Thanks for the info. Just started my own stump grinding business over in Europe. Got a little 13hp Dosko. Tips I can add: keep the teeth sharp with these little grinders. Price compatitavely but don't undercharge because you have a small company with a small grinder. You and up having a bad day and probably the customer too if you cut corners. Also make sure the grinder has a decently large flywheel. This makes the small engine less likely to stall.

I started with a Husqvarna SG13 (13 HP) walk behind. It was a real workout. My next machine was a Rayco RG20 walk behind. Another real workout. My 3rd machine was a Vermeer SC252. Now I do the big stumps for the guys with the smaller machines. I agree that you need to make sure that your sub / referral is leaving a good impression with your customers (and not stabbing you in the back).
Late to the video, but I appreciate it. Just bought my first grinder--a 15 hp. Did four ash tree stumps I had cut because of the beetle killing them that lined my front property line on the street. Stones and boulders all up here in NW Jersey get in the way, but got it done and now looking to take the machine off my yard and onto other yards. Stoked and appreciate your video.
Me and my partner both have those little bluebird handlebar grinders it's where we started out, we got to the point where we could take out a 4-foot stump 6in down in about 45 minutes with both of them going, we've got bigger machines now but we still keep around those bluebirds cuz they are genuinely useful
What’s the max realistic stump dia for a handlebar grinder? I’m trying to start out on the weekend, and build up!
@@bryanutility9609 12" is Max ideal, pushing it would be 24"
@@calebbegley6850 what about depth? Can you get 6” easily every time?
@@bryanutility9609 most of the time, 4" is more common, basically the bottom of the grinder lays on the ground so in order to get deeper you have to widen up the hole.

Just ran across your channel and have been checking out your videos. Getting close to retirement and looking for a small business that I can do to stay active, gets me outside, doesn't involve climbing trees and isn't expensive to start. Stump grinding may be a good way to go. Only have used the little Blue Bird rentals. Already have most of the other equipment, other than the stump gringer. Your channel has a lot of very good information and has given me much to think about! Hope your hip recovery went well!

Thanks for the tips. I'm a handyman and have done occasional stump grinding with small rental unit. I've been considering investing in a Toro STX 26.
Another awesome video... thanks for the tips on getting and having a small machine. One thing you did mention was that you have ramps that you carry with you on the jobs you do... very helpful tip.

Glad to see you doing better. Glad you made a positive video about the handle bar units. I have a Rayco rg25 HD handle bar unit. In an average year I grind around $25k with that machine. My best year I did around $36k with my old rg20 handle bar unit. Last year I added one of those Alpine Magnum stump grinder to my arsenal of grinders so I can get too more tighter access stumps or up steep slopes.

@@mustangrebuilder In the Facebook group a lot of guys say that the handlebar units are useless and a joke and you're not a real stump grinder if you have one but I have ground a stump big enough in a backyard that no other stump grinder could get to the hole was so big I could bury a VW bug with mine.

I’ve always used dosko 20hp or rayco 25hp. Forearms like most guys legs. 20 years. Full time. Not fat. Not scared. I don’t do recommendations or contractors any more. Slave no more. Own house car boat west Oz.

Yes sir I'm also a retired firefighter from south Texas loc. 970 ., I'm going into the business getting some financing soon.Have a question if dont mind by the way love all your videos very helpful 👍.Is thier any way I can get or find a sample on a contract or recipe on how its formatted so I can cover my butt when doing business with customers. Hope your doing good on that rehab and healing up i know how it is I'm pretty beat up myself .Hang in thier and keep pushing thanks again and take care.
@@luish777 I don't do contracts but make it clear when doing a job that I am not responsible for items underground that I am not informed about like sprinkler lines or cable and customer calls locate .... also find a locator in your area and learn how the utilities are laid out in your area

Hey brother so I'm starting to look at stomp grinders because I want to start my own thing, so I'm in illinois just north of Chicago, but Im just starting out and think I can afford something a little bigger so I don't have to beat myself up as I would be doing it part time at first as I won't 'quit my day job' yet. Really like the videos, retired diesel mechanic. Have a lot of experience working on bandit industrial wood chipper and heavy equip. This seems like something I would like doing to supplement my income. Could the teeth on these machines be hard faced with stick welder like with the big chippers?
Not the teeth but we do hard face the cutter wheel the bolt on to

I need a video on how to deal with the dealers… buying heavy equipment at dealers in my area is extremely difficult and complicated. I am not looking to buy a grinder without dealer service connection and it seems complicated. Any help in this will be appreciated
On the 2550 bandit deisal. Do you prefer the rubber tires or tracks. I heard the tracks are not as rough on yards. Your thoughts? How much do one of these machines cost? Do you recommend buying used? I remember you saying you use 50 horse power. Mike
the older ones are 45 to 46 hp and I like tires not tracks on it ..the tires dont destroy yard on turns ..price new close to 50k and used I would buy but only if it was a non tier 4 engine ,,, the new one has a computer on it and complicated to work on
Hello, I just came across your video and liked what you're saying. I have a small landscaping business and thought about doing stump grinding also. I currently don't have a machine so I'd have to rent one. How much would I charge considering I have to rent and still be competitive with others that already have machines? I appreciate any advice you can give.

If you rent you will have to line up like a days worth of work to make it worth your while but it also depends on what your happy making a a day in your pocket

@@2Tree I see you on the derecho page on Facebook so wondering if might be the same person. Do yourselves a huge favor and get helmets and comm sets with that $3000. Huge on safety and communication in general and it'll help you make more money safer. It was huge upgrade for me. Save up and try to get a little bigger grinder if you can. More money faster. It's worth financing one as many stumps as are in your area.

@@robertbell8393 Heres the deal find a part time job, come spring work for a tree company as whats called a ground man then take that money and pay off car. Now !!! when thats paid off stack up about 5k for a 252 used Vermeer grinder.

What is a good small grinder to buy?
First figure out what kind of area will you be working , urban or lets say wide open and then I would also see what machines the rental companys in my area use .. I like something with at least 20hp
Bare minimum vermeer sc252 otherwise your killing yourself
I call one guy for flowerbeds , vegetation removal or raised areas we cant get in
