildly reduces your knockback. Not many top players use it, but if you wanna go more indepth, wizzrobe's stream covered for a little bit
What's the best way to increase capacity and consistency of "reading comprehension" in smash? Are there any mental exercises that can help with recognizing an opponents movement/tech habits and adapting to them? Or is this something that simply comes from playing the game a lot?
Slinky as far as i know it simply comes with experience and being aware of their tendencies and how to counter those options. would be interesting to see if someone figured out a drill for that
theres also certain habits that u can read without knowing anything specifically abiut your opponent because ppl in general tend to do it. most common is probably teching in from the corner. another example is going to tpp platform betwen stocks.
Slinky Playing mario will force you to be much more cognizant of neutral. Cant just run in with a short hop fox nair, falco nair/dair. You will actually have to pay attention to recognize the opponents movement and really follow up on tech chases to gain a big punish with Mario
Kira , Kellen or CDK you guys ever gonna make like a yoshi guide at some point or any other characters that are less well documented id really really appreciate it. either way keep doing what you are doing i think the whole community loves what you do
Q1, Axe with his Pikachu, and Westballz with his Falco I'm not sure about Q2... probably Falco as well? then again, it allows Ganon to get rid of a lot of his end lag.
As a Mr. Game and Watch main, edgecanceling is crucial since you can't L-cancel your N-air, B-air and U-air. Being able to edge cancel B-air makes it a great zoning move Being able to edge cancel N-air makes it a great move for covering high recoveries. Doesn't mean that he is the best character for it. but i do think he is the one that needs edge canceling the most
Yo, you guys should just make a 5 hour long crazy in depth novice to advanced tutorial for literally every technique and tool ever discovered or invented in the whole game with every character. Pretty much all that's know to melee executed in the same style and format as the rest of your previous videos.
Kira, Are you going to continue/finish your official tier list? I really enjoyed your first two segments and would love to see the rest. Thanks so much
Kira: as a 29 year old still playing melee with finger pain and having to take breaks consistently and hearing all these news about finger pain I have to ask.... Is there a zen way to hold the controller? A zen way to go about ease of movement on fingers while wave dashing, dash dancing etc? Every time I observe myself and other melee players in general there's only tension everywhere! Heck let's start with our facial expressions while we are playing they are completely tight and stressed. And let's not even go to our fingers and how much they are suffering throughout. So my true question: Is melee a game that can only be played during our teen and 20's? Most sports go about movement very smoothly and natural even instruments. However so far the observations I made with the game cube controller and the inputs per second do not promote ease of movement. I know this is a lengthy one but I will like to hear your opinion. Thanks for the consideration and everything you guys do for the community.
CDK, do you already know? You can cancel Dolphin Slash on Randall by performing it right as he's entering the stage. The sound comes out, but the animation stops immediately
To Kira, How do you perceive Yoshi currently and do you think he has a lot of potential moving forward with players like Amsa? You didn't place him in your high* tier list video so I was wondering why and if you think he could be a high* tier someday.
zain's use is pretty nutty. weiners utilizes them pretty well too. as for tippity top players maybe hbox ? marth's sword covering so much so quickly might be most beneficial in terms of attacks, but spacies being able to edge cancel side B is also insanely useful. game & watch being able to edge cancel his aerials that can't be L cancelled is cool too :) he definitely benefits a lot from it anyway
Fastfalling after you glide of an edge while in jumpsquat makes you reach your max falling speed way faster. This is actually usefull with multiple characters such as falco, samus, luigi ect. when you want to attack someone under a platform or under the ledge. Im talking way more fallspeed.
Kira, how does one practice tech-skill in the most effective manner? Anyone can answer honestly, but I think a thorough guide on how to practice tech-skill effectively might be the best thing to teach right now.
I think marth gets the most out of edge canceling, he has huge hit boxes and being able to throw those hit boxes out in rapid succession is super good.
