I’ve developed rosacea in my mid 40’s. I have been using the Prequel Lucent C for about 5 months now and it’s been great! I appreciate the quality of your brand and affordability! 😊
I love love your Lucent-C Serum. I have used many L-ascorbic acid serums over the years, but now yours is my favorite! It applies easily and absorbs well, and has an amazing price point. The only minor issue I have with it is when the contents get low, it is hard to pump out the serum without making a mess all over the pump head. I do appreciate the packaging in general, though. And for all its positives, I will keep repurchasing.
Can confirm that the Prequel Lucent C is fairly gentle for a 15% LAA product 🙌🏻 I also love using on my body under sunscreen if I’m going to be out in the sun
just tried your Prequel lucent c serum and it's now my go to vitamin c serum. Its so gentle, yet has all those effective ingredients. I don't know how you did it! And I love how affordable it is. ❤
Once I entered menopause, my L Ascorbic acid no longer worked. I love DRMTLGY's C5x lotion, it has five types of vitamin C, including THD Ascorbate, absorbs well, and is reasonably priced. I love it and have used it for years.
Thanks for the info! I've used Prequel and Vanicream and agree both are great inexpensive options. I have sensitive skin and had no issues with either of these. Side question - what's on your lips??
I’ve tried a lot of LAA serums and reacted to them all. The Budget Derm also recommends THD ascorbate for sensitive skin types so I’ve started using it with no reactivity. So far I’ve used The Ordinary and Vanicream. I don’t love the texture of The Ordinary’s and it’s a bit too oily to wear under makeup, but it’s something like 20% THD compared to vanicream’s 5%. So I used Vanicream on days I wear makeup and The Ordinary on days I don’t! Both are really affordable. Hope this helps someone.
I didn’t have a problem with L-ascorbic acid until I did. I somehow became sensitized to a popular vitamin C and some products including fragrance all of a sudden. Thank you for offering solutions for us sensitive types who want to take advantage of vitamin C!
I tried the Naturium Vitamin C Complex and liked it. I emailed the company to find out the percent of Vitamin C in the product. Tneir response was that the percentage of ingredients in tneir products is proprietary. Is it important to know the percent of Vitamin C in a Vitamin C product? I finished the Naturium and ordered your Prequel. I'm using it now and like it, too.
My super sensitive skin has never been able to tolerate retinol or vitamin C. That arm test doesn't work for me because my arms aren't as sensitive as my face. I've had wonderful results with Prequel so I may try this one.
I really like Timeless 20% vitamin C but I don't have sensitive skin. They do have a 10% vitamin C also. I still learned from this video. I have melasma on my upper lip so I use vitamin C twice a day. I'll see if this can help with it. I also am using hydroquinone. Thanks for the video!
I used the Naturium and i really liked it but i couldn't order it anymore so i had to find something else,so now i am using the Medik8 THD serum,i really really like it.
Even the Vitamin C serums that are made for sensitive skin still have people reporting irritation. Since my skin is very sensitive, I looked for Vitamin C alternatives, and someone recommended these: *1.* Ubiquinone (CoQ10) *2.* Pycnogenol *3.* Alpha Arbutin When combined together, they might offer the different benefits that Vitamin C offers. I’d really love to find a Vitamin C serum (or an alternative to it) that is made for super sensitive & reactive skin. It seems like I can’t find anything that is made for very sensitive skin like mine. Also, a lot of skincare products have hyaluronic acid added to them, which is very irritating to my skin, since it severely dries out my skin. I need something with very gentle ingredients that is made for truly sensitive skin, and doesn’t contain unnecessary/problematic ingredients like hyaluronic acid.
I’ve been using Timeless 10% c serum for 6 months now. I just purchased the 20% so I hope I am ok with it. After vit c I apply Paula’s choice ultra light antioxidants which has THD in it. I wanted Resveratrol in a product so I use that daily after my cut c serum.
Super sensitive, but weird skin over here (ok with glycolic, but not lactic acid for example…) and the best option I found so far is the Rohto CC Melano. It’s inexpensive and as a bonus it smells like yuzu, not that hot dog water 🤮
I'm trying Mad hippie vit C which has the derivative sodium ascorbic phosphate. So far so good, it's super smooth on the skin and no irritation. I've picked that derivative cause I've read it might be also beneficial for helping with blemishes.
Huge fan of Alto Advanced Defense and Repair Serum. I responded terribly to Skinceuticals CE Ferulic and was so bummed out at that price point. However, was recommended Skin Better Science Alto Advanced and my skin had zero issues with it and has improved over a couple of months.
Hi Dr. Ellis, thanks for all the great info. Have you ever used and reviewed the "Timeless" products? If not, I'd love to get your opinion. I've been using their skincare for years, and when bought from their site when they're running sales (often in association with major holidays) their prices per ounce just can't be beat!
Hi Dr. Ellis, question about Vitamin C. I heard on a science podcast that L-ascorbic acid is basically useless because it’s water soluble and therefore can’t absorb into your skin - that you would need to use a lipid soluble Vitamin C in order for it to actually absorb into the skin. This sounds like a logical argument, but also completely contradicts what I normally hear from dermatologists praising L-ascorbic acid. Any chance you could provide clarification on this issue?
In the meantime, I might check out Dr. Idriss' videos on vit c (she has several) discussing the different vit c derivatives and how they are supposed to work (oil soluble, water soluble, etc).
@@db-gb5xi Thanks for the rec! Just watched the video and it had some great info. I guess I’m still confused though as to why anyone would use L-ascorbic acid over a lipid-soluble option like THD ascorbate. Unless I misunderstood, in her video it sounded like she said THD ascorbate (which is what I use) absorbs into the skin better than L-ascorbic acid and then is converted into L-ascorbic acid once it’s absorbed. So it sounds like THD ascorbate gives the same benefits as L-ascorbic acid but uses a better vehicle to do so. Add to that the fact that THD ascorbate is more stable and gentler than L-ascorbic acid, I guess I’m still not understanding why L-ascorbic acid would be the go-to Vitamin C option for anyone. There could be factors at play that I’m missing, but for now I’m still confused.
Luckily clinical studies have been performed on human skin with l-ascorbic acid and it does get into tissue! There are so many things that determine skin penetration besides lipid vs water solubility. 😊
i would love to see a video deep dive on ethylated ascorbic acid, specifically. i think it's the most promising out of all vitamin c derivatives, but i don't think it's talked about enough! i would also love a 15 % or 20 % 3OEA serum from Prequel, that would be amazing.
I’ve used the Prequel vitamin C for some days now and haven’t reacted!! The Skinceuticals VitC Ferulic made my skin react terribly… the naturium I also like, but it makes my makeup break down off throughout the day.

