Hello, outstanding advice. I started my grinding business in 2001 and we’ve developed into a 2nd generation of stump grinding professionals. My 2 sons have been working w/me since they were 8-9yrs old. You’re suggestions are solid, solid advice. I’m bout 2 years behind you & when I hit 60, I’ve already been planning on a lift in my garage as well. Slowing down as well but will work smarter not harder. Keep up the video’s brother, great to see someone being honest for a change

Thank you for sharing knowledge and tips. I started out doing tree work as an independent contractor in 2017 after being a chef for many many years. Did that for 2 years liked the grinding part of it the most. I went back into cooking in 2019 hoping it would be more than it was. I still had my llc for tree work so in January of this year I quit the cooking and bought a vermeer sc130 networking with the former tree guy doing stumps and helping with tree work. No extra money its been slow going but confident it will be successful. I appreciate your tips

Started in tree work and still have a corporate job, started with a dump truck and bucket truck old and cheap but it worked. Grew it from there. Now I have more equipment and a self propelled zt1844 because my local dealer got one in as a trade in, and their support/parts have always been good to me. Liking the power it has in a small grinder and I was aware of the issues going in, but starting somewhere with the grinder and my goal is to step up in the next couple of years but keep that for right access.

You're the best!!...I've always been interested in this work as a retiree from the electrical industry. I have a small Toro 7hp that I bought 10 years to do our property and just recently did 7 stumps for my fiance's daughter. When she told me what a contractor quoted her, I almost choked...I got to get into this. Love working outside. Thanks for all the tips!!

Really good ideas, thanks for the info! I got the 252 I bought in Claremore tuned up, bought my insurance, and have done 4 stumps so far. It cuts better than I thought it would. I appreciate all your videos!

Thank you so much for your time! I’m a machinist and fabricator by trade. I bought a SC672 powered by a 65 horse Wisconsin that I’m rebuilding. I have plans for a 252 as you suggested to get into back yards and do smaller stumps. It will be paid for before I start. I’m enjoying restoring the 672, it’s a beast!

Hi mustang rebuilder, I’ve been watching your videos over the last couple of weeks the reason being I’ve just ordered a SG40 i know it’s a upgrade from the ZT1844 i have never had a tracked machine before so I was looking for some reviews and because I live in the UK you just don’t see any bandit stump grinders anyway just wanted to say I think you talk a lot of sense and I’m very grateful that you’ve made these videos.I’ve been stump grinding for the past 15 years and never looked back but like you say you learn something new every day.please keep up the videos.

I bought a sgr13 stump grinder from home depot. It was all beat up and under serviced. I did what I could to bring it to better shape. It has given me some good cash.
That was a awesome video. Actually inspired me. I’m opening up a tree stump removal business on weekends and starting from scratch. Just an idea. Thank you brother

Just found you. I also am a retired firefighter ( 30 years - 20 on the truck and 10 as chief). I also was in the grass business on the side and bought a small bucket truck to go with my lawn care. With that I started doing tree work - amazing how much we have in common. I also found that I wasn’t doing the stumps and giving that business away. I recently bought an older Vermeer 630B. It’s in good shape and I would like to eventually change over to more grinding than tree work. I did already have a bluebird stump grinder ( 13 horsepower Honda engine) that runs great but to small to really do a lot. I’m 56 and thinking stump grinding will be less physical work than tree trimming. Any advice. Thanks and I enjoy your videos.

Thanks for sharing this I just start my grinding business about 2 months ago I got a Vermeer 630a best part paid cash. Keep videos like this coming love the info. What is your best return on advertising? Word of mouth? Door hangers, yard signs. Any info would be awesome for a noob.

Adam, you are incredibly kind to provide all of this information. I am a midwesterner (Ohio) and I was wondering how many months of the year you can stump grind? I'm assuming once the weather gets nasty (i.e. snow) the season is over. What do you do during those months?
I service my machines during winter but you would be amazed that I still grind most of the winter due to construction and concrete companies calling me

I have an mahrinda tractor now but its a smaller one... I plan on selling it and getting two more tractors.. one new mahindra 2670 and a used 5000 series...
I won't go into details but where i am located there was a huge fire and tons of work.... like trip over yourself...
I was also in the fire and ended up getting decent payout and have to do something for taxes and dumping it into tractors is safe...
I been looking to do a skid steer ... stumpx style... it will work the best with trees out here... but I am also going to do trenching, log moving, etc... stuff the big guys don't want and stuff I can sit on my tractor for...
Thanks again for the videos and advice. I am about 2 years from retirement and if I do well at this part time, I might actually retire. My job has been good to me for the past 28 years but it's mostly inside work and enjoy being outside and working with my hands.

Question is, regarding equipment/Vermeer 252 - are used equip priced somewhat uniform across the country? Any re-sellers that you could recommend? Or just search for machine + make judgement call myself on condition? Thanks again.
Prices seem to be uniform across the USA but winter is best time to buy due to it being slow time
What do you do about city licenses? I mean tulsa area includes Catoosa, broken arrow, sand springs, Jenks, tulsa, Sapulpa, etc. Do you license in each city or is code enforcement pretty relaxed down there?

I own a 2.5 ton Yanmar excavator and am going to put a FSI H20 grinder on it
Do you have any comments on this type of unit
I appreciate it won't be as fast as a conventional unit , But I already have the excavator and have a few tree contractors complaining that their machines can't reach some stumps on slopes
I have seen one used along fence lines on a highway before
I just had 7 trees removed and the stumps were removed from another guy. I was blown away with the stump grinding part. He used a brand new Rayco RG80. That thing was awesome. Remote control and 4x4. I currently work nights for a school district and we have a food trailer at a local Home Depot that my wife runs. The guy did our stumps for $500 and was gone in less than an hour. I'm interested in starting a grinding service. I'm in northwest Georgia. How do you price out your jobs?
I price by diameter of inch or day rake at 300hr