Without a doubt, I'd say that Mr. Game & Watch benefits the most from edge-cancelling. He goes from having only two moves that he's able to L-Cancel to having almost no lag on any of his aerials and he can cancel the either 6 frames of lag from his upB or the 40 if he mis-spaces it. His friction is low enough that it isn't a far cry to say that you could edge-cancel all of his aerials anyway.
S2J before would do some crazy edge cancel stuff, but he hasn't done it as often. Westballz is probably the easier answer. Marth's sword offers range in exchange for relatively long cooldown time on his aerials. Edgecanceling Marth's aerials removes that drawback. Also edgecancel rest could actually become a thing someday...
Its not that big of a deal. But having a trigger mod with only hard press makes it near impossible to consistently L cancel stuff like drill moves or on ice climbers shields.
Westballz is really the only top player who is consistent with those edge cancels. you could tell some players (not all) dont mean to edge cancel but react fairly well when they do but Wes noticeable double D-air comes out so fast you know its planned
Hbox actually edge cancels a lot and puff in general seems to benefit from it a lot for obvious reasons. Westballz would probably still be my pick though.
I'd say Westballz utilizes edge cancels the best, because they're actually used to extend combos and recovery options. However, I have a huge soft spot for Axe's flashiness. In all honesty, I don't think I've ever seen him not edge cancel YLink's dair or grounded up B. As for characters, it's probably Falco for the reasons brought up earlier.
Westballz has the best edge cancels. As for which character benefits the most, it has to be the links. Their uairs and dairs are very laggy moves, and using edge cancels makes them much safer.
I'd say Falco, Marth, or Puff benefit from edge-canceling the most. Falco's Side B seems like it has more easy setups on more relevant stages, but in general, because Fox is already so fast, he doesn't really need to edge-cancel that much. Falco is slower, so edge-cancel Side B is really nice, and pairs nicely with his laser. Falco also gets a lot from being on platforms, so it also makes his Dair even stronger. Marth gets way more combos and safe ways to throw out his large disjoints with edge-cancels, so he obviously benefits a lot. Then there's Puff, who can very easily edge-cancel because of her airspeed and drift, and gains a ton of pressure and strong combos/setups off of them. There's also a good case to be made for Falcon, since his combos are improved a lot by edge-cancels (especially if they involve uair).
For anyone, how do you prevent your hands becoming stiff when playing? More often than not, it feels like my hands lock up and don't move as fast, when I try to combat this, my hands feel uncoordinated.
CDK, On a scale from 1- wanting to kill Hugs, how mad are you at him that he doesnt even consider learning how to use chopsticks? (personal answers appreciated)
Kira or CDK whoever wishes to answer, I was wondering if you could cover the different methods people use to execute various techniques. More specifically I understand what buttons to press for various techniques but some people execute them differently and I would like to have a better idea of all the possible ways to execute tech to make sure I am doing what is most efficient. For example there are many different ways to do shine backair with fox/falco and I have found that doing a 270 degree rotation of the joystick works very well for me but before I was doing it differently. Thanks!
1. It's gotta be Westballz right? I can't think of anyone else who is known for edge canceling like he is. 2. I think that edge canceling, while it does great things for Falco's combo game, does crazy things for Falcon's recovery. It might only add a couple of options, but that matters a lot for Falcon because he doesn't have many off stage in the first place.
I think Hungrybox, PewPewU, and n0ne probably use them the best. Even when hungrybox isn't using jiggs, he is edge canceling tons of moves. PewPewU and n0ne also incorporate them into their gameplay all over the place.
Mewtwo on battlefield is great with edge cancel up b and edge cancels in general I also think yoshi is great with edge cancels but imma a little biased but when in my matches i always utilize edge cancelling but fox and falco are the best with edge cancels
Falcon. I grew up watching the best falcons before laying my hands on a GameCube controller, and when I finally got my hands on one falcon just feels right. I love playing him, and I think you should play whoever you have the most fun with.
Kira, or any of you As a newer player, I am not very comfortable with using my shield instead of evading, and I wonder what are some efficient ways to practice shielding?