That’s where the Vanicream came into my life and I really like it! I use their facial moisturizer and facial moisturizer with SPF too and they are all so good! I’m one of the few who doesn’t like the cleanser I guess. Strange texture and it’s drying. I love your Prequel Gleanser though! My absolute favorite ever.

Thank you for all the recommendations. My big question is do any of these vitamin C’s have the hot dog smell. I purchased timeless, vitamin C, and I’m very sensitive to smells, and I could not stand to use it on my face because of the smell. In Dr. Dray’s review of Naturium products, she said that gold has no benefits in skincare and I’ve been avoiding it ever since. Now I don’t know who to listen to 😕
On some ingredient libraries (incidecoder, paula's choice, cosdna) there are two types of gold. If it's listed as just gold, it will just be described as a colorant and/or possible irritant. Colloidal gold can be described as a preservative, solvent, or antimicrobial.
Because it doesn’t, on the naturium products it’s used as an stabilizer, is not affecting the skin, it’s just prolonging the life of the product, so they both said the truth, hope this helps🤍
It doesnt. She just said it helps stabilise the product. Similiar to how something like a paraben helps keep products stabilised and going bad from mold.
Dr. Ellis, have you tested the Timeless Vitamin C? If so, is like to hear your thoughts on that product. I have sensitive skin, and I’ve been using this brand (20% L ascorbic for my face/ 10% for my neck) for almost 3 years. I seem to be developing a sensitivity to it, so this video is pretty timely for me!
Naturium does ship to Canada but does charge shipping. I paid $12 US on a $78 order but I really liked the products I tried, the vitamin C serum and the retinaldehyde and thought the price was reasonable for the quality.
This video is so helpful! My skin HATES vitamin C, last year I tried to introduce it in my skincare and it broke me out so badly. But I'd love to be able to add it to my routine. I was looking into the Beauty of Joseon Vit. C + centella serum (which I think contains a derivative), has anyone tried it?

Do you have recommendations for vitamin C alternatives? I tried vanicream vitamin C and my skin did not like it. Usually love your recommendations for sensitive skin though!
Same here… no matter what I try, my skin just does not like vit C in any form. I’ve also found Dr. Ellis to be extremely helpful with ultra sensitive skin and rosacea recommendations!
Someone recommended these ingredients as topical Vitamin C alternatives: *1.* Ubiquinone (CoQ10) *2.* Pycnogenol *3.* Alpha Arbutin You might have to combine them together to get the different benefits of Vitamin C though.
Wonderful, thank you very much Dr. Ellis. More and more people have sensitive skin due to lifestyle, allergies or environmental pollution. And it's nice to offer them an option for antiaging products as well. I have heard so many good things about your own product line Prequel. I would like to try several products, but I live in Europe. Is there a way to buy the products?
Dr Sam, if you say your product contains L Ascorbic acid and the final PH of your product is 3.2 which is acidic, how then are you formulating it with niacinamide which has a PH of 7. It’s not adding up. This is not an effective formula you have there. If you are in doubt, Google it.
Thank you for all the recommendations. My big question is do any of these vitamin C’s have the hot dog smell. I purchased timeless, vitamin C, and I’m very sensitive to smells, and I could not stand to use it on my face because of the smell. I’d love to buy Prequel! But I am from Canada 😊! Hopefully one day it can ship here ❤
You did not mention Timeless vitamin C serum…
With ferulic acid and vitamin E.
This is a very good product
I think that's a different form of vitamin C that may irritate sensitive skin. So it's a good product but maybe not for sensitive skin.
I just started using this one. Praying it helps!🙏🏻

*1.* Ubiquinone (CoQ10)
*2.* Pycnogenol
*3.* Alpha Arbutin
You might have to combine them together to get the different benefits of Vitamin C though.
Can I use vitamin C with Snail Musin?
Yes! 🙂

So the Vitamin C Goes First rule supercedes the Thinnest To Thickest rule?
Sunday Riley CEO vitamin C serum!
Dr Sam, if you say your product contains L Ascorbic acid and the final PH of your product is 3.2 which is acidic, how then are you formulating it with niacinamide which has a PH of 7. It’s not adding up. This is not an effective formula you have there. If you are in doubt, Google it.
12 minute video to recommend like 5 products - smh
Thank you for all the recommendations. My big question is do any of these vitamin C’s have the hot dog smell. I purchased timeless, vitamin C, and I’m very sensitive to smells, and I could not stand to use it on my face because of the smell. So basically, I wasted my money, I haven’t purchased another one since because I don’t know what they smell like. Any suggestions would be welcome.
Anything with THD (instead of l-ascorbic) won’t have that smell!