I think m2k would benefit the most from edge canceling, because when he gets all emo during a set he usually loses
David Betancourt I agree he does use it the best and he won dreamland 2017 on the melee tournament for it
I see what you did
Nick Story joke went right over your head
rofl nice one
nice
Marth definitely has the sexiest edge cancel combos
Damnit hank, roy has the best edge cancel. That pimp ain't right😑
Can u guys make a vid on controller grip styles? Like claw and stuff
-for ssbm
John Smith Bruh you need a video on that ?
Yes
I use Claw myself. I'd love to learn about the different grips and the pros/cons of them.
John Smith claw is mega overrated. Anything you can do with claw you can do with normal. Only really worth it as puff, peach, and fox imo.
Kira
Thoughts on Leffen's video talking about handpains and Kira?
I feel like Westballz utilizes edge cancels the best however I would say jigglypuff benefits the most from them by far. it's almost effortless for her to edge cancel anywhere on any stage, and gives her even more crazy aerial options. 2. Spacies usually get the most out of it just because of their side b. Probably falco a little more than fox cuz you can extend combos on some stages with his meteor hitbox like you said westballz in this video.
Kellen
If you had one melee God to train with for a week, who would it be and why?
Daniel Orphere ik this ain’t for me, but probably mango just because of his tech skill and his experience
What has been the most rewarding part about starting ssbm tutorials?
1. Westballz or n0ne

Movement options is what makes melee fun to watch.
I notice west edge cancelling the most. and for the second question, it's easily fox/Falco. the increased speed it gives then is crazy
N0ne has some of the craziest edge cancels. His recovery with side b and up b always utilizes a crazy edge cancel and he has some really tricky hax dashes when he recovers as well.
1. n0ne, Zain, Westballz
2. Ganon (He has a lot of land lag on his moves so cancelling it spruces up his movement big time, and edgecancelling up b is crucial to survive edgeguards)
edgecancelling up b is only for really high ones or just lucky ones, it's really hard to actually do it in battle
I agree, it is difficult because of Ganon's mediocre drif., n0ne seems to be quite successful with it though
SBMM Tutorials,
Do you think you will cover v-canceling in a future video? or is it too impractical to cover?
Sean Kim what is v-canceling?
V-canceling is when you press l or r when you are in certain states. It mildly reduces your knockback. Not many top players use it, but if you wanna go more indepth, wizzrobe's stream covered for a little bit
Sean Kim ok it may have use by how it sounds though I'm not sure at the moment
+Nick Story If you're in the air not in hitstun, if you press L or R just as you're getting hit by a move, that move does 5% less knockback.
CDK,
Who is better at SSBM, you or Kira?

Out of the entire Melee cast who would you Kiss, Murder, or sleep with? lol
kiss pichu, kill nana, fuck peach (yellow color)
fuck zelda/sheik, marry peach, kill bowser
Kiss Marth ( ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ), Murder Kirby, and sleep with Zelda ( ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) OoT had a thiccer Zelda)
I'd fuck Bowser
Kiss Zelda, murder Jiggs and fuck DK
Kira if you had a deathnote who would you use it on?
I feel the quality of the tuts have gotten much better since Connor has been contributing to the channel more
Samus' up B edge cancel is essential imo.
Kira , Kellen or CDK

You didn't place him in your high* tier list video so I was wondering why and if you think he could be a high* tier someday.
D. Wgic
He didn't do Mid Tier...
Sorry I did mean high tier, lol i was thinking mid-tier because i remembered Dr. Mario on the list.

Kira, how does one practice tech-skill in the most effective manner?

I think marth gets the most out of edge canceling, he has huge hit boxes and being able to throw those hit boxes out in rapid succession is super good.
4:33 Hey Armada, you gotta see this.
His friction is low enough that it isn't a far cry to say that you could edge-cancel all of his aerials anyway.
zain is an edge canceling mad man, and pivot mad man
I think marth benefits the most. His main weakness is his ending lag. Using edge canceling can somewhat reduce this weakness.
Westballz with his flashy stuff and falco because double/triple dips are sick
Weston Dennis uses edge cancelling the best and Falco benefits from them the most.
I play Young link and doc. Will you make more videos about mid to low tier characters?
I main them too
Me too! Doc main but yink is too fun to not secondary
same but iv been playing doc less recently
HeroiQs Stott OMG I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY DOC AND YOUNG LINK MAIN
same tbh
I can't believe that people still use hard trigger presses to L Cancel
Is that considered abnormal? I hard press
I've been playing melee for over two years and I didn't know you could light press until this video
Jonny W Woah! Thanks so much for That! I always find myself not able to tech and now I know why!
Leffen suggests you should hard press
Its not that big of a deal. But having a trigger mod with only hard press makes it near impossible to consistently L cancel stuff like drill moves or on ice climbers shields.
why do you have pichu as your picture but haven't done a single video on him ?
Tristan's Rule utilizes edge cansells THE best.
Kira,
Can you explain momentum callencing and Also, Foxes Up B under Battlefields ledge and still grabbing Ledge? Crazy Stuff
Westballz is really the only top player who is consistent with those edge cancels. you could tell some players (not all) dont mean to edge cancel but react fairly well when they do but Wes noticeable double D-air comes out so fast you know its planned
wow, I never noticed that my natural tendency to l cancel lightly was so helpful
N0NE is the best edge canceler
jeapie
SA3Future Stretch before you play, don't hold your controller too tight, and practice
SA3Future Also take breaks
CDK,
On a scale from 1- wanting to kill Hugs, how mad are you at him that he doesnt even consider learning how to use chopsticks?
(personal answers appreciated)
I think falcon and puff benefit most from ledge canceling, wizzy is a great example of a falcon who uses ledge canceling to its fullest potential
S2J was nuts last Evo with his edge cancels
also
Kira, how many questions where there about you "already knowing"?
Kira, will you be finishing your tier list? So far I've considered it to be the most accurate one, imo, and I would love for you to finish it
5:10 it's called FASTGRAB when you grab the ledge and FASTPASS when you do an aerial
I think Axe uses edge cancles the most and the best
Kira or CDK whoever wishes to answer,
I was wondering if you could cover the different methods people use to execute various techniques.
Thanks!
He hasn't played in a while, but PPMD used to have insane edge cancels
As for who benefits the most from edge cancels, it's probably Falco.
Easy West and Hax use, or rather used, edge cancels the best and I believe that Fox and Falco can benefit the most from it
I think Hungrybox, PewPewU, and n0ne probably use them the best. Even when hungrybox isn't using jiggs, he is edge canceling tons of moves. PewPewU and n0ne also incorporate them into their gameplay all over the place.
Kira, Kellen, and CDK, who does the most work in SSBM Tutorials?
Kira, When Kira's Official Melee Tier List Part 3
For all my Mewtwo mains out there, edge cancel teleport is A1.
5:25 I use Z to l-cancel. Fetches me some dope accidental grabs every now and then lel
5:07 that's the bazoo drop i swear
i can't wait to edge in melee
Mewtwo on battlefield is great with edge cancel up b and edge cancels in general I also think yoshi is great with edge cancels but imma a little biased but when in my matches i always utilize edge cancelling but fox and falco are the best with edge cancels
"get good!" - CDK
to all:
who is your main and why?
aleksi koberg pichu because I have the most fun playing him
fox because I've been playing fox before I even got into the competitive scene and used him in every game
captain falcon, doc, luigi, samus and young link because im not that technical and i like to beat myself up
Falcon. I grew up watching the best falcons before laying my hands on a GameCube controller, and when I finally got my hands on one falcon just feels right. I love playing him, and I think you should play whoever you have the most fun with.
Samus because... idk, just my best character by a good margin
N0ne's ledge canceled dairs and side b are the best
can u make a video on approaching with Martha along with chain grabs ect. for Kira or whoever
Too many questions directed Kira here :P
